Shrimp etouffee & Fried Catfish (couldn't wait and had to take a bite)
    David D.

Love this place. Tuesday & Thursday etouffee can't be beat. Need to get here on Monday for red beans and rice. Fried catfish is crispy with great flavor. Banana pudding is different from typical versions. They whip the pudding part so it is light and airy and the nilla wafers are crisp. If you want some NOLA staples, this is a great option.

I love this little new food truck. I've been there three times and every meal has been awesome. My first trip I had grilled fish with the best Mac and cheese and cornbread I've ever had in my life! The second time I had a huge shrimp Po boy, and today I had etouffee. I thought it was just going to be the etouffee, but it came with shrimp and a catfish fillet! They have a limited menu everyday so call ahead or check out their Instagram page for the day's meal.

Amazing. Amazing and Amazing! There is not too many times I write a review while I'm in the car. I had to come and show this food truck some LOVE! We were headed to a BBQ place when we decided to try Err Thing New Orleans. We ordered the fried catfish, gumbo, shrimp étouffée, red beans and rice, it came with a piece of cornbread and a garlic toast. The service was great and the food came out quick. Everything was FLAVORFUL!! The catfish was definitely catfish. I'm not the only one that realized that some restaurants switch catfish for Swai.If you know your seafood you know what I'm talking about. The fish was season perfectly, it was moist and fresh. The étouffée came with huge shrimps and again very flavorful. The gumbo was full of chunks of shrimp, and the roux was made with love. The cornbread was sweet and sticky! The red beans and rice was amazing!!! Don't walk but run and come get you some authentic New Orleans, Cajun food. You will not be disappointed!!

This is the best gumbo I have had in Austin. Sorry to the rest of those places trying their best, but this is the real deal. The potato salad also gets a passing grade and as a Louisiana girl I might be even more picky about potato salad than gumbo.

Amazing. I grabbed the bowl of chicken and sausage gumbo. It comes with a drink....you're going to need that drink. Let me tell you it is STRAIGHT out of New Orleans. The aroma through the container was so pleasantly strong. Once I got back to work I didn't even get out the car for fear my coworkers would disturb this blessing of gumbo and cornbread. I just sat in the car and ate. Mind you with no music. This was the best. Oh...I have finally found better lemonade than CFA. It's here!!! Friendly and just all around good people. I will be back.

Delicious shrimp po-boy with excellent cornbread included. Comes with lemonade and chips as well. Great spot if you're in the mood for delicious food from a casual location.

You can really taste the love that went into all this food. This is a food truck right across from HEB mueller in that swimming pool parking lot. She's only open on the weekends and her food can be ordered on DoorDash but she has more menu items in person than on DoorDash. I online ordered and picked up 3 different orders. 2 of them were not ready and she had me wait in my car and she brought them out to me so I didn't melt in the heat. Now the important stuff the menu... Ok who knew you could fry ribs?!?! They were on point. 4 to an order. Ribs were still moist, the batter had a crunch, and the meat fell off the bone. The dirty rice was the best dirty rice I've ever eaten. It was loaded up with seafood The smothered pork chops were 2 to an order and 2 sides served on a bed of white rice. Also very moist and great flavor, the Mac n cheese was not runny which I personally hate when it's just a runny mess, the fried cabbage also had a great flavor and it was still crunchy. The jerk chicken had great flavor but it was ordered as mild (not by me) and it definitely needed the heat/spice,the jumbalaya side was also tasty We also got the hot Cheetos boudin balls (I forgot to take a picture) they were huge and not spicy at first bite the heat sneaks up on you. The strawberry crunch cake was a big slice and reminded me of strawberry cake doughnut but that banana pudding was also probably the best banana pudding I've ever eaten. I felt all the portions were huge and prices were fair. This definitely not a food truck to sleep on. I've been told she makes great oxtails but they sell out fast.

I was impressed with the chicken fried steak and the complimentary corn muffins and sweet potato biscuits. I even got a slice of sweet potato pie once near Thanksgiving. But Hoover's closed down the S.A. restaurant a few months later. No biggie. I'll just go dine at the original one in Austin. A few months later on a rainy and ugly day in Austin in March 2006 I rode the bus from downtown to here. The restaurant was huge and roomy and I got seated but had to wait a long time for a waiter and left as soon as I saw people that got seated after me got served first. A few months later I rode the bus to here and got seated and was served by a young white guy who seemed exhausted and wanted to be anywhere except work. 20 years later I found out the sad news that Hoover's last day in business would be today May 31,2026. I drove here from San Antonio and noticed how much the restaurant has changed. It got smaller inside. Maybe the 2020 pandemic had something to do with that. I got seated and waited on by a friendly black waiter and ordered an Arnold Palmer and a cup of gumbo for an appetizer which was good, hot and satisfying. For the entree I got the chicken fried steak with black eyed peas and buttered spinach. The sides were okay but the CFS was a bit tough when I cut into it. For dessert, a slice of chocolate cream pie was the perfect way to end the meal. I came here one last time last week and got here earlier than I had arrived last time. I was waited on by a Hispanic waiter who seemed friendly but I had a weird feeling he was staring at me weird whenever he left my table. For appetizer I ordered a small cornbread and 2 biscuit muffins. They no longer served the free corn muffins and sweet potato biscuits like they used to serve 20 years ago. I got the Jamaican jerk chicken and a hot sausage link with cowboy beans and coleslaw. The beans were great and the slaw was okay. The perk chicken seemed a bit dry but good and the sausage was good but not as spicy as I expected. The cornbread was good and so were the biscuit muffins that were big for just 99 cents a pop. I ordered the banana pudding for dessert and that was a good conclusion to my last meal here at Hoover's. Hoover's Cooking is an Austin original that will be greatly missed. I hope whatever restaurant that moves into this soon to be vacant space will serve good food at an affordable price and won't be like the other places on Manor that serve outrageous prices for food that is just mediocre or subpar.
