If you are like most Yelper foodies, when you are in a new place that you have never been before you start Yelping for good places to eat. In this case it's the Flatbush section of Brooklyn NY, more specifically Church Ave and Nostrand Ave. We asked our B&B host for a recommendation of where to eat. I Yelped their recommendation and came up with four starts!!! But the place only received 5 reviews total with four 5 Star and one 1 star review. No"elite" reviewers so I can't take those four star reviews too seriously. By happenstance while waiting for a bus at this intersection I click on the nearby restaurants function of the Yelp app and up pops Exquisite Delight, BBQ and Jerk chicken, ox tails and other Caribbean specialties, this sounds promising. Several hundred reviews, most of them very positive, now I have to try it out for myself. This place only has a few seats inside, cash only and 99% of the people take their food to go. The food? It's called "Exquisite Delight" and it lives up to it's name. Ox tails are tender and seasoned deftly. The BBQ chicken is well made with moist meat and flavorful skin. The jerk chicken is praised as one of the best if not the best in the area. Although often labled a jerk I'm not an expert in the chicken of my namesake, all I can say is the chicken is great tasting and juicy. These combo items come with brown or yellow rice, vegetables and plantains as an accompaniment. These are not merely items to fill out your large or medium foil container but genuine complements that improve the experience. Do you often hear about people praising the vegetables at a meatcentric place? Well I will, they are well seasoned and not mushy or overcooked. You place your order, pay and then wait for them to call you to the counter where they will ask you your preferred sides options. Before sealing your choices under a plastic dome you will be given the opportunity to quickly further directly season your meal with a half-dozen side sauces if you please. If you are one of those people like me who partially judge your takeout meal by it's weight, you will be pleased. Carrying several of these meals any distance will help to pre-load your appetite as will the heavenly smells and envious stares from passerbys. It was completely devoured and there was so much left over of all the other food. The spices they just get right and each taste you're wanting more like I'm pretty sure I ate half of what she bought haha! Hands down good jerk chicken. The wait surprisingly wasn't long. This is def a neighborhood spot and I personally wouldn't travel far for it. This area hasn't been gentrified yet so definitely watch your back. It is cash only and as of 01/01/19 the prices have increased. A large Jerk with tax cost $14 while you can get a whole Jerk for $15( these are not the updated prices). Overall, it Satisfy my cravings for roughly 2 meals. I like the fact that they do have a sauces on the side so that you can basically drench your food in there before they close it up and pack it away for you. Nothing is really special. I just moved into the neighborhood and have been settling in nicely. At my gym, there's an ongoing debate as to who serves the best jerk chicken. There's one hold out who likes a place out on Utica Ave best (haven't gotten the name out of him just yet), and then the rest like Exquisite Delight. Given how close it is to me, and the fact that I love jerk chicken but haven't found a top tier place nearby yet--despite the fact that there are like 40 with 10 blocks of my house--I went to check it out. Walking in, this is your prototypical jerk chicken joint. Minimal seating. Open kitchen. An old ass menu. An unclear system for ordering due to people waiting all around for their food and some just standing around. It's also cash only so make sure you have some before ordering. I got a small jerk chicken and small is really a relative term. It's the small in that there's a large size option that's absolutely fucking massive. I got it with rice and peas, veggies and plantains. When they put it all together for you, they set it on the counter so you can add the sauces yourself. The sauces were BBQ, jerk, hot sauce, and ketchup I believe. I added a generous amount of jerk and a small amount of hot sauce to the rice. After getting home, I devoured the whole fucking thing. The chicken was great quality meat, with perfectly crisp skin on the outside. The jerk sauce had the right amount of spice to complement the bird with overwhelming it. The rice and peas and veggies were both good, with the fiery hot sauce not just contributing heat but all some depth of flavor. In addition, the plantains were perfectly caramelized and well suited as a dessert. I skipped dinner after this and was absolutely fine the next day. This is serious chicken my friends. If you're going to come here on a weeknight, be prepared for a long wait. Make sure you don't skip anyone in line. The queue sometimes makes no sense since it is a small place and at some points the line takes on a circular formation, so for the most part it just looks like an unorganized crowd. Play it safe and simply ask the other people where the line ends. People know a good thing when its there. The food is definitely worth the wait. I mean something has to be going right when not only non-Carribeans like your Jerk Chicken, but authentic Carribeans are also swearing by how good it is. The jerk chicken is the piece de resistance, but their other entrees are great as well. The mac n' cheese is so unhealthily pleasant--rich, tasty and with every bite, you feel the guilt. The oxtail in gravy is also great. Also, the portion sizes are very generous. If you opt for the small dinner instead of the large, you still get so much food that you're pretty much done with food for the rest of the day. Now what