What a delightful find after a morning of bike ride into Berkeley. We stashed our bikes and quickly became immersed with the variety of colorful, tantalizing pastries beautifully displayed inside the cafe. Eclairs galore! Friendly server quickly got our tea and iced latte out. I also couldn't resist a chocolate dipped scallop shaped cookie which turned out to be two sandwiched together. My boyfriend and I grabbed a quick lunch here after studying next door at Heyma. The cashier was really friendly and answered all our questions. We shared the Merguez Sandwich and a Rose Pistachio Turkish Delight. They don't have any indoor seating but have a few tables outside. We waited about 10 minutes for our sandwich. The sandwich was delicious! We got it medium spicy and it was perfect for us. I would have loved it if it had a bit more sauce to it because it was a bit dry but the flavor was great. The turkish delight was so yummy and I thought it was also well priced. I'll happily be back in the future to try more of their foods and pastries! Belmo Café is an absolute gem. The Merguez sandwiches and chicken sandwiches are delicious, full of flavor, and always perfectly made. Their French and Algerian pastries are beautiful and incredibly tasty. The Mahjouba is a must--so flavorful and comforting. On top of the amazing food, the owner and all the staff are genuinely kind and welcoming, which makes the experience even better. This is a tiny, cute cafe across from the Holiday Inn Express. Luckily, a customer with a thick French accent (oui oui) helped us choose from the large selection of goodies. Our favorite was the baklava with pistachios. It was nicely balanced and not too sweet. Unfortunately, I mostly tasted a strong soap flavor in the other items we chose. I assume it's rose water, but not sure. Since the owner was kind and the variety was amazing, my friend and I plan to return and try something else. read more

A smorgasbord of delicious desserts. So many options of tasty treats. Everything I tried was yummy to the tummy. So many to try I can't wait to go back. They also have sandwiches which I didnt try yet. The items weren't clearly marked with prices atleast to what I could see. I prefer to know how much each item is I'm paying for. I had to just trust the worker was adding it all up correctly. Im not even sure if I was over charged or not. It was quite pricey for the amount I got. I might never know haha. This place has incredible food. It's one of the many hidden gems located in Berkeley but it's a spot that should be put on much higher notice. Every single thing I ate there was absolutely delicious. Literally everything: the sandwiches and the desserts I give the highest praise in addition to their service. The place carries one of those energies that fills you with excitement as you look around the store and embrace the reality of having the chance to try so many different pastries. The atmosphere is a huge win, and even though it's not much the outside eating area is just right and makes this place ideal for going out with a friend or significant other. Where they should definitely improve listing the names of each item store on their display art or inside. I assume it's because they have so many options. It's just easier for them to have the customers point out the items that they want but for me when it comes to a review, it's almost impossible because I don't know what everything was titled in addition to not even really knowing entirely what it was that I ate. A lot of the items they sell here are obvious to the naked eye, but it's still incredibly difficult to describe them entirely. But putting that aside, I look forward to coming back here again. Wow this isn't a place where I will go above and beyond out of my way to visit, I enjoyed it enough that I'm telling anyone to go over there if they're in that area and also giving a major word of advice that would easily make it more convenient for consumers to see what they have available at the hopefully increase their customer base. When visiting A friend we wanted to find a yummy local pastry shop for breakfast... After a search on Yelp, this place came up and we decided to head that way. Once we arrived, it was obvious that this is a hidden gem, which was a delight for both the eyes and the nose! It was filled with a variety of French and Algerian delights in our eyes couldn't almost take it all in. So many options! We asked the owner some of his recommendations as well as purchased a classic - chocolate croissant. They have seating outside, but the inside is for ordering and taking away . Once we made our selections, the owner brought it out to us, as well as some Turkish tea, which was the perfect combination with the amazing pastries. My favorite was the Algerian almond sweet, which tasted a bit like marzipan, but wasn't overly sugary. So delicious! We loved it so much we're headed down there again today to pick up things for friends. This would definitely be a go to Shopp if I lived in the area. This is a must stop in Berkeley for treats! Probably the best baklava I've ever had is being made inside the small but mighty cafe right off College. The owner of this establishment really makes sure you're going to leave happy and satisfied even to the point where he gives you samples to try desserts that you might not have normally tried! A number of times he has given me a treat to try and I ended up ordering 10 after because the flavor is unreal. So for service I would give them a 10/10 The amount of pastries they have each day is seriously epic with them having different selections of products each day. Just love this bakeshop as soon as you walk in, the aroma of freshly baked goods just lingers in the air. I was surprised how much selections of baked goods they have. It was definitely a hard decision on what to buy. So I got some of my favorites the baklava, banana bread, pistachio cream croissant, tiramisu, and the pistachio latte and Turkish coffee to go with the pastries. What a pleasantly sweet discovery! While roaming Berkeley with my friend, she requested I take us to Belmo Cafe. She was given their pastries and enjoyed them, so she wanted to stop by the store-front. The family-owned cafe is easy to pass by, so I'm not surprised I hadn't been before! The store is quite small and tight, only fitting a few people inside with several tables for two outside. Inside your eyes are delighted with a mixture of French, Turkish, and Algerian desserts and pastries plus a variety of drinks to pair with it. The worker helping us was knowledgeable, generous, and a lot of fun to talk to! We loved how unique the variety was for treats! Not many are labeled but the worker helped identify what were in the pastry cases. My friend had the Tiramisu and I had the Baklava. The baklava was sweet, syrupy, and light. My friend enjoyed her tiramisu. We also had the opportunity to try other baklavas which were delicious. Belmo Cafe is a hidden gem in Berkeley offering a wide variety of baked goods. If not for Yelp I might have missed out on the Gourmet Ghetto of Middle Eastern treats and coffee in West Berkeley, on University Avenue. The French-Algerian inspired Belmo Cafe and nearby neighbor, Heyma Yemeni Coffee are literally the one two punch of cafe deliciousness. After grabbing a dynamite spice and cardamon infused latte at Heyma, we wandered into Belmo and saw a gorgeous assortment of French pastries, but what really got us drooling was their beautiful section of enormous and exquisite Turkish delight, of which we tried a strawberry pistachio, a hazelnut and a chocolate filled variety, each more delicious than the last. These are special, fresh and homemade. A bevy of French and Algerian pastries are sold here, and trust me the Turkish delight is particularly wonderful. read more

