The chive cake and Naem Khao was my fav dish. Would come back again! The staff was friendly. They get busy so make sure you make a reservation if you don't want to be waiting too long.

We made reservations here based on recommendations from our sources. So glad we had the opportunity to eat at this gem of a restaurant! Every dish we ordered was so delicious, bursting with layers of flavor and worth the relatively pricey tags. The presentation of the foods felt culturally authentic and well structured. Ambiance was nice, folks were friendly especially being hospitable with our three young kids, and overall just a pleasant experience. Reservations are highly encouraged, we had one at opening and it definitely got busy not too long after.

Food was good but wasn't worth the drive to DC. Our friends wanted to try it so we agreed to this restaurant. We ordered a pork and beef dish but the seasoning for both tasted exactly the same. It was good but wish it tasted a little different. The fried rice was delicious and the branzino was our favorite dish.

Wow! Everything we had here was absolutely delicious, including the cocktails! We chose vegetarian options, and I was delighted to find that the tofu in each dish was prepared in a different way that suited what it was paired with. The Pad Kee Mao is always a favorite, but the curry was a surprise star of the show, especially with the eggplant and tofu. We weren't asked for a spice level, but I was glad to find that it was spiced just right for my palette. This place is loud and hopping but still made for a good place to catch up.

Back again to say that Thip Khao's mee kathi and sesame sticky rice dessert is officially one of my favorite meals in DC.

What a wonderful spot!! *drool* - and gluten free people, you'll have many options (which are labeled on their menu as well). However, I would be very straight forward about how you respond to cross contact - as our server mentioned that some have cross contact and some don't. I am less sensitive to cross contact. ^After that is taken care of, expect to loveeee your food! So delicious- I think I scraped each of my plates clean. Can't wait to return!

My wife and I recently went to Thip Khao for a weeknight dinner after not having gone for several years and had a good experience. We were seated immediately at our reservation time and got solid service. My wife and I shared the Tam Som salad, which was delicious but extremely spicy (even for those with a high spice tolerance)! I got the Pad Phet Paa for my main dish. While everything was well-cooked, the catfish in particular could have used more flavor. I would recommend Thip Khao for a nice date night or to celebrate a milestone!

Chicken hearts. 10/10! Def worth trying if you haven't had them before

You know you're in a good southeast Asian restaurant when the first thing you smell is fish sauce when you walk through the door. Thip Khao offers a variety of dishes and you'll find something for everyone! Unique finds like chicken hearts and classics such as larb

Venue is well-decorated. Nicely lit, interesting wall art and decor fitting the restaurant. May get a bit loud. Loved the laab and the curries. Definitely just the right amount of spice for me. Good sized portions and the sticky rice served in the woven thing was cool. Also enjoyed their tofu dish. Packed on a holiday weekday night. Definitely recommended.

We didn't have a reservation for Thip Khao, as they were fully reserved all the way until Dec 28. We decided to chance it and get to the restaurant right at opening time at 5pm, and we were smart to do that. There were already other people here, likely having the same idea. After we got seated, I noticed that there were people who ended up standing at the bar - I think they got food, not just drinks. Thip Khao is always delicious, but not as good as the very first time I came to this restaurant - perhaps the flavors hit differently once you've had them before? Either way, my star dish of the night was the Muu Haeng, the pork jerky - I had this once before but had forgotten which dish I had gotten. In the past, I had gotten the Piing thinking it was this dish, but was always slightly disappointed. Don't get me wrong, the Piing pork shoulder is perfectly fine! But the pork jerky is a little bit crunchy... hard to explain, but it's really good, and not too dry. I wish they provided more rice, dishes came with either a ball of sticky rice, which is difficult to share with a party, or a small bowl of white rice. So you may want to consider getting extra rice, to avoid being meated out. As an aside, the restaurant is quite dark, and it was almost hard to see our food until we switched tables.

