I also found something disgusting inside my green dragon roll and am not coming back again. Two stars are because it used to be good, and the noodle place is decent, but I give it a 2/10 for the new sushi and its sanitation issue. I'm a fan when it comes to certain aspects. Construction be damned, this is pretty much the only consistent food I can get around the med campus day round. To be honest, most of the food will get old super quick or is overpriced. The sandwiches, noodle bar and sushi bar are definitely better than mediocre, maybe just over average, but will get monotonous after a while. There is a decent amount of change within the hot food bar - which will change between breakfast, lunch, and dinner menus even day to day - but the problem is how expensive it comes out. The only way you don't break the bank is if you get a box of nothing but leaves; otherwise a solid plate of everything you want is easily double digits. I think the only really solid deal is ironically the bar. Basically an Applebee's that doesn't suck. The sandwiches and other entrees are mostly from the sandwich bar so don't be alarmed at the lack of prices. But everyone seems to love the appetizers that comes out around dinner time - stuff like boneless chicken wings and mozzarella sticks are cheaper here than any restaurant in Glover or M Street. That combined with a decent tap, I'll take that and a Guinness most nights. read more

Best place to eat within walking distance of Medstar Georgetown hospital. Even with the construction. Okay, the Faculty Lounge in the hotel/conference center is really "the best" food. But it's also really "the most expensivest" food. Sushi, Thai, buffet, sandwiches, Italian, they got it, and I've tried it all. All good. Yes, I eat there a lot. Sad thing is, I have a family member who's medical bills are likely paying for a good portion of that new building going up where the parking lot used to be. Plus, for those of us who are card-carrying members of Alcoholics Obvious, they have a bar that serves good beers, wine, and hard drinks. After a f***ing stressful day dealing with a sick family member and the batsh*t-crazy in-laws, this is a good place to unwind. Seriously, my mother-in-law got her @ss royally chewed out by an anonymous passer-by for her abusive behavior. You know who you are, and you know the incident I'm talking about -- I wish I could buy you a meal and a drink (or two or three). I owe you. Find me and I will absolutely treat you to food and inebriation at Epicurean. Do check hours in the summer! They close at 9pm I think, and the bar has last call and closes even earlier, especially when there's not much business. On summertime weekdays, I try to eat dinner there no later than 6 or 7pm. Weekends, earlier. At least arrive early, so you can sit at the bar and drink. And keep buying drinks if there's not much business, so the barkeep can make a living. Also, walk the buffet line, make sure the hot food is decent-hot and not dying from being under the heat lamp for four hours. Salad bar food stays fresher longer if you eat between lunch and dinnertime. The chicken wings stay surprisingly moist and don't burn-dry under the heat lamp. And they're decently good. I've taken a chance many times, and I've not been disappointed yet. Salisbury steak and anything that has a sauce/gravy - just be careful. most sauces and gravies form a 'skin' within about a half-hour of sitting under the heat lamp. ...check and make sure that skin isn't a callous yet. read more

Pretty decent food but expensive on some ends. I'm an employee of GU and frequent here when I don't feel like cooking since it's close or receive a food voucher from work. I normally get the beyond burger combo with fries and a drink. It's a little inconsistent depending on who's cooking which can be annoying, but when it's on point, I'm super content. I've only tried the hot bar for breakfast and they have really good croissant french toast. The hot bar definitely adds up though, you could easily spend $18 in this place for one meal. I also have had the noodle station before and wasn't disappointed. The pizza is subpar unless you're really hungry and don't care what pizza should taste like. Epicurean is an interesting joint - they do asian dishes, sushi, sandwiches, they have a massive salad bar, and in the morning a fairly substantial breakfast buffet. There is also a full service bar here to get your drink on! I arrived very early at Georgetown University Hospital for my spinal appointment. So I ducked in here to hang out, grab some caffeine and a bite. I hit the breakfast buffet and created a plate of breakfast goodies: sausage gravy over biscuits, a hash brown, one pork sausage patty, one turkey sausage patty, a couple of slices of bacon, and a scrambled egg mixture with sausage, cheese, and who knows what else! You can also get coffee and espresso drinks. There is plenty of seating here. I'll be stopping in here during future visits to see the Doc! read more

