Fort St. George! Sounds like a British style pub full of pints of Guiness and soccer hooligans! I wouldn't describe this place like that. They are open late esp. on the weekend (2 am) so extra points for that. Located on the 2nd floor of building it shares with the Maekawa bar (they share the same kitchen) and Venus Karoake downstairs, this place is a haven for the those with late night proclivities. The crowd is young, and a mix of asians of many flavors. The music was mellow, trip hop, great for the 2am scene. The food is that strange Japanese/american style food (spaghetti w/hamburger) and stuff that seems to have a lot of Kewpie mayo on it. Not the strongest suit for this place. Usually if I want to eat, I go next door to the Maekawa bar which it is pretty much attached to on the same floor which has tasty Japanese vittles (see my review). Amazing Japanese comfort food. Comfort Food = Cheesy, Meaty, Starchy goodness. Why Fort St. George does it well? They combine all the necessities of what makes good comfort food, combine it all, add a generous amount of garlic mayo = excellent delivery. All the dishes have distinct different tastes. Ketchup Fried Rice with Omelette, and the Spaghetti with meat sauce, completely different from each other. Both, individually, a masterpiece all on its own. You get the fresh taste of tomatoey in the fried rice, and the fluffy, milky goodness in the eggs. The spaghetti is more savory, and garlicy, and intense beef flavor. But even with the intense beef flavors.. you can't go wrong by adding another japanese hamburguh! "trying to say that with an accent" on top. Mmmmm.. even the two different beefs are different in flavors and creates a different experience on your palette. Don't like japanese hamburguh? first... shut up. Yes you do. But maybe you've had too much of it for the last week.. don't fret, there are many other varieties of add ons :) Fort St. George's don't discriminate on your proteins. Chicken, Pork.. they gotchu. I used to eat here all the time in college! This used to be one of those restaurants that allowed smoking and everyone came here to light one up with their meal lol (Cigarrette of course!). I am no longer a smoker but yeah this place still reminds me of those days. My favorite dish is bacon and mushroom Doria. It's SOOOO GOOOOD in terms of taste, smell, and aroma, but it's a gut bomb for sure. I am sure it's like over 2000 Calories lol. I haven't been here in a while until today. I went there for lunch. I ordered the lunch special which came with spaghetti, rice and two entrees. I choose Hamburger steak and pork cutlet. All were yummy. Hamburger steak had a bit too much onions but that was alright. Love love love Fort St. George! Super friendly staff and yummy food. I am obsessed with the doria, especially the shrimp and mushroom. The dish comes out fresh from the oven with parmesan and Tabasco - it's like they know me! They also just have a really wide variety of other Japanese dishes like curry (with many different protein choices), spaghetti, and ramen. I also love their tempura because they have the authentic, light and crispy, Japanese style tempura.. Strange little hidden nook that's half restaurant half bar. It's located in a shopping center with a travel agent and toy store below. Walk up the circle stairs and it's all of the second floor. We came in on a weekend after hanging out in Chinatown. The décor and the furniture is nothing to look at but the food holds up well. We ordered gyoza, gizzard yakitori, a pork katsu donburi, and a tarako (cod roe) spaghetti. The food came out really fast. The meal came with 2 little cups of miso soup. The gyoza was good. They were small and flavorful. The gizzard yakitori was ok, could have used more seasoning and char on the grill. It also had the consistency of being boiled. No, but really, the spaghetti tasted really good. The noodles were just the right amount of chewiness and there was enough nori and roe to please me. The doria was good too, but really hot so be careful when taking your first bite! I'm a huge fan of risotto and cheese so this was a satisfactory meal. This place I crave often. My favorite dish is there Pesto chicken. The pesto is a green sauce and it's simply wonderful. Lately, I've been getting the broccoli and mushroom Doria, which is awesome. Food & Flavor: 4 Price: 4 Service & Experience: 3 The Service & Experience: Seattle is not inherently a "late-night city"--and while most restaurants in the area close by 8 or 9 PM, its a pleasant surprise to know that making your way up a slightly tattered mini-mall in the heart of International District can open the doors to a pleasantly nostalgic Japanese family restaurant open later than its surroundings. Our