What a welcome change from the cramped restaurants on Thayer! The first thing you notice when you walk into Flatbread Co. is the enormity of the place. The decor is very rustic and woodsy--it feels like walking into a spacious hipster ski lodge. Seats are well-spaced out so you can have a conversation without contracting laryngitis from having to yell to be heard. Food is solid, as well. I normally go for the veggie special and I've never been disappointed! Special shoutout to the brownie, it's DELICIOUS, as is the ice cream it comes with. There's also a very big bar, looks like a great place to hang out on a weekday and grab a drink with friends. Tip: This place has gluten-free crusts if you're going with GF friends or are GF yourself! Tip 2: They don't take reservations, but if you call ahead when you're leaving they can put you on a list, which reduces your wait time. read more

I was in Portsmouth, NH visiting friends this past December and when we were trying to decide where to eat, one of them suggested the Flatbread Company there and said "it's a chain but it's seriously really, really good." We chose something else due to the long wait there and then, miraculously, a Flatbread opened in Providence only a short time later and it was time to try it for myself. I went as soon as I possibly could and haven't been disappointed in any of my experiences there since. I had the opportunity to sit at the bar on my first visit and the bartender that evening gave me a background on all things Flatbread Company. The wooden floors came from an old mill building in Providence, tables and chairs from a high school gymnasium, the wood fired clay ovens were built in the restaurant since they weigh 4,000 lbs each, they only use the ovens along with a cauldron for their sauces meaning no microwaves or heat lamps here, and they try to source as much local, organic ingredients/beer and liquor as possible. Fun fact: you'll notice that this building that lay dormant for years was once an auto garage and they kept the bay windows and well as signage intact in the front of the restaurant. On to the main, main attraction: the pizza. It's fantastic. Flatbread offers daily specials (one meat and one veggie which is sometimes vegan) and have really great specialty pizza options on their every day menu (and will even do a pizza half of one specialty option, half another). The crust is doughy but crisp and whether you get a white pizza or opt for the red sauce they are equally delicious. The best specialty pizza I've had is the Mopsy's Kalua Pork Pie and that's coming from someone who tends to be vegetarian more often than not. It's the perfect combination of a salty chipotle BBQ sauce and sweet toppings. Organic, local, vegan options, craft beer and cocktails. As of right now, my favorite place to eat in Providence. It's located right off Thayer, but still has its own parking, which is awesome. The restaurant itself is huge, with plenty of room for big groups. The staff is so nice and knowledgeable about their products. We spoke to three different people, and each of them got down on our level to talk to us and answered all of our questions with the best possible attitudes. I loved the whole vibe of the place, from being able to watch the chefs prepare our food in the massive ovens to the renovated building. The food was amazing as well. I had the pizza with pulled pork and seasonal fiddleheads. The server recommended a really great craft beer and even gave it to me in a half pint glass, something that I haven't been able to get at too many restaurants. I will definitely be going back to this restaurant, especially when I have a crowd. read more

