This is solely a rating for happy hour which was very mid. The drinks were a little watered down and the sushi was just not good. We tried spicy tuna and salmon. Salmon is a tad bit better but not by much. I did get the yellowtail hamachi roll off the normal which was decent but nowhere near the $17-$18 they were charging. Their green beans and Brussels sprouts were flavorful but nothing to write home about. The dirty tots? Literally just tots with kewpie mayo on it lol. Nothing special. Tbh green beans probs my fav out of all their dishes which is sad. Their Tokyo punch bowl...it's okay. Kind of tastes medicinal. I wouldn't come back unfortunately. Cute spot. There is a patio out back that is enclosed. When I arrived (approx 530 PM EST) it was completely empty inside. The bartender asked if I wanted to sit on the patio out back I looked at him confused because it was rainy and cold. I asked "isn't it cold?" He didn't reply with anything relevant however that would have been an opportune time to say it was heated and enclosed. Anyways, the place opens at 5 PM EST so the lack of patrons wasn't alarming but noteworthy: happy hour goes until 10 PM EST I tried a few items from the happy hour menu and regular cocktail menu including the spicy tuna roll, red sangria, and the kankitsu. My friend ordered the Sapporo beer, bok choy, and veggie dumplings. The red sangria was sweet yet the right amount of fruity. The kankitsu had a sugar rim that I could have absolutely done without. The Yuzu was very prevalent in the drink, but it basically tasted like a sidecar. I ordered a side of eel sauce for my sushi roll but they gave me spicy mayo. I thought he just misheard me until I saw on the bill that I did order eel sauce and the mistake was on their part. The sushi roll itself was ok. It was missing something. I'm a big fan of Philadelphia rolls and I was hoping they had something close to it on the menu but they did not. I hope they add it in the future since they have all the ingredients to make it. The bok choy was bland. Even with the garlic and oyster sauce, something was missing. My friend ordered another order of dumplings so I assume she liked it. Overall it has potential. I would return to try other rolls. The service was ok - we kept having to find the bartender(s) to ask for more items. Maybe the service is more attentive in the back patio. read more

Great vibes on the patio for happy hour! I've been coming to Tokyo Pearl since their soft opening years go -- they've changed variations a ton over the years but finally found their grove. We arrived on a Thursday around 5pm to an empty patio but it was packed by 530. Easy to walk in and grab a table inside though. Happy is a great deal, $7 drinks, apps, and sushi rolls and goes until 10pm. Food portions are a good size -- 2 rolls and an app is good for a meal. Had the salmon and shrimp tempura rolls. Both tasty though the tempura was a little greasy. Also tried the seaweed salad, tots, and momo chicken, all good. The lychee martinis overall were good though depending on the batch/bartender could be a little lime forward. Vibes were fun --- upbeat house music mostly and not too loud outside so very easy to talk. Service was great. Really friendly and attentive and they told us about the open bar for women from 10pm-midnight on Fridays so we stopped by to check that out the next day too. The open bar drinks were very weak but to be expected for a free drink. The place was WAY too loud for us at night (we went to a concert later that night and noted toyko pearl was louder so be prepared or bring earplugs). DJ was playing good jams but no one was dancing. Overall, would definitely come back for happy hour but would skip for nightlife. read more

Great atmosphere and lovely decorations. See their "sushi garden" in the back of the restaurant! There is some lovely seating in egg chairs for duos and some decorated tables for 3-4 people. All highlighted with seasonal decorations and lights. I came during Halloween season so there were colored spiderwebs on everything. The atmosphere was amazing. Service was fine. The food... not so great. It was edible at least, but portions were small with high prices and the quality was terrible. I tasted both a raw salmon dish and the chicken teriyaki and both were mediocre. Don't come here for the food. read more

