This is probably the most phenomenal sushi experience that I've ever had. It'll likely be hard to top this place realistically. I've been back since I initially began this review and, yes, it's still top tier. Enjoy the photos and know that flavor and experience are on another level. There's also some pretty great bartenders here. Enjoy.

We had an incredible experience at Kyojin! I brought my family members from out of town and they were so impressed from the start with the atmosphere. Jessica did a wonderful job of explaining the menu and making suggestions based on our individual tastes (and we had a lot of particular tastes at our table). She was also incredibly attentive and quick to check in on us throughout the meal despite having a busy section. Everything she suggested we absolutely loved. I don't think they can do any wrong here. The inventiveness and quality of the sushi is unmatched. Definitely the best sushi spot in the city.

5 stars for everything. Quality, ambiance, service, presentation and overall experience and execution. I'll lead by saying it was on the pricier end for the chefs pics and signature dishes but the rolls and smaller dishes are reasonably priced. The monster quad (and I do hope I recall that as the name of the bowl pictured correctly) and the creamy scallop roll were absolutely delicious and prob my faves. It's hard to pick a favorite in general as nothing fell short of expectations and I would 100% return because the options seem endless. Drinks were also well made and service was quick and knowledgeable about any questions on the large menu!

I have been a huge fan of the Yume restaurant for years now. Kyojin is all about great vibes, decor and ambience. There is a DJ playing on the weekends and the food here is next level. I stopped by recently with some family. We ordered everything from the chirashi bowl, the Monster quad, toro tartare, lemon shooters, and the a5 Wagyu bowl. Some of our favorite rolls include the a5 Wagyu, scallop sunlight, and the Yume roll. All of the fish was fresh and delicious. Service here is top notch. We made reservations way in advance. Our server and the bartenders were attentive. Dining here comes at a premium cost. If you want a more private quiet dining spot this may not be it. I'll definitely be back to try their seasonal specials and hopefully catch one of their tuna events.

Easily the best upscale sushi I've had in the states. It was fresh and the flavors were layered. Kyojin knows how to do FANCY. 5 stars because sushi was all a hit. The pasta dish was not. Service was a little stiff but the quality of the food made up for it. The location is right in the heart of all things popular--Georgetown. It's a little hard to find the entrance because it's tucked away in an alley, but the inside of the restaurant feels like stepping into a zen oasis.

What you are paying for is for the vibes and spot being in Georgetown. Kyojin has a cool atmosphere and a solid concept, but the food didn't fully live up to expectations for me. Everything was decent, yet nothing really stood out, especially compared to other sushi spots. I normally really love sushi but I feel like some of the food choices didn't make sense or wasn't fully fleshed. It's an okay option if you're nearby, but not somewhere I'd specifically seek out for an exceptional meal, especially for the price. The staff is friendly and tried their best to make recommendations. Best Bite: - scallop roll - the winner ( a single piece of sushi that comes with three slices of bluefin tuna. Added uni)

I absolutely love Kyojin. If you want good food, good drinks and good vibes head here immediately. Kyojin's space is beautiful, modern and upscale. You walk into what feels like a dimly lit lair that opens up into a vibrant bar area along with different rooms that have plenty of seating for dining. Every room has a unique vibe that adds to the overall ambiance of the space. There's also a room where you can watch your food being prepared. It's a perfect place for a date night, family night or hanging out with friends. As upscale as it may seem, it's still a pretty casual place so all are welcome! The drinks are strong, creative and delightful and the sushi is top notch. I enjoyed everything. Our server was very helpful and friendly and did a great job with helping us navigate the menu. The only annoying thing is trying to get there. It's located on a narrow one way cobble stone road behind one of the main roads in Georgetown so parking can be tough and if you ride share your driver may have some trouble navigating. Other then figuring out travel, it's a great time. Kyojin is great and it's on my go-to list for great sushi, drinks and cool vibes. I will definitely be back!

Special roll called The G4. Excellent recommendation.

Superb. Spectacular. Sublime. I could give you all of the adjectives but Kyojin is an EXPERIENCE. Come see Quynh My (Queen-May) and TRUST her! She won't lead you astray on your path to gastronomic nirvana.

Really awesome sushi experience in Georgetown! The restaurant is gorgeous with its modern decor and exposed brick walls. It has a chic lounge-like feel to it. The cocktails are great, and they also have some unique beers on the menu. I had the samurai heat tequila cocktail. And I tried a matcha IPA. We tried a variety of offerings including miso soup, oysters, sashimi salad, nigiri and sushi rolls. My favorites were the creamy scallop roll and the green river roll. The service was good! The prices are expensive even by DC standards. Cocktails $19-20, Beers $13-15, and rolls vary in price quite a bit! I would definitely come back. We had a really great time, and everything was delicious.

Absolutely LOVED this place! The service was amazing. I'm a big sushi fan and the fish was fresh, as well as the scallops. The rolls had the perfect fish to rice ratio. Each bite was an experience and all the flavors paired perfectly with each other. The monkfish tower was delectable, the monkfish liver was buttery and melted in your mouth, and the pairing with the uni and yuzu ice was phenomenal. I would totally come back here if I'm back in the area!

