I wanted to share my experience at Extra Space Storage #1796 in Spicewood, TX was so troubling that I felt compelled to speak out. From the moment I arrived on April 30th, I was met with rudeness and a clear lack of professionalism by the on-site manager, "Pete." He was my first point of contact over the phone and greeted me in person with a tone that felt dismissive and hostile. I couldn't ignore the strong sense of prejudice and racial bias in how I was treated -- something no customer should ever experience. I had purchased a unit under the understanding (as stated by the company used) that I had 48 hours to clear it out. However, upon arrival around 2:20 PM, I was told I had only until 9 AM the next morning because the unit was already scheduled for someone else. This gave me less than 24 hours to complete everything -- a complete contradiction to what I was promised. Despite the stressful time crunch, I did my best to adapt. Pete said he would text me the gate code -- which I never received. I waited for over 30 minutes, then had to follow up myself. When I did, his tone was rude and unhelpful, as though I was inconveniencing him just for asking to enter the property I had already paid for. Later that day, he sent me a different gate code and told me I'd need to use that one going forward. I explained that we were coming back that same night to finish due to the tight deadline. When we returned after dropping off our first load, neither code worked. We were locked out of the facility, despite doing everything we were told and making a 2-hour drive from out of town. Customer service was no help, and because of this, we were forced to stay overnight and pay the hotel fee -- two vehicles, hours away from home, with no access to our unit, and under the threat of losing our deposit and belongings. All of this happened because of Pete's negligence, incompetence and lack of basic communication. He later acknowledged the problem and promised a resolution, which I waited a full week to receive. Nothing has been done. No follow-up, no apology -- nothing. I hope this review reaches upper management or ownership, because this is not just about poor customer service -- it's about accountability. Pete's unprofessionalism, lack of empathy, and dismissive attitude reflect poorly on the entire company. It's unacceptable for someone in a customer-facing position to act this way, and I sincerely hope steps are taken to prevent this from happening to others. read more

I reserved a unit in July, with the understanding and direct conversation/negotiation to set my rate for a term of 1 year. I know this because I was aggressively shopping area rates and knew that I would be in a temporary living situation for at least the next 12 months. I just received a notice in the mail that my rate is nearly doubling (from $134 to $200) and told that "verbal agreements are non-binding" and that we'll have to go with whatever the language in the agreement says; which despite what we had agreed to of course says "month to month". This is NOT representative of what I had been told/sold. My hope is this can be resolved as I've asked for the information to be reviewed. If not, I would agree with a separate poster about the use of bait and switch tactics here. Without resolution I will be moving out and advising people to avoid this place. Will update accordingly. Update: The onsite manager was able to adjust the rate increase and allow me to pre-pay for the duration of what I believed to be an annual agreement thus protecting me for the remaining months of the 12-month period. My advice: make sure your agreement is for the time period you expect, and that the agreement is worded to reflect that versus the default "month to month"! I'm grateful they worked with me and am wiser for the experience. read more

This place does classic bait and switch, gives you a low price, you move your stuff in, and within no time you get a note about massive rate increase. Don't go near this place! You will end up paying much more. read more

We had a great experience when we initially took this unit out last fall. The woman in the office was very helpful and we thought we had a good rate and nice location. We were told it made no difference on the rate whether we signed for a minimum amount of time or just did month to month. Well 4 months later our rate increased 50%. However, the worst part is we discovered the unit leaks and at least one piece of my furniture is seriously damaged from water. Likely other things damaged as well but it was too dark to access much of the unit. We knew we didn't have a climate controlled unit but certainly assumed it was watertight. We used Uhaul for years and never had a leak or a price increase of this magnitude. I guess with a unit that leaks we have no choice but to get the stuff out of there - very disappointing - luckily we have the insurance. read more

I was helped by a gentleman who was here as a fill in from Dallas. He was fantastic! He explained in great detail everything that would be needed. He informed me that insurance is required by the property (which was the case at the last storage unit I had elsewhere). He also informed me that there are different options including using home or renter's insurance if your plan covers storage units. The only requirement is that you have to bring them proof of it (obviously!). I chose their plan because it was cheaper than renter's insurance and technically I don't rent or own a home so I don't need the extra coverage. I'm sure they make money off the insurance, but don't all insurance companies? Isn't that how business is done with mark ups? Obviously! I held my unit online and it clearly showed a few size options that only had a one or two units left. Not surprising as I recently read an article about how the storage unit industry is growing in this area right now. Considering all of the new folks we have in town that should be obvious as well! Don't listen to the other review. This place is great. Insurance doesn't have to be required by the state for it to be required by the complex. It's also a month to month so if you don't like it you can always try to find somewhere that doesn't require insurance, though I imagine most reputable places will require it. It's also not a bad idea to have it. We had a storage unit broken into years ago in Marble Falls and had no insurance! Lost electronics and family heirlooms. A few bucks a month is worth the piece of mind knowing if the place floods I can get reimbursed for my things. read more

I've rented storage space twice now from Extra Space Storage in Spicewood. I highly recommend storing your things there. It's very safe and clean! Victor is the manager at the Spicewood location. He is truly the best! He always goes the extra mile. He's always willing to answer your questions and offer his expert advice. Very professional and always upbeat! DO NOT RENT HERE! This is a great facility - clean, well-run, secure and easily accessible. BUT. when we rented a space for our RV about 6 months ago and were given a price, I specifically asked if that price would change - "No" was the answer. The price I was quoted (and we have been paying) is the SAME price as they advertise on their website today. But a few days ago, I got a letter from Extra Space saying the price was increasing by about $30% to reflect "current market conditions". If the current market conditions mean a price increase, why are they still advertising the original lower price on their web site for new customers? The contract fine print says they can increase the price on you with 30 days notice - ignore the sales pitch and the verbal assurances that your price will not increase - IT WILL. I called the facility to discuss the price increase and was told that the price on the web is just few new customers and that our price will increase. Not good - I am looking for a new storage facility. DO NOT USE THESE GUYS. read more

They lie to you and say it is required by the state to purchase their renters insurance. they also act like the unit you want is the only one left and someone else is calling for it as well so you have to go in and get it in person and can reserve online like the place down the street. They under cut their prices so you go there but then require you to purchase the insurance they sell and make a commission from I'm sure. So you end up paying more. When I told her I wasn't interested in purchasing insurance SHE LIED and said it was required by the state. It's NOT!! Don't be fooled!!!
