I really wish I had the chance to visit again to see if I could have a better experience the second time. But alas I was traveling and popped in for a late light dinner. In all, the service was mediocre, the vibes were a little off for me, though the food was definitely higher on the spectrum when it comes to Sushi. I sat down at the bar and when I declined ordering a cocktail, I could tell the Bartender was a little annoyed. I was looking for some suggestions and he also seemed a bit put off that I was planning to put in a small order. Honestly, I had just traveled all day and just wanted a little something because it was late. To my right, there was a couple who ordered this interesting dish where you cook your steak on a hot rock, except for the fact that the smoke from the cooking went right into my face, and I was literally smoked out sitting there. I actually had to move because it was affecting me so much. Perhaps something to think about in an intimate dining setting when it comes to menu choices. The other challenge, which really is no fault of the restaurant, potentially.... there was a group of women celebrating something who kept ordering drinks, and with every round, got louder and louder. Honestly, at a high priced intimate sushi restaurant, maybe it's not the place to sing your own version of karaoke at a table when other people are trying to enjoy a dining experience. As someone who can appreciate high-quality Sushi, that definitely hit the mark, but I had a hard time enjoying it with everything else going on. The tuna was excellent. Edamame was extremely tasty. And funny, I found that the seaweed used and Rice was absolutely perfect. The salmon piece with sake was OK. With so many other spots like this in the area, I really hope that they work on their service and ambience.

Went for happy hour to tryout Uchi, which I was so excited about! Really enjoyed the experience. The happy hour was worth it. It's definitely very small bites though. Compared to other sushi restaurants their portions are smaller than average, so I'm not sure if I would show up starving but the flavor and technique are there! The drinks are amazing. The subarashi stands out to me. And for food, the Hama chili was really delicious. Service was very fast, attentive and friendly! And the ambience is very upscale, classic; feel free to dress up.

A nice addition to the city! They have a great happy hour & tasting menu. Definitely go and try some of everything!

Excellent place in Dupont Circle for sushi and Japanese delights. We forgoed the tasting menu in favor of à la carte so we could try everything we wanted: uni, salmon belly, fatty tuna, Spanish anchovy, mushroom, hama kama (grilled yellowtail collar), a5 wagyu cooked on a hot rock (which melted in my mouth), pumpkin and cauliflower tempura, and the showstopper fried milk for dessert. Enjoyed our seats at the bar to watch the expert sushi chefs in action. Attentive service throughout, including a special recognition for Father's Day. Can't wait to come back!

Date night at Uchi was everything we hoped it would be and then some! After hearing so many great things about Uchi, we finally decided to visit for date night and opted for the 7-course Signature Tasting Menu. If you're someone who enjoys putting yourself in the chef's hands and being surprised throughout the meal, this is absolutely the way to go. Before we even sat down, I was impressed by the space itself. The restaurant is much larger than I expected, with beautiful modern wood architecture and design throughout. The wraparound bar creates a stunning focal point and is the only seating area that doesn't require a reservation. There also appeared to be two private dining rooms, making the space suitable for everything from date nights to larger celebrations. The hostesses were welcoming and greeted us immediately upon arrival. We were about 10 minutes early, so our table wasn't quite ready and we waited briefly in the small vestibule area. Once seated, our server was kind, attentive, and happy to answer questions about the menu. I especially appreciated the thoughtful pacing of the meal, which allowed us to fully enjoy each course without feeling rushed. Because the tasting menu changes daily and seasonally, every experience is unique, but ours was a beautiful progression of flavors, textures, and creativity. We started with cool tastings that included Uchi Salad and Uchi's famous Hama Chili. The salad ended up being my favorite course of the evening, while the yellowtail paired with citrus and Thai chili was bright, fresh, and beautifully balanced. The chef-selected nigiri showcased the quality and freshness of the fish, while the hot tastings brought comforting richness to the meal. The Brussels sprouts were packed with flavor and quickly became one of my favorite bites. The Kinoko Nabe with seasonal mushrooms, tentsuyu, koshihikari rice, egg yolk, and gyutoro was absolutely phenomenal. Of course, we couldn't leave without dessert. Uchi's famous Fried Milk more than lived up to the hype. The combination of vanilla custard, salted fudge, and toasted blondie created the perfect sweet ending to an already incredible meal. From the beautiful atmosphere to the attentive service and thoughtfully curated menu, Uchi delivered a memorable dining experience from start to finish. I highly recommend checking it out and treating yourself to the chef's tasting menu. I'll certainly be back to see what the chefs dream up next.