My friend and I were seated outside in a hanging chairs which were super fun in theory, but then we both were about a foot away from the table! Didn't really work well for us, so we asked to be moved to a regular table and they kindly accommodated us. We took at advantage of HH, however not sure if you're saving a bunch of money-- also fyi 22% gratuity is automatically added to your bill. We ordered $7 spicy tuna roll and cucumber avocado roll. Both were fine. We also tried the momo chicken where you get two skewers for $7. We also got the chicken dumplings which were tasty with the sauces on the plate but $7 seemed steep for just two of them for HH. Lastly we ordered the lychee martinis and they were delicious for $9 each. Service was fine, they clear away your plates AS soon as you finish. Did you want that awesome dumpling sauces on the plate? Sorry they just took your plate away super fast! The bill came to $60.72 for two people for HH with the gratuity included. this is a cute, affordable happy hour spot downtown! right between dupont and farragut metro stops. easy to find - one side of the block is the indoor / nightclub entrance, the other is the patio entrance. $7 happy hour food/drink specials lasting until 7 or 10pm depending on the day. good service and fun ambience. they have heaters on the patio. the food was GOOD - not exceptional. sushi quality was mid. the nutella sushi is not worth it. we were a bit annoyed bc it was veryyyy unclear that a 22% tip had already been added (party of 2, mind you) so we had accidentally tipped 20% on TOP of that. sunk cost. i would go back bc the prices truly can't be beat. read more

Never thought I be held hostage by a restaurant and still have to pay a mandatory 22% tip for a single person. Went there for a drinks and a sushi roll. Roll can only be described as warm, tasteless, and crunchy. I only got through three pieces before I had to stop. Drinks were reasonable though due to a Thursday special making it 50% off. This actually brought the bottle down to nearly market price. The problem started when I wanted to leave I asked two waiters over the course of 30 minutes for my check so I could leave and they apparently just both forgot about it. Ended up going inside and being embarrassed when one of their machines couldn't read any my credit cards and had go back to the bar to finally pay. read more

Went for the $7 Happy Hour Menu at Tokyo Pearl with friends and had a wide variety of their food/drink. We sat in their booth which was incredibly colorful and decked out with cherry blossoms and comfortable seating. As for the food, it felt quite mid-tier for a Japanese restaurant in the city. I started off with a miso soup then moved on to the edamame with sea salt, and Japanese Dirty Tots. All selections tasted okay - nothing particularly good enough to write home about. When it came to the rolls, my friends and I ordered the Spicy Salmon, Spicy Tuna, and California. While it was fresh, again, it was just alright in terms of flavor. Despite the food, I found the drink menu to be far more enticing. We started off with the Tokyo Pearl Punch, Lychee Martinis, and then finished with the Espresso Martinis (one of the best I've had!). I particularly enjoyed how the Espresso was creamy and semi-sweet, just as I enjoy in my typical coffee order. If you visit, the Lychee and Espresso Martinis are worth a try. The service was speedy and picked up throughout the evening. Overall, a fun place to check out in Dupont. I'd be interested to see what it's like during the nighttime! read more

I recently went here with three friends for their happy hour ($7 select sushi rolls and appetizers) and got to sit outside in Tokyo Pearl's nice garden area. Our service was terrible-we had to ask our server 4-5 times for forks, it took a while to order and get our food, and we had to chase our server down to get a credit card back after we paid the check. Additionally, Tokyo Pearl builds in an automatic 22 percent service charge, which we did not appreciate given the poor service. I split the fried chicken bao buns with a friend and got the chicken dumplings, a spicy tuna roll, and a spicy avocado roll. The food was OK-it was a bit salty, but what I would expect for a happy hour. The sushi was the highlight, and came with a good amount of ginger and wasabi. read more

