For Christmas Eve, my wife, eight-year-old daughter, and I made a reservation at this small sushi spot along Barracks Row. After many accolades and Michelin nods, it was an honor to dine at Sushi Hachi. Here's our experience. 1) Food: To start, we ordered the miso soup and edamame. Both were full of flavor and well prepared, especially the edamame. Sometimes the ones from the grocery store can be slimy. These are not. They are perfect. To eat, I got the shrimp tempura, Chicken Kara-age, and the 8th Street sushi. My wife ordered the Chef's Sushi Platter and swore she will crave the Yellowtail Cilantro Roll. Our daughter enjoyed the California Roll. 2) Drinks: Their cocktails hit each end of the liquor spectrum. My wife enjoyed their Manhattan. The Summer cocktail was a tad sweet, which I found refreshing and unique. 3) Service: It's excellent. The timing, warmth, and attention to our daughter was spot on. 4) Space: It's simple yet inviting inside one long dining room with the sushi counter in the way back. 5) Area: Along Barracks Row, Sushi Hachi is near many other restaurants and local shops. One of the oldest military bases in the country is across the street. There's street parking- paid and free- throughout the neighborhood.
The perfect lunch date! My friend and I work from home and we're both craving sushi (most spots do not open until dinner) so we lucked up when we found one open for lunch. Located in the Capitol Hill area, its almost unassuming unless you know what you're looking for. The space was clean & quaint - very quiet - only a few patrons. Our server was so attentive and made his presence known frequently. They cleaned our table after every dish so nothing piled up and constantly asked for feedback which we were happy to offer (no notes). We ordered a few apps - Hamachi, Fried Rice, Spicy Tuna Avocado 8pcs w/ Nigiri Black Snapper, Snapper Miso Ceviche, Edamame, Seaweed Salad with "Dreams Come True" & "Sexy Lip" cocktails to wash it down. We loved everything except the nigiri black snapper which was an acquired taste. This is somewhere I would absolutely return and try their dinner menu
I appreciated that we could walk in on a Monday night without reservations and not feel underdressed. (We had been walking around DC all day) My husband and I each got the chef sushi platter, I thought it was plenty of food, but my husband also ordered an extra salmon roll afterwards. Everything that came in the sushi platter was delicious, though I thought the ceviche was a little too sweet. However, the sushi roll that we got at the end had too much rice (The ratio was off) and was kind of a disappointing way to end the night.
Sushi Hachi is a really cozy restaurant nestled in the historic Eastern Market neighborhood. We were able to find parking right in front of the restaurant on a Thursday evening. We were seated quickly at the bar. There weren't too many people so they had plenty of seating. I opted for their Chef's sushi platter. For $30 I felt like you got a lot for what you paid for. Also their regular sushi rolls are super affordable too. Love that! - Edamame was fine nothing special - miso soup was also fine, kind of salty - snapper miso ceviche, loved how colorful it was and the chips that came with it. I do wish it had a little bit of a kick to it. It was a bit too sweet for my liking. - 5 piece nigiri. Tasty. My favorite was the salmon followed by the tuna - Yellowtail cilantro roll. My favorite of the night however it wasn't anything that I would go out of my way for I loved the plates and the small ceramic glasses that they give you with your hot sake. And our waitress was friendly and helpful. Also note that Sushi Hachi was voted one of the best sushi restaurants in DC. Not sure what year this was but congratulations. Thank you!
Soooo good! I'm in DC often for work and I'm always in the lookout for a good spot for lunch or dinner. This restaurant is in the Capitol Hill area and near Navy Yard where I stayed. The restaurant was not busy on a Monday night. The staff was friendly and helpful. They got me and my dinner date sat quickly and got our orders out quickly too. I ordered a couple sushi rolls and edamame. Also ordered the crème brûlée for dessert. If you're looking for delicious, well made sushi for dinner in a modern place!!
This place is such a gem in Capitol Hill! They offer incredible sushi rolls for just $8, along with great specials and platters that are perfect for sharing or sampling a bit of everything. There are also some standout specialty rolls--my favorite was the Capitol Roll. I could've eaten 15 of them--they were that good! The atmosphere strikes a nice balance: it's casual, but with a slightly elevated feel--somewhere between a laid-back sushi spot and a more upscale restaurant. Definitely a go-to for quality sushi at a great price.
I appreciated Sushi Hachi for seating me (with no reservation) and serving me quickly. I visited for the first time yesterday night before attending a show at the Miracle Theater and was in a bit of a rush, but was still able to enjoy my meal because of how quick and efficient the service was. The food was delicious. I ordered the Chef's Special which, as a nigiri lover, allowed me to try a number of different menu items I wanted without having to order so much food. The Yellowtail Cilantro roll was my favorite. The Snapper Miso ceviche was a bit on the sweet side for me with the yuzu, but the presentation made up for it.
Clean, enjoyable food. Terrific ambience and attentive service. Colleague and I stopped through here yesterday. Had it bookmarked for a while based on Yelp reviews. The interiors are beautiful. Service was friendly although it started a bit - odd. They redeemed themselves nicely. I had a CHEF'S PLATTER that showed up looking more like a poké bowl - arranged on a plate. Nicer selection of seafood. There was a piece of fried eel and a piece of smoked octopus along with the other sushi. Nice touch. My colleague got a couple of sushi rolls. The drinks were nice, although the menu is limited on the drink side. They only have about five options. We had miso soup, and edamame (nicely salted) and I had a wonderful SNAPPER CEVICHE. I thought that sounded novel and it definitely tasted as good as I expected it would. Probably my favorite on the table. We also had: +Tasting Platter--EDAMAME, Today's Miso Soup, Veggie (sliced zucchini ) Tempura, Chirashi Bowl (Today's Best Sashimi 10 Pieces Over A Bed Of Sushi Rice), + Shrimp Tempura (needed seasoning) Drink: Summer 夏 Brugal Anejo rum / lime juice/ blueberry/ mints/ club soda ^^ I had two of these they were so good. I like this place and will come back.
Came here for lunch and had a great experience! We came during the off hour time so it was pretty empty. We got seated very quickly and the sushi was served quickly as well. Staff were friendly and very attentive and the ambiance is nice. It's like a typical sushi place. Great to come for a date or with friends. In terms of food, we ordered their salmon avocado roll, Alaska roll, and their salmon and yellow tail nigiri. All the fish was very fresh and super tasty. We even ordered an extra roll because the first few rolls were so good. To top it off, the food was priced really well so you'll definitely get the best bang for your buck. Would highly recommend!
I had a wonderful Mother's Day with my adult son, at Sushi Hachi. It was quiet, which is what I enjoy, while eating sushi, and thinking of Japanese culture. The sushi has always been fresh, beautifully presented, the dishes are so graceful, there were fresh tulips on each table, a perfect lunch with my most favorite first born. And, for the most part of it, we had the restaurant all to ourselves, on Mother's Day, who can ask for more? We had lunch at around 3:30, so it was not quite dinner time and a bit past lunch, for those of you who are thinking Oko, why was it empty on such a busy Sunday? I highly recommend this restaurant. Wonderful experience each time we went. Thank You!
Started with the Red Snapper ceviche. It was so good that I reverted to a fork to clear the bowl. I accompanied the meal with the house hot sake that paired well with the fish. It was a nice upgrade to my usual draft beer selection. I had two rolls and both were excellent. The spicy tuna avocado roll was superb and the yellowtail scallion roll was fresh and very tasty. I added a third roll, called the Alaska. It was a great combination and was the perfect way to end a celebratory evening. The service is always the star of the night at Sushi Hachi! My server was attentive and quick while looking calm and zen throughout. The managers/owners each stopped by the table and we talked about the neighborhood and I felt a connection to my Capitol Hill community. All-around it was an outstanding evening. Will return as often as I can!