I just started working for MGUH last week. I had food from the hot bar for consecutive 3 days and was pretty satisfied. It is pretty expensive (even having come from Manhattan, NY) but I was willing to let that pass for consistent, high quality food. However, today will be the last day I eat here. I am currently sitting at the sushi bar and while throroughly observing one of the sushi chefs, I noticed he is not meeting standard hygiene precautions while handling our food. For the past 20 minutes I've been sitting here, he has not once changed his gloves. The guy is CONSTANTLY working on sushi, then holding pens, then touching order forms, and bending down and pulling/pushing all drawers located beneath him. It's quite appalling and I've already lost my appetite but thankfully my sushi was made from the other chef next to him (who is only handling food). This place is super-strange, but in a good way. It's a bar, a sushi restaurant, a pizza and sandwich deli, and a cafeteria-style salad bar and buffet all in one. The amazing part is that it all kind of works even though that makes no sense and really shouldn't. First this place is across the parking lot from the Georgetown Hospital Bles building and is where you should eat if you can while staying in and/or visiting the hospital both because the food is good and because there isn't a traditional hospital cafeteria and Georgetown. On to the actual food. There's sort of 4 spaces in the place. On the left as you walk in is a bar--I didn't eat or drink there, so I can't comment on it. On the right is Japanese/sushi restaurant and I didn't eat there either, but it keeps more traditional hours than the rest of the place and seemed to be well-trafficked, so it must be decent. Then in the middle is a big checkout register and a deli that makes sandwiches and pizza. I had a baja (southwest chicken) sandwich and it was OK, but not great. The pizza on the other hand was really yummy. It's not going to win any awards and it's not really Sicilian, Neapolitan, New York or Chicago style, but more like really, really good lunchroom style. I really liked all 3 by-the-slice options. In the way back is a hot and cold buffet as well as a salad bar that's all sold by the pound. It's a bit pricier than you might like, but also surprisingly good. The curry dishes were all good, the brussel sprouts and beets were great. It was also a great way to get some healthy eating in. This 5/5 review is only for the sushi bar. The two main chefs are exceptionally friendly and talented, the food is always fresh and artfully prepared, and the offerings include both standard sushi rolls and creative pairings. The sought-after seats at the sushi bar are definitely the best - where you can watch the chefs prepare each plate masterfully. Unfortunately, the sushi bar is only open M-F (but the chefs are so friendly, you wouldn't want them to have to work weekends). The specials here are an exceptional draw -- 1. The lunch special: for $9.95, you can get a miso soup, salad, and either a) a california roll and 5 pieces of nigiri or b) 2 of the simpler rolls (think spicy tuna, salmon avocado, eel cucumber). This deal runs from 11-2:30 and is tough to turn down. 2. The sushi happy hour: from 3-7pm all nigiri are $1 per piece (usually an order is 2 pieces for $4-6) -- and just as fresh as during peak times. This is a great way to try some more far out options (squid, baby octopus) or make a great dinner on the favorites (salmon, yellow tail, tuna). 3. The fancy rolls are worth the price: the volcano, viagra, and las vegas rolls are fantastic. The non-sushi service is relatively slow (I've had to refill my own water several times and the check takes longer than the food), but the casual ambiance makes this a non-issue. One thing to note: it's on Georgetown's main campus, right next to the medical center, so its main customers are doctors, students, and patients. It's absolutely packed during lunch hours but also offers a quiet place (The restaurant also offers made-to-order sandwiches, some better than others, and a per-pound buffet for each meal. They have standard and high-end snacks as well - chips, protein bars, sodas, coffee, desserts. And a full-service bar. The recently opened noodle bar seems plain and over-priced, though I have not yet ventured to that corner of the joint.) read more

