As a Cajun girl in Austin, my search is never-ending! This is my take on my entire experience Service- Pretty good. Very friendly hostess and server, who made conversation. All staff was attentive to my table. Loved it. Atmosphere: Very packed when I walked in, which is a good sign to me! Live music playing. Overall a good ambiance. Food: - Appetizer: Original boudin was absolutely delicious. Has a spice to it. Very well seasoned. - Entree: Speedy's Catfish- pan seared catfish topped with maque choux on a bed of dirty rice. Overall I enjoyed this dish, but it wasn't the best I've had. The dirty rice wasn't spot on. - Dessert: Pecan praline pistolette...OMG. Just try it. SO delicious. A ball of candied pralines covered in this sweet, warm sauce. Only $5. A real wow factor! A good Cajun place in Austin. I would come back! read more

We've been eating at Evangeline for many years. We thoroughly enjoy Monday nights with Charles Thibodeaux and the Cajun Aces And can't wait for their return to the corner "stage". I am giving a five star review because Evangeline is five star capable and striving to return to the top of their game. They have slugged it out with Covid-19 for fifteen months now. The day they had to shut down inside service, they attended to our need for a Cajun Food Fix at their outdoor patio. But, the stress of the "slow times" had to take a toll. We ate there yesterday and ordered two Hank Williams Dinners "Jambalaya, Crawfish Pie And Filet Gumbo". It looked fine on the plate but the gumbo was lukewarm at best and the jambalaya was cold. The server seemed new and offered to take the food back to the kitchen for reheating. The server's job is to serve the food at correct temperature in the first place. I believe, if you get a cold meal, it ought to be replaced -- not reheated. No offer was made to comp a dessert or anything. We did not get knives with our silverware. Cutting through hard crust with a fork? I'll bring my own knife from now on. Wishing everyone the best in restoring Evangeline to its pre-pandemic excellence. We'll be back! A disappointing entry into Texas, straight off the plane. The woman who answered the phone was incredibly friendly and helpful as I was experiencing bad service and having trouble hearing her, but this was the only bright spot. The place was absolutely packed to the gills with no attempt whatsoever at distancing and people running around everywhere. When we got home (not far), we opened the package to find floppy, mealy, room-temperature fries with the texture of wet rubber bands. And the po'boys? The catfish one... when I opened it, I thought I'd been pranked. The amount of catfish can best be described as a sheet of catfish - as in, the thickness of a bedsheet. It was more condiment than main event, and added absolutely no flavor to the 'sandwich', which, can it really be called a sandwich when it's just bread with a few tomatoes and shreds of lettuce? At least the crawfish one had (slightly) more crawfish in it, but the breading was flavorless and the meat itself not much more than texture. read more

Went here on a date on Tuesday. My date suggested this and I was open since I've never had Creole/Cajun before. I got there around 730 and it was packed! Luckily my date got there early and he got seated 5 minutes before I got there. First, theres a lot of seating and once you walk in they have a live band playing. I loved it. It was noisy but not too loud where you couldn't hear anyone so it was perfect. It was his birthday so they embarrassed him and sang Happy Birthday. We got the Fried Oysters and Frogs Legs. I love seafood, not such a fan of fried stuff but it was ohhh so light. We put hot Sauce on it. Bow the frogs legs, never had. But of man, they were delicious. I had no clue frogs legs were so tender and moist. I had chicken wings but these things were a million times better than chicken. My date got a sort of Spicy Garlic Pasta with Shrimp. He gave me a shrimp which was great and not greasy. I scooped up some of the sauce since he told me it was spicy and garlicky (my two favorite things) and it had great flavor. I had the Crawfish Etouffee. I got it with Dirty Rice for an extra charge, figured why not. I think it was good but I wasnt wowed. I added some hot sauce and liked it. Great service and the whole restaurant had a great Louisiana vibe! We were really excited to have some Cajun food but sadly the food was missing the normal Cajun seasoning that my husband is accustomed for the fried catfish. The red beans were ok and we noticed that there was very little sausage and the server quickly gave us another bowl with sausage. The alligator tails were also a little bland... consistency was good but just missing taste. I had crawfish etouffee was seasoned well but was watery. The server gave me a little more rice to help. The venue was packed and we really wanted to rate them a little higher since they were all nice. read more

