This morning a friend and I poked our heads in to see what Belmo Cafe had to offer. You are immediately hit with the smell of sweetness and spice. A pull at the senses dragging you without a hint of hesitation to follow. The assortment of pastries varies, from cheesecakes to croissants, danishes to cookies, filled and plain. The gentleman I saw making the pastries walked out to greet us. He told me to pick the almond croissant, just taken from the oven. Of course I listened and so damn glad I did. The croissant crust is honestly none I have ever tasted before. It is like a thin lace cookie, crusty, crunchy with a flavor few have ever experienced unless you visit here. It is so difficult to put into words what your mouth, nose and body experiences with each bite. I had to sit down for this one, it makes you want to slow and just be still in that moment...it is truly that good. Stop in and look around, your nose will lead you and your eyes will make you want to have one of everything. You won't be disappointed. There are coffee, espresso, chai and tea options from $2 to $4.75. I am not sure how much the pastries are, prices are not advertised, Between two people each leaving with a form of coffee and a pastry we paid $15 total. First time visiting on our way to the beach. Had the chocolate/vanilla eclair, coffee eclair, Italian doughnuts, peach fruit tart and my partner had the smoked salmon croissant sandwich. Small cafe tucked in on the side of university Ave though very inviting. Workers were welcoming and did not make us feel rushed. Grabbed two simple lattes and two almond croissants. Lattes were great and you get quite a bit for a good price especially in the area. Croissants were flaky and would have been better if we got them fresh but definitely something that I recommend is you are into the texture of croissants. Been here 3 times and each time we tried something different. Everything we've had has been really tasty and well made. I think the best thing we had so far was the chocolate/vanilla cake. The owners are very kind people with such talent. The French display case is very professional. The Algerian sweets are so good, they are similar to the Arab sweets I grew up with. I love Belmo. Everything I've had here is good and they are so kind and generous to my kids. If you go in the morning their breakfast pastries are hot and fresh out of the oven. Oh my goodness!!! This is the best kept secret on Univeristy!! The most amazing exquisite pastries, cakes, and confections not to mention great made to order gourmet coffee. There's a wonderful selection of authentic Algerian desserts and classic choices. The opera, tarts, and cheesecakes are out of this world but I can't help but go for the Algerian desserts-unique in flavor and texture. Made with so much love. Individual desert creations that are expertly crafted and skillfully decorated. Seriously, treat yourself, family, or friends to a selection of Belmo pastry today! I had to follow up with a visit to meet the chef, Nadir. French and Algerian pastries I asked, what's the connection? He said through a career of 10 years in Algeria, 8 in London, and a year and a half in Paris, perfecting french pastry. this place has the most delicious sweets, hats off to the lady who bakes. But sandwiches are no good. They put french fries IN the sandwich!? The coffee is a joke. The Turkish coffee is like drinking thick mud ... And it is not safe. The pavement in front of the entrance is very uneven and people fall. Also the umbrellas are not safe at all. They fall very easily... So if you go there, just carefully walk to the entrance door, purchase and LEAVE. read more

I can't believe it's taken this long to write this ode to Belmo Cafe -- I've visited Belmo Cafe with my kids almost weekly for about six months. In Berkeley we are lucky to have a number of phenomenal bakeries to choose from, but what keeps us coming back time and time again is truly Chef Nadir, who is so kind and generous -- to his customers, to City workers (I've seen our trusty sanitation engineers hop off their garbage trucks to grab a quick morning coffee to power them through their routes!), and to the children who visit -- even when they're not behaving their best. Our family's Belmo tradition started with Friday morning sweets before school. Now we've explored many and delicious treats from the Algerian side of the case -- I always ask Chef for his recommendation, and now I have my own favorites! And now we celebrate family birthdays and anniversaries with a large fruit tart, beautifully handmade by Chef Nadir. We are really happy that so many folks have discovered the simple joys of this place, and we plan to continue enjoying Belmo Cafe's treats for many years to come! read more

Extraordinarily good. The lamb merguez sandwich and the cheese "quiche" (really a flaky cheese pie) were delicious, and it's been ages since I have had such marvelous pastry. Belmo Cafe has batches baking all day long, which means when you arrive you're getting a super fresh croissant, unlike the nearby cafes which sell croissants baked the night before from wholesalers (for $1 more than Belmo, no less). Belmo croissants are made to perfection; soft buttery layers, moist but not greasy, delightfully crispy exterior, and generously sized. They have the classic viennoise selection of fruit danishes, almond croissants, chocolate croissants, and the like. This was the CUTEST, most welcoming, most delicious and beautiful cafe ever! It's so aesthetic, and when you walk in every wall is lined with baked goods. Each dessert is hand crafted in the store and each one is so gorgeous you will need a few moments to just soak everything in. It's a little bit on the pricier side (nothing under $5) but you know they make it by hand, right on site. And the owner/baker is SO SWEET, after paying for my order I asked him about the Algerian almond cookies because I've never seen them before, and I told him I would come back next time to try it.
