Ok so I finally decided to join the modern world of overpriced burgers and headed to five guys for lunch last week. I feel like I was vindicated for not having been for so long. It was a decently tasting burger... IMHO a tad better than the places like red robin or fuddruckers about the same as an in n out as well. However the price point seemed very high compared to its equivalent of in n out but about the same as fatburger. It just seems to me that for a burger and fries that $10 is a bit too high. I would much rather just go for the burger, since seriously I don't need the extra carbs... but its still pretty loaded and tasty... Pro Tip: They do their fries the English way and thus they have chips with malted vinegar. Overall my burger was tasty. I really liked the foil as you get the cheese off of it easily and quickly and didn't have to throw it away. The beef was also juicy and it was testable as you ate the cheese droppings or lettuce droppings. Overall it was what I wanted in a quickie burger... except for the price point and lack of a combo option... Good GD burger. I agree with others that In n Out and FG's are just such different animals that one cannot fairly compare the two. There is definitely room for both here in SoCal. I can see craving one or the other depending on my mood at any given time. These are more like you'd make at home, with the hand formed imperfect shape, and crispy outer. Greasier, thus juicer than other fast food burgers, maybe due to beef with a higher fat percentage? I am not even partial to hot dogs and this was very tasty on a good quality bun. They could make a separate successful concept around this dog. I can just not warm up to Five Guys. The fries are super salty and getting a huge bag of them hardly makes up for how lackluster the burger is. Tiny compared to the bun and just super greasy. Not the best quality meat and the toppings are out of a can. The bacon soggy and a joke at two half slices, not worth adding. The Good: These are compact, clean, tasty little burgers. Everything was well organized, the regular sized burgers come with 2 beef patties, lots of topping selections. Grilled mushrooms and onions are always a plus in my book. Burgers weren't watery or runny, mine did not fall apart while I was eating. Regular fries were pretty good if not a little soft. Free peanuts to snack on or compliment your meal with. The Bad: Even though I asked for EVERYTHING, I didn't taste the mushrooms. I didn't see any either. No REAL flavor aside from the presence of the mayo, ketchup, and mustard. The Ugly: I prefer In-N-Out. I don't think it's worth the $4-5 dollars for a regular hamburger without any fries. The Verdict: Everyone says this is the rival to In-N-Out, but it's like watching a Roger Federer against Andy Roddick match. As much as I love Andy Roddick, Federer (In-N-Out) takes a fat dump all over this place. Definitely check it out if you are interested and I really like all the topping choices. As a die-hard In-n-Out aficionado, the second I heard that the Zagat guide rated this place higher- I knew I had to check it out. My pal insists that not only is 5 Guys, but Fatburger as well are both better than In-n-Out, I tell him he is crazy- so we make the trip to Orange to try out 5 Guys. My first impression is, well, it looks like a poor excuse for a knock-off In-n-Out. The red and while color palette, exposed kitchen, shiny tile- its all too familiar. What they do have that is different is all of their stock out on the floor. I ate next to a pile of bagged potatoes- charming? I think not. They also have reviews plastered all over their walls in a desperate attempt to say very loudly, "see! we are good too!" They also offer free peanuts. Huh? Scared your sub-par burgers wont fill everyone up? Interesting. We approached the counter after a short wait and ordered. I was disappointed that they would not cook it medium rare like In-n-Out does. In fact it states right on their menu that they cook every burger "well done". Hmm...I think letting the customer choose is a better option being that I dont like my meat burnt to a crisp. I got a bacon cheeseburger with only ketchup. My pal got everything plus BBQ sauce. His burger was the same price as mine. See, its a flat cost whether you get 15 toppings or 2. Unacceptable in my book. We got 2 burgers, 2 drinks and one order of fries and it put us at 16.59. Way more expensive than In-n-Out. Once our food arrived I was a little shocked by my burgers appearance. I mean look at not only my photo, but everyone else's photos! These burgers are so sloppy. Mine was almost smashed. The bun was like the kind I buy at the grocery store for a back yard cookout, did not look fresh and homemade. The burger itself was decent. They give you a lot of the fries, but too much of a bad thing is never good. For 2 people to eat a burger, fries, and drink is over $20. Quality NOT worth its insane price. They are rude and conceited when it comes to service. The girl that called my order placed my bag on the counter, and I asked where the straws were and she just stared at me, looked down at my bag, and shoved it towards me in a swoop. A burger you can sink your teeth into! To start, I have to say that you should not try to compare In-n-Out Burgers to Five Guys. They are two very different styles and prices. So for those of you looking for a compare and contrast article, I apologize. Five Guys Burgers remind me of the type of burger we try to recreate in our backyard BBQs. The burger is prepared well done and yet it remains juicy. The toppings are a cornucopia of condiments guaranteed to offer the masses enough variations to suit any palate. The meat to bun to topping ratio is perfect. A single patty is sufficient, but the double will put you into carnivore nirvana (or a meat induced coma). The fries are very good. They are fresh cut and flavorful. I could stand