The pizza here is fresh and delicious and made with local and organic ingredients. The menu is limited to salads, flatbreads and dessert, which isn't a problem unless you are craving a sandwich. All of the items on the menu are however totally customizable, with extra dressing and sauces available at no extra charge! It is a very modern and hip atmosphere with an open kitchen where you can watch your pizza come out of the oven. We tried their seasonal roasted butternut squash with goat cheese and cranberries and it was amazing!! We also tried the hamburger pizza with ketchup and mustard and onions which was equally as delicious. My personal favorite is the mashed potato pizza. WOW. so good. Flatbread can get very busy but the restaurant does a nice job of getting people in and out in a reasonable time frame. My one complaint about the setup is the lack of buzzers/ pagers for people who are waiting. We went on a busy Saturday night and gave our name and were told 30 minute wait. We waited, and waited, and after 40 minutes asked someone at the desk how much longer and for some reason they didn't have our name on the list anymore. The use of pagers could solve future organizational issues similar to this during busy hours. All in all, you've gotta check it out. Tatiane said it best "Such a hipster spot!" That phrase essentially highlights Flatbread and its ambience. It definitely appeals to that group of youngsters in the area. So many people had been talking about Flatbread and I just never made it to them until just before I leave Providence. I decided to give it a try since it came so highly rated. The first time we tried to go there, we went around 7/8pm on a Friday night and it was packed. The wait was going to be about 40 min whether we ate in or ordered out. We decided that we would then order out on our next attempt. Thank you Grubhub because of you we finally got to try out Flatbreads! Like all the recommendations here we decided to go with the kailua pork pizza and a few others that we designed ourselves. Definitely a solid pizza here with a thinish crust and fresh ingredients! I wasn't disappointed by any means but wasn't as blown away as some other people were. One of the best Flatbread locations I have been too! It may not be on the water or have a bowling alley BUT the people make up for it and the space is nice as is. Came here on a trip to Providence and I kind of defaulted from trying a new place as I knew I would be satisfied with their pizza... But this location proved me wrong. My meal ended up being things I had never before tried on the flatbreads menu and it was OUTSTANDING. The waiter was awesome he had great suggestions and even brought us out a pitcher of water since we opted to sit outside on the sun drenched pavement. We got split pizza with half sausage and half Mopsy's Kalua Pie with chicken oh my god, I am drooling thinking about it. Went here again after a stellar Yelp party. The pizza is so good! I had the pizza with the pulled pork on it, as well as the mexican style pizza. Both of them were out of this world. The crust is very tasty. The beers were half way decent. I went with Allagash white for its ability to go with everything. We sat outside on a 70 degree day and it was very nice. The sun was warm and the drinks and pizza made everything calm and enjoyable. The waitress took very good care of us, very attentive and organized. The parking spaces are really thin. The hostess literally does not understand what vegan is. We ordered a vegan mopsy over the phone and she asked if we wanted pork or chicken. We explained no meat and to substitute for vegan cheese. She rang up a gluten free pizza. We then explained vegan does not mean gluten free. When we picked up the pizza it had pork and regular cheese on it. So disappointing. read more

I've come to Flatbread Co. many times with both small (2 people) and large (30 people) groups, and I've been happy with all aspects of the experiences: service is friendly and efficient, the space is big and airy, and the food is solid. I have ordered nearly every flatbread on the menu. Personally, I find the non-veg options more satisfying, but the vegetarian options are pretty good (just missing some of the savory flavor of the meat toppings). Their signature salad is nice, especially with the local cheese, but not a must order. I would also suggest skipping the desserts as they are a little dry. Stick to the flatbreads here; it's what they do best, obviously. The crusts are thin and nicely charred, and they are generally substantial enough to hold on to the sauce and toppings. They use Muir Glen tomatoes, and this choice earns them a lot of respect from me. That, and the fact that they're chopping their own wood and making good use of that giant oven, really show the care that goes into the food. I'm sure many of you have experienced the disappointment of grabbing ahold of a thin crust slice of pizza, raising it to your hungry mouth, and watching all the sauce and toppings slide right off the slice on to your plate - or worse, your lap. Fortunately, that rarely happens to me here but I do prefer eating the flatbread with a knife and fork if it's an especially topping-heavy slice. I really like the sausage-topped one, and what I would recommend is ordering one of the specials -- they are usually creative and delicious. If Antonio's is too heavy for you, Flatbread Co is the way to go. Two flatbreads can easily feed three people for lunch, and there's a solid drinks menu, too. I really like the space in the back with couches and books -- it's unexpected and homey, and provides a nice little hangout nook. read more