I absolutely loved the ambiance of this place. Tucked into an alleyway underground, the decor inside was really cool. Walls lined with paper cranes and 3 beautiful bar spaces. The service was good, our waitress gave us free dessert because she thought she hadn't been attentive enough which was really kind. She was able to accommodate my allergy! The food was delicious and presented so nicely. Definitely check out this spot they also have a happy hour with a discounted menu selection.

Lavender smoked salmon nigiri

Eclectic & lively atmosphere - beautiful interior decor. Started off with spicy miso soup which was divine. Tofu melted in my mouth. I was excited to try the lavender smoked salmon. There was nothing distinctive about that. Similarly I paid for a side of truffle wasabi - tasted no different. So a bit overhyping of the flavors that blatantly weren't there. Absolutely enjoyed the garlic butter miso scallop nigiri. Something to note is that nothing here was really hot asides the soup lol which was fine but something to keep in mind for a pickier guest. Yume roll was delicious and a solid choice Uni pasta was very different and unique. Not a must try but a culinary experience. We also had the cucumber salad which was incredible

We reserved a table, but ended up eating at the bar instead for faster service. Servers were friendly, this looks like a good place for drinks if you're into that. Ambience was great, space is very clean and well decorated. I'm a fan of Omakase so I'm always on the lookout for high-quality sushi. The rolls and sushi dinner here were quite good, none of the fish in the sushi dinner were stringy. While the Green Day roll was recommended, I thought it was quite unpleasant in terms of mouth feel... each piece way too big and I've never had cooked scallops that still had all of its accessory meat around it. I would not get this particular roll again. I would return here to try other rolls if I'm dining with folks who cannot eat Omakase.

I was impressed and by the experience and would definitely come back for a Japanese meal that did not focus solely on ramen or sushi. The ambiance is well done, and the service was excellent. Our waiter was very attentive and able to answer any of our questions. To share, we got the spicy salmon roll, Karaage appetizer, and eggplant cheese appetizer. The spicy tuna roll was the most lackluster of the dishes, but the fish was fresh and the portion was decent for $12. The karaage appetizer was excellent. The chicken was moist and the coating was crunchy and super hot. The eggplant cheese was a surprise highlight of the meal. Pieces of eggplant in a melted cheese bowl made of eggplant was a simple combination. That was a very pleasant mix of textures. The pork Katsu was a highlight of the meal. Unfortunately forgot to take a picture, but the coding was super crispy and the portion size was pretty solid. The Unagidon or grilled eel bowl was also very well made and tasted great with the pickled ginger and seasoning on the side. The set came with miso soup which was very nice as well. My companions also got drinks which they said were well priced and good quality. Our overall meal cost somewhere in the range of $160 before tip which was reasonable given all of the items that we got. I look forward to my next visit!

Every moment felt perfectly curated and thoughtful. Every member of the staff was kind, swift, and knowledgeable. The prices are high and the portions are small, so be warned. Shōtō is one of DC's most striking Japanese dining experiences, equal parts upscale restaurant and high‑energy nightlife spot. The moment you walk in, you're hit with dramatic lighting, a sleek volcanic‑stone aesthetic, and a buzzy crowd that's clearly here to make a night of it. If you're looking for quiet, this isn't your place; if you're looking for a vibe, you've found it. The food is genuinely impressive. The robata‑grilled dishes are the stars, especially the short rib with chili‑soy glaze and the wagyu cuts that arrive perfectly caramelized. Sushi is clean, fresh, and beautifully presented; the hamachi and tacos are crowd favorites for a reason. The omakase is high‑quality, though ordering à la carte gives you more freedom to explore the menu's highlights. Don't skip the lobster tempura or the black cod gyoza. These are two of my absolute favorites! Service is polished and knowledgeable, though it can be a bit inconsistent on busy nights. The dress code is enforced, so come prepared...this is not a sneakers‑and‑hoodie kind of spot. Glam up! I have been there three times. My wife's family is in St. Louis. The chef moved to Washington, D.C. from there. His establishment in the Midwest was not bad. But his new venture in the capitol is excellent. I would gladly go anytime the opportunity presented itself. The only issue is reservations at the tiny place. (They have a time limit for tables.) They offer standard fare for a izakaya. They also have sashimi and sushi (that is not always available on a pub menu), and it is among the best you'd find in the city. The dish that has been written about in the NY Times is the ara yaki. That is prepared from leftovers, scraps that otherwise might be tossed as trash: heads, jaws, fins, bones, etc., broiled with a bit of salt. The explanation is insufficient. For this by itself, the restaurant is worth visiting. It will make you want to try to prepare the same quality from leavings. I'd bet it is like much else: simple in concept, easy to execute poorly or at a level that would be deemed middling, and frustrating or maddening to try to perfect. That also is true with the only imperfection, which was the tamago. Brought at the end, which is a custom (it can be the first course or the last course), the omelet was more rustic. It would not have passed muster with Jiro of the acclaimed documentary. The issue was the shape; it was crude. But by any standard short of perfectionism, the meal was great.
