I'm a regular customer and to my dismay, the short & skinny rude man was working behind the counter today. (I tend to avoid the restaurant when I see him b/c he is super rude.) I was really craving their jerk chicken so I sucked it up and went in. I ordered the following from the MENU: 1/4 jerk chicken ($6) and side of plaintains ($3). When I placed my order with him, he said I couldn't order the plaintains as a side b/c they need to have some to put in every plate. What?! He proceeded to explain that they'll only sell it as a side if there's excess. Huh?! So I asked why was it on the menu. He didn't answer me, but repeated that they only sell it as a side when they have it in excess. I asked him who is the owner and he said he is. LOL So unfortunate. Now that I know he is the owner, I don't know if I want to continue supporting him and his business even though the rest of the staff is cool and the food is good. The owner acts like a jerk. So you walk in and head to the front corner, place your order, pay and wait till they call your number. They move fast in here so make sure you're paying attention. The counter is taller than me so I tend to not cover as much as I would like but I make due, they then bag it and you either hop on a train or bus to get to your destination cause eating in there isn't really an option. They had no idea who was talking to them. I literally had to do small hops (okay, not so small) to get their attention. The visual is hilarious. Then I saw the grill... It was lined with chicken leg quarters. Ugh. I'm not a dark meat fan, so it did not look appetizing to me. When I received my jerk lunch meal, it was...of course the leg quarters. In Chicago, I'm accustomed to jerk lunches/dinners consisting of a mixture of dark and white meat. My bf then eats the dark, I eat the white. I didn't ask for white meat because I didn't know I had to. I tried it and although it was soft and moist as over reviewers claim, to me it was not very good. It was pretty bland and just average overall. My bf makes better jerk and he's not even Jamaican (don't tell him though). When we return to NY, we will try another restaurant. So then I asked for either a substitute side item or a discount. She replied and said "I have to pay full price even without the cabbage age and there's no substitute." So juicy and nicely stacked into a take-home dish. Spicy, but the best I have ever tasted. I had also bough the "veggie dish" which is your choice of side dishes (2) to go with the jerk chicken. My two dishes were the baked mac , sweet plantains and rice and peas with oxtail gravy. MY LORD! It was the most deliciously prepared meal I have ever tasted. That was way back in 2004. I continue to eat here at least three times a month. Which reminds me, it is about that time. My only complaint is that the place is small. The lines tend to extend outside once the lobby is full.
