    The Volcano
    Carol R.

Visited this restaurant for dinner with my niece who attends Georgetown University. Service was fast and friendly. The restaurant was very busy. The spring rolls were wonderful, crispy and hot and delicious. The pineapple fried rice was yummy with a mixture of shrimp and chicken and, of course, pineapple. The Volcano was a hit with a great flavor accenting tender beef, shrimp, asparagus, spinach, snow peas, and shiitake mushrooms. The pad see eew: wide noodles with tofu and spinach is a favorite Thai dish of mine, so I was disappointed at the lack of flavor. And the noodles were even a tad overcooked. The noodle dish and the messy restroom made me minus a star. Otherwise, the food was very good.

Staff are friendly. When we came in Tuesday afternoon it was not busy. Maybe two other tables but it was nice and calm inside. The curry puffs had a strong curry flavor. I've only tried this at one other place (Sisters thai) so I had high expectations but they were just alright. It gets served with sweet chili sauce. I'll give it a 3/5 stars. The Red curry with chicken was super flavorful and hit the spot. I asked for it to be the hottest and it did not have any spicy or kick to it. Even as medium which is how I think it normally is served. The basil duck was not what we had tried the past. I think we were expecting maybe a side of the duck to be crispy? Not sure, but the overall taste of the duck was too gamy and did not go well with the sauce it was in. However the veggies they used were fresh! We were going to pack it up to bring home and let someone else eat it but the waitress was kind enough to take it off our bill. Heard good reviews from other sources so we came because we were in the area. The curry was good so I would recommend trying their pangang curry or green curry!

Stopped in for dinner after a day trip to DC and Georgetown from Richmond. Service was great, glass of Sauvignon blanc was exceptional and food was good. We started with the Georgetown roll and chicken satay. For entrees we all picked: bbq chicken, pad see ew, pad thai shrimp, and cashew chicken.

    Mai Mojito

I went to Mai Thai for a friend's celebration. I ordered the mojito and their tom kha gai (coconut mushroom chicken) soup. One thing to note if you're gluten free or celiac, they have very limited gluten free options. To start, we were a large group of 12 people. The waitress started taking drink orders from one side of the table and skipped about four of us, even though we were ready to order. My soup, even though I specified was my entree, came way before everyone's food, so I basically ate alone and then stared at people why they ate their entrees! The drink was really good, and nicely decorated. However, the soup was mediocre, to be honest. It was mostly liquid, few pieces of mushroom (cut in huge chunks, barely cooked) and chicken. I do not recommend ordering the soup at all! When it was time to pay, they do not split checks, so one person had to put down their credit card. I think this place is overrated, and would only return if someone really wants to go.

I thought the food here was decent! A friend and I shared Drunken Noodles and Red Curry and it was good. One thing that the restaurant should do is update their hours on Google since it currently says closes at 9:30 whereas Yelp says 9:00pm. There were a few guests right before us and as we were wrapping up our meal, we felt that the waiters were pushing to get us out which I kind of found to be a little bit rude. I feel that they should have told us directly about the closing time rather than indirectly pushing us out.

    Roasted Duck Salad ($12.95)

Located on a picturesque street laden with cute cafes and upscale eateries in the Georgetown area, Mai Thai is a neighborhood favorite among students and residents alike, attracting a diverse set of clientele with its breadth of Japanese and Thai cuisine at a reasonable price. There's a nice outdoor patio area for seating, as well as a large interior with a sleek, modern, Pan-Asian vibe. I had made a reservation for 7pm for a party of six, but there were a good amount of open tables, so walk-ins are definitely possible! We were immediately greeted and seated by the host, and service was friendly and fast - we ordered within five minutes of being seated, and our orders came out within ten minutes! The menu is vast, ranging from Thai classics such as Pad Thai and Red Curry to Japanese favorites like sushi plates and Rainbow Rolls. I ordered the Roasted Duck Salad ($12.95) - it was beautifully presented, with lots of colors from the fresh vegetables, and a good portion for the price (located in the Appetizers section of the menu). There wasn't much duck in the dish, but it was flavorful and well-cooked, with a crispy exterior. The vegetables were crunchy and delicious, with red onions, carrots, scallions, ginger, and cilantro, and the softness of the cherry tomatoes added a nice textural contrast. The lime dressing the salad was served with was quite spicy (labeled as "extra spicy" on the menu"), but acidic and served to balance the fatty duck quite nicely. My friends all ordered the Pad Thai with Chicken ($16.95) or the Drunken Noodles with Beef ($16.95, +$2 for beef). Everyone enjoyed their noodle dishes, which came with a generous portion (they all took leftovers home!) of noodles, vegetables, and protein. All of the sauces were flavorful and not too sweet (the ultimate Asian compliment), and the noodles were cooked nicely to a soft texture without being overly cooked. One thing to note here is that they cannot do separate checks for large parties, so come ready to split the bill! Overall, Mai Thai is a great stop for a casual dinner in Georgetown without breaking the bank. It's not the most authentic Thai/Japanese food out there, but it's tasty, and you'll certainly leave full!

