What a delightful find after a morning of bike ride into Berkeley. We stashed our bikes and quickly became immersed with the variety of colorful, tantalizing pastries beautifully displayed inside the cafe. Eclairs galore! Friendly server quickly got our tea and iced latte out. I also couldn't resist a chocolate dipped scallop shaped cookie which turned out to be two sandwiched together. Very flaky texture and lightly sweetened which was perfect. We saw that they also offered different savory sandwiches and a "French taco" lol. Will have to return and try next time!
The cheesecake was SO. GOOD. I need to go back to try their other cheesecake flavors. This place had about a billion different pastries/baked goods. I wasn't a huge fan of the baklava it was a bit too nutty but it was still good
This is a tiny, cute cafe across from the Holiday Inn Express. Luckily, a customer with a thick French accent (oui oui) helped us choose from the large selection of goodies. Our favorite was the baklava with pistachios. It was nicely balanced and not too sweet. Unfortunately, I mostly tasted a strong soap flavor in the other items we chose. I assume it's rose water, but not sure. Since the owner was kind and the variety was amazing, my friend and I plan to return and try something else.
Passed by here for some desserts/pastries to take home after having coffee somewhere else. The place is small but offers a wide variety of pastries. Service and staff were unremarkable. I wish they'd put the names of items on each tray of pastry so I can put a name to what I'm supposed to review on. Having said that, the three pastries I bought were just okay.
So much deliciousness to choose from - so get a box! Outdoor seating great for people watching. Friendly, helpful staff
A smorgasbord of delicious desserts. So many options of tasty treats. Everything I tried was yummy to the tummy. So many to try I can't wait to go back. They also have sandwiches which I didnt try yet. The items weren't clearly marked with prices atleast to what I could see. I prefer to know how much each item is I'm paying for. I had to just trust the worker was adding it all up correctly. Im not even sure if I was over charged or not. It was quite pricey for the amount I got. I might never know haha. Ask how much everything is before purchasing, just my advise. Pro tip: hard to find parking on the street, they have a small alley leading to a parking lot in the back.
This place has incredible food. It's one of the many hidden gems located in Berkeley but it's a spot that should be put on much higher notice. Every single thing I ate there was absolutely delicious. Literally everything: the sandwiches and the desserts I give the highest praise in addition to their service. The place carries one of those energies that fills you with excitement as you look around the store and embrace the reality of having the chance to try so many different pastries. The atmosphere is a huge win, and even though it's not much the outside eating area is just right and makes this place ideal for going out with a friend or significant other. Where they should definitely improve listing the names of each item store on their display art or inside. I assume it's because they have so many options. It's just easier for them to have the customers point out the items that they want but for me when it comes to a review, it's almost impossible because I don't know what everything was titled in addition to not even really knowing entirely what it was that I ate. A lot of the items they sell here are obvious to the naked eye, but it's still incredibly difficult to describe them entirely. But putting that aside, I look forward to coming back here again. Wow this isn't a place where I will go above and beyond out of my way to visit, I enjoyed it enough that I'm telling anyone to go over there if they're in that area and also giving a major word of advice that would easily make it more convenient for consumers to see what they have available at the hopefully increase their customer base. Overall, Belmo Cafe gets a 4/5.
Small but pretty Well decorated, well themed Service was quick and friendly Got a few random selection New pastry and ingredients/flavors to try Will come back again
When visiting A friend we wanted to find a yummy local pastry shop for breakfast... After a search on Yelp, this place came up and we decided to head that way. Once we arrived, it was obvious that this is a hidden gem, which was a delight for both the eyes and the nose! It was filled with a variety of French and Algerian delights in our eyes couldn't almost take it all in. So many options! We asked the owner some of his recommendations as well as purchased a classic - chocolate croissant. They have seating outside, but the inside is for ordering and taking away . Once we made our selections, the owner brought it out to us, as well as some Turkish tea, which was the perfect combination with the amazing pastries. My favorite was the Algerian almond sweet, which tasted a bit like marzipan, but wasn't overly sugary. So delicious! We loved it so much we're headed down there again today to pick up things for friends. This would definitely be a go to Shopp if I lived in the area. I highly recommend going often and trying all of their varieties. Yum!
Browsing IG I came across Belmo Cafe and you know for sure the video and pictures don't justified what you will find and where. After dinner with my family we decided to give it a try and stop by the cafe, we picked up a few desserts since all of them were Turkish sweets There are couple tables outside but not a place to seat and hangout in the windy weather but probably for the summer night might work better The guy who help us out was really friendly, and Knowledgeable good customer service.
This is a must stop in Berkeley for treats! Probably the best baklava I've ever had is being made inside the small but mighty cafe right off College. The owner of this establishment really makes sure you're going to leave happy and satisfied even to the point where he gives you samples to try desserts that you might not have normally tried! A number of times he has given me a treat to try and I ended up ordering 10 after because the flavor is unreal. So for service I would give them a 10/10 The amount of pastries they have each day is seriously epic with them having different selections of products each day. Give this place a try if you're looking for a snack or a treat in the east bay.
Just stopped by for a coffee and croissant and picked up some pastries. All delicious - you can't go wrong here. A real gem.
Gee, I would've never known about this blip of a spot on University Avenue had I not taken a long stroll from the UC campus to San Pablo Avenue. It's not the most exciting walk to take, but who could blame me for feeling peckish toward the end of it? While there are several food and coffee options on San Pablo, I was intrigued by what I saw through the front door. It's a compact but fully equipped bakery cafe that specializes in French and Algerian pastries. That's because Chef Nadir has spent a quarter-century crafting artisan sweets in both cultures. Just one look through the display case proves his talent as I couldn't decide which one to try. I went with the $5.50 Algerian dessert called Ktayef, a baklava-like dessert of toasted shredded dough (photo: https://bit.ly/3UrDaCn). It's filled with ground almonds and doused in orange blossom water and honey. The taste and texture reminded me of the similar Turkish Knafeh dessert though it was smaller like a shredded wheat cereal. Accompanied by a $3 cup of Coffee, it was a genuine sweet treat that I enjoyed at one of their little yellow sidewalk cafe tables (photo: https://bit.ly/3KTyfqH). What a nice, uniquely exotic find. DESSERT - 5 stars...perfect Algerian sweet on a plate AMBIANCE - 4.5 stars...charming little closet of a cafe SERVICE - 4.5 stars...the chef was quiet but cordial TOTAL - 5 stars...for something completely different RELATED - Exploring Berkeley? Authentic Algerian delights. Get the merguez sandwich, you can thank me later. Tea is worth trying with any of the sweets, after you get a sandwich. Exceptional service. Clean. Fast. read more