them a little crispier, but they are still better than most other fries out there. The wait runs from 20 to 30 minutes (from the time you start standing, order and receive the goods). Is it worth the wait? YES! The price point is what you would find and independent burger stands. Singles run about $4.00, Doubles around $5.00 and Fries about $3.00. Toss in a soda for $2.00 and you will end up spending around $10.00. I have to point out that the "small" fries order will easily feed two or three diners. So with all this love, why don't I give them 5 stars? The only issue I had was with the fries. I like them a lot, I just don't love'em. If I could give them 4.5 stars, I would. So for those of you wanting a comparison, let me say that at this same price point and quality, this burger matches up well with the burgers at Whole Foods Smokehouse Grill. Their burger combo is a great and offers a wide variety of toppings. The price point is about the same and it is made to order. Brave the line and try one your self. Maybe it was an off night for them, but we didn't have a great experience. We got 2 cheeseburgers made "all the way" but w/o mayo, a hot dog (they ran out of hot dog buns -- not a deal breaker though), an order of large fries, and a drink. For $21 and the hype, it didn't pan out. The buns for the cheeseburgers were soggy. It felt almost like we were chewing raw dough. I ended eating mine "protein style." Maybe if they were toasted, they may have held up better w/ the condiments. The fries were really soggy, limp, and really oily. Finally. Orange has an In N Out, they have a Habit, and now they finally have a Five Guys! Five Guys makes an amazing burger. Five Guys has a unique flavor and you know when you take a bite, you're eating a Five Guys burger. I've been craving Five Guys for awhile and was ridiculously excited to see one opening only a few miles away from my place. The burgers are outstanding! The flavor is unique and really can't be compared to anything. One of the biggest pluses to the burger is the patty size- I really don't like thin patty syndrome from any place and Five Guys certainly does not suffer from that problem. The fries are unique too- a bit on the softer side, but I'm more about the flavor than texture with fries, and they easily pass that test. The optional Cajun spices really add an extra element to the meal. And the shelled peanuts are a great touch while waiting in the longer lines. The staff is very friendly. The lines are long and the staff handles the crowds and chaos extremely well. When you have a line out the door, down the block, no standing room inside, and the staff still is all smiles and friendly, that's when you know something's working. Those comparing Five Guys to other burger chains and fabricating some rivalry are just stupid. Five Guys in Orange gives the area three amazing burger chains within only a few miles of each other- how can more kick ass burger joints be a bad thing?? If only Orange had a Smashburger then I could retire here. I came here with high expectations based on a few other Five Guys I've visited and it certainly did not disappoint. I did not need 2 patties! They need to put that in big bold letters on the menu. So I kept my burger simple, I don't like going to all these up and coming hype burger places and order all this unnecessary shit unless its Soul burger ( review soon to follow) So I just did the mustard ,mayo,lettuce , tomato and ketchup. Like Arnold said , those patties need some serious seasoning! The patties also can use less time on the grill, I like my shit medium rare and of course with fast food joints you can't dictate how you want your meat cooked unfortunately. When the burgers came out like 5 minutes later, I unwrapped it and noticed the entire contents of my burger were cold. - The cheese was cold, the onions were not grilled, the patty was dry and cold as if it had been cooked earlier in the evening and just tossed into my burger an hour or two later. - Also, not one of the burgers had bbq sauce on it. - The fries came out and were unseasoned so we had to ask for Cajun seasoning on the side which was not good simply sprinkled on top. I still ate the entire burger because I was hungry. It was fine. I dealt with it. Same with my boyfriend. Tasted somewhat like a burger you would put together at a backyard bbq - contents weren't fresh but it was still edible. Ate it and did not complain. The best thing I can say about Five Guys is that it tastes like homemade. The problem is that it tastes like I could make it at home. Good, but nothing special. With In-and-Out, I can't made a Double Double at home, and I can't duplicate Peter's Gourmade. I probably can't do a Habit burger either at home. But Five Guys, that one I feel like I do at home. Sure, I need to get a good bun. The Five Guy bun is pretty good. The meat is of high quality. The grilled onions are OK, the mushrooms were -eh. The fries were great, those I couldn't do at home. Better than In-and-Out, though I have never really cared for In-and-Out's fries. I would suggest unwrapping the burger as soon as you can after picking it up. Maybe in the midwest, when it is cold, you need the tin foil wrapper to keep it warm. Here, it ends up steaming the bun, which should have been toasted int he first place. Maybe you can request it... I've been wanting to try this place for a while due to the mixed reviews (both yelp and word of mouth) and finally got a chance to go yesterday. The first thing I noticed were the gigantic signs all over the wall screaming "WHERE BURGERS ARE BOSS" and "A MOUNTAIN OF DELICIOUS SPUDS" and "BEST FRENCH FRIES". I settled for a mini cheeseburger (which is 1 patty instead of the regular which has 2) and some fries. I wasn't even hungry but somehow I devoured the burger in minutes time. It was so soft and juicy and delicious, all the ingredients melted in my