party of 6 walked in around 9PM to find a slightly crowded if not inefficiently seated restaurant and waited roughly 30 minutes to be seated. We noticed the servers were either understaffed or lagging, as there were a few larger tables they could have cleared to seat us earlier. They eventually had us split into two different tables instead. Otherwise the restaurant had the typical earmarks of a Japanese family restaurant ("fami-resu", as they're affectionately called in Japan)--similar to an American diner with prompt service but somehow always forgetting one thing (our server managed to forget a side dish of curry and an entire appetizer). For the setting and price, we weren't setting our expectations too high here though. The Price: Fami-resu in Japan are known to be cheap. Think Denny's, IHOP, Applebee's etc. but they happen to serve spaghetti, curry, and doria instead of pancakes and waffles. True to the atmosphere they've set for themselves, Fort St. George offers reasonable prices with main dishes spanning $10-12 and smaller side dishes between $5-8. Our table of 4 ordered two appetizers, four entrees, and a set of soft drinks for a total of $65. This is a no-frills type of place--it embodies the nostalgic restaurant your family can go to when the parents are too busy to cook, the kids want to go out to eat, and nobody wants to spend too much money to just eat some comfort food. The Flavor: Full disclosure here that my taste buds, which wholly enjoyed every dish here, are biased by nostalgia. I spent many childhood summers in Tokyo seeking out the comfort of meat spaghetti and omurice at our local fami-resu to avoid my mother's vegetable-laden cooking that my childhood self despised. Everything at Fort St. George--from the meat sauce + garlic mayo spaghetti, to bacon + mushroom doria, and even the french fries dipped in curry--reminded me of those summers. This is an authentic Japanese fami-resu. And while these flavors aren't the type to explode creativity nor wrestle for Michelin stars, this is the only restaurant in Seattle (as far as I know) that has managed to take down this nostalgic taste bud of mine. Your mileage may vary (as it did for my non-Japanese friends who simply noted "I've never had a flavor like this before" while still seeming to enjoy their first time), but rest assured the fami-resu flavor is worth trying at least once in your life whether it's here in Seattle or in Tokyo. The Summary: If food is a universal language, it is that way because food from around the world can be appreciated through its flavor and the context from which it was born. And while that could be convoluted for some, nostalgic flavors that remind you of home should not be that complicated. Fort St. George, much like the Japanese fami-resu that it embodies, manages to balance all the right notes to deliver that authentic feeling, reminding us food should not be that complicated. Love coming to this place! If you're looking for a chill, laid back, cozy place that's open pretty late in Chinatown this is the spot. The staff and service is also nice and friendly. My friends and I love coming here, we love to order the Spaghetti with Meat Sauce...BUT our all time favorite is probably the Shrimp & Baby Scallop Doria. It's time. I'm finally going to write a review. I've been coming here since late high school/college. That's about 10-12 years worth of visits! Wow time flies! I remember rushing here after almost every other college exam I took - craving the food and mustering up enough cash on a college-student budget to "splurge" on my favorite dish. The atmosphere is very low-key, sports-bar-ish, and kinda ghetto but quite welcoming and very consistent. It's always dim inside, a little sleepy, sometimes rowdy on Friday/Saturday nights. I love it all! I almost always get the meat sauce spaghetti or the chicken doria. They are both fantastic! It's really weird to say but this place serves up some of the tastiest spaghetti I have ever had. It's sweet and savory - sweet from the tomato sauce, savory from the meat/noodles. And then we walked inside and experienced the bad service, semi-dirty atmosphere and terrible food. It sounded exotic -- like a dish from a far away island -- where every dish is aflame with exotic-ness. Well, the waitress brought us a plate of dried squid -- the same exact kind I buy in stores -- the same exact kind that creeps out my friends. She then used a dirty plastic spray bottle to spray 151 on the squid jerky. Then she lit it on fire with a lighter. Very classy. Very appealing. Now don't get me wrong -- I love a good fire. I started off with a cup of miso soup that was bland but drinkable. My other option was a salad but when I saw the vegetables used to assemble