I am obsessed with Epicurean. Not because it's reasonably priced (it's not)...and not just because I live right across the street (I do)...but because it is an amalgamation of some wonderful things that aren't as easily accessible. First, the sushi bar. Happy hour (4-7pm) $1 nigiri. I ate a ton of hamachi here the other day while I got some studying in. Salad / hot food bar: expensive but some of the food is delicious. (some of it is like panda express...which is tasty in its own way, but you'll be paying way more than you'd like for panda express) Breakfast: 3 different types of gravy. enough said. The bar: flat screens, free wifi, and happy hour half off draft beers. Done and done. You'll probably find me here grabbing coffee in the morning before an exam, studying on a saturday morning over haribo gummies, at happy hour of course, and ducking in here late at night for some gourmet popcorn. read more

I was a student at Georgetown, and am now an employee of the Georgetown Medical center. I couldn't afford this place as a student. It was a nice alternative when you didn't want to walk to M street and you were tired of the cafeteria, but it's not cheap. The food is hit or miss; I've had delicious food and terrible food. Now as an employee, I go because it's close and as my "I can't think of anything else to have for lunch" place. It has ample seating that tends to be taken up by students with their laptops (funny how I never noticed that as a student myself). I rarely see people actually drinking at the bar, or at the sushi area. It's a shame, since their sushi is actually decently priced and pretty good. read more

I've been spending quite a bit of time in and out of the hospital lately, requiring quite a bit of a sustenance to keep functioning normally. My go to? Epicurean! Something I would've never expected to find on a hospital campus! It's part Hibachi/Sushi Bar, part cafeteria with a huge salad bar and hot food line, then a full service bar - get this, WITH A DISCO BALL! They also have ice cream and serve Illy coffee. Seriously, it's like the Disney World of eateries! I haven't had the sushi yet, but I've enjoyed the hot food line and salad bar several times. Their Kung Pao Chicken is actually my favorite - moreso than any Chinese restaurant - and it really packs a punch so if you can't stand the heat, get your hands off my chicken! Tonight, they had brisket, which I was iffy on but hot dayum, it knocked my socks off! If you're not a protein lover, their steamed veggies with garlic butter are nomz - especially the broccoli. I'm not kidding you when I say load up on the broccoli. They also have delicious green beans that are just right w/ a slight crisp and crunch when you bite into them. On the salad bar, they have a plethora of good eats, including caprese, (which, seriously, when have you ever seen that at a buffet?!) grilled eggplant, asparagus, shrimp cocktail, and antipasti in addition to all of the traditional fare. I only like to stop by so I don't look like a damn carnivore, but if you're of the healthy, more well-rounded meal type, you couldn't find a better salad bar to compliment your entree! read more