Very good dinner here! We got the 9 course omakase happy hour deal and it was amazing. Our waiter even gave us 2 additional items. Already have my next reservation booked!

A standout from start to finish. My husband and I came to celebrate our 10 year anniversary. When you enter, you walk into the bar area which has several small tables and booths along with bar seating. The decor throughout is cool. We were seated at a nice "sweetheart" table so we could sit side by side. Our server was very attentive and everyone who stopped by our table wished us a happy anniversary. We got the 7 course tasting menu and especially LOVED the Hama chili, the sea bream with lemon zest (which the head chef served us) and the fried milk dessert. It's a good amount of food for a very reasonable cost in this environment. We WILL be coming back.

Happy hour was great. Everyone here was super friendly. Rachel was our server and she was great!! Loved the bluefin tuna handroll, salmon nigiri, pork belly rice bowl, hama chili. The seaweed salad was fresh and a good portion. Could have skipped the karaage because it had too much fish sauce. Subarashi was well balanced, lychee martini was very sweet. Very upscale in both the bar and dining room.

Uchi is very sleek and sexy vibe for a new restaurant. The ambiance was beautiful and the bar was breathtaking. All of the food was very tasty and the sushi was fresh. My overall recommendation when coming here is to order the chefs tasting menu, which I wish we had done. The menu isn't roll heavy, with more nigiri options so it's hard to feel full while trying to chart your own adventure. If I come back, I'd definitely be sure to try the chefs tasting menu.

Uchi was fabulous, every bite was complete perfection. We were seated in a booth in the front so I can't speak for the main dining room but it was beautiful! My one feedback was the service. We had a table of 6 and we were there for over 3 hours just ordering à la carte. We ran into issues with items being forgotten and since the items came out as they were ready we had people waiting for extended periods to get items between orders. The staff were attentive about removing items from the table.

As a long time Uchi fan who has been to multiple locations, I was delighted to see one opening up in D.C. I was even more excited to be invited to the soft opening ahead of the grand opening on May 12. I was really impressed with the design and the size of the restaurant. Comparing it to the OG Austin location, this place is huge! Our waitress, Meezy was so sweet and super attentive despite the restaurant being packed. Starting off with the menu, it is excellent and has some of my personal favorites including the highball, Hama chili, and the dry-aged bluefin otoro. The service as expected at Uchi, was excellent where me and my girlfriend were taken care of. To be honest, this didn't even feel like a soft opening since everything was on point. If you enjoy the highest quality sushi, at a reasonable price especially if you go to the daily happy hour from 4-6, Uchi is the PLACE to be.

