I had a great time when I visited Kaz. It's a beautiful and cozy space. Arriving a little less than an hour before close, the staff was so accommodating, making sure we were able to order and have enough time to eat. Everything that I tried was delicious and I enjoyed trying different types of sake with the sake flight. I'll definitely be back!

For me and my friend, this is one of those indulgent restaurants that we would go to for a celebration. Everything is just a little too expensive to eat regularly, but that's okay because I would say that the price is very fair for the quality that you get. The sushi and bento box was expertly prepared. The rice ratios for the nigiri and rolls were perfect, the sashi was well cut to an even thickness. For the bento, all of the components were delicious! The rice topping was nice and simple. I'm still thinking about whats in their katsu sauce its so tangy against the crispy chicken. The teriyaki salmon alone is so good, there is a nice interplay of smokey and sweet which pairs well with the fleshiness of the fish. Each side dish felt delicately arranged and with their own uniqueness like a pink potato salad to an expertly tempura soft tofu. The aura of this restaurant is very alluring. Its kind of tucked within a busy street but the lights are ambient and dim, the vibes are good and we see a lot of people do their business meetings here.

Kaz Sushi Bistro is so amazing! This place is my favorite non-michelin star sushi restaurant in DC. I've never come across walu or arctic char nirgiri before coming here - and now I can't get enough! My favorite fish of the night was definitely the artic char - it resembles salmon but is so much smoother and the flavor is slightly sweeter. The hawaiian walu was also devine - sweet and silky. I am hooked on artic char and ever since, I have been on the hunt to find some wherever I go! The kaz tasting menu is so fun and creative. We chose 0011 and it blew us away. Each piece was fresh and tasty. We kept ordering extra walu and artic char because it was that good. We finished the dinner with delicious dessert. My mango-coconut panna cotta was creamy and tart! The banana tempura was filled with sweet and warm bananas. The service was great, though they kind of dropped the ball near the end of our dinner, and we had to flag them down. I highly recommend Kaz Sushi Bistro. I can't wait to come back!

I've heard good things about Kaz and was excited to check it out during lunch hours. Clean, spacious restaurant with lots of seating! Close to the orange, silver metro line too. I'd recommend going for lunch for the lunch deals! Good cuts of fish! Super fresh, but portions are small for the price. Average price of a roll is $9-$11 and roll sizes are smaller than average. Overall, this place has good sushi, but it didn't wow me, especially for the price I paid.

A wonderful sushi restaurant that is on the higher-end and more upscale than it needs to be. The staff are really nice and the restaurant provides cozy and warm vibes, but the food was on the pricier end. We had their specialty nigiri but found them to not be all too special; however, the winning dish of the night went to their salmon roll with pickled pineapple and basil. Somehow, that flavor palette blew my mind, and I still can't stop thinking about how delicious it was.

Crunchy shrimp roll

Yes, you're seeing this photo correctly, and yes, it is six crunchy shrimp rolls. The crunchy shrimp roll is the greatest piece of sushi on God's green Earth. Nothing compares in terms of taste, concept, composition, construction or crunch. The rice ratio? Perfection. The vibes? Immaculate. The service? Impeccable. This restaurant experience stands at the top of my list in the DMV and I will continue to come back. And yes, I will continue to order the crunchy shrimp roll.

Made reservations for a Friday evening dinner and ordered some rolls (mainly tuna, eel, salmon, and shrimp tempura). I was glad they had a mocktail option but it tasted like lemonade and nothing else. They had tasting menu options but the price was definitely higher than other comparable options in other DC sushi restaurants. The interior is very cozy though.

I was very excited to visit Kaz for lunch. While the restaurant got busier while I was there, it was mostly empty at noon. Price-wise, Kaz is on-point given the quality of fish. I ordered chu-toro sashimi (they were out of otoro) and the following nigiri: uni, lobster, seared salmon, and sake poached scallop. I also ordered the grilled baby octopus and received a complimentary miso soup. I am just starting my journey into the world of octopus, and I've never had baby octopus before. While I enjoyed my appetizer, it wasn't stunning, and I'll probably choose an additional order of nigiri instead in the future. It was nicely seasoned but a bit too chewy for my liking. The miso soup was above average, but due to the humidity outside, I was really not in the mood for soup. Uni nigiri - So delicious! A supple portion, balanced perfectly with the rice. Chu-toro sashimi - So delicious! High quality, but I will likely not choose this even if otoro is unavailable in the future because it's just not the same. Lobster nigiri - I found the lobster to be a bit dry and not very flavorful. Seared salmon nigiri - The salmon was too seared for my liking. I was expecting the salmon to be kissed by a blowtorch, but this was more along the lines of baked/charred salmon. Sake poached scallop - I've never had this before and was curious. The poaching eliminated the slightly bitter flavor that scallops typically have, but the preparation resulted in the scallop not having much flavor at all. Kaz is definitely on the higher end of sushi establishments in town, but I think I have too many other favorites to return. However, surely this is the best sushi in the Foggy Bottom area.

