Best Winery on the Central Coast. I've visited most of the wineries on the Central Coast (a difficult task to keep up with given the exponential growth of the region!), and my favorite winery has remained Fratelli Perata. FP specializes in Italian-style reds (they used to have a little chardonnay, but they ripped those out a few years ago...). All of their wines are consistently good from year to year, but my particular favorites are the Bel'Bruzzo, the Cabernet Riserva, and, of course, the Zinfandel. Bel'Bruzzo is the name of their newest product, from the Montepulciano d'Abruzzo varietal. FP is, to my knowledge, the only Central Coast winery to try this grape, and the result is fantastic, especially given the relatively low price tag. The Cabernet is consistently excellent; a hearty, in-your-face cabernet (the style I particularly favor). Usually of very high quality, it is some years reserved for wine club members. Finally, the Zinfandel, which is probably what FP is most known for. The zin is a peppery, earthy style. The last vintage was something of an outlier, with a very sweet flavor. Also, very good, but not necessarily representative of their zins as a whole. Carol, the wife of one of the Perata brothers (thus the name, Fratelli Perata) runs the tasting room. She's very friendly, knowledgeable and always ready to dispense with food pairing advice that never misses. I see one review that lists the tasting room as by appointment only. To my knowledge, FP is always open on weekends, especially during the peak season (April-October), but by all means, give them a call! read more

As a disclaimer, I'd like to say that there are a few things I look for in a winery. First and foremost is the wine, particularly if the quality is worth the price. Second is the customer service, as this will affect my experience at the winery. Third is the atmosphere, which the winemaker and tasting room pourers often have the least control over. First, the wines. As a secondary disclaimer I should tell you all that I am a student at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo and I am minoring in wine and viticulture. With that in mind, I am only 22 and thus my palate isn't fully developed and most of my experience with wine is more theoretical than practical. When my last visited I wanted to take them wine tasting so I looked all over Yelp for somewhere to take them. I chose here and Ecluse (which you can read on my other reviews). My family and my older siblings are all in wine clubs, which led to my minor, and I wanted to impress them. This is a VERY small, family owned winery that specializes in Italian varietals. They had a $5 tasting fee that was waived with bottle purchase. Most of their wines were unfamiliar to me accept from Italian restaurants, but I found their Petit Verdot and their Montepulciano D'abruzzo to be fabulous. Granted this opinion is based off of both their approach to the varietal as well as my very limited exposure to the varietal itself, both were very enjoyable. Each was priced about $30 per bottle, which is pretty common for the area. Second is the customer service. This is what sold me on this winery. We first visited tasting room and it was packed (which means it had 8 people in it) so we moved on. On our way back, we stopped by only to find they were closed! They close early, at around 4:30. The pourer recognized us from earlier and let us in. Turned out she was the owner's wife, which made for a much more personal experience with the winery! Like I said earlier it is a family run winery, and the eldest daughter went to UC Davis to study Viticulture so they have a strong future ahead of them. The owner's wife was kind of awkward but very inviting and friendly which made the experience for us. Third is the atmosphere. This winery feels like it is in the middle of nowhere! It has glorious views of rolling hills of vineyards and is basically just a house on a ranch. That being said, the tasting room is very small, with a short bar and a few barrels. The largest wall in the room has a beautiful mural that was painted by friend of the owner and depicts the whole family in their native town in Italy. Very pretty. Overall it was a tremendous experience and one my most memorable wine tasting experiences! I'll definitely be back. read more

My latest find in Paso Robles. A small family owned Italian winery. They had me after tasting their Charbono but loved their Barbara ,Sagiovese and their blends were excellence.. This is a small, family run winery that makes mostly Italian varietal red wines. High quality, good value, big wines not for the faint of heart. If you like your wines on the bolder side....think wines with pastas and red sauces or meats....this is your place. Being small, they will run out of some wines over the course of a year, but if they have the Zinfandel or Cabernet Sauvignon be sure to taste them. Probably the best in the area. read more

If you love wine (especially reds) and hate the snobbery of the Napa Valley scene - head south my friends! There are so many wonderful wineries in the Paso Robles area and Fratelli Perata is a real gem among them. Wonderful family owned and run winery, we stumbled in purely by accident on an open winery weekend in the area and were immediately hooked. Carol was pouring and was SO friendly, she happily answered all of our questions (even the silly ones). The wines we tasted that day were all really good. A couple months later we were compelled (after finally opening a bottle we bought that day) to join their wine club and have not been disappointed with the selections yet (the only bummer has been that since they don't produce large lots we sometimes can't get the repeat bottles of the ones we really enjoy - wahhh!). I really love that most of their wines have a story behind them, too. Also, since we tend to drag our kids to wineries against their will (bad, bad parents), even though they were not with us that day we were impressed to see a basket of toys off in the corner to keep bored little people occupied. Looks like an invitation to come back to me :-) Pay them a visit, you won't be sorry. read more