Being that it is located on the campus of Georgetown University/the Medical campus you definitely see a mix/variety of individuals who come through here. But one thing is definitely consistent and that is the quality of food delivered, whether it be the fresh sandwiches made to order, the ily coffee (to die for), the smoothies, or the amazing salad/hot bar with varying ethnic foods that change weekly (?), probably less frequently than weekly but still good! I stopped by while visiting a sick friend in the hospital. I was surprised by the variety and freshness of the food. The salad bar was well stocked with sweet and vibrant fruit. I had strawberries, mango, watermelon, kiwi, and pineapple. All were extremely fresh. I also sampled the plantains, and grilled chicken wings. They were full of flavor. Everyone in my party of 3 enjoyed their meal and we would definitely return. The food was very tasty but as the price is charged by weight, my fruit salad was more than $11 and would've cost half as much elsewhere. When I think of "doctors", three key things come to mind: Noah Wylie and what happened to his career, cold stethoscopes, and booze. So you can only imagine my surprise and confusion when I met up with Helen P, a long time friend that I've never met in person (oh Interwebz, you will bring about world peace some day!), for drinks at Georgetown Hospital campus (where she was attending a conference)...and couldn't find a bar. No, really. We walked all over the Conference Center, thinking, surely there will be a bar at *Conference Center*. Then we migrated over to the hotel. Again, no bar. Finally, breaking down in desperation, we were told that there was a bar just across the parking lot...which turned out to be the world's largest most incomprehensible parking lot in the entire world (Escher could not have done a better job), to stumble into Epicurean - a cute little bar that shares space with a Japanese buffet. Seriously, did we end up in Utah or something? Because it shouldn't be this hard to find a bar on a university hospital campus. However, once we arrived, I'm glad we did. The bartender was just attentive enough to make sure that our drinks were filled, but not so attentive as to interrupt girly giggling and gossiping. After a while, the bar started to fill up with doctors and nurses still in their scrubs...but looking nothing like the cast of Gray's Anatomy or House. I would have been more disappointed except that by the end of the night, after several drinks, a gigantor basket of fries and a basket of onion rings...the bill only came out to be $24. This is in Georgetown. Seriously? Perhaps this is why there aren't more bars on this campus...they've all been driven out of business by Epicurean's awesome prices. Score! This place is overpriced, but it's the best place to eat on Georgetown's campus, unfortunately, so I came here a LOT in between classes to get food. I've only been to the deli bar one time to get the reuben ($7.25), one of my favorite sandwiches. There's a generous portion of corned beef but they do NOT serve it with russian dressing. I had to go to the salad bar and put it on myself. Fail. The sandwich was also overly salty. The buffet looks good at first (especially compared to our university's dining hall), but the food is often overcooked, and therefore dry, tough, burnt, and not that tasty. Their lamb curry is NOTHING like lamb curry. The lamb is sooooooo tough, almost unchewable. Get little portions of everything and see what's tolerable. All of their rice is stale. Their singapore noodles was extremely bland and the noodles were dry. Their lamb burgers are pretty good. Their chicken/beef/shrimp quesadillas are a bit sub-par; they're overcooked, burnt, and tough to chew. Their soups are extremely salty. When they start serving their "homemade spiced cider" by the cash register, don't get it! It tasted like ass. I hate throwing things away, but I just had to throw this out because it tasted like liquid fart juice. Basically, this restaurant doesn't know how to make food. The salad bar is marginally better. My favorite is the fresh fruit. When I come here, I mostly get their fresh mango slices, strawberries, and kiwi because GU's dining hall is lacking in fresh fruit. I banged my head against the wall when the total came out to $10 for some mangoes and strawberries, but I needed fresh fruit and didn't have time to go grocery shopping. Their grape leaves are also ok. Everything at the buffet and salad bar is priced by weight, with the most expensive time being dinner, of course (I think it's $7.99/lb for dinner, maybe more?) So try and choose foods that are not too heavy weight-wise, and your total shouldn't be too big. It is overpriced though, for the quality of food they serve. The most bang-for-your-buck meal would be a large salad: low weight, high nutrition, low price. Sushi bar is ok, definitely better than their buffet and deli. The sushi is fresher on some days than others. If you come here, definitely take advantage of their sushi lunch special (11:00 am-2:30 pm) which includes your choice of 2 rolls (I always get salmon&avocado and spicy tuna), salad, and miso soup all for $9.95. If you're looking for a tasty splurge, get the Volcano Roll (masago spicy mayo sauce baked w/ spicy tuna & salmon scallop on top, $11.95). They heat it up in a toaster oven and it comes out all warm and melty. It's a little salty (and totally Americanized), but it's still close to mouthgasm status. Their coffee is better than Fartbucks (and way cheaper!), so come here to get your caffeine fix. Epicurean is open every day from 6:30am-10:30 pm. Since it's located next to the GU hospital, I see a lot of med students in here drinking coffee and grabbing a quick bite in between shifts. Epicurean also sells a lot of gourmet snack foods (chips, salsas, popcorn, cookies), chocolate bars, teas, hot sauces, honey, etc. Funny how Epicurean tries to be so many things at once! If you're not affiliated to GU in any way, please don't go out of your way to come here! It's like a slightly better Panda Express, like Panda Express 2.0 or something. Right idea - wrong approach. The place sort of has an identity crisis. There's a totally satisfactory bar, coupled with an over-priced buffet/grill, coupled with convenience store, coupled with an awkward sushi bar and hibachi restaurant. Add indifferent service. Shake, and serve cold. The bar is great, especially considering the other bar on campus is such a complete failure. You can get yourself *motivated* before that evening class. Buffets though, are gross. I'm against them, and here there is not only the poor quality ingredients but also the "been on the steam table" too long factor. The hibachi is disappointing. The chefs do a great job entertainment-wise, but the food itself wasn't nearly as good as it could be. Then there is the sushi bar. They should really consider using sushi-grade fish. 3.5 stars. I honestly don't expect much when I walk into Epi. College campus food. I've had plenty of those "mehs." But Epi is slightly above my everyday college campus food, especially the nice bar area tucked away in the back. I came here several times with coworkers after our conference at GUHCC, and some of the food was slightly better than I imagined. The drinks were good, and the bartenders don't mind putting some creativity into them if you ask, but the service could be really slow and confusing. It is quite the norm that servers forget who ordered what and messed up your order. However, I must say that the cheesesteak was great! It has a mayo-looking sauce, and mixed together with steak grease... Yums! Not your food of choice when on a diet, but it's good for your soul. Other happy hour food was just okay. Peter is the real deal, he is a real chef, and when it comes to sushi, he is certainly at the top of his game. On top of his culinary skills, you will find yourself laughing or having deep conversations with him and the others sitting at the bar. Prices are great too. It is separated from the Epicurean buffet, which is why there is a waitress (Wendy). She is very kind and helpful with the menu and is quick to get the drinks, check or just to ask how everything is going. She too joins in on conversations which brings more positive vibes to the dining experience. I look forward to going back every time.. read more