Pastries to die for. Belmo Cafe's selection of North African/Mediterranean baked goods is impressive. This might be my new go-to bakery. The store is small and narrow, but packed absolutely full of goodies. Alongside the window are self-serve savory pastries, while the display hosts rows upon rows of desserts. On top are cookies and non-refrigerated treats. They have a bit of everything. Apparently some of these are baked by the owner's wife in their own home. Most are made freshly in-store. CHEESE QUICHE: The staff heated this up for us ^_^ Sooo good and very light. More of a chewy, fluffy texture than melty. PRINCESS CAKE: Ahhh I've been looking for a place with good princess cake! Theirs is so airy and creamy. Just the right amount of marzipan. Not too sweet at all. KADAIF: So rich and indulgent. The noodles are crisped well, and their phyllo pastry is light and buttery. I've been wanting to try Belmo for a while, and I happened to be in the area on Tuesday evening, so I decided to stop in and buy some pastries. I got a blueberry pomegranate pistachio Turkish delight (they have several different varieties, most involve pistachio, fruits, and/or hazelnut) and a fruit tart; they had multiple kinds of fruit tarts that have different fruits, some had bananas, tangerines, or kiwi, but I chose to get one that was almost all strawberries. The Turkish delight was a little too sweet to me. It's quite dense and chewy. I couldn't really make out the blueberry taste because it was so sweet but other than that, it was decent. The fruit tart was pretty good, it was mostly sweet and custardy, the strawberry itself tasted tart which I thought was a good counterbalance to the sweetness of the custard. There was only a little bit of blueberries. I did have a few alarming moments where something tasted almost mold-like to me, but I believed it was just my sensitive taste buds reacting to something in the strawberries or custard. I noticed that a lot of their non-French pastries are behind glass, are not labeled, and do not have price listed, which is not great for those of us with social anxiety since it requires you to ask many questions of the workers. The French pastries were labeled with the name and price which is great, but they were out in the open without covering, which makes me a bit concerned about how sanitary it would be if customers come in and cough or sneeze over them (especially since masking is not required.) I do appreciate the large variety of options offered, however. They also sell tea, coffee, cheesecake, and more savory sandwiches/cafe food. They have lots of small tables with fake flowers outside if you want to sit and enjoy your drink and snacks right outside. read more

Walked past this place when on my way to another coffee shop. But I had to stop in because of how many people were outside seating in the rain to enjoy their coffee and pastries! This small cafe has a ton of variety and delicious looking pastries. I decided to try the Italian donuts stuffed with chocolate, white chocolate and hazelnut spread. Gee, I would've never known about this blip of a spot on University Avenue had I not taken a long stroll from the UC campus to San Pablo Avenue. It's not the most exciting walk to take, but who could blame me for feeling peckish toward the end of it? While there are several food and coffee options on San Pablo, I was intrigued by what I saw through the front door. It's a compact but fully equipped bakery cafe that specializes in French and Algerian pastries. That's because Chef Nadir has spent a quarter-century crafting artisan sweets in both cultures. Just one look through the display case proves his talent as I couldn't decide which one to try. I went with the $5.50 Algerian dessert called Ktayef, a baklava-like dessert of toasted shredded dough (photo: https://bit.ly/3UrDaCn). It's filled with ground almonds and doused in orange blossom water and honey. The taste and texture reminded me of the similar Turkish Knafeh dessert though it was smaller like a shredded wheat cereal. honestly.. where do I start? we pulled up and instantly felt like I transported to Astoria, NYC (-a nyc lover). I was already excited to have found an Algerian pastry shop and then we had so many options (and found out they sell food too). The worker was kind and helpful in suggestions knowing it was our first time visiting. Their hours are also great, allowing you to stop for late night bites.
