The Boise coffee scene has been steadily percolating (ha!) over the last five years. It's really fantastic to see local roasters, local technique, and local sensibilities combine to create memorable and charming coffee experiences. One of my favorite experiences is Form & Function. They know their coffee and they know their identity. F&F is where I go when I want a flawless oat milk mocha. Pouring with oat milk is NOT easy. It takes a certain amount of dedication to acquire that skill. It's worth your time to appreciate the effect. I know some people (boomers) aren't too fond of the chill vibe. I (under age 90) appreciate that the staff are not in my face or fake friendly. I feel welcome to be friendly, or welcome to keep to myself. No forced socializing. This is a real comfort for people who are anxious or who plain aren't here for that McSmile nonsense. Lastly, I *am* here for the decor. There's nothing wrong with looking for the right spot to relax with your MacBook, gel with some like-minded humans and enjoy your cortado and an always great soundtrack in the speakers. Not to knock other shops in town because I have love for you all -- but this summer Form & Function is where it's at for me. read more

Yes. I give this a solid 5/5 yes for Boise. Vibe / coffee / food. It's the whole package. I got a cortado 3 days in a row. The first two were solid, complex, and delicious. Something was off with the third. As long as the baristas focus on TASTING the espresso shots they are serving and develop their own pallet for what is good vs what is mediocre this place will be a solid 5. When attention to shot weight, distribution of fines, tamping consistency, and shot extraction gets bypassed, they will drop down to a 4/5; just another hipster coffee joint serving mediocre lattes with Rosetta's on top... until then, I can say with confidence that this is THE place for espresso based drinks. Keep up the good work. Also if you are looking to slouch in a couch or comfy chair this might not be the place. Seating angles of the chairs are perfect 90 degrees !! read more

The space is amazing. Modern almost a gallery space. I couldn't get enough of it. I ordered the avocado toast and an americano. The toast ($6) was a single slice of toast and half an avo. Not great...but what's worth mentioning is this toast is the exact cliche of millennials and their "obsession" with avocado toast (and I genuinely love avocado toast). The americano was okay. I'd take it over Starbucks any day but that's not a giant feat. The espresso lacked character. Very light and watery for a 12oz americano. Sadly I'd walk a bit farther and get a much more full bodied espresso drink else where downtown or make the trip to Garden City. In short it's a place to be seen and a space to see. If you want a great cup of coffee it's worth putting a little more effort in and going somewhere else. read more

I was excited to try this coffee shop out. The inside space is beautiful and the espresso bar is clean and simple. I tried their green iced tea and it was delicious. I also tried and iced latte. Equally as good. My only 2 issues/complaints, the chairs and tables... they are horrible! I'm tall and sit tall and the tables are at an awkward height for taller people. It's a cool place to want to sit and hang out, but I couldn't last that long on the chairs. They were really uncomfortable to sit in. Also, the tables seemed to be neglected. I sat in a couple locations trying to find the most comfortable spot and every table I sat at wasn't wiped down. I may have been unlucky in my table choices, as the majority of the tables looked clean. read more

You want the best latte in town? Then this is the place for you! I come here every weekend to study for a reason. The vibe, coffee, and people make Form and Function quite the coffee shop. The two different floors really set it apart from other coffee shops I have been to, but the coffee is the real kicker. I've been to Form & Function several times because I like the location and the... well, mostly the location. The Good: The shop is next to some great beer and good pizza on either side. The interior has a clean, modern design, which I like. There are a few tables outside to sit and have your coffee when the weather is nice. There's little traffic on the street, which makes sitting outside pleasant. Most of the downtown coffee shops are on busy streets, so it's nice to be able to sit somewhere quiet. The Not So Good: First, the coffee. I love a good cappuccino. I can't find one here. I've tried them wet, dry, halfway between wet and dry, and with different kinds of coffee. All of them were bad, often tasting like burnt tires. Finally coming to terms that these folks can't put together a good cappuccino, today I gave up and ordered a drip coffee. It was a little better than the coffee at the last Hampton Inn I stayed at, but not much. Next, the service. If the service was great, I might look past the lousy coffee. Unfortunately, the best scenario I've found is that the staff is cool toward you and the coffee is slow. Don't be surprised if it takes 10 minutes or more to get your order. FOUR POINT FIVE STARS. Form & Function seems to fit the new(ish) mold for 3rd-wave coffee shops about as well as any I've patronized around the country. In other words - they are nailing the hipster (sorry) / minimalist esthetic. The espresso I had today was my version of perfect: on the lighter (roast) side, well balanced, and slightly sweet. The environment was a tad stark for my taste (1/2 star) - but seems to fit in well with the neighborhood. The service was swift, and the overall experience was very pleasant. This place should help raise the bar in the local coffee scene and deserves to be very busy (IMO). read more

Moving here from Sacramento, I was super excited to try Form & Function. I had been following their journey through Instagram since they started building. My first impression of this place was how overwhelmingly beautiful the space is! I had ordered a hot vanilla latte, but discovered they don't have almond or soy milk. That's why I took the 1 star off :( I stopped drinking whole milk a long time ago..The guy suggested that I give the cashew milk a try to supplement and I wasn't a fan. Next time, I think I will try it cold and see if it gives it a different feel. I posted these pictures on my IG story, and people were flipping out. Solid coffee shop in downtown Boise. Plenty of space to hang out or work. Gluten-free and vegan options. My avocado toast was excellent.

