Delicious!!!!!! This is my friend's favorite bakery in Berkeley and I came here to get her a box of pastries for her birthday. I arrived around 7:30 and it was empty, but as I was deciding what to get there was a line out the door. Everything looks delicious it was so hard to choose. For myself I got the egg and ham croissant which was so unique and absolutely delicious. A perfect savory treat. I also had a bite of their strawberry-rhubarb breton which was also delicious, kinda like a shortbread cookie with cream and strawberry. Their food is generally pretty good: ranging from average (certain seasonal desserts, their ham and cheese croissants, scones) to excellent (toffee cake, almond croissants, certain beads). They are on the pricey side but that's expected in the Bay Area. The reason for the two stars: of the last three times I've been there, they have gotten my order wrong TWICE. Once in a while is totally an acceptable accident but two thirds wrong is really poor service. The workers are nice but not exactly approachably friendly. They take the order in front of the register, receive payment, and then step over to the counter to collect the items. The issue is when you (I) order a lot of stuff, they get collected behind the counter and placed into a large shopping bag so you can't see what you are getting (or not getting). They walk around behind the counter grabbing stuff and those that have paid stand in a small corner away from the purchasing line so it's difficult to see what they do (or don't) pick up. The first time I came home to find my order of half loaf (they sell the large ones by halves, if you want) missing. I brushed it off as an accident. I don't live close enough to go back before they close and I wouldn't have proof anyways. This last time I went, they didn't put in a pastry! At this point, I'm down about $16 and beginning to wonder if it's deliberate. *sigh* So now I have to decide whether I boycott them altogether or only buy one or two items so I can see what I am getting or be the weirdo that takes out every item in a large shopping bag to double check their work. *sigh again* read more

liked the pain au chocolat though i wouldn't go out of my way for it from sf. there was a line out the door on a sunday morning, waited about 10 minutes to get to the front and place my order, they grab your items and hand it to you from across the counter. just a bench inside (no one really sits on it), and a couple other benches outside. read more

We came here at 2pm and it was graduation week - big mistake :) they open at 7am. There were 4 chocolate croissants left over and few breads. Their quality of food is amazing. This is a small bakery in a quaint neighborhood known for its French pastries. A family favorite and v European. They offer bread, quiche, sandwiches on baguette and pastries. I believe there's also the option to order full pies or cakes. Everything is amazing but very sweet. The sandwiches are very simple. Friendly quick service. Absolutely no animals here. I was in town visiting family and was told about this place. You need to get there early, I mean before they open early. We got there 15 minutes before they opened and there were 10 people ahead of us already. As soon as you get close to the place you can smell the euphoric smell of bread and pastries. We tried few things here, the vegetable quiche, chocolate croissant, plain croissant, almond chocolate croissant, olive bread and they were all fantastic. My favorite thing that I had and I could eat everyday for the rest of my life is the canelé. Absolutely magnificent!! Just so so so good. I've had them in France and this one was still better. Dang !!!! Another 5 stars because no one (beside La Châtaigne in Lafayette) does croissants as they ought to be. I would genuinely advise you to use the amazing pre-paid order they have by simply calling the store. If they don't pick up - as they are kind of super busy- leave your number and you get a call back. It secures that what you want will be bagged and ready for you to grab, you can even walk straight in and wait near the refrigerated counters where they will simply ask for your name. I loved everything I ordered here. The croissant dough is so good and flaky. Regardless of savory or sweet or just plain, they always maintain the texture (no exceeded oil or sugar that ruins the structure). There's a good balance of bready, buttery, and flaky. Unfortunately, there are not many seats inside or outside. But that's probably why they are able to keep the price reasonable. And you'll be glad to take them to go because the savory ones tastes better once you reheat them in the oven. I will make a trip just for Fournee. read more

Was in the area and decided to stop by. Street parking is available, but tricky during its busiest hours, but we managed to find a spot a few blocks away. What I tried: coriander walnut scone (3/5) -- the texture of the dough alone was very spongy, but the walnut and coriander went well together fruit scone (3/5) -- wish the distribution of fruit was better in this. The scone was quite dry, cake-like, and tasted of nothing. The turbinado sugar is the only thing that helped it almond croissant (5/5) -- sweet, nutty, crispy pain au chocolat (5/5) -- beautiful flaky layers and very good quality dark chocolate I'd be willing to try out more of their items if I'm in the area again. read more

Excellent, excellent. Great variety of pastries, desserts, and bread, and you can't go wrong with anything. Expect a line on weekend mornings but the wait is well worth it. Duck fat fougasse - this is special. So flavorful, olive bits are chopped small which I appreciate. The texture of the bread is great with a lot of chew. Pain au chocolat - classic, delicious, double bar of chocolate Traditional croissant - a classic also done well Paris Brest - this was phenomenal. Crisp exterior, cream is rich and luxurious, and the hazelnuts and chocolate pieces put it over the top. Not sure how they got the chocolate pieces to be soft even when chilled, but it's magical. Gougere - the only thing I wouldn't get again, just due to personal preference. It's huge and has good flavor, but I would have probably enjoyed this more warmed up. read more