it behind the bar, I was hesitant. The lettuce leaves looked wilted as if it has been sitting out there for awhile. When my food came out, I was ready to grub! The curry was decent and I liked the red pickled veggies that topped the dish. I was not very impress with the chicken katsu since it wasn't crispy. I sprinkled some parmesan since the bartender suggested that and I didn't notice a difference in taste with that. This place is so random haha. It is a little hard to find. The entrance is on 6th street between S King St and S Weller St. You need to look up above the doors to see the red and white sign that says Fort St George. Enter through the doors ans you will see the AA Travel office on the left. Go past that, up the stairs, and the restaurant will be on the left. Whew! Once you are inside it gets even more interesting. There is a nice Bar with a ton of drinks. They only had Stella on tap for beer though. The rest of the restaurant looks like an average China Town small unassuming place. Menu - I'd recommend the chicken Katsu, beef curry, with rice and scrambled egg if you are hungry. Items like omu-raisu (rice fried with ketchup and chicken then wrapped in a thin sheet of fried egg), hamburger steak (ground beef patty mixed with breadcrumbs and fried onions served au jus with steamed rice and vegetables), doria (rice and butter based dish with your choice of meat and a creamy white sauce baked in the oven with cheese), and various katsu items. There's more too... these are all that are coming to mind at this hour! I've only ever been here late night so I can't attest to their daytime service. There is usually one server and one bartender so if the place is packed, be prepared to wait. We've always had good service when we've gone for food and the food is tasty! One Yelper mentioned they were glad it wasn't nearby. I can agree with this because doria shouldn't be eaten more than once every so often and then followed up by a visit to the gym. We've done all appetizers and drinks on one visit. On another, we had proper food with our drinks. Both of the experiences were pleasant. The drinks are stiff and there's a bookshelf with manga near the kitchen if you want to do some reading. Kick back and be patient, enjoy a drink and wait for something truly tasty! Their bathrooms are located across the way at the Maekawa Bar. They've been hit and miss but more toward the end of the night for the latter. Parking is street only with a pay lot across from the restaurant. Ascend the stairs to the Fort, they are located above Pink Gorilla + the karaoke bar. read more

First off, 3 stars is not a bad score! I'm pretty particular about Japanese restaurants, mostly because I spent some time living in Japan. Therefore, my scores will not be as generous as others. Located right above Pink Gorilla and AA Travel in the I-D, and directly across from another Japanese izakaya, Maekawa, this is the better izakaya in my opinion. Fort St. George specializes in pan-western dishes; basically Japanese western fusion. Interesting spin offs such as spaghetti with tonkatsu, and doria (risotto casserole). Better than they sound! It's a decent enough sports bar with two TVs, and ideal when you want to catch a televised game. They also have an open bar you can sit at. I come here mostly for the curry dishes. I like to get their curry rice with hamburger steak; a popular dish in Japan. The hamburger steak is always juicy and tasty. The curry however, could be better. It's a bit bland, and lacking in flavor. I've tried a couple of their other items, such as the karaage and doria. All decent, and they give pretty big portions. They don't have any Japanese beers on tap, which is surprising...though they have plenty of bottled ones. If you're a fan of Chu-Hi, this place has it (though it's not on their menu). You'll just have to special order it from the waiter. They also have melon soda float, one of my favorite drinks when I was in Japan! The service is decent, as well as the prices. I guess "decent" is the keyword for this place. Nothing ever really stands out, but I occasionally like to come here for my pan-western fix. Their menu's a bit limited, and I wish they offered some more options. They have great restaurant hours compared to the other Japanese restaurants in the I-D, so I usually opt for this place when I'm out of options. However, there's better out there. We weren't sure they'd be open but they were and we had a kiddo with us so they seated us to the right in a section that was pretty isolated from the busy side. We ordered fried chicken curry and a teriyaki bento box. I loved the crispness and flavor of the chicken and the rich traditional Japanese curry flavor! The serving was also pretty big!