The atmosphere is what sets this pizza joint above the others, in combination with their variety of interesting pizzas, and consciousness of health. You might consider the decor to be a bit hipster which I found pleasant. The employees did not have matching uniforms, and the menu consisted of local, organic fair. We were with many people so were able to try many things off the menu which was nice. We all started with the organic salad with goat cheese YUM! For pizzas, we tried the pork pie which was delish! Pulled pork, pineapple, onions, and goat cheese! The best pizza at the table though was the homemade maple-fennel sausage pizza with mushrooms and Carmelized onions. I will definitely be back for that one! Unfortunately service was lacking a bit. Our salads came before the cocktails and did not show up until we reminded the waitress that they had been ordered. This will not be the most accurate or fair of reviews - since I showed up late and most of the pizza was gone. However, all indications are this is a first rate thin crust pizza house. Even long after the pizza had left the oven - the flavors were strong and distinctive. Each of the pizza types had had strong interesting individual personalities. Of special note - was a kale pizza. Kale in pizzas is generally a way you punish small children. This kale pizza was a sensual delight. I suspect if I came here fresh and ordered my own pizzas off the menu - this would be a real five star establishment. read more

Very kid friendly. My son was looking forward to returning after our first trip. He remembered our server giving him dough to play with & coloring too. On our last trip our waitress even took him over to the oven to see our pizza being made. I'd definitely recommend it for families. And the have a pretty good tap list! Lots of local beers: Bucket, Foolproof & Revival to name a few. All the ingredients are locally sourced even though they're s (small) chain restaurant. The only reason I'm not leaving 5 stars is because of the tricky parking situation off of Thayer. Plus I haven't been blown away by their pizza but really like it! I'm upgrading my review for three reasons - I found a flavor combination that I loved, superior service for a freaking toddler, and I fully explored the full restaurant and admire the variations in ambience in different spaces. I went by my own rule finally and tried the basic - a cheese pizza with roasted red peppers. This was my winner here- uncluttered and savory. They offer kiddos pizza dough to play with as well as crayons and paper. In addition I really enjoy how there are 2-3 different ambience area in the restaurant. TLDR: Poor host staff, they double charged us, but the food and atmosphere are both awesome! Maybe would be better on a weekday. We arrive (a party of 3) on a Friday evening around 7pm. It's pretty cool they offer free valet, but also pretty random the valet decided they needed to repark our parked car... in the same exact spot. Nevertheless, a nice complementary thing to have. We approach the host stand, making our way through the maze of people congregated in the entire hallway leading up to the host. We ask how long the wait would be, the hostess says 20-25 minutes. We are shocked because this place is packed, but it's a pleasant surprise. Until it wasn't. 25 minutes became 30, which became 35. At the 35 minute mark I inquire how much longer, and the host looks at me like I've just asked her to donate her liver to me. She says "well, there's still 4 parties ahead of you. People are sitting longer than we expected." No, you're just not great at your job I guess. How does 20 minutes turn into 45 "because people were sitting longer than expected". Also, how do you not communicate that to anyone waiting. Parties that were waiting when we got there were still waiting when we were eventually seated. Honestly, the moment she said 20 minutes we should've known it was too good to be true. The wait wasn't the problem, especially on a Friday night in this area. The issue was that the host severely under compensated and really didn't care after the fact. Nevertheless, we were seated. Our server, John, immediately approaches us. He is very friendly and attentive. We order 3 pizzas and 1 to go, they had odd names that I can't remember but we ordered a basic cheese, one that had goat cheese and olives etc., and a sausage and mushroom. They were all really really really good! The runners didn't seem to know what they were doing though, they literally tried to hand one of the people in our party the hot pizza- like what? The other member of our party was irked by the fact our server kept moving his beverage around on the table, a pretty random thing to be doing. Despite the ludicrous first portion of the evening, the dining part was great. Even though this is a chain, the restaurant itself has a very "hipster" feel. It's cool you can see the wood burning ovens, and watch them stretch the dough etc. the bar was nice as well. This place is quite loud, which is not the desired atmosphere for some, but was fine for us. After we've finished, we go to pay the check with a card. John (server) comes back and says "I'm really sorry but I accidentally charged your card to that tables bill, but don't worry it'll just say processing for a day. It happens all the time." WTF? Why does this happen all the time, John- you just regularly swipe the wrong card for the wrong tab? That's really not a great thing to admit to. Both the tabs were around $50, so now we've just paid $100 at this restaurant for no reason, and John definitely doesn't care. Overall, the food was quite good and definitely unique to other things in the area. However, their staff just cannot own up to any of their mistakes. The host staff was terrible, and John was great up until the point he just assumed it was fine that he just charged us $100 for no reason. If I were to return, it would likely be on a weekday, because this establishment can not handle the weekend crowds properly. read more

