Came here for dinner on a Friday night during a staycation in Oceanside. Walking in we hear live music and the band was really good. We were seated quickly even though it was busy, which is nice. We opted for the sampler which gave us the option of choosing 4 meats and 4 sides. We picked baby back ribs, beef tenderloins, pork ribs, and catfish. For the sides we went southern and got collared greens, hush puppies, fried green tomatoes, and baked beans. For the meats, the baby back ribs were delicious, the other two meats were so-so, but the catfish was the star. It was perfectly fried and the fish was moist and flavorful, definitely the best I've ever had. For the sides, the collared greens was my favorite, the fried green tomatoes and hush puppies were on the dry side, and the baked beans were just a bit too sweet. The ambience was definitely southern and lively, which we both enjoyed. My wife liked the food more than I did, so I'm sure we will be back, which I really don't mind. I discovered Felix BBQ several years ago, and whenever we head to San Diego, we usually try to stop by for lunch or dinner on our way home. What originally drew me to this restaurant was their Alabama fried chicken. I've never had anything like it and still can't find anything comparable in the LA or Orange County area. The skin is incredibly crispy, and the meat is tender and juicy. They offer daily lunch specials that are great deals. I've had their BBQ ribs before, and they're just okay for me. The greens and mashed potatoes are good and are usually my go-to sides. I also like the fried green tomatoes and love that I can order them as an individual side. They're lightly battered and really tasty. On my last visit, the food quality was a bit off. The fried chicken batter wasn't as thick as usual, and the sides came out cold. That said, I won't let one off experience stop me from coming back. For dessert, their oatmeal cookies are really good. We were in town for Easter and found Felix's BBQ. Wow! So delicious! We were greeted and immediately sat. We both had the sweet tea, which was so tasty. They brought us the corn bread muffins and I could have eaten them all myself. We ordered the baby back ribs and the tips and each got 2 sides. We each had the beans and I had the candied sweet potatoes and my son had the red beans and rice. The meat had a nice smoky flavor and the meat was so tender! We just discovered the ideal Sunday lunch spot in Oceanside for our family to get our grub on after church. Yup, you guessed it, this place. Lol Felix, you had me at LIVE PIANO MUSIC, which is the first thing I noticed upon walking in. The gentlemen at the keys can play anything--from jazz to classical. From soul to Stevie Wonder. He even jazzed up Beethoven's Fur Elise! And he let one of my kids play and accompanied him. Best of all, it turns out he's there every Sunday! --the first reason we'll be back. Noah our server was most helpful in guiding us through the whole menu and making recommendations. I don't know how many requests we made for more napkins and plates, etc. for our multiple messy kids, but he was patient and quickly responsive through it all. He was even so generous as to give us a first time customer discount. Another reason to return Finally, the food. Our kids loved the beef ribs and baby back ribs. Tasty and tender. We got more after sampling them in the sampler platter. Same with the garlic shrimp which my wife ended up ordering two more orders of. We were in Oceanside for work so I checked on YELP to see what was good for lunch. The menu for this place caught my eye and made me hungry with anticipation. It did not disappoint. We got there around 2 on Saturday afternoon. When we walked in, it didn't look very busy but by the time we left, there were a lot of people waiting to get in. Lucky us. We were greeted right away and taken to a table. The biggest challenge was trying to decide what to eat. Looking around, we could see that the portions were a good size so my wife and I decided to split a meal. We ordered the 1/2 Rack of Ribs and 1/2 BBQ Chicken combo with Sweet Potato Fries and the Southern Baked Beans. Our drinks were brought out along with a basket of Cornbread Muffins. The muffins were delicious. So light and fluffy and full of flavor. Just as we were finishing the muffins, our lunch arrived. Amazing quick service and very attentive throughout the meal. Both the ribs and the chicken were delicious. Hard to say which was better. The ribs were fall off the bone tender and full of flavor. The chicken was cooked perfectly. So moist and tender and full of flavor as well. The fries and beans were a perfect pairing. Plenty of food for the two of us. But had no room for dessert. We will have to return to give that a try. I come all the way from Dallas, Texas every March to eat at my faves for my birthday. Felix's was such a let down this time around and a total waste of my trip. They were out of everything I wanted to order, and everything I ordered was horrendous. From the food to the drinks. Sad to say I have to let them go. It was absolutely horrible. So, I'm truly disappointed in how the service has been going here. The last few times I've been here there seems to be a lot of staff, but no one really knowing what's going on. Basically there's no organization and just a hectic mess. My recent visit, I was told they didn't have an item, only to see they did have it. Also I was told misinformation and then charged incorrectly, and after addressing the issue nothing was done about it. Every single thing we ordered was solid, even my son's kids cheeseburger disappeared immediately, and he is superduper picky. I will say the brisket I ordered was a little dry, but the collard greens were unreal.. hands-down, the best I've ever had. Perfectly seasoned and absolutely full of smoky flavor, additionally my partners catfish nuggets were crispy outside juicy on the inside and the mac & cheese was very well done and full of flavor. Hi every body. Okay, so Socal and Soulfood don't seem a likely pairing. If you agree, stop, we're wrong. I'm a born and raised southern man, and quite the southern cook. I got greens, beans, tomatoes, potatoes, hams, yams, YOU NAAAAME IT! (Shirley Caesar). Felix's has that level of soul. Do you eat your greens by mashing a hunk of cornbread into the greens with your fingers, and eating with your digits? I do. This is real southern