Disappointing take-out experience. We ordered 5 dishes and most were underwhelming or too salty. Total cost of these 5 entrees was $136. After adding tip you're well over $160. Given the quality of the food and how overly salty they were, it was a disappointing experience especially given the high praise by others. * Laab chicken - this is normally a refreshing appetizer but what we received was literally inedible. We tried a couple bites and even had it with rice to cut down the saltiness, but we couldn't do it. I've had this dish *many* times and this is by far the worst. The saltiness overwhelms all other flavors in this dish. If I were dining it, I would absolutely return this dish. * Kee Mao chicken - chicken was dry and noodles were clumped together. Overall flavor and seasoning was OK at best. I'd hope this dish is much better if you have it dining in. * Gang Phet beef - this was our favorite dish of everything we ordered. Red curry flavor was balanced and the beef and vegetables were delicious. I would reorder and recommend to others. This dish is comparable to many other reputable Laotian and Thai restaurants which is to say it is good but not exceptionally better. * Piing pork shoulder - the pork was well seasoned and grilled. The accompanying sauce was extremely salty. A little dip is more than enough before becoming too salty to eat. Price was reasonable and portion is generous. Nice entree to share. I would recommend. $24 * Chuenh Paa sa Moun Pai crispy catfish. I was pleasantly surprised to find this entree still very crispy. There were three pieces for $28. The spicy fish sauce is very salty and I'm thankful it came in a separate container. Very small amount is sufficient to complement the crispy fried fish.

Ok updating my previous post- it wasn't Michelin Star but it should be! Food consistently stays flavorful and food af! Portions were just about right for what you are paying for. Perfect blend of tangy and spicy and savory. Will always come back here when I'm in the area!

Thip Khao is rich, soulful Lao flavors that feel both deeply traditional and exciting. Every dish is packed with heat, funk, and freshness, clearly made with intention and care. The menu encourages sharing and it's definitely a must to order family-style. From the bold spices to the vibrant textures, it's a meal that lingers with you long after you leave. A must-visit for anyone who loves food with depth and personality. A good place to try out for a book club, etc. Ordered: - Tam Som ( Classic Papaya Salad) - Kee Mao - Naem Khao - Gaeng Phet - Pun Mieng - Khao Niew Ma- Moung Note: if you don't handle spice, make sure to ask to adjust the spice levels.

I'll definitely be stopping by often to grab some to go for my home-cooked meals! I'll be dipping everything with Jeow Bong! The fried catfish were nicely fried with a perfect coating. Definitely a dish to get. The pork shoulder is another dish to get. Nicely seasoned with sticky rice. Their version of pad thai is uniquely different than Thai. A bit more sweet but the lime makes it better. Wife wanted to try bua loy dessert. It is a warm sweet dessert that balanced out all the salty flavors of the dishes. Something to try as well. Flavor are still the same. The dishes we order were too much for 2 of us. Was seated by a delightful young lady, and found the decor and layout to be quite pleasing; modest by elegant. As for the fare, it was indeed quite worth the walk. Ordered a bowl of Tom Yum and the Pad Thai Mun Goong. The Tom Yum was solid and quite flavorful, a flux of tangy lemongrass with the oniony sweetness of steeped scallions, and enoki mushrooms to provide some heartiness. The Pad Thai Mun Goong was a chef specialty pad Thai made with stir fried rice noodle, prawns shrimp tomalley oil (a crucial element for this version), egg and bean sprouts, naturally topped with green onions, peanuts and a lime for squeezing, and this also was quite phenomenal. Savory, sweet, a little tingle of sourness from the citrus in the mid-palate, and the juicy, briny shrimp balancing the dense carbs and rich flavorful sauce. All-in-all, I was well pleased this visit. As this is Padaek's second location, I hope they don't expand too much further/quickly and compromise on quality.

To start with the positives, everyone we interacted with was incredibly nice and pleasant. The staff was welcoming, and there was nothing negative to say about their attitude or customer service. However, the overall service was oddly slow. The restaurant wasn't crowded, yet everything seemed to take much longer than expected. For drinks, I ordered a Cosmopolitan and my girlfriend had a beer. Both were fine, but nothing particularly memorable. We ordered the crab rangoons, spring rolls, shrimp in garlic sauce, and the Tom Yum noodle bowl. The crab rangoons were fried perfectly, but there wasn't any noticeable crab in them--just hot cream cheese filling. The spring rolls were okay, though they were extremely greasy, with oil pooling on the plate. My girlfriend enjoyed the Tom Yum noodle bowl, but she wished the egg had been prepared differently. It was fully hard-boiled, whereas we were expecting a softer, more traditional preparation. Unfortunately, the shrimp in garlic sauce was the biggest disappointment. The fish sauce flavor was so overpowering that it masked everything else. I ended up feeling ill and couldn't finish the dish. Another issue was the temperature inside the restaurant. It was extremely warm, to the point that I had to step outside for some fresh air. Overall, the people were genuinely kind, and I can see why others enjoy this restaurant. While I wouldn't personally recommend it based on my experience, I also wouldn't be opposed to returning if friends wanted to go. I would simply order different menu items next time.
