Wow! Everything we had here was absolutely delicious, including the cocktails! We chose vegetarian options, and I was delighted to find that the tofu in each dish was prepared in a different way that suited what it was paired with. The Pad Kee Mao is always a favorite, but the curry was a surprise star of the show, especially with the eggplant and tofu. We weren't asked for a spice level, but I was glad to find that it was spiced just right for my palette. This place is loud and hopping but still made for a good place to catch up.

Back again to say that Thip Khao's mee kathi and sesame sticky rice dessert is officially one of my favorite meals in DC.

Chicken hearts. 10/10! Def worth trying if you haven't had them before

You know you're in a good southeast Asian restaurant when the first thing you smell is fish sauce when you walk through the door. Thip Khao offers a variety of dishes and you'll find something for everyone! Unique finds like chicken hearts and classics such as larb

What a wonderful spot!! *drool* - and gluten free people, you'll have many options (which are labeled on their menu as well). However, I would be very straight forward about how you respond to cross contact - as our server mentioned that some have cross contact and some don't. I am less sensitive to cross contact. ^After that is taken care of, expect to loveeee your food! So delicious- I think I scraped each of my plates clean. Can't wait to return!

My wife and I recently went to Thip Khao for a weeknight dinner after not having gone for several years and had a good experience. We were seated immediately at our reservation time and got solid service. My wife and I shared the Tam Som salad, which was delicious but extremely spicy (even for those with a high spice tolerance)! I got the Pad Phet Paa for my main dish. While everything was well-cooked, the catfish in particular could have used more flavor. I would recommend Thip Khao for a nice date night or to celebrate a milestone!

Ok updating my previous post- it wasn't Michelin Star but it should be! Food consistently stays flavorful and food af! Portions were just about right for what you are paying for. Perfect blend of tangy and spicy and savory. Will always come back here when I'm in the area!

Venue is well-decorated. Nicely lit, interesting wall art and decor fitting the restaurant. May get a bit loud. Loved the laab and the curries. Definitely just the right amount of spice for me. Good sized portions and the sticky rice served in the woven thing was cool. Also enjoyed their tofu dish. Packed on a holiday weekday night. Definitely recommended.

We didn't have a reservation for Thip Khao, as they were fully reserved all the way until Dec 28. We decided to chance it and get to the restaurant right at opening time at 5pm, and we were smart to do that. There were already other people here, likely having the same idea. After we got seated, I noticed that there were people who ended up standing at the bar - I think they got food, not just drinks. Thip Khao is always delicious, but not as good as the very first time I came to this restaurant - perhaps the flavors hit differently once you've had them before? Either way, my star dish of the night was the Muu Haeng, the pork jerky - I had this once before but had forgotten which dish I had gotten. In the past, I had gotten the Piing thinking it was this dish, but was always slightly disappointed. Don't get me wrong, the Piing pork shoulder is perfectly fine! But the pork jerky is a little bit crunchy... hard to explain, but it's really good, and not too dry. I wish they provided more rice, dishes came with either a ball of sticky rice, which is difficult to share with a party, or a small bowl of white rice. So you may want to consider getting extra rice, to avoid being meated out. As an aside, the restaurant is quite dark, and it was almost hard to see our food until we switched tables.

Disappointing take-out experience. We ordered 5 dishes and most were underwhelming or too salty. Total cost of these 5 entrees was $136. After adding tip you're well over $160. Given the quality of the food and how overly salty they were, it was a disappointing experience especially given the high praise by others. * Laab chicken - this is normally a refreshing appetizer but what we received was literally inedible. We tried a couple bites and even had it with rice to cut down the saltiness, but we couldn't do it. I've had this dish *many* times and this is by far the worst. The saltiness overwhelms all other flavors in this dish. If I were dining it, I would absolutely return this dish. * Kee Mao chicken - chicken was dry and noodles were clumped together. Overall flavor and seasoning was OK at best. I'd hope this dish is much better if you have it dining in. * Gang Phet beef - this was our favorite dish of everything we ordered. Red curry flavor was balanced and the beef and vegetables were delicious. I would reorder and recommend to others. This dish is comparable to many other reputable Laotian and Thai restaurants which is to say it is good but not exceptionally better. * Piing pork shoulder - the pork was well seasoned and grilled. The accompanying sauce was extremely salty. A little dip is more than enough before becoming too salty to eat. Price was reasonable and portion is generous. Nice entree to share. I would recommend. $24 * Chuenh Paa sa Moun Pai crispy catfish. I was pleasantly surprised to find this entree still very crispy. There were three pieces for $28. The spicy fish sauce is very salty and I'm thankful it came in a separate container. Very small amount is sufficient to complement the crispy fried fish.