makes me love this particular Jerk Chicken spot is that they probably have the best jerk sauce I have ever tasted in my life. I basically drown my chicken in the sauce, and whatever chicken I can't finish tastes twice as good when reheated on the following day. And the hot sauce they offer you is actually HOT. When you mix the hot sauce and jerk sauce together, it takes their chicken to an entirely new level. This place has truly evolved over the years. Years ago you couldn't get options like mac and cheese , salmon or even the pineapple jerk sauce. Their jerk chicken quality has surely gone up over the years as well which is why i rate them 5 stars. I only order jerk chicken from here and I combine their new pineapple jerk sauce with abit of regular jerk sauce on the chicken (you do it yourself when they call your number) and splatter some oxtail gravy on my rice and peas and get the usual plantains and cabbage sides. I get the large as I am one of those obsessive compulsive eaters that don't mind eating the same meal three days straight which is what 12 bucks gets me.. NOTE: When entering just go straight to place your order by the cashier guy . This place need a better way to section of people that ordered and didn't order already. "Jerk Chicken for President!" Call me a biter but i had to write about this place. I lived in Flatbush for about a year and a half and cant say i had any good experience there, but for the last night i was there. Not knowing what good jerk chicken was until i took a bite of this glorious stuff! The words "jerk chicken for president!' were uttered by one of our friends as we ate and ate and ate of these tasty wonderful nicely charred grilled jerk chicken. I don't know if am reviewing just the chicken or the whole joint, but this is their main staple. People line u... no, not line up... people crowd the whole waiting area, as this is a take out place only. Surprisingly enough, no fights ensue while you wait a half hour or so to relay your desire, through drooling lips, to be subjected to the agony of the best flavors you might taste for a very good time... until you come back that is! The chicken pieces while looking black from the grill carry an impressive amount of spices. They are hot, as in spicy hot. The meat is just juicy and tender with flavor through out. Yummm!!! I'm getting some today!!! Cant wait! For sides they carry a fair share of Caribbean goodies, like bake, salt fish, fried plantains (which had ran out that day). All freshly made and tasty to the last bite. Its just a great reason to visit this little spot that you can miss if you don't look properly even while standing next to it. There's a sign on the window that says they are the #1 Jerk spot in BK. A better sign would be "#1 jerk you can get within 20 feet of the subway when your starving and too lazy to go somewhere better." I've tried the jerk chicken twice as well as their curried and stewed chicken. None of it was that great. The jerk chicken was surprisingly bland. There was clearly a lot if spice on the it, but somehow it didn't pop. The stews were similarly nothing to write home about. And to too it all off there was no menu and the staff had the "I could care less if you're here/your attempt to spend money in my establishment t annoys me" attitude that is weirdly pervasive in food places in this otherwise very friendly neighborhood. Best Jerk Chicken in Brooklyn! I first thought this was self-proclaimed but Exquisite has really earned this honor. This is even better than some of the jerk chicken I've had in Jamaica. This place is madhouse in the evenings and always has a long line. Trust me, its worth the wait. I actually found this place on Yelp (thanks everyone!). The jerk chicken is succulent, falls off the bone, well seasoned. They offer spicier jerk sauces on the side, as well as a sweet pineapple mango. Their escoveitch fish is also very good and one of the best I've ever had. Unfortunately, cash only, but they do have an atm on site. Find the line to order and pay, then wait for your number to be called. Then you tell them what sides you want, usually rice and peas and vegetables. But there is also mac and cheese, yellow rice, among other things. Everything is delicious and affordable! A large dinner is about $9-$10, but can be split with another person. Living in the area, you become a bit of a jerk chicken connoisseur. The chicken here is juicy and well seasoned. When ordering a dinner, you get enough food to possibly last you a second meal; even after reheat, the chicken retained its moisture. Super late on this review, as I've been coming here for jerk chicken since like 2005. The best jerk chicken I've had in a restaurant, hands down and I've definitely tried many other restaurants' jerk chicken in NYC and abroad. First time I tried it I wasn't living in the area but happened to be around and was drawn in by the sight of jerk chicken grilling in the window. Moved in the area not long after and saw how popular it is in Flatbush amongst the MANY other places that sell food around here. That was back in 06 and not much has changed in terms of the popularity. That should tell you something about how good it is! So the chicken is great as it comes but I like to add extra jerk sauce and hot sauce because I like my pepper! Other things I've had here (oxtail, salmon, escovitch fish, macaroni and cheese) are on point also. My fiance is a big fan of the salmon dinner. The typical sides (rice and peas, shredded cabbage and carrot, fried plantain) are good but the festival is GREAT (for those who don't know, festival is a large long fried sweet cornmeal dumpling, basically). They do breakfast too - I've only had the oatmeal porridge which is pretty good and sweet! Tips for those who might be trying it for the 1st time in the evening (or whenever