mouth, colliding together in burger goodness. One thing I like is that they are FAST. Service is good. And your burger comes out HOT. They even put a little sticker on your burger with a number so you don't need to unwrap everyone else's burger and poke around in them to figure out which one is whose. I like that. I hate it when people, even if they are beloved friends, poke around in my burger and then go "oh oops, this one is yours!" My conclusion for 5 guys is that it's a deliciously made homestyle burger. I don't know if it holds up to best french fries in the world or if the burger is boss but it's pretty darn good. OK. So there is only one thing you probably want to know: Is it better than In-N-Out. The short answer is no, it is not better than INO, but it is a really great burger. It definitely has a fresh made fresh to order taste but there is something about the taste of an INO burger that covers your taste buds with joy. Pretty good burger, I will be back! I got a little cheeseburger (1 patty) and I wished I got the double! I also got everything on it! (grilled onion/mushrooms, tomato, lettuce, pickle, mayo, ketchup, mustard). The bread was kinda disappointing (mushy). The fries were pretty good, the cajun style is a nice option. Peanuts rock! I'm addicted, they provide some extra calories for free. There are boxes of peanuts on all the trash cans. The seating area is very fluid and movable so it kinda looks a mess when you look at the dining room. It is also very cramped. The food took like 2 seconds to make. The burgers were very good. The meat is thicker than what In-n-Out serves and very juicy. I am of the opinion that the people who love In-n-Out love it because of the spread and their underground menu. 5 Guys does not offer it on their burgers and as far as I know they don't have the "special" unwritten menu items. Personally, I like both places. I thought 5G was pretty darn good. My only complaint was that when I ordered green peppers on my burger, I was expecting ortega chiles (aka roasted poblano chile) not green bell pepper, which is what I got. I really can't hold that against them though since I just assumed it was something different. I wouldn't hesitate to eat there again, nor will I give up my occasional double double with spread and grilled onions only. My heart (and tummy) has room for more than one great burger. read more

My husband had Five Guys last summer during a trip for work. He had talked it up ever since then so one afternoon I finally talked him into taking me. I was warned not to try to compare Five Guys to my beloved In N Out. So I walked in with an open mind knowing that it wouldn't be In N Out. My husband failed to tell me that the regular burger is actually 2 patties worth of sandwich. That was my fault though because I didn't read the sign on my own. So other than the fact that my sandwich was just too much meat for my liking, it was good. I ordered a very simple burger, with just cheese and mushrooms. I did like the customization options. When I want something other than a normal burger with lettuce and tomato, this will be the place to come. We also had the seasoned fries. I think they were cajun style (obviously they weren't memorable for me, ha). My husband looooved them. I thought they were just okay. He was baffled that I didn't enjoy them more but I guess I'm just a traditionalist when it comes to my fries. read more

I love all the options they offer with all of their grilled veggies they offer. Having the option to order a low carb bowl is awesome especially when you have to eat in the car on the go, it's not as messy as a lettuce wrap burger can get. I always order extra lettuce, extra on all the veggies too and it makes for a nice full bowl. read more

Whoa, this place is pretty ghetto. Pretty dirty with all of the peanut shells and everything else. The burgers were kinda disgusting because they were falling apart and the meat was definitely not good. In-N-Out is definitely better than this place for sure! The fries were nasty too. IN-N-OUT wanna be! Twice the price but not twice as good!!! When i arrived there was no wait so that was a plus right off the back considering that most people wait 30+ min! Menu is extra limited, NO SHAKES :( Burger was good but not great. The bun was soggy and falling apart before I even picked it up. I don't think they should wrap it in foil because all the steam from the beef is locked in! The beef patty was delicious and so were the toppings. Crisp lettuce, tomatoes, grilled onions and jalapenos all tasted very fresh! Fries were similar to island fries! I think "a-ok" is the perfect description. I ordered two things: Cajun fries, and a burger. The Cajun fries were lukewarm when they arrived and I typically prefer crispier fries, not thick cut, so they probably weren't something I would order again. Good flavor, just not a fan of the cut. The burger, though, was a solid 4 stars. The bottom bun was a tad soggy, but it's a burger. Things get greasy. While I love Five Guys food, this location is just awful. They've gotten my order wrong on numerous occasions. The quality of food is typical Five Guys quality- it's not the best burger in the world but it's better than InNout in my opinion. Shakes are delicious and you can make them pretty much however you'd like. French fries are good but only if you eat them warm because they are fresh. My final straw with this location though was when I order through Ubereats a week ago. They completely forgot a cheese burger. They never answered their phone so I had to leave work, drive 15 minutes to them, wait in line to tell them what happened, wait for them to cook my burger, and then drive 15 minutes back. Not only did I have to slam down my food because my lunch break was up but my fries were cold by the time I got back and I basically wasted money on ubereats since I had to drive there myself anyway.