Very good, but a few observations. It's a large, loud place--if that's ok with you, great. For me, music that's too loud doesn't cut it. Not to sound paranoid, but I felt I was seated in the "family" area; closer to the outside seating vs the interior where the younger folks seemed to be. I'm a family guy too. But it's a large pub-like atmosphere with a bar, I don't necessarily want to be automatically seated in the high-chair area just because I look like a family guy. The pizza is very nicely done, but it's quite expensive, and the portion size isn't justifiable for the price, especially because the toppings are quite sparingly applied. They had a special that night that I only saw mentioned on a chalk board as I was leaving, it would have been nice to have been clued in as it seemed more interesting than what was on the menu. Don't get me wrong--they know how to make excellent pizza here, just order carefully and be prepared to whimper when you are chewing their delicious crust that you wished had a bit more sauce or something else on it. read more

Fantastic vegan pizza here! Make sure to add cheese (Daiya brand) to your order because the vegan pizza does not come with it. The service is friendly and fast even at the busiest times. Great spot for families- there are even milk crates in the bathroom for pint sized patrons who need assistance reaching the sink. I'm not sure if they do this every night but I went on a Saturday and they had free (with tip) valet parking for their small lot. read more

Pretty good pizza, just missing that 20 feet to put it over the fence. We had 1/2 1/2 (2 different flavors) split on our pie, Providence Community on one side, and the P. E. on the other side. A Good flavor, but missing a little edge, we asked for garlic powder, after some wait we got some, this pizza needed the jolt of garlic, it was a good addition, the red pepper flakes were tasteless and not spicy (be nice to have red pepper flakes with a kick and taste, after the additional graded cheese shake, I felt it needed a little something else, which was the drizzle of olive oil. (Good olive oil) Definitely it was complete now (except a little need for spiciness) but quite good, A recommended Pizza, we will be back! (side note) is Buffalo Mozzarella was not on the available), would be a nice addition. Spicy hot pepper olive oil might be a solution and Granulated garlic is also a little stronger than the powdered garlic, chopped garlic would be sublime. read more

I'll forgive Flatbread for this one time putting a sign up on the door saying they were closing extra early at 9 p.m. as I was walking in the door...at 9 p.m. I conventionally like to make reservations, but didn't on this occasion. A table for 2 was about a 30 minute wait on a Friday night at 7:30 ish. That was fine and expected, as Liz and I just walked around Thayer street while we waited. My friend said she went in the best date ever here. I have to agree it's a cozy casual place that's not too loud and not too bright. I would veer toward it being more of a college date restaurant, not "adult" date restaurant; as it is not as intimate as one could be looking for. Regardless, it has wooden themed decor and furniture with two eye catching stone ovens. The chefs make the pizzas right in front of the dining room, and there is basically no separation between the kitchen and the diners other than the stations they use to roll out the dough. Liz is a big bbq chicken fan, so we split a large 1/2 moxie pork pie (basically a bbq pork pizza with chicken substituted for pork) and 1/2 cheese and herb. I was much more interested in my company than focusing on the food. When the flatbread arrived, I was a bit surprised to find out that the cheese and herb did not come with red sauce. That was completely okay and that half of the pizza tasted like some good cheesy breadsticks. The real kicker was the moxie pie (bbq chicken) side had pineapple. I repeat, pineapple on pizza. Take this lesson and never make the same mistake I did by not reading the menu descriptions. The service was very friendly (and young). Our waitress was pretty attentive and kept our water glasses full. Clientele in the restaurant ranged from a few families to college kids to some younger couples This place is great if you're a cheap f*** like me. Their menu has no app offerings except a few measly salad options. No table bread even though I feel like they could whip up some Bertuccis type rolls in their stone ovens. Liz felt bad that we barely spent anything, $13 including tax and tip. But I didn't mind, it meant I could spend a few dollars on dessert on Thayer. read more
