Okay, so don't read this review if you have a weak stomach. I went to get a quick pedicure yesterday before some of my girlfriends and I went out to dinner. Three things that made this an awful experience. 1. My technician was visibly feeling under the weather; she had a red nose and was all sniffly. I felt bad because the pollen has been outrageous and I too have really bad allergies, so I didn't say anything when she wiped her nose all on her arm and hand (and no, she did not sanitize afterwards). What I DID mind was when I felt a warm drop on my toe, and I looked town to see THERE WAS SNOT ON MY TOE!!! I'm not even joking. I didn't say anything because I was too busy trying not to barf. Even as I'm typing this I am still gagging. 2. When I was asked to pay, I told the technician to add my tip on the credit card, to which she replied, "you don't have cash?" Uhhh, RUDE!! 3. At dinner, my girlfriend (who speaks Vietnamese) tells me that while my technician had paused my pedicure to talk to the tech right next to her (after I had told her I was in a rush), she was commenting on "how my feet look like rats feet" in her native language. Classy. Absolutely horrible experience. It's a shame, because I used to like this place, but the things that happened last night are just outrageous. Been coming here for a few years and I'm so glad I found this place! I always get the spa pedicure or pedicure with sea salt scrub, both are well worth the price. I usually also get a design on my big toe and have gotten tons of compliments every time. The polish lasts forever it seems like, I've taken it off two weeks later and it looks as good as when it was first put on. Each attendant I've been with is amazing and knows what she is doing. I love this nail salon. I've been going now for almost two months and I see Michelle every time. She is the sweetest woman. She shares her life story with me and I share mine with her. She always thanks me for making an appointment with her again. I have gel tips and I get them filled every three weeks or so. I've never had a tip break or polish even chip off. They are a little bit thicker than I have seen from other salons but not nearly as thick as others. For the price, I think this is the best salon around. And PS if your skin is being pulled off with wax, chances are it's because you're taking some sort of medication or using a topical cream that is making your skin extra sensitive. One star is generous. If you don't mind blood and uneven slanted nails... This is the place for you. I only treat myself to a manicure maybe once a year for a special occasion. So this was very disappointing. My daughter and I both had bad experiences, no one even tried to be pleasant, the technician was more interested in the television than my nails. Each time I pulled my hand away because the nail file was cutting into my skin she rolled her eyes and barked something at her colleague in another language. I came here for a French pedicure that came off just three days after I got it. The lady that did it was nice but didn't seem to take much time or ask what I wanted for it. I come here often and they always give great service! They're usually pretty packed, no matter the day so expect to wait a little bit. They have a wide selection of polish colors and the people who work here are always nice. You are usually greeted right away and the prices are the average prices in the area. There are 2 different Yelp review pages for this business. The other seems to catch the majority of the bad reviews while this one seems to receive higher ratings. Not sure where the disconnect is, but have no fear, I'm here to help even out the ratings on this one. I was absolutely shocked to see so many people giving this place 4 or 5 stars. I'm glad they're having great experiences here, but I have NEVER had it. Even the person who brought me here told me it would be a pain in the butt... and she wasn't lying! To keep it simple, here are some points: 1. Employees are not friendly. 2. While working on your nails they speak to each other in their native language, which makes me uncomfortable, especially when they barely acknowledge you as the customer. 3. They are relentless about trying to upsell. In fact, they're downright rude when telling you that they think you "need" certain services. 4. They're also known to be very deceptive - asking you if you want certain things done during your service without telling you that it will be an extra charge. 5. Their work is DECENT. That's it; just decent. For all that you have to endure during your visit here, "decent" isn't good enough for me! One star because of cleanliness, one for decent work and the ability to walk in and receive services fairly quickly. read more

Rather large nail salon in a pretty large plaza. Run by a group of cute l'il asian women - this shop does a pretty good job. Watch out though because prices really aren't posted anywhere. Walk in the door and it seems like the most you wait is about 5 minutes max? I got a manicure and spa pedicure (really needed it) and it cost me about $55 for everything. My spa pedicure included all the normal things plus a moisturizing facial for my feet, good scrub down, exfoliation, and massage. Really good! read more

My 5 star rating is for Mary, who has been doing my nails for the past 7 years. I'm almost afraid to rave about how absolutely wonderful she is because I know that will mean it's even harder to get an appointment with her. :) But, really, she is just wonderful at what she does! Not only does she do an awesome job on gel nail fills, but gives a relaxing hand massage as part of her manicures, and does this all in record time. She's personable, making you feel like you're more of a friend than simply a random customer. I have gone to so many different nail salons (both previous to finding Mary and Fancy Nails and at certain times when I've been out of town or just could not get an appointment with her when I've been way overdue for a fill) and have never been happy. I've visited this nail salon twice, serviced by 2 different nail techs. I was impressed with my nails when I initially left however both times I had multiple nails lift. After the second time I had two nails that had to be completely taken off and every artificial nail was lifting. I went here to get my eyebrows waxed. I get it done every once in a while and I just stopped in because I had some time to kill. Plus, I was going out that night. I just moved to Centreville from Fairfax so I wasn't very familiar with the place. I got the waxing done and usually the redness will go away in 8 hours or so, but not this time. The lady who did this waxing must have pulled multiple layers off because, while the redness went down, there were scabs that formed under my brows the next day and it hurt really badly. Mary Tu is the consumate professional! I've been going to her for 5 years and everyone compliments me on my nails! My nails NEVER BREAK OR CRACK OR SPLIT. I drive from Gainesville to have Mary do my nails and feet. Pedicures are a dream. She massages and massages those feet and what a delight! She is pleasant, never pushy and FAST! Mary is a perfectionist; she is an artist as well in case you ever wanted a unique design. I type all day long and my nails look as good as when I left the salon. This past weekend was my first time coming to this salon. It's not my go to but it was convenient on both instances. I came here last Thursday during the early evening after receiving a massage next door. My boyfriend scheduled an appointment for me for my birthday and everyone who worked there made sure to wish me a happy birthday. That was very nice. It was funny when the lady doing my pedicure whispered "how old are you" LOL! I'm not ashamed of my age so I said it loud and proud "26!" My pedicure was done rather quickly. She had to do a lot of clean up throughout the process (getting polish off my skin, using her nail and a brush w/ acetone to remove it). That generally makes me nervous because I don't want them to mess up the polish in the process, so I like my nail tech to be a bit of a perfectionist, so had she been moving a bit slower, she may not have messed up so much. They have a HUGE selection of polishes here, but this makes me nervous because how often do the workers actually make sure the polish is still good. Luckily, I'm a polish junkie, so I checked the polish before I used it. Also, it would be nice to have the colors organized by shades and hues within the brand organizer. It felt like being in Forever 21 looking for something, my eyes were darting everywhere looking for a blue I wanted. The basic pedicure is just that, basic. It doesn't come with a paraffin wax dip or any type of scrub, but the plus is that the pedicure is I believe only $20, so if you want all that extra stuff it's an option instead of your lower tier pedicure being $30. The first time I went the nail tech, took her time, so it's definitely about who does the polish for you. read more

