I've walked past Lavaca Street bar so many times but never knew they sold seafood! We were craving some shrimp and found out through maps that they basically have an entire restaurant in the bar. I was so excited since the location is nearby and they had a great selection. The service was great & the food came out fast considering the amount of people in line. Unfortunately, I was not impressed by the food. The amount of food vs the price of the food provided did not make any sense to me. The Cajun corn was honestly just nasty. The blackened shrimp had a decent taste but the "buffalo shrimp" was literally just fried shrimp with some dabs of Frank's hot. The only thing I'd recommend from here would be the jalapeño hush puppies. They were tasty & there were plenty. Their service was great and I enjoyed the overall feel of the bar, however, I would not choose to eat here again. I'll definitely return for some drinks and a football game though! read more

Came here after seeing how amazing their crawfish nachos looked online and the great reviews that people wrote. However my friends and I were extremely disappointed with the food and service. The blackened crawfish was overly salty, we could not keep eating it without feeling the need to drink water after each bite. Don't get me wrong, the portions are generous ($21) especially considering the price we paid but I would not recommend this to anyone. The seasoning overpowered the crawfish and it was not enjoyable. As you can see in the picture, we barely made a dent and mind you, we do NOT like to waste food. We are not even picky eaters but each bite was pure salt with no contrast in flavors. We also ordered cocktail fried oysters but they were mostly covered in breading and the oysters were tiny so I can't justify the $20 price tag. The only thing i could recommend is the shrimp poboy. My quesadilla was really greasy. I asked for light cheese. It was so much cheese, it was oozing out. I ate the two end slices & threw away the rest. My stomach couldn't take all the grease & cheese. Turf N Surf is pretty expensive for a "po' boy" shop, but I do enjoy their sandwiches. They're pretty big! The blackened fish is very flavorful. They stuff their sandwiches with crunchy vegetables. And they have 5 or 6 hot sauces (these are po' boys, so I go with the classic Louisiana Hot Sauce). When I first visited, I was taken aback by the prices - all in w/ tax & tip well over $20 for most proteins - but the tilapia option was much cheaper, so I went with that. And I was not disappointed! I think blackened was the right way to go too, but they do have fried and grilled options. The blackened spices add a nice amount of flavor to the white fish, one reason why I don't think you really need the more expensive versions. The bread isn't noticeable, but it stands up to a fairly moist sandwich, so it does it's job. On top of the fish, is a heaping pile of slaw. lettuce, tomato, onion & pickles. Always served with lime, which is necessary to contrast the creamy slaw. Choose your hot sauce from the many options, and your tastebuds will be occupied for a little while They also serve 2 sauces on the side, but honestly, I don't really like them. I suggest ordering w/ out sauce on the side, they're not needed since you've already got your hot sauce of choice. The service is pretty quick, so I'm happy there. There's also never a line when I go - usually 2-3pm - so that's a plus. And if you have time for a pint, you're already right there in Lavaca Street Bar The interior is pretty dark & divey, but they do have a small backyard area, so if you need some fresh air, just head that way. read more

I love crossing off places in my "Want to Go" bookmarks. I especially loved crossing off Turf N Surf Po' Boy because it's been in my bookmarks for over 4 or 5 years now. I came with my team yesterday because my manager raved about it, and wow. It is so delicious. It's a little hole-in-the-wall on Lavaca Street, and I've definitely passed by it a lot of times but didn't realize it was right there. We all ordered the blackened ahi tuna taco plate with Cajun fries as our side, and everything was genuinely so freaking good. The fries were perfectly crispy and seasoned. The fish was really tender and moist. They fill up the tacos so I can only eat one and I'll get full. Even the salad and the ranch dressing were phenomenal. I definitely want to come again because this is going to be one of my favorite spots in Austin. There is so much food as well, so the price is definitely worth it. Unfortunately had to post this. This review is not a dig on workers or service - only on the quality of ribeye. Staff & service was good. Been coming here for years for their blackened ribeye nachos. Always looked forward to it. It's been a hot minute since we've been here but last night the meat quality was horrible. Very tough and chewy-almost like a sirloin. If customers are paying $25 + tax & tip, you would expect it to be at least edible. Didn't even finish 1/3 of it - that bad. Occupying the kitchen inside Lavaca, Turf n Surf Po' Boy serves up some great seafood with strong Cajun flavors that will transport you straight to NOLA! Open late, they're great for post-bar munchies. The menu could get a little overwhelming at first glance, but the variety is well worth it. When the weather is good, it's nice to just stop by and order through their sidewalk window and eat at one of the tables outside. I'm personally a fan of their Naughty Cat Poboy, which is blackened catfish and bacon with all the fixings - it's just seasoned so well and really hits the spot. I also suggest getting their Fried Jumbo Gulf Shrimp, which are beyond fresh. A word of warning, though: their sandwiches could get REAL messy and start falling apart, with coleslaw getting all over the place, so be prepared! read more