Manager verbally accosted me on the way back from the restroom, in the hallway (out of the view of patrons) for poor feedback on our server. Upon return to my table no servers would come to our table. When asking for the email address of the manager, another server very rudely gave it turned her back and walked off. We will not be coming back. Part of the negative feedback regarding our server included asking for bread, which the menu said came with the meal. She said that it would be extra and the menu is out of date. She rudely returned with a tiny piece of bread. There is more, however it's not worth it. This establishment does not value customers. If a manager is allowed to verbally attack a customer and the staff follows her lead then there's really no point in mentioning anything further. Sadly we have enjoyed this restaurant for the last 15 years...on a positive note we will find another cajun place that's customer oriented. read more

Evangeline's is the place that we treat ourselves to, our little dining reward. It's the place we take out-of-town guests to when we want them to have a meal that they will remember and talk about. New Orleans is an 8-hour drive away but this restaurant serves the same great food and it's just a few miles from home. We've enjoyed the Boudin sausage and fried alligator. The jambalaya and gumbo are great, too, although I wish that the portions were larger. We had a guest who had a cosmic experience with their stuffed pork chop. Last night we finished a great catfish meal (also try their grilled catfish -- not traditional but what a wonderful surprise) with a great desert of a warm pecan praline pistolette. That was so good that we bought another to take home. read more

My friend and I found ourselves here on a Tuesday evening before 7pm. The place was loud inside and had a few seats available outside. The night was a decent temperature so we opted for outside so we could hear each other talk. It appeared there was a band that plays around 7pm. They had just started to get set up when we had arrived. I scanned the menu and ordered a Abita turbo dog beer. It was a bit of a heavier beer but delicious all the same. Louisiana's finest. Due to the crowed we waited a little bit longer for our meal but we hardly noticed due to our conversation and people watching. A very interesting crowd to say the least. My grilled shrimp po boy with evangeline sauce came out with a side of french fries. My friend ordered the alligator sauce picante. My po boy was lacking in flavor and just seemed plain. I was very disappointed since the reviews were high for this place. I tried a bite of my friend's meal, alligator picante, and was it was very flavorful and spicy. My fries were okay but I think I would have liked the chips with evangeline sauce better. Anyway, I doubt I would eat here again but I could see myself maybe checking them out in the future because of the band. read more

I miss the soft shell crab po-boy so much I can't think of a good metaphor. Their Evangeline sauce is good on every po boy. PS. GET THE ROAST BEEF po-boy though. Then take the afternoon off. Shrimp pasta was basically a microwave dinner. One of the worst meals I've paid for in Austin.

I was really excited to try this place, it has been on my list to go to for quite some time. I live up North so I rarely find myself down South. However, I made a special trip down South to get some Cajun food. I'm beyond in love with Boudin, so of course I ordered the Boudin. It was good, I feel like that is hard to mess up on. If you have it on your menu for a Cajun restaurant you already winning with me. I got the burger lunch special though on the recommendation on the server and I definitely do not have the same idea on it as her. It was probably my mistake to not get something cajun here, but it was a very terrible burger. It was dry and just not appetizing. Seemed like a frozen patty to me. I would not recommend you go eat that. The fries were just as bad too, so stay away from both. I also ordered a side of onion rings and it was okay, they are like a take on shoestring onion rings, not bad but also not the best onion rings I've ever eaten. I wouldn't say go out of your way for those. However, the dessert is what is giving this place three stars and the service. Although the server and I didn't feel the same way on the burger, she was extremely nice and friendly and attentive. Back to the dessert, the Pistolette, is bomb! You must get that for sure if you find yourself here!! It was amazing! Totally worth the wait for that. This place is located in a strip mall so you have to fight other shop goers for parking spots, but it shouldn't be too bad, the place did get very crowded for a weekend lunch, so you might or might not have a wait. There is indoor and outdoor seating. The decor is very Lousiana-y. read more

I have been eating at Evangeline's since it opened in 2003 because it opened the same time I moved here from Boston. My husband played bass there for many different bands. While going through chemo, staff made food I could actually eat. It was a community and it's my hope this review reaches Curtis. I moved before the pandemic and this made it stressful for me to just get across town. Now we're in an increasing struggle for all restaurants. I had seafood gumbo with one shrimp and six oysters, the roux was bitter from scorching. My fries were cold. I have developed a hen egg allergy so the breaded fried food I can't eat. And I can't trust cream sauces either. That's limited choices. I wish Curtis would create a small smart menu, and raise his prices. Yup. Raise the price. If that had been my first time at Evangeline's, I would not go back. read more

This is one of the best creole restaurants I have tried in my travels. The frog legs are bigger than the chicken wings from many wings place. The gator was fantastic. WhT a hidden gem! When you step inside it feels like any great spot in Baton Rouge. The service was great the food was awesome and the beer was ice cold! If that's not enough try the gumbo that comes topped with a whole crab claw so you know the flavors took time to craft as well.