Good food but a little pricey. Not surprised as it is the medical schools cafe and is also used by hospital staff and visitors. They also have a sub station where you really have to look at the descriptions to see what you're ordering, a typical sandwich has a unique name. Runs you almost $10 for one. Being a student at Georgetown, I come here a bit. The hibachi grill is great but very overpriced. The sushi is very good, and there are good happy hour deals for it as well. The buffet charges by the pound, so that is a tad expensive as well. The bar is excellent as a sports bar or a hang out for Happy Hour. Terrific beer selection and a better whiskey selection than I have seen at many bars. The side grill is a great value, with great food. I wish it were more customizable, however. It is essentially three or four restaurants in one. Reservations and full wait service are available (but reservations are not necessary) for the Hibachi Grill and Sushi Bar. By the way, the chefs are excellent and entertaining. read more

The lovely Epi staff sees my mug on a daily basis. We've gotten to a point where they ring me up for a small iced-coffee (which is top-notch..or maybe that's just my caffeine addiction talking) before I even get to the cash register. The place is well run and manages hordes of doctors, students, and various other customers incredibly efficiently. I highly recommend the hot sandwiches, in particular, the The McGhee Center. While visiting the hospital a about 10 times over the course of a few weeks, I ate at the cafe almost all of those times. All things considered, the food was quite good. The Sandwich station makes excellent sandwiches to order and they are all very large in size, including the orders of fries and onion rings. The salad bar is very large and I'm not sure why reviews complain about the price. I thought it to be very reasonable considering the quality, size and variety. The hot bar with many choices that change daily was pretty good. Its not the best chinese, or indian food you'll get, but its a salad bar, what did you expect, Culinary excellence? read more