At first, just want to say, this is one of the only spots in DC that does happy hour on Sunday. And they actually have reasonable happy hour drinks and menu items. The bok choy was amazing!! As were the chicken dumplings. They were a bit spicy, but I enjoyed the spice. The espresso martini was quite delicious as well as the Punch bowl. Please know that that punch bowl requires minimum of three people. It is a large glass of alcohol. I also just love the outdoor decor and inside as well. A fun and charming restaurant in DuPont Circle, Tokyo Pearl is a great spot for a dinner with friends, a date, or just an upscale hang! The food is quite expensive for the quality, but some of the options are quite good. We got a shrimp tempura roll with crab and the fish Heaven roll. Both were tasty! I was disappointed by the quantity compared to the high price points but liked the flavor. The edamame was delicious and very plentiful. The rock shrimp appetizer was my favorite--perfectly lightly crispy with a great sauce mixed in. Overall, this is a pretty good spot! The outdoor space here is adorable--perfectly instagrammable in a non-tacky way. However, at least the bench seats for the booths were extremely uncomfortable. They were too short with very straight backs and I actually had to take a break and stand every few minutes. If you dine here, I would ask for a table and chairs. There were also swinging chairs, which were cute, but not sure how they would be to eat in. As far as service goes, the gentleman who was assigned to refill our water was A++. He was on top of his game, making sure our glasses never dropped below half full, which was great on a hot day. Our server, on the other hand... we hardly saw her. It took forever to order anything, be it the first or second round of food or drinks, and to get our check. Very frustrating to have a 22% automatic gratuity added on the bill after such abysmal service. Since when is 22% the norm? And if it hadn't been automatic, I would have handed the water guy cash, and tipped the server less, in all honesty. We also had a weird experience being seated by the host. We arrived right at four when they opened and asked for a table for four and they asked if we had a reservation, to which we said no. Despite only one table of many being occupied at the time, he said he needed to discuss it and disappeared in the back for what felt like five minutes. In the meantime, we went online and made a 4:30 PM reservation. When he finally came back, we told him, and he seated us right away. We thought perhaps there were five o'clock reservations they would need the tables for or something, but no--over the course of our time there, only two more tables filled up. The place was practically empty but they didn't seem to have an interest in seating us without a reservation. The only good part about this place was the price. Most drinks and several food items were $7, with a few "premium" drinks being $9. Unfortunately, everything was highly mediocre. I had recalled coming here once before, a while ago, and ordering a lychee drink I didn't like, but (thankfully?) the waitress had knocked it over, so they removed it from my bill. This time, I tried two new drinks, which didn't impress me any more. The yuzu margarita was weak and the espresso martini (which was $9) was overly sweet. The sushi roll was fine (I would recommend the spicy salmon over the spicy tuna), as was the bok choi. Overall, I can't imagine going back, especially not for happy hour. read more

I had an okay experience at Tokyo Pearl downtown DC. I was invited to celebrate my bday and was seated where the external attachment is...I was freezing, even with the cover and a few heat lamps. I asked to be moved inside of the restaurant within the first 15 mins of being there. I then ordered my food, but it didn't come out for almost 45 mins and all I ordered was a simple eel & cucumber roll ( not pictured, I was starving). However, the bartender was regularly bringing out drinks for my friends when we had barely gotten food to the table. He was doing his best and made great drink recommendations, which was the positive part of my experience. Good vibes for outdoor seating and happy hour that runs till 10PM during Tuesdays to Sundays! The menu states otherwise - 5-7PM only but actually lasts longer than that. There are ample options for happy hour and I got the Japanese Zucchini, Dirty Tots, as well as Momo Chicken (chicken skewers). The Yuzu Margarita is pretty refreshing too. This review is of service- I visited this venue recently and was shocked by the behavior of one of the bathroom security staff. After waiting over 30 minutes in line, I witnessed him allow a group of four women to cut the entire line. When I politely knocked on the door to raise the concern, he became aggressive and threatened to "drag me outside," claiming "this is his place." As a paying guest, especially of $400 bottle service I expect basic respect and safety-especially from staff. I was not intoxicated (because i had spent so much time on the line) nor was I being disruptive. I told him he had no right to threaten me physically, and his response only escalated the situation. No one should feel unsafe or intimidated by staff at a nightlife venue. He had a Russian accent and attempted to intimidate me with his size. This kind of behavior is unacceptable especially against women, and I hope management takes this seriously. People deserve better. read more
