Found myself in Boulder at lunchtime and was feeling like a salad. Hitch was, I had my decidedly non-salad-friendly family with me so I couldn't pick anything toooo crunchy. No fear, Flower Child was here. The aesthetic is all the charm of a mother-earth cafe with the polish (and budget) of a restaurant empire. Cool murals meets marble cafe tables. Perfect execution, no notes. The counter service was good - totally unremarkable. The food ended up being a big hit with my whole family. I got some sort of fall salad with chicken, roasted squash, and some kind of grain over a prickly lettuce. Exactly what I was looking for. The real stars of the meal were the sweet potato fries (with a killer Greek yogurt green goddess dip) and the Brussels Sprouts that came with my other family members meals. Super, super yum. Lemme get the food part of this review handled quickly up front because the second part of this review (about the big business of modern American health food restaurants) is fascinating to me and hopefully to you too. Flower Child is a Boulder-esque looking version of True Foods in a fast casual setting. The food is absolutely excellent. Had one of their most popular dishes today: The Mother Earth Bowl. A truly delicious beautifully presented serving of ancient grains, sweet potatoes topped with a red pepper vinaigrette sauce, sautéed portobellos, charred onions, arugula and a dab of pesto. Just fantastic, and that's true whether or not you're a veg-head (and I'm not). All for under $10. Really a treat and really something you'll love. You'll find the ambience totally hip. Large open space, exposed ducting. Simple functional and comfortable seating. Lots of glass and light and high ceilings. High energy. A bit loud but not overwhelming and lots of happy looking millennials hangin' on both sides of the counter as workers and customers. That said here's what so interesting. This is not a one-off family-owned local business. This is a member of a chain of now 27 Flower Child restaurants developed by Sam Fox who's one of the most successful individual restaurant developers / owners in the universe. (Recently another Flower Child was opened in the Cherry Creek Mall in Denver where the old Safeway used to be). I ran into my first SF restaurant 3+ years ago in Phoenix around where he first got into the restaurant business as a college dropout many years ago. The place was called The Henry and it was a well-known and loved 5 star place along the lines of one of my favorite restaurants in the country, the Manhattan Beach Post in Manhattan Beach, CA. (I've written about both of those places if you're interested in what you'll be getting into with a visit to an SF restaurant). Fox has developed several chains of "concept" restaurants along the lines of what he's done with the Flower Child brand all over the country and in July 2019 he sold what was then a portfolio of over a 100 operations to The Cheesecake Factory restaurant group for over $350 million(!). (SF's sale also included his North Italia restaurant group. I think the guy's an American restaurant super nova and it seems to me that he deserves all of the immense wealth that he's worked so hard to accumulate over these many years in the business. Flower Child is a great place to eat lunch. They have a healthy but very tasty menu and have plenty of gluten free options for my family. I had the meat balls and the wife had the salmon glow bowl. Both of the entrees were on point and very tasty. The service was also very good. They overcooked the first salmon and we shared that with our hostess and she immediately brought an other salmon which was cooked perfectly. We had their gluten free mac and cheese on the side and it was absolutely delicious. Very cream and cheesy and the gluten free pasta had a nice texture unlike many of the gluten free pastas I have tried in restaurants that tend to the mushy side. Absolutely love this place. You can taste the quality in the food! Saw this place while shopping at home goods next door and wasn't sure what it was but was drawn to it bc of the ascetic! So cute! Saw the menu and knew I had to try it. Everything was so fresh and made fast. I loveeee poke so wasn't sure I was going to feel about vegan poke but the ingredients sounded so good I couldn't pass it up. And I'm glad I didn't! Delicious flavors! The beets were the star! Also got the watermelon and tomato salad. Good but small. But when you think about it perfect size as a side. My boyfriend got the rebel which was a steak wrap. I had a bite and it was very good! He really liked it and wants to go back to try more things. One suggestion: for guests that only get water they should think about getting reusable cups. read more