style soul food. This is that Crooked letter, that Bama, that Jawguh style soul food you don't see out side the deep south. I grew up in all 3 of them, plus Tejas and Virginny. Collard green juice is in my veins along with a dash of Louisiana hot sauce. I burn in the kitchen. This place burns better than me. Fall off the bone tender ribs. Candied yams, could have used slices if lemon (hint, authentic southern candied yams must have lemons cooked in). Oh these were great sweet spuds, but the next level up requires sliced lemons that render and become candied themselves. The cornbread is a southern staple, Jiffy, but they obviously put a spin on it that had the muffins floating off the platter. These where fresh, hot, fresh n hot, lightly sweet, crust was so golden. I was sad when I ran out. No component was served that didn't seem prepared with intensity. Someone put their whole foot in this meal and wiggled each toe. (That's southern chef for they prepared this meal with love ). The server was super nice, very attentive, really seemed genuine. They also have live music. My mom made amazing tender brisket. -Brisket- was a bit tougher than I'd like. -Pork- was ok -St Louis rib. So good! It didn't seem to have sauce on it but had a great flavor and it was very tender. The country potatoes were seasoned to perfection and the buttermilk biscuit was delicious. We enjoyed this meal with fresh coffee blended to Alabama love. Great Southern comfort food! This place is really really good. It's not Texas BBQ but they do have delicious stuff. They have a wide assortment of dishes from the south... They got Cajun and BBQ! That's the best combo! I had a mixed BBQ plate with four meats, brisket, pork, chicken and tri tip... You get the Southern sides... Collard greens, black eyed peas, Mac n cheese, red beans n rice... Oh. Complimentary warm cornbread muffins! That's what I'm talking about! Very hard to find good food like this in socal. Epic. Both times I went they had live music playing. Weekday lunch, had to catch the specials! We were seated immediately by a cheerful young man in a gigantic booth. After some time perusing the gigantic menu, I ordered the $12 blackened catfish with one side. It is quite a bargain these days! I ordered sweet potato fries and collard greens which was an extra $3 for the second side. Very reasonable. The catfish was very moist and tender, I actually wouldn't have mind it a little pan sear. The sweet potato fries were crunchy and perfect, and the collard greens were impressively flavorful considering they were not loaded with bacon. Server said it's a turkey broth. I could taste a little bit of crushed red pepper too. I would call this a fantastic pot liquor! Husband ordered the brisket platter ($24 which was not a lunch special) and it came with two sides so he got baked beans and potato salad. The brisket serving was so large he brought home six slices and had them the next day. The brisket did not have a lot of bark, but was very moist and had some edge fat that had to be removed. The barbecue sauce was already applied, and was not offensive but we do prefer a spicy sauce. Beans and salad were good homemade versions. Our cheerful server brought me ranch and kept up with coke refills. What more could you ask? He was was also our cashier at the end. I'll start by saying we love the food here. Fabulous every time. However, the service was honestly pretty lousy. It was a Wednesday night, a few tables but nothing out of control. I've seen it much busier on the weekend. I only saw 2 servers the entire time, a man and a woman. I'll try to keep it short because honestly, we didn't have enough interaction to say much about. It took at least 10 minutes to even get out drinks ordered, the waiter seemed a little irritated with us, at least that's how I felt and commented to my partner. It wasn't until we ordered fried green tomatoes and he told us they weren't available right now that seemed to snap him back into a less intimidating mood. He was much friendlier after that although apparently he assumed i didn't want a refill of my empty iced tea that I sat at the edge of the table so it could be seen because neither he or the lady server who brought our food ever checked on us again until we were literally done eating and we asked for a box and the check at the same time because I was afraid we wouldn't see anyone again for another half hour. It most definitely affected his tip significantly, which is also something we rarely do. I will almost always leave 20% for even mediocre service but from the moment he told us to pick a table until the fried green tomatoes, I felt like we were annoying him by having even walked in the door. My boyfriend asked if I wanted to leave, that's how uncomfortable I felt. We weren't given any condiments or even asked if we needed any. My bf had to stop the lady after she brought our food to get ketchup and tartar sauce. It was just overall disappointing. We are certainly not a demanding couple and try not to bother with too many requests but they literally just put us there and then it felt like they grudgingly came to our table when they had to. It likely won't stop me from returning THIS TIME because the food is worth it, but if it has become their regular way of service, I'll have to definitely reconsider whether or not I want to feel like a nuisance at a place that I'm paying money to enjoy my meal and experience. I chose baby back pork ribs, fried shrimp, sautéed shrimp, and the tri tip. As far as the sides, I got mac & cheese, collard greens, baked beans, and candied yams. My partner got the half of rack of beef ribs with catfish, and his sides were mac & cheese and mashed potatoes. I would give everything overall a 9/10. My favorite menu item is the sweet potato waffle with a side of sausage. The waffle is executed perfectly with just the right amount of crunch and sweet potato goodness. Overall I prefer to eat breakfast here. Our last visit I tried the fried pork chops with county potatoes and eggs. And now this is my second favorite menu item here! The crunchy fried batter is seasoned nicely and goes well with the brown gravy. The little cubes of potato's have just the right amount of crunch versus softness inside. The chicken and waffles are really good. Chicken is tender, juicy with a flavorful crunchy outside. I prefer the sweet potato waffles because well they are just phenomenal.