We came for dinner before happy hour ended at 6 pm. It was not crowded, we were the only customers in the dining room at 5:40 on a Thursday. We tried 3 appetizers for $4 each - fried calamari, curry puffs, and Thai chicken wings. The first 2 appetizers were good, but the wings were hard and overcooked (not recommended). We also ordered 2 entrees - pad see eew with beef and ginger stir fry with chicken. Both were large portions that were shared by 3 people. The ginger stir fry had mixed vegetables that were not specified on the menu and taste was bitter. But the pad see eew was very good in which the beef and Chinese broccoli were tender. Our server was attentive and filled our glasses of water several times during a hot summer day. The restaurant is nicely decorated and played American pop music sung by unknown artists in a jazzy tune. The best time to come for dinner would be before 6 pm so take advantage of the happy hour appetizers!

I love drop-in surprises and Mai Thai is one of those gems. We were doing the tourist stroll around Georgetown on a rainy weekday and happened upon this cozy little restaurant. Service was quick and the food superb! I typically order green curry at Thai restaurants but saw the Lad Na and decided to give it a try. I've never even heard of this dish or seen it on a menu but will certainly ask when I dine at Thai restaurants in the future. I highly recommend it. My partner's red curry was also very good.

Refund for a he 18% tip the staff added without my husband's authorization
    Jes Anne G.

Used to come here a lot when I was going to Georgetown. It was a must stop when my husband and I were in town for our anniversary. The food was great but the service was really awful. When my husband thanked the waitress for bringing his drink, the lady looked at him and basically rolled her eyes. He shrugged it off. During our meal, we asked for more napkins and the guy we asked acted as if he had to get some from his personal stash. When I asked which way the bathrooms were (it's been a while), the ladies at the front looked at me for a few beats and then pointed at a hallway behind me. Thought that was weird and rude. The staff became super attentive and switched their energy when they dropped off the bill. We decided from all the bad service encounters to not leave tip. About a week later, my husband reviewed his credit card charges and noticed the charge for our meal here was a bit more than he remembered authorizing on the receipt. I called in and asked what the charge would be for the exact things we ordered. They told me about $65, which is what we remembered. I asked "so why was my husband charged about $12 more than that?" They said since there was no cash tip they "assumed" we meant to leave it on the card. Absolutely not. We authorized what the meal costs. The audacity to charge 18% on BAD SERVICE is wild. I told them if they didn't refund the tip amount I would report their bad practices. I should have demanded the entire meal refunded because what they did was FRAUD. Avoid going here. Especially if you're a tourist.

The decor is dated, the restaurant does not give a "clean" vibe, and the bathroom was gross. IMO, the bathroom says a lot about any establishment. The service staff was a little odd almost like it wasn't the year 2024 nor were they giving professional staff energy. The food: the "spring rolls" were NOT spring rolls. They were skinny egg rolls and the sauce proved it...duck sauce and not fish sauce. Some people may like that cabbage filling, but call it what it really is. The eel and avocado rollers horrendous! Thick, doughy rice with chewy, fatty eel pieces. Miso soup was so salty...why?! The chicken pad see ew was actually tasty and so was the chicken stir fry. I can see ordering to go items if you're a local , but would not go for a sit down meal again.

I'm surprised by the mid rating of this place! I thought the food was great:) Great ambiance for dinners. Went on a reservation with a large group and they were able to accommodate us very well. Panang Curry (5/5) I really liked this dish! Large portion sizes, very creamy and tasty. Sweet and somewhat savory dish that was very good. Slightly nutty flavor. We got chicken as our protein with this. Was delicious. Green Curry (3/5) I think this was also quite tasty but it could've been better if there was less ginger. I definitely bit into chunks of ginger that left a bad taste in my mouth (i'm not a fan of ginger). Then after taking leftovers home the next day I could not stomach this. Just tasted like ginger soup :( . Pad Thai (5/5) Standard pad thai, thinner noodles I think. Sweet and savory, very tasty!! Cant go wrong with this classic. Pad See Ew (5/5) It was rlly good! First time getting this dish and I like it. Savory dish with wider noodles. The noodles got a bit soft and stuck together but that's expected. Mango Sticky Rice (4/5) Small portion and mango wasn't the freshest but still tasty!