New hipster hangout in Boise. Cool vibe. Tasty - but spendy - coffee. Limited small plate / snack menu - but that's OK - all the food looked great, although I didn't eat. Loud - difficult to hear even the person next to you! Great addition to the Broad Street Neighborhood. 3 stars only because it was loud, and parking nearby is limited. read more

My friends and I visited Form and Function on Sunday, February 3 around noon. If I could give this coffee shop zero stars, I would. To start off, the service was awful. We were not welcomed into the shop, the workers were short and rude. My friend accidentally exploded her coffee because the cups are so flimsy and cheap, and the barista just tossed her a wet rag to clean it up herself with no help. In addition, the coffee was extremely overpriced and in all honesty wasn't very tasty. You could go to Dutch Bros and get a 24oz coffee for the same price as the 12oz coffee that was mainly ice. If you like the aesthetic of a coffee shop more than the actual coffee then this is the place for you. As a small business, their goal is simplicity, but simplicity should be done well. read more

Such a cute lil spot! My cappuccino was perfectly made and the decor was so perfect for the atmosphere. The baristas aren't snooty like most small coffee shops tend to have. There is plenty of seating, delicious looking desserts and small breakfast plates. Free parking is a little difficult to find but overall, I highly recommend them and I can't wait to go back again. read more

Coffee here is good but any latte is great if it comes with full milk so not a fair comparison for my other skim milk coffee drinks. Choices on milk are inadequate for my needs. Anyway, it's not just that though. Business hours don't work for me. All these new fancy coffee shops that shut down at 5 pm seem to be only interested in specific sort of customers. I need coffee on my way home from work, and so, 5 pm closing time is a problem. Parking is a problem. But the reason behind the 3 star rating isn't any of those things... [You ask: come on, what IS it then? Well, it is...] cuz they have been using my email address which they got hold off thanks to Square to email me special offers. Cute emails: We miss you... Come back. How sweet. Thing is being sweet in mass emails is easy (it's just code) but when I do go and in the rare occasion that they are actually open for business by the time I arrive, I'm lucky if I get a hello. Talk about cold, indifferent service. So here's the calculus .. pay nearly 5 dollars for a latte with full milk or some nut juice that passes for 'milk' or else nothing + may be get one or may be not depending on whether one is employed & can't spend afternoons in coffee shops + not even a smile = nah, I'm good. I love from and function coffee!! I have been a fan since finding them at the market. They recently moved into a super hit building downtown; a really urban chic place. I love the interior of this space including their loft area. A definite must place for premium coffee or a place to study/get some work done. When it comes to coffee very few places in town offer premium coffee; coffee that is roasted in house then handcrafted to your cup. Right now their coffee roasting is done on California then shipped to Boise. I was little disappointed to find this out since they have always advertised they roast locally which isn't true. Sometime in the spring they will begin utilize their state of the art roasting system. They currently do not offer a drive through and parking is a headache till they get the parking garage opened. I typically get a mocha; I find the coffee to go cups to be a bit small especially considering the price point. That being said this a premium coffee spot that is all about the craft of coffee which comes with an expected higher price point. I love the baristas here the flavor is always consistent and their coffee knowledge is top notch. The owner is super friendly used to run the district coffee shop and knows coffee/coffee process. Coffee is a craft like beer using that analogy you can either get the corporate guy or get one that utilizes the methods to make a premium product utilizing superior methods-if that's you then this is the place!! Experience premium coffee and service all in a modern chic environment I'd say this is the hot new coffee shop in boise a must try for a coffee lover!! read more

I gave Form & Function 3 stars because the coffee is good -- but, in my opinion, not worth the high price tag! Smaller cup of coffee and more expensive than any other coffee shop in Downtown Boise. But, if you are looking for a place to plug in your laptop (or your glue gun, as one patron was doing the day I visited), this is the place for you! I'll stick with Dawson Taylor :-) read more

Do NOT buy whole espresso beans here- around $15 for 12 oz, you can travel less than a mile to D&T on Lusk and get 16 oz for $12, and D&T beans are fresher, (just by a day or two). D&T beans were marginally better in an espresso drink, and a lot cheaper. The lattes here are better than most, but definitely not worth the extra money, (Slow by Slow is just as expensive but appreciably superior). Seats are uncomfortable as hell, but I assume that is to keep law students from camping there. While we are here, F&F should include "Coffee" in the name of the business, dumb not to. read more