Wonderful baked goods , using local organic farm suppliers. Yes, costs more than a commercial bakery but it is so much better and so worth every penny! As is the custom in Berkeley, you stand outside in a line for a reasonably short wait till it is your turn to enter and place your order at the counter; your baker will package your purchases, most of which are displayed in refrigerated cases and bakery racks behind the counter until they are sold out. Yes, some things will sell out! Coffee is also available. You take your purchases home. Order a day (two days for a whole quiche etc) in advance by phone for fastest service and to be sure you get everything yummy and elegant that you desire! Street parking is at a premium, and requires quarters or credit cards. So plan ahead, come early, meet other nice people in the line, bring your portable seated walker if you cannot stand in line, and prepare to enjoy the finest baked goods you could possibly want! Love this cozy cute warm bakery. I bought 10 caneles and I'm so glad that I did! It's crispy on the outside, soft on the inside. The Paris Breast is another item that you must try. It looks sweet, but it's not. The cream is smooth and light. The crust is perfect contrast to the cream. The lemon shortbread is not what I used to have. We believe there's corn bread grains in it, and not much lemon flavor. Very unique. With all the sweet goodies, of course I had to buy some savory treats. I wish I bought more of the egg & ham, it's a meal by itself. Whole egg that was wrapped with a slice of ham, backed in a croiffin shell, it'll definitely give you enough energy to start the day. The wait is definitely on the longer side, but it moves steadily. We ordered a few things, but the classic is a basic croissant nice and flaky and buttery. Great service and amazing pastries. I ordered the Brook cherries scone, berry croissant, and Paris Brest. They were very different and subtly complex in their flavors. The Paris-Brest was a perfect pate-a-choux piped and filled with pastry cream. Nuts, liqueur and chunks of chocolate made the flavors pop. The croissant had berries and marscapone. I was staying at the nearby Claremont Hotel and suddenly had the craving for some pastries. I had no idea Founee was just literally at the bottom of the hill, so I had to take a nice stroll to the bakery. I waited in line for about 20-25 mins which wasn't too bad. I came around 11:30am last Saturday in which most of the popular pastries were already taken. Luckily, I was able to order their chocolate almond croissant, chocolate chip oatmeal cookie, hazelnut with Italian chocolate cookie, and a Fougasse bread. Our pastries were hot & fresh with the perfect amount of sweetness to them. My personal favorite was their Noisette & Oat Cookie which had freshly crisp hazelnuts and Gianduja chocolate. I can eat this cookie once a day. I also was a fan of their Fougasse bread which had taste of lemon zest and kalamata olives. This bread is also cooked in duck fat which gives this incredible taste. I'm a fan of Fournee and would love to come back again. read more

It slows service down even more & totally unnecessary b/c there is a Peet's Coffee next door. Now, the baked goods- outstanding! One of the best scones I've ever had- the walnut & coriander. I did order a sourdough loaf before and it was kind of burnt on the bottom and a bit pricy in my opinion. We absolutely love the croissants from Fournee. We don't come here very often because it's quite far from us but whenever my husband is in the area, he brings some home. the best almond croissant i have ever eaten. very crunchy and the filling had a great, non artificial/overpowering flavor, and the texture of the almonds was so good. interestingly the filling wasn't inside of the croissant but on top of it, so you end up with an extra crunchy top which was awesome. boyfriend got ham and cheese which was also great. we will be coming back weekly now. read more

Really great bakery that I used to visit often when I lived in Berkeley. Tried their panettone and it was very good. The inclussions and flavor are incredible - and I am also a very big fan of the glaze. One note- I was told on the phone thst the Panettone gets baked Tuesday's and is ready to be sold on Wednesday's. I picked two up this past Wednesday - and tried one day of. It was a little dry to be honest making the denser base section less feathery and airy than I would normally expect. I was tempted to ask if they sold me left over panettone from laat week- but figured the flavor was good enough that I wouldn't bother them about that. I get it, Panettone is of the hardest breads to make just right! I've tried to fir 4 years in a row and that's why I just opted to buy it this year haha.4/5 bexause the flavor is still that good- and anyone who is uninitiated will be appreciative. read more

We crave that great unattainable quality of pastry and bread that seems to only be captured by our European allies. Fournée comes close in this endeavor. However, the sleeper hit was the walnut and coriander scone. The only flaws in this buttered sanctuary is the line and how the quality of items seems to swing wildly. Starting to break from the norms and checkout some new businesses. It was tough to find a parking spot with the location being close to the Claremont Hotel and limited street parking available. I had to park down the hill and walk back up. There was also a short line which was an indicator that it's all good ! Croissant layers were buttery and the flavors are everything you want in a pastry, whether it is sweet or savory.