    Ambience is nice.

As a Thai Native, I enjoy the authentic Coconut Curry at Mai Thai. I ordered Red Curry Jae from Vegetarian Menu for my dinner. It came with the fried tofu. I did not know and asked for "No Fried Tofu" in my curry. Staff were very supportive. He removed the fried tofu and added steamed vegetables for me. The red curry (No added spice from original curry paste) was delicious. The first bite, I remembered the red curry in Thailand cooked by mom. I came back another day to try Green Curry Jae - Vegetarian (asked for no Tofu!) It's delicious! The quality is consistent with generous fresh vegetables! I sat outside and it's peaceful and beautiful ambience! Thank you!! Note that Green Curry is made from Green Chilies which is more spicy than Red Curry! Curry paste is authentic. Generous portion of vegetables. Come with Jasmine Rice. Good quality of coconut cream No MSG Fresh vegetables and ingredients Coconut is considered as a "Fruit of God". Coconut is Pure Energy. Coconut Curry makes my skin so soft and radiant with natural moisturizer! I love Coconut Oil as it's natural. Let food be thy medicine! I highly recommend to try authentic Thai foods here. Very nice staff, Chefs. Thank you! Kathy

Corn coated in a thin layer of tempura batter, fried until crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, showcasing its natural sweetness and slightly chewy texture. It was somewhat like a Chinese yumi-lao玉米烙 but more moist. The most surprising thing was that despite being entirely vegetarian food, it has the sweetness and meaty texture of fried shrimp paste. The sweet and sour sauce is similar to the Thai sweet chili sauce commonly found in China, but thinner. Served in a small cup, it looked like a cup of black tea, making it more refreshing. Grilled Pork Neck: Very different from pork neck in Chinese Thai cuisine; it's more like Cantonese char-siu叉燒. The pork neck was very well marinated and grilled to a very tender perfection, with a rich and smooth honey aroma, and a subtle wine aftertaste, but it was slightly too sweet for me. Nam Jin Jaew was primarily composed of the tangy kick of lime and the savory saltiness of fish sauce, complemented by the mild spiciness of bird's eye chili, the special fragrance of cilantro, and the sweetness of palm sugar, with a subtle hint of smokiness. It was refreshing on the whole, and incredibly layered - I fell in love with it instantly. Tom Saab Soup: It looked light, but it was surprisingly spicy and sour! The ribs were very fresh, all marbled with fat and lean meat, stewed until incredibly tender, allowing you to taste the natural aroma of the meat. My friend thoughtfully ordered it mildly spicy, but in the end, it just felt like it lacked a kick. Mango Sticky Rice: The best mango sticky rice I've ever had! The sticky rice was cooked to perfect texture and warmth, absorbing the coconut milk flawlessly - neither too watery nor too dry. The first taste was the fragrance of glutinous rice, followed by the sweetness of coconut milk, and a refreshing, slightly tart mango to cut through the richness. There's no reservations here as it is walk-in only. SUKIYAKI - 23 +chicken My go-to is normally pad see ew, but wanted to try something different. I noticed they had a Thai-style sukiyaki which isn't commonly found in most Thai restaurants I go to. I loved that this dish contained glass noodles, a wide variety of veggies, and a good portion of chicken. However, I didn't love the sukiyaki sauce, which was savory with some acidity. The sukiyaki had great ingredients, but not my ideal flavors. My friend got the Siam House Noodle with extra spice, which i didn't bother trying. He enjoyed it though. Overall, Siam House gives you a huge portion of food -- we both had enough for leftovers, and this is saying a lot for my friend who has a big appetite.

I'll admit that stopped by here for a late(ish) night feeding because it was the first place that I…read moresaw after leaving another business in the area. That said, I was very happy with my this random result. Upon entering the restaurant, I thought the host/bartender/server was super nice and very friendly. For my dining pleasure, I went with the drunken noodles with chicken. While the meal was pretty tasty, I thought the portion size was a bit small compared to the same dish that I've had at other Thai places in the area. While the portion size was a bit smaller for this dish, I did think the prices in general were pretty reasonable compared to other spots in the area. Interestingly enough, I did place an order to go for my family, and the portions for those dishes were pretty standard. One thing that I have to recommend: the chicken wings with the chili sauce. I'll say that the sweet chili sauce was out of this world amazing. The Regent really should bottle this sauce and sell it, because I would totally use this sauce in my everyday cooking. Actually, I probably appreciated the sweet chili sauce more than the chicken wings. ;) Overall, I cannot really complain about my experience at The Regent. Perhaps, I'll return during another one of my random adventures in that part of town.