honestly.. where do I start? we pulled up and instantly felt like I transported to Astoria, NYC (-a nyc lover). I was already excited to have found an Algerian pastry shop and then we had so many options (and found out they sell food too). The worker was kind and helpful in suggestions knowing it was our first time visiting. Their hours are also great, allowing you to stop for late night bites. It's honestly such a gem and more people should come experience it! Don't forget to try their food and coffee as well read more
Yes Yes Yes. Variety of pastries, offering Algerian, French, and Turkish pastries. All - at least those that I got. These pastries, though diabetes inducing looking, were surprisingly not sweet like those pastries where one bite is enough. I loved them all! Don't forget to try a Turkish coffee, it's like Cuban cafecito size don't expect to make a breakfast out of that coffee if you are one of those (at least I am, a cup of coffee is enough as breakfast for me). Btw, they open at 6am and close at 930pm (I forgot if this is workday or M, F, S ). This is a tiny cafe, sitting area is outside on the street. Cute tables and chairs. Not a good spot for y'all who love to study at a cafe unless you love being cold and you don't get distracted by cars and people passing by. Parking sucks, this is Berkeley, what do you expect and on top of that it's on University. So good luck. The owner, Nadir, was friendly and so patient. I took my time choosing my pastries because they all look delicious and I wanted to get them all. He answered all my questions knowing I won't get every single item I asked. read more