Welcome to DC, Uchi! Fine Japanese dining indeed!!!! This review is based on their soft opening to which we were thoroughly pleased. I cannot wait to return once they've opened on May 12! Service was great! I can appreciate staff whose attention to small details showed in the way that they carefully described the dishes. However, our waiter, Scott, was a star! We trusted his recommendation for the Signature Tasting and boy oh boy was every selection well worth it! Ambiance: think sexy, cozy, and chic! The soft lighting invites date night or time with friends. Very modern decor, actually made me feel like I was somewhere in LA. It was beautiful. DRINKS: I ordered the Uzume- OMG this drink felt like I was vacationing in the Amalfi Coast, gazing at bellowing waves. It was refreshing, impeccable in flavor, and offered a beautiful spiciness from the Thai chili while cooling down my mouth with rich cucumber flavor. This was my favorite drink and very unique at that. My boyfriend thoroughly enjoyed the Kenja old fashioned, smooth to taste. The Nikko Martini was my next drink and it came with a side of olive, cornichons, and lychee-ALL excellent pairings for a refreshing traditional dirty martini taste. This drink was worth the try but my heart was stuck on the Uzume. My boyfriend had the Tsuari which he also loved but his first drink was his favorite. SIGNATURE TASTING: Starter- Pineapple granita (shaved ice) with a remarkable marmalade. You wouldn't expect this cold dessert like opener but it truly opens up your palate, inviting your tastebuds to explore the menu to follow. I thoroughly enjoyed. Uchi Salad This salad was pure culinary creativity. Compiled of daikon and crispy wild rice all wrapped in baby greens with a delectable house made cashew pesto (which you creativity dip the salad rolls in). This salad and that dressing felt like a warm hug, although perfectly chilled and crisped. It was unique and flavorful. Madai, japanese sea bream This was stellar! We even learned a cute trick from the server to flip the roll with our fingers in order to get the full sushi taste. Whatever the magic, it worked! This was divine. There was an underlying taste of ginger but I'm not sure where it came from. However, this was really good. Sake, Atlantic salmon Sadly this dish was missing the mark and it simply tastes like salmon. There was no underlying flavor or real flavor profile. Not the worst, but also not my favorite. Brussel sprouts The Chef must have a magic wand in the kitchen because this was another dish which contained pure magic. The sweet chili and lemon produced the perfect sauce which was evenly spread throughout each bite. Amazing! Hama Chili Gosh, this was sooooooo good! Hear me out, you have to try the thinly sliced yellowtail by itself and allow the sauce in the bowl to seep through each bite. It gave the dish personality and broke the savory flavor with some light citrus/heat...it was scrumptious. We then used the orange slices at the bottom to cleanse our palate because hey, there was more on the way. Zero Sen Another perfectly prepared yellowtail dish with a beautiful touch of fresh cilantro in each bite and a subtle sweet sauce. There was also fresh avocado in the roll and shallot. Perfect dish! Watarigani This was a showstopper. The crabmeat on the top of this roll was buttery soft and juicy. So much flavors, I can brag all day. We concluded with the Kinoko nabe AH-MA-ZING! This rice being the last dish was a home run for sure. Way to close a meal. The mushrooms were crunchy in some area and soft in others, all while being juicy and lightly seasoned. Placed in a ceramic bowl, the heat from the rice allowed it to continuously cook at the bottom while in the bowl, giving it a perfectly crisped texture. Dessert We concluded the tasting with their Warm Banana Cake. Honey, there are no words to describe how delicious this was. Not too sweet but just right. The side of chicory caramel, buckwheat, and white coffee ice cream were divine! Each flavor softly supported the other, making this a must have dessert. Overall, I'm sold! Count me in to return and tell a few friends and readers lol. Excellent dining! I'm excited about its future.

From top to bottom, Uchi DC is a fantastic addition to the city. I first discovered Uchi while visiting West Hollywood and fell in love with the food, the ambiance, and the warm hospitality. When it came time to celebrate an anniversary, there was no question where we were going. We sat at the sushi bar, which turned out to be the perfect choice, our chef was engaging and fun to chat with, which made the experience feel personal and special. Everything we had was delicious, and the Brussels sprouts were a standout moment: they turned my partner into a full-on believer. The entire staff was wonderful, and we will absolutely be back.

Our waiter was very attentive and able to answer any of our questions. To share, we got the spicy salmon roll, Karaage appetizer, and eggplant cheese appetizer. The spicy tuna roll was the most lackluster of the dishes, but the fish was fresh and the portion was decent for $12. The karaage appetizer was excellent. The chicken was moist and the coating was crunchy and super hot. The eggplant cheese was a surprise highlight of the meal. Pieces of eggplant in a melted cheese bowl made of eggplant was a simple combination. That was a very pleasant mix of textures. The pork Katsu was a highlight of the meal. Unfortunately forgot to take a picture, but the coding was super crispy and the portion size was pretty solid. The Unagidon or grilled eel bowl was also very well made and tasted great with the pickled ginger and seasoning on the side. The set came with miso soup which was very nice as well. My companions also got drinks which they said were well priced and good quality. Our overall meal cost somewhere in the range of $160 before tip which was reasonable given all of the items that we got. I look forward to my next visit!

