I only started coming here after COVID-19 because now the waiting line is manageable. This place is very specific about the directions for entering the premise, which is good mostly. The wait was not too long (~20 min) on Saturday around 9:30 am, 8/29/20.
The food - I have ordered a ham and egg croissant, almond croissant, and morning bun, to take to a hike. I found out later, while on trail, that the host in fact gave me a ham and CHEESE croissant instead, so I was not a happy camper (or rather, not a happy hiker)! The ham and cheese croissant was not bad, but nothing to write home about. Almond croissant was great, as I have had before. It has just the right amount of frangipane (almond paste/cream) and powder sugar without making it cloyingly sweet and keeping the croissant flaky. And unlike other French bakeries I go to in SF, it was not over-baked. This was my first time trying its morning bun, and it was also quite good. I ended up having it 3 days after the purchase, but it was still soft and again, not overly sweet.
The service - if you read the mistake the host made in the earlier section, you can probably guess this part does not turn out well. Well, it's worse actually. Since the primary reason for going here and withstanding the wait in line was for ham and egg croissant, my friend suggested that we go back to see if I can get some after the hike. OK, so we went back, but I wasn't going to stay in line again only to find that they sold out the croissants, so I was aiming to ask now another host who was taking orders of the availability first. Given COVID, I asked the patrons in line to see if they were OK if I just (essentially cut in and) ask the host a short question. They were gracious in allowing me. I also waited until the patrons inside finished ordering and paying and moved aside. I was at the door asking if ham and egg croissants were still available. The host, instead of answering my question, reprimanded for coming into the store because there were two patrons inside already (despite the fact that they were together and moved to the other side of the store). She refused to answer my question until the two patrons left the premise. (Keep in mind everyone was wearing masks, including me, and it probably was more "dangerous" with me hanging out just outside of the store + 2 patrons inside breathing in/out air for a few minutes than be done with me by simply answering the question and for me to leave the area within seconds, but hey, following strict rules are more important, right?)
The rudeness did not end there. She finally told me that there were still some ham and egg croissants left, so I went back to the end of the line to wait. When finally my turn came, I stated that the another host in the morning had made a mistake and gave me ham and cheese croissant instead of ham and egg one. She asked me to show her the receipt. When she verified that I was charged for ham and cheese croissant, she looked at me incredulously, as if I am making this up. I am sorry, but we are not that bored that we want to subject ourselves to waiting in line twice in one day just for fun. Also, just because the host charged correctly for the item she gave to the patron does not imply she fulfilled the correct order. If she did not hear my order clearly, she should have asked to repeat, instead of assuming. Yet, no apology ever came during the whole interaction, not even a courtesy "sorry," or "we apologize for the inconvenience of coming back to get the item you actually wanted." My friend, who ordered before me even told the host that I was a loyal customer, but no response. I instead told her that I am not quite sure whether I'd be so loyal any more, and it is true. There are many great pastry shops in the Bay Area, who are all suffering right now during the COVID-19 situation. Without customer trust, where will they be?
So I bought two ham and egg croissants, made certain they were the right items before I left. They were good, but I didn't know whether it was worth all the hassle that came with them. read more