the loveliest local bakery -- as soon as i walked in, i was greeted by the sight of so many delectable pastries & even more being freshly baked! the blackberry fruit tart tasted super fresh and not overly sweet, and the pistachio flavor worked beautifully into the mille feuille. the owner / baker was so sweet, and i would definitely recommend for anyone craving pastries!! read more
I've walked by this place multiple times and Im glad I finally decided to stop and try something! The shop is a bit small but it is FULL of delicious looking desserts. I was in the mood for baklava and decided to try the pistachio chocolate option they have. At $3 for a small bite size piece it is a bit pricey, however, it was so delicious! It was moist and just melted in my mouth. The texture of the pistachio provides a nice contrast for the soft phyllo dough. The chocolate flavor wasn't overwhelming which I greatly appreciated. The person who as assisted me was super friendly. I will definitely stop by again! read more

Tiny family owned pastry shop, offers outdoor seating only. The owner is extremely friendly. They have all kind of pastries, including croissants, macarons, lemon meringue tarts and turkey desserts as well. Turkey coffee is also available. I can't name all the turkey dessert, but will try to come back for more. Tried the pistachio baklava and pistachio macaron. The macaron was overpowered with some artificial flavors. For the baklava, I think it's well balanced on sweetness. Great to pair with a black coffee or latte. Prices are reasonable too. read more

Walked past this place when on my way to another coffee shop. But I had to stop in because of how many people were outside seating in the rain to enjoy their coffee and pastries! This small cafe has a ton of variety and delicious looking pastries. I decided to try the Italian donuts stuffed with chocolate, white chocolate and hazelnut spread. The man who checked us out was super friendly and gave my spouse and I both a small pastry each! It was a small gesture that meant a lot to both of us . We will definitely be back to try more and support this great small business! read more
DELIGHTED by their gluten free options. All gf cakes ( there were about 5 when we went) were gorgeous. We picked a raspberry crème brûlée dome. Nice strong raspberry taste and interesting combo with the brûlée Coffee: had a mocha with soy. It was good. read more

What a cute little bakery!! We were looking for desserts that's not sit-down or ice cream and this little gem popped up. With so many 5 stars review, we were super curious. The shop is small but walking in, we were blown away with the variety of treats that greeted us! Everything looks amazing and it was hard to decide! The service is so friendly and with such a warm smile - he was patient when we had questions. We got the fruit tart, tiramisu, and chocolate/vanilla eclair - everything was exquisite! We loved everything we got there and the baklavas all look so delicious! We were given a sample of a delicious pistachio Algerian pastry and we were hooked. The flavor was intense in all the best ways and we will sure to come back and try all the other treats soon. read more
Cute little Turkish cafe with outdoor street seating. Carrot cake was delicious, and I don't even know the name of the other pistachio pastry we got, but it had a warm spiced taste. The chai was also some of the best chai I've ever had. Very nicely spiced. read more

Thanks again to my yelpers for recommending this spot! This place is such a vibe I'm a complete noob to Turkish and Algerian cafe but man oh man was I missing out!! First time trying Turkish coffee I would definitely get it again. For those who are new to it, it's definitely a stronger coffee with a good kick so one cup should be fine (no need to add sugar or milk) If you don't know what to order, just ask what they recommend, I had 0 knowledge walking in, went with what the girl in the front suggested 5/5 on her picks! Outside sitting area is such a vibe I just love the set up. Ben is a chill person and funny. If you want to have coffee and chill with someone this is your spot to catch up. read more
Was driving up University looking for take out to watch some football when we stumbled upon Belmo Cafe. We were pleasantly overwhelmed by the assortment of sweets and savory offerings. We settled on the merguez sandwich and chicken sandwich, bowl of bean (and veggie) soup and one of the Algerian pastries (ground pistachio on top, shredded filo and honey). We waited a little bit as they prepped the sandwiches fresh! As we waited outside, we noticed that they opened to 10pm on 5 nights and have found our new after dinner feasted spot. When we got our food, they gave us 2 free sodas! The sandwiches were a bit salty but fresh and substantial- worth the $13.95. The soup was so big, I saved more than half for the next day. I ate my entire pastry. Can't wait to be back to try everything else! read more

