Outbaking on Shattuck, Ukrainian rugelach bakery started by a Berkeley guy from Odessa who figured out a way to give refugee women actual work and income. Every dollar goes to those families. That backstory alone would be enough but the pastry is genuinely excellent. Tried the poppy seed and apricot, flaky butter crust, not too sweet, the filling ratio is right. The layers are incredibly thin, which allows for more filling and gives a flakier texture. I love the strawberry and apricot flavors! Had their apricot rugelach at Artis Coffee in Berkeley (Fourth Street) and it had nice flavor without being overwhelmingly sweet like other rugelach can be. The pastry had a good amount of bite and was not too soft. This bakery is run by Ukranian refugees in Berkeley and they don't sell out of a storefront, but you can get the rugelach at various Bay Area cafes. The purpose of the bakery is to provide jobs and resources for the Ukrainian community. read more

We ordered a combination of apricot, raspberry, and poppy seed rugelach from Outbaking for our wedding night, and people were talking about it all night! It was the perfect dessert for our guests, as well as an excellent breakfast item the next morning at our picnic brunch. The rugelach were not too sweet (a high compliment from our Asian guests!) and had an amazing chewy, light texture. Sasha was incredibly kind and flexible for our pick-up needs; our friend who picked up our order for us had lovely things to say about the experience as well. I have had this bookmarked since I read about it in Yelp's Hot & New Businesses email a while ago. I used to be a huge fan of the rugelach at Saul's and then the baker moved on. This was a couple of years ago. Today when Mary and I met for lunch at Café Leila I noticed that they had them, poppy seed, apricot and strawberry. Poppy seed would have been my preference, but when I got to the front of the line they were sold out of it, so I ordered on apricot. After I finished my lunch I had the rugelach. The pastry was flaky and the filling was apricot jam combined w/ finely chopped nuts, walnuts, I think. It was good, although just a bit sweeter than I prefer. The poppy seed would most likely be more to my taste. I may still order half a dozen from Outbaking for pickup rather than chance standing in line here and finding them sold out again. read more

I have been a long-time fan of rugalach so after catching Outbaking's background story in Berkeleyside, I placed a pick-up order. Verdict: these rugalach taste fantastic! At present, they are basically a wholesale business and do not have a walk-in retail location. Their website lists the various cafes, grocery stores etc. where you can buy their rugalach. Their direct-to-consumer pre-orders, as another reviewer pointed out, has a $50 minimum. I did that and shared the delicious rugalach and Outbaking's story with friends and neighbors. My mom is Ukrainian and I wanted to surpise her with some Rugelash while visiting this summer. Sasha and his team were over the top preparing the little treats, making sure they were well packed and protected for the long travel. When I gave the box to my mom, she had tears in her eyes. She knows those Rugelash, I bought the first ones 2 years ago when she was visiting me. The first bite she took, her eyes started to tear up, and she said "this is exactly what my mom would make, exactly the same taste, I never had one so similar since she passed 20 years ago". It made her cry.. and I cried to... Being able to bring her so much joy and souvenirs in one bite of a pastry was unbelievable but true... Thank you Sasha and the girls for keeping those traditions alive in such an authentic way. Not only it tastes like the real ones but it also helps Ukrainian refugees... Wow! Delicious! We ordered all three available flavors of rugelach (black sesame, apricot and strawberry) and I can't decide which is best! We ordered almost two dozen thinking to share with neighbors and family but upon delivery and tasting them my wife and I ate six within minutes and now think there's not enough left to share! lol.