I went for restaurant week and will say that it was a ton of food for the price! I loved the layered napolean app and the wings. the avocado and scallop ceviche were alright. most of the rolls were pretty good but I was expecting a lot better, but I didn't enjoy the crab or lobster rolls. the bluefin otoro & seared salmon nigiri were great but the rest were again kind of disappointing. desserts (mango panna cotta & kokuto ice cream) were pretty good. overall I was hoping for a lot better, none of the fish struck me as suuper fresh or high quality. I would be open to going back and sticking to the things that I enjoyed this time but the restaurant week menu was nice to try a bunch of things

I was impressed and by the experience and would definitely come back for a Japanese meal that did not focus solely on ramen or sushi. The ambiance is well done, and the service was excellent. Our waiter was very attentive and able to answer any of our questions. To share, we got the spicy salmon roll, Karaage appetizer, and eggplant cheese appetizer. The spicy tuna roll was the most lackluster of the dishes, but the fish was fresh and the portion was decent for $12. The karaage appetizer was excellent. The chicken was moist and the coating was crunchy and super hot. The eggplant cheese was a surprise highlight of the meal. Pieces of eggplant in a melted cheese bowl made of eggplant was a simple combination. That was a very pleasant mix of textures. The pork Katsu was a highlight of the meal. Unfortunately forgot to take a picture, but the coding was super crispy and the portion size was pretty solid. The Unagidon or grilled eel bowl was also very well made and tasted great with the pickled ginger and seasoning on the side. The set came with miso soup which was very nice as well. My companions also got drinks which they said were well priced and good quality. Our overall meal cost somewhere in the range of $160 before tip which was reasonable given all of the items that we got. I look forward to my next visit!

The layout is interesting -- there's an upstairs when you walk in, but the sushi bar and a good bit of seating are downstairs. The menu is pretty straightforward with a mix of hand rolls, appetizers, specialty rolls, nigiri/sashimi, and traditional rolls. They also have a few solid combo deals, though I usually prefer trying a variety of items instead. Service was quick, which is always appreciated at a sushi spot. We ordered a few specialty rolls, two traditional rolls, and a couple orders of sashimi, all served together on one platter. The rolls were a great size -- filling without being overly large. The sashimi was fresh, and the traditional rolls really balanced out the meal nicely. The flounder and tuna sashimi were both excellent, and the California roll made with real crab was simple, fresh, and really satisfying. The total came out somewhere in the $70 range, so after tip and splitting it between two people, it was about $40 each to try multiple rolls and sashimi. Definitely fair pricing for the quality and amount of food. This spot had been on my list for a while, so I'm glad I finally made it over. I'd recommend checking out the menu beforehand so you can go in with a game plan and try the items that stand out most to you.

I have been there three times. My wife's family is in St. Louis. The chef moved to Washington, D.C. from there. His establishment in the Midwest was not bad. But his new venture in the capitol is excellent. I would gladly go anytime the opportunity presented itself. The only issue is reservations at the tiny place. (They have a time limit for tables.) They offer standard fare for a izakaya. They also have sashimi and sushi (that is not always available on a pub menu), and it is among the best you'd find in the city. The dish that has been written about in the NY Times is the ara yaki. That is prepared from leftovers, scraps that otherwise might be tossed as trash: heads, jaws, fins, bones, etc., broiled with a bit of salt. The explanation is insufficient. For this by itself, the restaurant is worth visiting. It will make you want to try to prepare the same quality from leavings. I'd bet it is like much else: simple in concept, easy to execute poorly or at a level that would be deemed middling, and frustrating or maddening to try to perfect. That also is true with the only imperfection, which was the tamago. Brought at the end, which is a custom (it can be the first course or the last course), the omelet was more rustic. It would not have passed muster with Jiro of the acclaimed documentary. The issue was the shape; it was crude. But by any standard short of perfectionism, the meal was great.
