ZERO STARS - Deceptive Practices, Disrespectful Staff, and Surveillance-Level Behavior My experience at the Extra Space Storage - San Pablo (Moraga Road) location has been one of the most unprofessional and disturbing customer service interactions I've ever encountered. Let's begin with the facts: My unit started at $228/month. Within less than a year, it was raised to nearly $500--with no improvements to service or explanation beyond corporate rate excuses. This is more than a 100% increase in under 12 months. When I voiced concerns about the pricing and mentioned I may move out, an employee literally said "bye" and hung up on me. That alone should disqualify someone from working in customer service. Shortly after filing formal complaints (including with the BBB), I noticed a Facebook post mocking me--publicly visible and posted within hours of my complaint. The employee who responded to my original email inquiry used a name and email that matched the Facebook account, making it clear that the person monitoring my complaints is also watching my social media. This employee, Deva Shalece Harris, also happens to be the only person with that name on my friend list--despite never identifying herself during our storage-related communication. That means not only was I mocked, but I was digitally watched and then publicly ridiculed, by a staff member with access to my account. I've since escalated this to the district manager, Linz Askham, with screenshots and formal documentation. As of now, I've received polite emails but no accountability, no apology, and no real resolution. I now have serious concerns about privacy, data misuse, and professionalism at this facility. If you are a customer here, or considering storing your belongings, please ask yourself: What does it say when the staff can stalk your social media and then mock you for filing a legitimate complaint? This is not about bad vibes--it's about breach of trust, targeted retaliation, and lack of internal oversight. Do better, Extra Space Storage. I was reluctant to write this review; however, I wish I would have read others prior to renting a unit as it would have saved me time in this process. Five stars is solely for the friendliest of the staff and how helpful they were with clarifying and assisting with concerns. One star is for the special rate offered quickly followed by the immediacy of the price increase. I moved into my unit October 2022 for $33 (including all fees), February 2023 my rate increased by almost double to $53. When I contacted the facility at the end on January, I was told a letter was sent December 2022 informing me of the rent increase. I was informed by the woman at the facility promotional rates are good for 5-6 months; however, two months after renting the unit I was already receiving a rental increase notification (I never received). All communication has been provided solely via email (payment due, payment received, caring for my unit...) and the rent increase notification is the only document stated was mailed to me. I would not recommend this company if you seek reliability as the contract does not stipulate the length of the promotional lease terms. Per the woman I spoke with at the facility, the 5-6 months of promotional pricing she said is honored was not upheld as October to January is 4 months and my rate increased in February (my 5th month). I vacated the unit prior to February's renewal date, fortunate I had a small unit and could do so. Do better Extra Storage. Highly disappointed. read more

I've been renting storage here for about 6 years now. The grounds are always clean and the customer service is always very attentive and efficient when you reach out to them. The price increases are unfortunately the only thing that I am bummed about, as it has become so difficult for me to keep up with them. I hesitate to write this review, as the facilities and staff have been great- very clean and access hours are good. I've been happy with the experience for the most part, with the exception of their pricing policy. THE GOOD: Responsive staff, spotless grounds, safe location. During the two years at the site, they have installed remote locks to access the gates and storage space via a phone app, which is nice, though I didn't ask for them- my own lock and an access gate code was fine by me (NOTE: I was one of the early "pilot" storage spaces that had this installed and it was a clunky experience, as they kept having to update the app to make it work better and the instructions as to how to use the app weren't accurate or were poorly documented- you also get locked out of your space even if your payment is is past due by a day. Seems that they've worked out the bugs for the most part but I am finding that I still have to update the app every time I need to use the facility otherwise it doesn't work, which is annoying). The BAD: In the two years there, my 10 x 15 ft space monthly rental has INCREASED A FULL 60%, with an incremental 30% increase each year (and Extra Space claiming "market conditions" for the increase). Real estate taxes, operating costs and storage as well as the economic conditions hasn't created the necessity for a 60% increase in two years. Its insincere and its simply a money grab, and I don't want to be paying for someone else's boat payments. I'm currently looking on the web site today to see what a new person would be paying for the exact same and the "web rate" is $300/mo, and my rate will start in March @ $433/mo (I just received the 30 day notice)- it should be noted that I started at $268/mo in April of 2020, which was reasonable. I'm waiting to see if the "web rate" increases next month to match up. Originally, I got the "web rate" (more like a "teaser" rate) and they quickly moved me to the "standard" rate after the first year. It's funny how most businesses do what they can to keep current customers (its cheaper and develops loyalty, among other things), but this industry seems to favor the notion of forcing customers out by extracting the most money to the point where there is no longer a compelling reason to keep doing business with them, all in order to bring in new customers (paying a lower rate!). I'm interested in seeing what the owner has to say, but it seems like they only respond to 5 star reviews. Business is business, I get it. But the new pricing seems like a reach and the explanation for it is weak tea. ***Buyer beware if you plan to store items for an extended period of time and ALSO EXPECT A SUBSTANTIAL RENT INCREASE EVERY YEAR. All in all, this was a really good experience with this specific location of Extra Space Storage. I had the Bluetooth lock which was great. The app had problems a couple times, so that meant we had issues opening the gate to the facility and the unlocking the lock on the storage unit. I don't know what all these other folks are raving about with this place but I've got nothing good to say about this place. I had to put our belongings in this place 4 years ago when my step-father died and my wife and I had to move in to my 89 year old mother's house to care for her. This past week I moved our belongings and found my furniture covered with rat urine and rat shit. There were several spots where the rats had eaten through sheet rock not to mention the holes that were left uncovered around around the sprinkler system. My love seat and sofa were covered with rat shit, my other furniture was covered with mold and mildew. When I spoke to the woman in the office she tried to give me a song and dance about not buying their renters insurance. I have my own insurance through Allstate but I'm not going to turn in a claim I feel it's their responsibility. If they are going to be in business it's their responsibility to provide a clean safe place to store your belongings especially at the ridiculous prices they charge monthly. By the way be ready for increases in your rent annually in excess of $50.00. This is a storage unit not a luxury hotel! Get a grip. read more

So far so good. One star knocked off only because they MAKE you get insurance. I am storing some personal items of no value to others just to myself, so insurance is kinda pointless to me.