Wow, this was by far my favorite meal I had while visiting Boulder. The menu set up of this place is completely different than anywhere I have ever visited. They have an option to order one dish, or you can order off of the menu of smaller items and combine the smaller items to make one bigger dish. It is difficult to explain and will make more sense when you look at the menu. It is an order at the counter type of place. They give you a number to place on your table and the servers will bring the food to your table when it is ready. The interior of this place is just beautiful. They have a beautiful outdoor covered patio section as well attached to the main restaurant. There were little bouquets of flowers on the tables, interesting artwork, cool drinks, etc. It's the small touches that make this place so great. The food came out pretty quickly and OOOH I was impressed. The presentation of everything was lovely. I ordered the spicy coconut curry with tofu and it was one of the tastiest dishes I have ever eaten. I wish there was a Flower Child near me so I could eat here every day of the week. read more

They've raised their prices quite a bit. That 3-side vegetarian plate I used to pay under $10 for when they first opened a year ago is now starting at $12.95 without a protein. On top of that, the incredible gluten-free mac and cheese I was raving about is now scooped smaller than any other side dish I've received (has happened twice, so it seems this is a new thing.) I come here FOR the Mac, so this breaks my heart. Luckily the flavors are still balanced and thoughtful, and there's still an abundance of healthy options, but the new increased prices and slightly smaller portions is enough of a change to make me opt for another restaurant that actually has wait staff. If you were to order a bowl or a dish that has a protein, you'd basically be paying fine dining lunch prices at this point. Also, good luck finding a seat at lunchtime. What madness! read more

They must really care about their fast causal service because our dinner was running late and two waitresses came out to apologize. It did feel a little long but I assumed it was my hanger kicking in. I'm not sure if it was the owner but she brought out our food and profusely apologized for it being late and comped our whole meal! We were so shocked and kept telling her it wasn't necessary but she insisted. So five stars alone on the service! It's definitely appreciated by customers. There were a couple of empty tables scattered and the patio looked very inviting but the heat was killing us, so we decided to sit inside. For lunch, I ordered the Mother Earth bowl and asked if I could substitute the avocado for anything else, which they were more than happy to do! I added broccoli but you could be creative and maybe add greek yogurt? Anyway, I also added salmon to complete the dish. Enjoyed it, loved it, and definitely not guilty of eating outside for lunch. Think I'm going to talking about this place for a while and making it a more frequent part of my diet. Flower Child serves up such tasty, fresh cuisine that doesn't break the bank. I got the "plate" including salmon, sweet potatoes, and green beans. The sweet potatoes had a bit of flare with the chili sauce which went perfectly with the grilled salmon to balance the heat out. It felt like a full sit down meal in a more fast paced restaurant. The only downside of Flower Child is that my current place of residence won't allow for me to dine here more often because the combination of ambiance, service and quality products make for a value of the highest level and would motivate any Yelper to work their way up the chart and vie for Duke or Duchess in a matter of weeks. The Flower Child is a purported to be a healthy and delicious eatery. I would confirm that the food is good, however, I think it is pricey for what you get, and there are no smoothies. HOWEVER, it is not a place to go if you have any kind of disability and need a restaurant which has reasonable accessibility. I use a walker and can get around quite well, but I had serious difficulty at the Flower Child. I had to stand in line to order off a menu posted on the wall. The young lady at the counter handed me an empty plastic glass for me to fill - and carry to my table - pushing my walker... The tables are very close together, so it was difficult to maneuver to your seat or to the Ladies Room. Actually, it was a whole production when I had to go to the lady's room. We wanted to eat out in their patio. I had to push a heavy door to get to my table with my lemonade. If I needed anything, like a cup of coffee, I had to get up, maneuver past closely packed tables, push the door open and go inside, stand in line, go get the coffee, and return to the patio with coffee, walker, heavy door, and packed tables. No one offered to help. The food is good. But, my avocado toast was smothered with cheese and I am dairy free. The last time I had gotten it, it had no cheese. So, I sent it back for them to scrape off the cheese and had to wait about 15 minutes for someone to bring me my avocado toast without cheese. I live in NY and had heard about this place so was so excited they had a location a short walk from my hotel in Cherry Creek. I visited 3 times and everything was so delicious. The avocado toast and the Thai Dye wrap (they bake their own wraps every day or sooner if they run out, never had a stale one) are my fave cold plates and for the three side plate, I love the glazed Brussels, the sweet potatoes, the Mac and cheese, the fruit cup, they all assort well and my husband likes some of the others I've never tried yet.