The customer service was horrible. They should not be able to use the word spa in their name. It was not relaxing at all. I felt the technician (if u can call her that) rushed me and rushed the procedure. Especially since I didn't want to upgrade to the more expensive pedicure. I tried to do small talk and it was pretty much one word answers; very unfriendly. It's a shame cause it is a large place with, nice in atmosphere and a very lard selection in colors and possibilities for nails and toes. The location was great for me. I will not return and do not recommend this establishment. I let my toes dry for 20 min then left; when I got home there was nail polish on the skin of two toes but no smudges on either toe next to them so that let's me know she was ver careless in her rushing. Updating my review: I haven't gone here in MONTHS and the only reason I came was because of their color selection and convenience to my house. HOLY CRAP. my nails looked like *****. The lady who did my nails saw my hang nail on a finger, pulled it to show the lady next to her how it looked like and started rambling in Vietnamese. After that she pulled a used cuticle cutter from her drawer (DRAWER NOT OVEN), and I asked if it was clean, she put my hand on the table, rolled her eyes and said OH MY GOD yes it is clean your the first to use. Well, why was it open? She was so disgustingly rude and obnoxious. I asked why she didn't put a base coat on my gel manicure and she pointed at a sign that said no need for base coat with that type of nail polish. REALLY then why did my nails start peeling and chipping 3 DAYS AFTER?!?! The polish was so thick and uneven, and afterwards there was some nail polish on my finger, instead of taking it away with nail polish remover she cut it off, so now i have weird chunks on my fingers missing. Like horrible horrible service, dirty utensils, (i got a infection in my toe once, please don't ask why i ended up going back i know that was stupid on my part). IF you go, take your own utensils and go see TINA, she is great!!! I've heard great things about Mary and Linda too. Just dont go to table #8, and bring your own utensils. OH and don't try to complain they just start rambling and won't listen to you. someone should call for a health inspection. ____________________________________________________________________ Everyone on here is complaining about their nail technician not engaging in conversation. If it's your first time somewhere, why would you think you'd have an unbreakable bond with your technician? I decided to try it again end of 2013 and I saw someone recommended Tina. So I went to see if I could get an appointment with Tina (which is hard because she has a big clientele), but with my luck I walked in and she was available immediately. A nail technician doesn't HAVE to talk to you, but Tina did. Tina was VERY professional about everything she did, from the conversations she had with you to her techniques and upgrade approach. Whenever I upgrade to sea salt, or whatever Tina does for me, I enjoy every minute and dollar I spend for it. She is a great person to engage in conversation with because I have been consistent and gone to her and only her. She does what you ask her to do and goes BEYOND it to make sure you're happy and will not let you leave if you are not happy. The place itself is better than normal nail salons because they have so many technicians there and they are all wonderful, and I've seen with my own eyes that they all do engage in conversation with their clients. If it's your first time at Fancy nails I would DEFINITELY recommend you to go to TINA! She is the best lady, ever! read more

I have been here several times and each time they were accommodating of my child who is disabled and has muscle reflexes making it tricky to do a manicure. Last time i went with her the elderly woman who must be a matriarch there decided to tell me how they can't accommodate us if they are busy. When doing my daughters pedicure she must have cut too short as she was crying. I won't return there with her after that treatment of a disabled child. Mary has great knowledge in keeping your feet soft and with good maintenance after the pedicure. The salon is not in my neighborhood, but certainly worth the drive there. I wish I'd followed my first instinct & walked back out the door as soon as I walked in. It was dirty and not well-maintained. The pedicure was ok. They ended up using a color other than the one I had chosen, but I didn't notice until it was too late. I had a gel (shellac) manicure & it was the worst I've ever had. You can see through the polish and it feels rough to the touch. It doesn't look glossy at all and already seems "worn" after 1 day. They also soaked off my old shellac by putting my fingertips in acetone, instead of using the cotton wrapped with foil to just soak the polish. Finally, the manicurist didn't trim my cuticles or do anything else but put the polish on poorly. The services cost less than other salons, just proving you get what you pay for. As other reviewers have said, the upsell is annoying & the place reeks of chemicals. I wish I'd checked Yelp before I went :( read more