Thip Khao is rich, soulful Lao flavors that feel both deeply traditional and exciting. Every dish is packed with heat, funk, and freshness, clearly made with intention and care. The menu encourages sharing and it's definitely a must to order family-style. From the bold spices to the vibrant textures, it's a meal that lingers with you long after you leave. A must-visit for anyone who loves food with depth and personality. A good place to try out for a book club, etc. Ordered: - Tam Som ( Classic Papaya Salad) - Kee Mao - Naem Khao - Gaeng Phet - Pun Mieng - Khao Niew Ma- Moung Note: if you don't handle spice, make sure to ask to adjust the spice levels.

We got to Thip Khao right as the restaurant opened at 5 pm and we were promptly seated. It didn't get too busy until around 6 pm. (There were no reservations available for the night we wanted to go, but plenty of walk-in seating for early dinner.) The food was delicious but a bit overpriced for the amount of food we got per dish. In the end, we ended up with 5 dishes between 3 people (we had a small amount of leftover food in the end). We didn't curate our orders properly and ended up with too many meat dishes. We ordered: - Muu Haeng (pork jerky) - Beef kee mao (flat rice noodles) - Chenh Laa sa Moun Pai (crispy catfish) - Piing (pork shoulder) with sticky rice - Naem Khao (crispy coconut rice salad) The stand outs were the pork jerky (very flavorful and chewy) and crispy catfish (excellent fish sauce and texture). The crispy coconut salad was nice too, but there was def not enough of it to justify the price ($21). The pork shoulder needed a bigger sticky rice portion to go with it; taste-wise it was just fine. Service was good. The restaurant needs more lighting; the tables in the middle of the restaurant near the doors were nearly in the dark.

This was a great Laos place. I've never tried this food before and I would definitely come back again if I was in the area. My friends and I got various noddle and rice dishes. We all loved the food. The beverages were great too. I didn't love the sticky rice but that is just due to my own taste. The ambiance and service was great too. Everyone was very attentive and while there is a lot of seating, I could still hear my friends very clearly.

Thip Khao was a delightful experience from start to finish. We chose it because it's part of the Chase Restaurant Collection, and it absolutely lived up to expectations. The service was warm and attentive, the atmosphere casual and relaxing. The food, however, was the true standout. Every dish impressed, each one bursting with flavor and personality. The steamed catfish wrapped in banana leaves stole the show, tender, aromatic, and perfectly seasoned. Eating the fish with sticky rice by hand was a fun, authentic touch that added to the whole experience. If you find yourself in Washington, DC, Thip Khao is well worth a visit.

The interior is cozy, when it's busy, you sit kinda close to other patrons, sometimes back to back. The decoration is very cute and true to the theme of the food they are presenting, I love the ambiance. We tried two dishes, one is a Laotian version of the Tom Yum soup, which has a strong kick to it: spicier than the typical Thai Tom Yum Soup if you like spicy food. We ordered it mild but it is still very spicy to us. We also sampled a Malaysian dish which is a fried fish sitting in this curry sauce base. Very tasty! I like the carefully curated menu of this restaurant, they pick 1-2 dishes from each SEA country to represent their cuisine and you can get a taste of everything from everywhere if you are with a bigger group of friends! For Entree, we got the Kimin Paa and Thom Khem Ribs. The Branzino was large and fried perfectly. The accompanying sauce was delicious. The ribs is tender and falls off the bones. Reminds me of Chinese stew ribs. We cap it off with the night with coconut sticky rice with white rabbit gelato. That brings back memories of the white rabbit candy with that sticky rice paper cover that I use to stick it to my lip. Great food with excellent service. I have to say the menu was very overwhelming with so many options and only a few things I was familiar with. To start, the drinks- easy choice I opted for the Sweet tiger Taro! The drink was not too sweet and very aesthetically pleasing. My husband and I ordered the crispy chive cake, LFC , Bermuda Triangle and mussels ahoy for apps. They were all delicious. The fried items were so crispy and light! The mussels were delicate and not overcooked! We also ordered the papaya salad which I do order where ever I go, as this is my favorite and this one did not disappoint. It was light, refreshing, crunchy and tangy all at once! The MVP of this meal was the Kua Kua noodles. This dish is overwhelming when it arrives as it's loaded with the grilled octopus, shrimp, noodles and sides but it is worth every penny!! Everything was cooked perfectly and works so well with each other! The staff were also very friendly, each one checking in on us and all working well together! The fried catfish were nicely fried with a perfect coating. Definitely a dish to get. The pork shoulder is another dish to get. Nicely seasoned with sticky rice. Their version of pad thai is uniquely different than Thai. A bit more sweet but the lime makes it better. Wife wanted to try bua loy dessert. Also tried the crab noodles after reading great reviews about it. It definitely was tasty with the oyster-sauce and soy-sauce based flavor profile, but didn't wow me like the catfish dish.