Try 2005 Tre Sorrelle! We followed a big truck off the bumpy dirt road, almost missed the entrance. This was a small winery with a lot of charm. We came here just for the tasting since price was on the higher end of our budget. In the end, each of us brought a bottle. The people that work at the winery are extremely knowledgeable. We ended up having a 20 minute conversation about different types of corks, the benefits of synthetic v. screw top v. real cork etc. I also think their Zin was my favorite wine of the day. 2011: I have to second Angela B's thoughts: "Ho-ly chit". We dropped by during fall Harvest Fest. Out of the 24 wineries we hit during 4 days, FP had the best stuff. Seriously. There were 6 in our group (3 couples) and all 6 of us liked all of the presented wines. That didn't happen at any other place. We each bought 2 bottles on the spot and all 3 couples signed up for the wine club. I got my shipment in Nov and there are only 3 bottles left (Xmas). I really, really tried to keep them in the fridge longer..... Psst: the 08 Petit Sirah is amazing! I just wanted to smell it all night, contemplating that if I actually drank it, there'd be none left in an hour. 2013: Still a member and still loving FP. Went back this fall and were welcomed like family. Wine line-up remains awesome, though my "favorites" have shifted a little. The '09 PS just can't match the '08. BUT, the 08 Sangiovese is just about as good as the PS. I hope I can snag a couple more of the Sangio before it's all gone. read more

Small family owned winery with great wines. We went thru our flight with a daughter-in-law who pointed out the family origins on a map of Italy. A fantastic reserve Cabernet (I know, not Italian unless blended into a Super Tuscan, which they offer) and a unique Charbono, which I did not try but am dying to. Go for the Sangiovese. Traditional Italian, and they know how to make this wine! No grand tasting room, but good hospitality and great food wines...what Paso Robles is known for. read more

Small lot winery off of a dirt path in Paso Robles - that is the treasure that is Fratelli Perata. My husband and I happened upon FP when we were taking a quick stroll through Paso Robles on the way to L.A. for our anniversary. Some would say (well everyone would say actually) that we are total wine snobs. We are never attracted to the wineries with mass production and all the 'glitz and glamour' of the commerical world. If you're a true wine lover, you know the best wine is found in hidden gems where the owner is the one pouring for you. We found just that in FP where the owner, Carol, was pouring her delicious wines for us with great pride, but without the oversized ego (or any ego at all for that matter). Just a happy woman who loves her job and has a passion for the wines she produces. We then met her daughter who shared the passion too and enjoyed chatting with the patrons of the tasting room about their harvests, bottling, etc. Every wine, from the first to the last, was absolutely shockingly delicious! You don't think you like Zin? - try FP! You don't think you like Merlot? - try FP! Don't think you like red wine in general? - try FP!! Every single wine there will blow your socks off, and surprise you in the most amazing way! We walked away with 4 bottles, and would have joined the wine club but we're in the middle of moving to Hawaii. We plan to make future trips to FP to stock up. We first tried them because they do Italian varietals and we've been wine club members for many years due to the quality and value of their wines and the recipes we receive are excellent! The daughter, Kathy, graduated from UC Davis wine program and we were lucky enough to chat with her recently. She produced her first wine--an excellent Rose. Can't wait to see her future impact on the winery. We never miss a visit to this winery when in Paso Robles. I recently went to this winery because our Wine Tour Guide recommended it. We loved it. We met Carole, the owner, and she was hilarious! She had a very dry wit (which I love), and explained her family history (which was on a mural in the tasting room), and went over which wine would taste well with which food, etc. We ended up becoming wine members, and would definitely go back there. My girlfriend and I left our husbands home and took a little trip to Paso Robles, a two hour drive from our homes on the Monterey Peninsula. We both enjoy bold red wines, but must admit that we came across this winery by accident. Wow, what great luck! We spent about an hour with Carol, tasting our way through everything she had open. We live in an area where wines are made and have done numerous tastings over the years. Both of us have had the same types of experiences -- the wineries where you are "talked down to" if you are not a true expert; the wineries where one wine or even a few is good, and the others are "eau de cat piss"; and, on rare occasion, a winery where EVERY wine makes you drool! Fratelli Perata falls CLEARLY into the third category! We had an incredible experience in every respect. First, the winery is located across from the vinter's family residence. You truly feel as if you are going to someone's home. The tasting room is small and intimate. Unlike many of the newer tasting rooms, it is not overrun with labeled merchandise -- t-shirts, coasters, etc. The tasting room, like Carol, is wonderfully unpretentious and comfortable, dedicated solely to making your experience pleasant. We did not know much about red wines, other than Chiantis or the homemade wine my grandfather used to make. Therefore, we were uncertain what to expect. We merely told Carol that we enjoyed big bold reds such as a full bodied Cabernet Sauvignon or a Petite Syrah. All their wines met our criteria. I ended up buying three bottles of wine, one of which -- the Tre Sorelle -- my husband has already had the pleasure of trying. He is planning our next trip to Paso Robles so that he, too, may visit the winery in person. We visited eight or nine wineries on our trip and Fratelli Pereta ranked number 1 in my opinion.