My husband and I - ok, it was really just me - wanted to grab something "cake-y" on the way home from dinner at Homeroom's Berkeley outpost. As it turns out, 7:45 PM on a Monday evening isn't the best time to search the surrounding area for baked goods. Thankfully, Belmo popped up on Yelp and they've got business hours that made me grateful, but also a little wary. Was I happy to see a bakery open that late? Yes. Was I also a little concerned about the variety of items and freshness that late in the evening? Yes. When we arrived, there were good portions of their refrigerated shelves that were wholly cleaned out (probably the fruit tart portion). There was still so much left to choose from, though, but very few things labelled. I didn't want to bother the guy behind the counter since he said it was only his second day on the job, so I pointed to the chocolate-vanilla eclair (labeled) and what looked like a three layered mousse... thing (not labeled). At $3 for the eclair and $7 for the circular mousse thing, it's not cheap, but it's also about the going rate for these kinds of pastries. The guy at the register boxed and bagged our items, and also included two forks. There is some seating right outside the bakery, but we opted to eat our pastries in the car because it was getting cold out. The eclair choux pastry and chocolate exterior were good, but the interior vanilla cream was pretty flavorless. The real winner of the evening was the still nameless triple layer mousse thing. I almost sent my husband back into the store to buy his own. We generally try and avoid getting to places that pass through the chaos that is 80, 580 and 880 merging altogether, but had a pleasant enough experience that we toyed with the idea of getting there early enough to sample more of their offerings with coffee on some random weekend morning. read more

Beautiful bakery, we found it while we were just roaming around from Oakland to San Francisco and craving something sweet. All the pastries were absolutely delicious, we killed them in one day. my boyfriend was so excited to eat a croissant and said it was SO MOUTH WATERING!!!! The croissant didn't make it the 600 feet to the car from the bakery, he ate is hella fast. Place was fairly easy to find, service was amazing, the girl who was helping us out, did a lovely job, remembering every pastry that I asked her to get me in the box, she explained all the differences between the baklava that they had, all in all I loved the vibes. Even though we came a little later in the day, there was still a lot of options to pick from, kinda sad to think not a lot of people go there:( I would 100% recommend and will be coming back:) read more

Hubs suggested desserts for dinner and of course said yes. Sweet French Algerian cafe with gluten free for me! Service extremely friendly and they are open late to serve your sweet tooth. read more
Celiac review: some variety for gluten free people. They say their cakes are gluten free however they are made with semolina which is not, unfortunately. The mousse-based sweets and Turkish delight are gf though. Mostly Algerian sweets. I really enjoy it there. Because their menu is constantly changing, you need to ask the owner to point out gf items to you. This sounds sketchy combined with the fact that there's no separate gf kitchen here, but I have never been glutened here. With that in mind, if you are strict about cross contamination, I would not risk it at Belmo. read more

Belmo Cafe picks up where "Wanted" et al. was before. same small space. outside seating only. i only saw pastries and covfee available. pastries didn't have labels. asked for the least sweet one. drink: med covfee (2.5) didn't specify dark roast -was a nice bold, smooth medium type of roast. very nice eats: "Kroket" (3) some kind of thick bread like "cake" that's a cookie -came in an aluminum foil bag, not a glassine bag. would have definitely kept a few days. ate it quickly within a day. genre is algerian re: reviews. -it was pretty sweet, no aftertaste. the "cake" crumpled easily. nothing wrong, that's the characteristic of this pastry. 4.5 stars service was quick, cordial, courteous. answers provided smilingly. parking is an issue..... read more