else it's busy): Orders are taken in the corner near the servers (when walking in, in the back left corner). You should see a guy standing there taking the orders. If you don't or you aren't sure, just ask whoever's standing around. The line situation tends not to be clear when it's really really busy so you might want to ask people where the line is. Also, when they're calling out numbers, they're calling out the last two digits on the receipt (unless the first of those last two digits is an 0, then they'd call out 101, 504, etc.). Hold onto your receipt! Have cash in hand. Service is good and quick. Only time I've ever waited was when it was extremely busy (check Friday and Saturday evening). All you know is that it's on the corner of Church Ave and Nostrand! :) First of all, the food is first rate quality stuff. Always tasty, always juicy chicken, even the notoriously dry breasts. They cook them on the grill right there, doused in jerk spices until they are filled with flavor and dripping with juice. Of course, you have to add some extra jerk sauce on top for good measure. The food is peppery-hot but awesome. This is clearly their speciality, but they also have some great sides (mac and cheese is a DEFINITE MUST!) and they also serve breakfast. My suggestion for breakfast: the bake and saltfish. Winner every time, without fail. They also serve regular roasted chicken, jerk fish, escovitch fish and several other tasty dishes. This place is ALWAYS crowded, but the people are patient and are willing to wait for their chicken fix!! Fix is the best way to describe it.. I feel like I just got my E and I'm trippin on the jerk chicken train! Woo hoo!! Prices are reasonable. You can get a dinner (rice and peas, small salad and some plantain added) for anywhere between $5 and $8. You can also get the jerk chicken by itself by dark or white meat plus the quantity. If you want all white meat but want a whole chicken worth of it, you can have it your way. Chix by itself starts at $6 for an individual serving to $14 for a whole chicken of white meat. Sides are anywhere from $1.50 to $4. Don't forget your drinks too... standard Jamaican fare like ginger beer is a must. They also sell sorrel, sour sop and other West Indian favorites. It's worth the 2 hour trip to Brooklyn for these guys! Keep in mind there's no seating room -- to go only! Don't even THINK of taking the car. Honestly, we've tried a bunch of places for jerk. A lot of places really. And we've gotten jerk that ranged from meh to pretty good. And then one day I was driving by this place and saw the line outside, so, of course, we had to add this place as a try. So glad we did! The wait was long. Ridiculously long. It takes a few minutes to even get your order in. Then once it's in, expect to wait another 20 minutes for your meal. It will basically take you 30 minutes each and every time, so don't go in hangry. Also, this place is a takeout place so don't expect any ambiance whatsoever. Instead, expect chicken that's skillfully cooked over a fire, along with a complementary sauce that will blow your mind. Well seasoned without being too salty or peppery. Its really a small place so sitting down and eating is impossible but it is an express so that is to be expected. I see the line can get quite hectic in there around busy traffic hours but then again that area is always buzzing with people so there's always a line but like I said earlier its worth the wait time. Exquisite is a takeout Jamaican joint in Flatbush. Just about everybody crowding around the counter at Exquisite is waiting for jerk chicken, which they cook over the grill right behind the counter. Other Jamaican staples are also available, but I've only had their chicken. I seriously pity the reviewer who says that she travels the two hours all the way from Inwood to get some jerk chicken at Exquisite. It's just not that good, especially with all the other choices around. Yes, the chicken is spicier than what you will get at a sit-down restaurant in Manhattan like Negril's or Maroon's, and yes, the skin has a charred flavor from cooking over the grill. But the delicate blending of spice, smoke, salt, and sweetness that is the holy grail of jerk chicken cooking has proved elusory when I have eaten their chicken. First time retuning here to get a small jerk chicken dinner in over 6 years. I was highly disappointed. The quality went down. The rice was clumped and dry and the jerk chicken had no flavor. I even added the sauce they had in the squeeze bottle on top of the counter, before they closed up your meal. That didn't make the food taste better. Sorry to say, but they severely fell off. Okay place. Very small. Only 3 seats so if someone is resting their feet. Forget about sitting down to eat. This place is usually cramped around lunch time or after school hours with school kids. The staff here isn't very inviting, they rush you to place your order. The huge grill in the windows showcasing jerk chicken being freshly made is eye catching but this place is so busy all the time that each piece of chicken doesn't get the time it deserves. The oxtails are cooked to perfection and the serving guy ladles so much for the price that its a sin. I usually hold the veggies, to allow more room for the other food. There are a few chairs by the window, but this spot is take out and they are very busy. The line moves fast, just ask who's on line because it can get confusing as to who's next. Nice little low key spot, a little crowded but isn't everywhere that has good food? Only thing is the music is sooo damn loud in there you can't even hear the lady that's making your plate.. She kept asking me questions about my food through the glass( mind you she is shorter than me and I'm 5'2 ) and i couldn't hear her and she kept getting an attitude like SPEAK UP!