The layout is interesting -- there's an upstairs when you walk in, but the sushi bar and a good bit of seating are downstairs. The menu is pretty straightforward with a mix of hand rolls, appetizers, specialty rolls, nigiri/sashimi, and traditional rolls. They also have a few solid combo deals, though I usually prefer trying a variety of items instead. Service was quick, which is always appreciated at a sushi spot. We ordered a few specialty rolls, two traditional rolls, and a couple orders of sashimi, all served together on one platter. The rolls were a great size -- filling without being overly large. The sashimi was fresh, and the traditional rolls really balanced out the meal nicely. The flounder and tuna sashimi were both excellent, and the California roll made with real crab was simple, fresh, and really satisfying. The total came out somewhere in the $70 range, so after tip and splitting it between two people, it was about $40 each to try multiple rolls and sashimi. Definitely fair pricing for the quality and amount of food. This spot had been on my list for a while, so I'm glad I finally made it over. Some of the rolls wouldn't come off because the wrapping had a lot of moisture so I ended up just eating it deconstructed. I prefer how Kazu Nori gives you each roll one at a time to prevent this. It wasn't hard to get a reservation, but the place was full the whole time I was there. We sat on the second floor. Dinner included the Tuna Nuta ($15), Shimesaba (mackerel, $19.5, 8 pieces), Beef Tongue ($19.5, 4 pieces), three small vegetables (we picked Kimchi Cucumbers, Hijiki Seaweed, and Nasu Eggplant, $19) and a fried Sea Bream Collar (suggested by the server, $30 maybe?). Also draft Sapporo ($8). I liked the Tuna Nuta the best. I had never had this before, and I liked the flavor of the dressing. The Shimesaba was fine; it tasted like mackerel, as you would expect. The Beef Tongue was a huge disappointment -- the slices were uneven and haphazard, the various marbling/fat/textures looked unappealing, and it was served lukewarm. There was no effort or care put into this dish. The Sea Bream Collar was fine; the fry was nice, it was boney (as expected), but I did not like it as much as the salmon collar at St. Anselm. Vegetables were pretty good; the cucumbers didn't taste much like kimchi (a positive, in my book), I liked the flavors and textures of the seaweed (a new preparation for me), and I liked the eggplant flavor even if the texture was a bit limp. Service was pretty weak. The server offered halfhearted suggestions. They did not do basic things like clear the chopstick wrapper or keep the water carafe filled. We struggled to order a second beer. Ambiance was simple, but I liked it well enough. Overall, do not recommend.

We came here for Valentine's Day. Managed to snag a reservation for 5 PM, right when they open, at…read morethe sushi bar. The staff were all absolutely lovely. And we even got a cute little Valentines gift. I can't say enough nice things about our server - she was so great. Sitting at the sushi bar was neat as we got to see everything being made. We also got to try some complimentary bites. Great experience! The cocktails were crazy good. Everything we ordered was delicious. The salmon usuzukuri was so good we ordered it twice. The Kobe baller was another standout. The scallops were also fantastic. Such a yummy meal! Highly recommend! We will definitely be back.

I might give them another shot given the rave reviews, but tonight I'm disappointed. At this point,…read moreI haven't even seen my check so the price is not the issue, but the service and overall flavor for the price point definitely are. My Hotote crudo app which should be served cold was served cold on a super hot plate which means by the time I ate it, it was thus weird hot/semi-luke warm temp and honestly, not appetizing. I tried the Moriawase after and told my server I wanted to add caviar if it was possible and since I didn't get any, I assume it is only an option for the nigiri/sashimi. Silly but no problem. I was still sooooo hungry I ordered a Surf&turf roll and it was less than appetizing. It had no flavor which was terribly unfortunate. I didn't make a review about the sake mixup or my server only to be polite but there are definitely low points, and those make the list. I hope it's better for everyone else!

The food at Sakaki is full of flavor and the prices are reasonable for the amount. I think, after being twice, that the AYCE is not as worth it for me personally because I'm not a big eater, but it's totally worth it if you want a lot of variety and you have a good appetite. I really liked the rolls in particular. The service was excellent- it was a nice balance of coming over once in a while to ask how we were doing without coming over too much. The vibes are awesome with a really nice interior- definitely a nice place to go for a date,!just to go with friends to have a nice meal, or even to grab a meal alone since the center has a large area for single seating. Fyi- for the AYCE menu, note that once you put in an order for a round, you can't order for another 10 min so be sure to order enough at a time. Also, there is a time limit to the AYCE (I think it was 90 min). This'll definitely be a place I go to regularly in the future!

I tried as much of the menu as I could and the rolls and nigiris were definitely the highlight. I wouldn't recommend the crab korokke (too liquidy, and no crab that I could taste) or the karagge - save space for other items! The AYCE is 90mins and you can order every 10 minutes from a tablet. Service was FAST, they definitely weren't playing games. The restaurant itself is also super spacious and well decorated.
