I wanted to share some feedback regarding my recent visits to Belmo Café in Berkeley. On two separate occasions, I arrived at the café around 9:15 PM with a friend, after confirming online that the store closes at 10 PM. However, despite the café being open, the staff informed us that they were closed. What stood out more was their attitude--it felt dismissive and not very welcoming. I understand that closing routines may begin before the official closing time, but as a customer, it's discouraging to be turned away when the business is still open according to the stated hours. I believe customer service is a core part of the great reputation Belmo has, and I'm hoping this feedback helps maintain that standard. read more

Stumbling upon this quaint Algerian exquisite family owned & run bakery was such a great accident. Had intended taking pics but the goods were consumed too quickly! Besides being a gem with phenomenal coffees, homemade sandwiches, wraps, and traditional Algerian pastries, as if it wasn't enough, husband and wife team welcomes each customer warmly as if you're stepping into their home. They were absolutely lovely! Often bakeries can have overly sweet bakery treats, yet we could truly taste the almond "cream filled U- shaped pastry " - actual name - with multiple & thinnest layering of this delectable paste! It's like nothing you'll ever find again yet you chase that dream of finding it just once more..... okay I know, It's not unlike an addiction! It's a perfect place for all of us who crave "something sweet" later in a day. So many amazing places close pretty early but Belmo Cafe has extended hours so they can truly accommodate everyone else. Plus you can never go wrong with places that have 5 stars from my fellows Yelpers! It's a mix of French and Algerian pastries and sweets. They also have some Turkish delights. I really liked Algerian savory pastry: I forgot it's proper name but it's kinda like a lavash (super thin bread) with some various fillings inside. Mine had cheese and tomato sauce. I've tried a few things (seems like they change their offerings quite often as I didn't see lots of items mentioned in the other reviews but their cases were very well stocked). Croissants were pretty buttery and flakey. Eclair was delicious. I really loved the little white pastry. It was super moist and had lemon taste, and it was covered in sugar powder. Street parking only, definitely more of a "to go" place as it's pretty tiny inside. I really loved this place but not sure if it was enough for me to really crave something but I am sure I will be back! read more

This new cafe serves up spectacular Algerian and French inspired pastries and cakes! They have a vast and I mean vast selection to choose from. It was a bit overwhelming but in a good way lol. I didn't even know where to start, so I spoke with the kind staff to make a variety pack for me. They were super helpful and I left with a great selection. The pistachio and baklava were my favorite. I haven't mastered the names of all of them, so hopefully the pictures suffice. In addition to sweets, they have a coffee and tea menu with very reasonable prices! I went by this morning because I had a lemon bar last night from this bakery that was alright and peeked my interest. When I entered there was a man outside at the curb having an animated conversation with another man. I went inside and waited several minutes for the man to return to help me. I was surprised at the number of pastries by the window that were not covered. Since Covid i guess I just expect items to be behind glass. I continued to wait. I said hello to confirm no one else was inside that could help me. After waiting more than 4 minutes, I returned to my car. The man did try to talk to me as I walked away but I was no longer interested in patronizing the establishment. Hours on Yelp is wrong. We went there at 6:50pm on a Sunday and was told that they were about to close. Yelp says that they close at midnight and that the hours were verified by the owners 3 months ago. We felt rushed and it was frustrating. We liked what we got but did not like the whole experience. We were in the area and this place caught our eye so decided to stop by. There's only street parking. This place is small but it has a lot. Let me just start off by saying the customer service here is some of the best I've ever had. We were welcomed in we were able to ask questions. I think the person who helped us was the owner acknowledged my 4 year old son gave him a juice. He explained all the pastries which were amazing. First time trying Turkish coffee I would definitely get it again. For those who are new to it, it's definitely a stronger coffee with a good kick so one cup should be fine (no need to add sugar or milk) If you don't know what to order, just ask what they recommend, I had 0 knowledge walking in, went with what the girl in the front suggested 5/5 on her picks! When you walk in it's a small enough room to turn around in kinda spot, but they have chairs outside and they are hella nice! They have these bomb lamb and chicken sandwiches with fries in them (think swarms but on a baguette instead of a pita). It's Algerian and the desserts are all super good. The biggest Turkish delights and top tier pastries that taste good and baked in house. But the best part??? They open at 7am and close at 12 midnight!!! Everyday! read more

We are constantly in search of the blissful experience of perfect foods in this case it is the magnificent croissant! Having seen many of the Bay areas top rated spots I must say why wait in line, why be restricted on what you can purchase, why be directed what to do by a host that should be a prison guard! People wander in from the street, drawn by the perfect rows of Turkish delights and eclair's nestled comfortably on windowed shelves. The chef may come out and point his favorite treat of the day to you, and the cashier Mohammad asks your name and remembers it. This place feels like a home of sorts-- the delicious, warm kind that your grandmother created while she was in the kitchen. I wish I could give this place 100 stars! It has been on my bucket list in a while. There is a such a beautiful array of pastries and I wanted to try all of them. I work nearby and had been wanting to try this place for a while since I'm getting tired of my usual lunch spots. Needless to say, I won't be back. I really don't understand all these rave reviews because this place is mediocre at best and rarely busy despite the great street-side tables and late hours. Where do I even begin? There was a preschool-aged child sitting on the pastry case with the exposed pastries when I visited. I love kids but I'm pretty sure this is unhygienic and unsanitary. The Italian donuts I got were stale and old. It took 15+ minutes for my Algerian sandwich to be made, which is fine since there was only one person working and she told me ahead of time that there'd be a wait. The sandwich itself was actually fine but not what I expected when I ordered it as it was supposed to come with sausages and veggies according to the menu but instead came with sausages and French fries. The croissant sandwich with turkey I picked up for my coworker had exactly ONE slice of turkey, the croissant was in the same condition as the donuts, and there were no condiments added or included on the side. Overall, Belmo has a wonderful concept and potential to grow. But I'll honestly go to Subway the next time I want a filling sandwich. read more

My partner and I are lucky to live right next door to this amazing French-Algerian patisserie. Ever since they opened, we've tried almost everything and loved them all. Their pastries and desserts are never too sweet or heavy, just the right amount of flavor and texture. All the staff including owners Bel and Mo are very friendly! Our favorites include their Algerian specialties like zlabia, a fried dough soak soaked in a syrup. Sfanje, reminds us of large and fluffier beignets, best with their house tea! And their croissants are top notch, especially the ones filled with the most perfect frangipane. If you can get some fresh out of the oven, the warmth and flakiness is amazing! I was blown away by the variety when I walked in and it took me a good ten minutes to decide on what I should get without buying the whole store. They also had a wide variety of breakfast ready to make sandwich options. They sell Turkish coffee and wide variety of drinks.
