These pastries, though diabetes inducing looking, were surprisingly not sweet like those pastries where one bite is enough. I loved them all! Don't forget to try a Turkish coffee, it's like Cuban cafecito size don't expect to make a breakfast out of that coffee if you are one of those (at least I am, a cup of coffee is enough as breakfast for me). Btw, they open at 6am and close at 930pm (I forgot if this is workday or M, F, S ). This is a tiny cafe, sitting area is outside on the street. Cute tables and chairs. Not a good spot for y'all who love to study at a cafe unless you love being cold and you don't get distracted by cars and people passing by. I've walked by this place multiple times and Im glad I finally decided to stop and try something! The shop is a bit small but it is FULL of delicious looking desserts. I was in the mood for baklava and decided to try the pistachio chocolate option they have. At $3 for a small bite size piece it is a bit pricey, however, it was so delicious! It was moist and just melted in my mouth. The texture of the pistachio provides a nice contrast for the soft phyllo dough. The chocolate flavor wasn't overwhelming which I greatly appreciated. They have all kind of pastries, including croissants, macarons, lemon meringue tarts and turkey desserts as well. Turkey coffee is also available. I can't name all the turkey dessert, but will try to come back for more. Tried the pistachio baklava and pistachio macaron. The macaron was overpowered with some artificial flavors. The Algerian sandwiches are one of the best, unique foods served here. Was driving up University looking for take out to watch some football when we stumbled upon Belmo Cafe. We were pleasantly overwhelmed by the assortment of sweets and savory offerings. We settled on the merguez sandwich and chicken sandwich, bowl of bean (and veggie) soup and one of the Algerian pastries (ground pistachio on top, shredded filo and honey). We waited a little bit as they prepped the sandwiches fresh! As we waited outside, we noticed that they opened to 10pm on 5 nights and have found our new after dinner feasted spot. When we got our food, they gave us 2 free sodas! The sandwiches were a bit salty but fresh and substantial- worth the $13.95. The soup was so big, I saved more than half for the next day. My husband and I - ok, it was really just me - wanted to grab something "cake-y" on the way home from dinner at Homeroom's Berkeley outpost. As it turns out, 7:45 PM on a Monday evening isn't the best time to search the surrounding area for baked goods. Thankfully, Belmo popped up on Yelp and they've got business hours that made me grateful, but also a little wary. Was I happy to see a bakery open that late? Yes. Was I also a little concerned about the variety of items and freshness that late in the evening? Yes. When we arrived, there were good portions of their refrigerated shelves that were wholly cleaned out (probably the fruit tart portion). There was still so much left to choose from, though, but very few things labelled. I didn't want to bother the guy behind the counter since he said it was only his second day on the job, so I pointed to the chocolate-vanilla eclair (labeled) and what looked like a three layered mousse... thing (not labeled). At $3 for the eclair and $7 for the circular mousse thing, it's not cheap, but it's also about the going rate for these kinds of pastries. The guy at the register boxed and bagged our items, and also included two forks. There is some seating right outside the bakery, but we opted to eat our pastries in the car because it was getting cold out. The eclair choux pastry and chocolate exterior were good, but the interior vanilla cream was pretty flavorless. The real winner of the evening was the still nameless triple layer mousse thing. I almost sent my husband back into the store to buy his own. We generally try and avoid getting to places that pass through the chaos that is 80, 580 and 880 merging altogether, but had a pleasant enough experience that we toyed with the idea of getting there early enough to sample more of their offerings with coffee on some random weekend morning. read more

Beautiful bakery, we found it while we were just roaming around from Oakland to San Francisco and craving something sweet. All the pastries were absolutely delicious, we killed them in one day. my boyfriend was so excited to eat a croissant and said it was SO MOUTH WATERING!!!! The croissant didn't make it the 600 feet to the car from the bakery, he ate is hella fast. Place was fairly easy to find, service was amazing, the girl who was helping us out, did a lovely job, remembering every pastry that I asked her to get me in the box, she explained all the differences between the baklava that they had, all in all I loved the vibes. Celiac review: some variety for gluten free people. They say their cakes are gluten free however they are made with semolina which is not, unfortunately. The mousse-based sweets and Turkish delight are gf though. Mostly Algerian sweets. I really enjoy it there. Because their menu is constantly changing, you need to ask the owner to point out gf items to you. This sounds sketchy combined with the fact that there's no separate gf kitchen here, but I have never been glutened here. With that in mind, if you are strict about cross contamination, I would not risk it at Belmo. read more

On two separate occasions, I arrived at the café around 9:15 PM with a friend, after confirming online that the store closes at 10 PM. However, despite the café being open, the staff informed us that they were closed. What stood out more was their attitude--it felt dismissive and not very welcoming. I understand that closing routines may begin before the official closing time, but as a customer, it's discouraging to be turned away when the business is still open according to the stated hours. I believe customer service is a core part of the great reputation Belmo has, and I'm hoping this feedback helps maintain that standard. read more

Found this small cafe full of delightful desserts after dinner around the area and definitely have the go back to try more! They had a variety of Turkish desserts and Algerian desserts. Hours on Yelp is wrong. We went there at 6:50pm on a Sunday and was told that they were about to close. Yelp says that they close at midnight and that the hours were verified by the owners 3 months ago. We felt rushed and it was frustrating. We liked what we got but did not like the whole experience. It's a perfect place for all of us who crave "something sweet" later in a day. So many amazing places close pretty early but Belmo Cafe has extended hours so they can truly accommodate everyone else. Plus you can never go wrong with places that have 5 stars from my fellows Yelpers! It's a mix of French and Algerian pastries and sweets. They also have some Turkish delights. I really liked Algerian savory pastry: I forgot it's proper name but it's kinda like a lavash (super thin bread) with some various fillings inside. Mine had cheese and tomato sauce. I've tried a few things (seems like they change their offerings quite often as I didn't see lots of items mentioned in the other reviews but their cases were very well stocked). Croissants were pretty buttery and flakey. Eclair was delicious. I really loved the little white pastry. It was super moist and had lemon taste, and it was covered in sugar powder. Street parking only, definitely more of a "to go" place as it's pretty tiny inside. I really loved this place but not sure if it was enough for me to really crave something but I am sure I will be back! read more

This new cafe serves up spectacular Algerian and French inspired pastries and cakes! They have a vast and I mean vast selection to choose from. It was a bit overwhelming but in a good way lol. I didn't even know where to start, so I spoke with the kind staff to make a variety pack for me. They were super helpful and I left with a great selection. The pistachio and baklava were my favorite. I haven't mastered the names of all of them, so hopefully the pictures suffice. In addition to sweets, they have a coffee and tea menu with very reasonable prices!