Yeah this place goes absolutely crazy. Like the portions are so insane you wonder how they even make money. They were churning and burning out meals during an extremely packed UT game and everything came out quickly and well-made. Service at the window is also always so friendly it makes me want to get in my car and drive straight to NOLA. The red beans and rice alone made me nostalgic for the boot. The blackened chicken nachos fully satiated three starving women and that's saying a lot. Honestly I've tried a lot of dishes on their menu and not one of them disappoints. We tried the chicken parm which essentially seemed like two very large chicken breasts cut into 2 pieces each and was probably about a lb of meat. If you're looking for traditional thinner chicken parm this is a not it, but great value if you want a mound of chicken. The grilled shrimp was a more reasonable portion size and cooked well. I can't say a lot about this Austin favorite, but we had a hankering for hush puppies and very few places in the area serve them, which-with the help of fellow Yelpers-led us here. Two options for ordering: outside at the order window, which accompanies a small patio, and inside Lavaca (restaurant) with a full bar, pool table and an entirely separate menu. We can only comment on the hush puppies, of course. They are jalapeño hush puppies and pack a serious punch, which we rounded off with a round from the bar. They were cooked perfectly and came with a roulade for dipping. Service was friendly and fast. Inside offered a nice reprieve from the Austin heat, and the music was awesome. But the chips were way better than store bought, tasted like they might have been fried up fresh from corn tortillas earlier that day. A big vat of mild red salsa came with, but wasn't that necessary since the queso was the main focus. Fried Catfish Po' Boy: A generous portion of catfish with a grainy batter and deep fried nicely. Loved the soft bread, lightly toasted on the inside, and the sour pickles. However, they went a bit crazy with lettuce and coleslaw. At times it felt like I had a fish salad on a roll. For a bar food, this place is pretty good! The food seems fresh and it's a fun place to watch sports games with TVs throughout and outside on the patio. School was in session when we visited but we didn't feel out of place among the college crowd as there were several other parties a little older than the typical college age :) Got the grouper tacos and Mac and cheese. I am always surprised to find grouper outside of the immediate gulf area but these were very fresh and flavorful and didn't taste frozen. The Mac and cheese was very homemade tasting! I ordered two Mahi Mahi tacos. The Negative - tortilla was rock hard, way too much lettuce and sauce. Positive - descent size fillet of Mahi Mahi. But I only ate the fish as the Taco was a joke. I took it to the guy at the counter and gave him my critique and he could care less. Not to mention I paid $47.00 for 4 mediocre tacos and a Dr Pepper. I have not been here since before the pandemic and they still had a location at the domain. Let me tell ya, I couldn't be happier I stopped by and it was just as good if not better than I remembered. It's a bit pricey but you get a lot of food and it's mouthwatering delicious. I stopped by for lunch with a few friends and they were super happy with the recommendation. We orders guac as well as queso fries. The guac was freshly made, and better than most Tex max spots. It could have used some salt and lime but I was able to add that myself. On top of that it comes with a big side of salsa and fresh chips. They are not stingy with the chips! The waffle fries were perfectly crispy with the yummy and gooey queso on top. I kind of wish I had a plate in front of me now. I ordered blacked tilapia tacos. It comes with two but we had so much appetizers that I could only eat one. Told them we weren't those guys and were walking away when the front of house guy insisted we could order and they'd be happy to make us some food so we did. The Food was good. We ordered take out and picked it up at the window. I'm from New Orleans and my seafood expectations can be very high. Living in Texas I have trained my pallet to understand Texas seafood...lol. Therefore, the catfish was authentic catfish and not the foolery of swai. I liked the fries with the Cajun seasoning and the Cajun seasoned wings as well. The shrimp was not what I expected. They are on the menu as jumpo shrimp. They aren't jumbo at all. Their butterflied which I am assuming maybe that's why they are called jumbo. Now when I see jumbo I am expecting jumbo not large butterflied shrimp. I do believe they could use seasoning on their batter for both the shrimp and catfish however with a little tartar sauce it was satisfying. I also had the cilantro fries. The fries were good but no cilantro flavor‍. Slaw comes with the plates and when I tell you the slaw was the best tasting part. I could have eaten a plate of that slaw and been satisfied. The hush puppies said jalapeno but it was really just hush puppies. They taste like normal hush puppies from the freezer and dropped in oil. I make my own hush puppies‍. With that being said, it's a cool spot and I got a peak of the inside which looked like a place I would hang out. A little hole-in-the-wall on Lavaca Street. Great for grabbing lunch, but beware - portions are huge and the food is heavy! You could be taking a nap in the afternoon if you're not careful. We got two po'boys with fish. The fish was cooked to perfection! The veggies and sauces were nice too, overall I felt like the flavors were simple enough to let the flavors of the ingredients shine through.