First off, I want to thank the staff for being so humble, welcoming, and inviting. My daughter recently earned a promotion to Petty Officer Second Class in the Coast Guard, and I flew in from California to pin her. Looking for a great dinner spot to celebrate, we were both craving sushi. The atmosphere is nice and cozy, featuring a lovely brick wall on one side with bench seating, and a small bar on the other side. We started with miso soup, edamame, and warm hand towels before the meal, which was a wonderful touch. For main dishes, we ordered the sushi platter, tasting platter, and shrimp tempura. Everything was delicious--the sushi was so soft it practically melted in your mouth. Because it gets crowded quickly, we made reservations both nights we ate here. Booking between 6:00 PM and 7:00 PM seems to be the sweet spot! We had a fantastic experience and highly recommend it. ENJOY read more
This restaurant is super cute and chirashi bowl was good. It's perfect for date nights for sure. We came here on Sunday evening and were able to sit right away. The servers were very friendly and the food came out pretty quickly. Delux chirashi bowl was so pretty and good. Definitely recommend Chicken karage was little too floury for us. It was not crunch and it was just ok. Ordered rice to eat with karage for my son but it's not regular rice but sushi rice so it was sour for kids. Kids tempura udon was pretty good, recommend it. read more

Service was good and staff were friendly. The food took a bit longer to come out, so I recommend ordering everything at once. Sushi was okay overall, nothing exceptional but enjoyable. The restaurant is easy to find and prices are reasonable for what you get. read more

This is one of my family and I favorite sushi places! We orders take our shrimp crunchy and octopus nigiri. As always super fresh and delicious! Take out never takes along time! And I love how the restaurant never changes no matter how long it takes me to come back to visit. Always clean and staff super friendly! They located in Eastern Market. The prices are amazing too! read more

One of my new (to me) fav sushi places in DC! They have everything you'd want and the prices are unbeatable. It's super cute inside with lots of seating and very attentive staff; it's a great spot to go for a causal girls night or date night. The Spicy Tuna roll is a classic and the Dragon Roll is amazing. Most of their rolls are $8 (even their speciality rolls) and so good and fresh. Will be going back lots! read more

This is a very cute place for a date night. When the weathers nice, they open the large front window. This is nice for a breeze and for the vibes, but Capitol Hill has a healthy mosquito population and I was getting torn up while eating my dinner. The staff is very nice and friendly. They can help you decide on a dish or a drink and they're happy to take their time answering your questions. That being said, sometimes the service can be a little bit slow. The food was very tasty. I honestly did not like the rolls with the pico de gallo on top - I scraped the tomatoes off. I like the creativity, but tomatoes and raw fish are just not the vibe for me. One thing I love about this place is that the rolls are slightly smaller, and thus cheaper, meaning if you order a roll you don't like but don't like to waste food (like me), it's a light lift. The beers are cold and the wine is solid. I will absolutely be back for the rolls I enjoyed and for a cold Sapporo. read more

My son rated this place 1000/10 as the shrimp tempura appetizer was all shrimp and not 2 or 3 pieces of shrimp witha bunch of tempura veggies l like other places. The sushi fish was super fresh. Loved the chicken kara age. The lunch special with tempura udon was delicious and the spicy salmon roll has chunks of salmon, not pulverized salmon like normal. I liked their lunch specials. They don't have salmon or tuna rolls on the menu (there's avocado), but you can ask for it if you want it that way. The owner was humble and attentive. The kids were amazed by the hand towel experience that started off the meal (where you drop a tablet looking things into water and it turns into a hand towel with a lovely lemon scent). Overall, a solid choice for Japanese food in SE DC in terms of value and quality. read more

Prices are very reasonable, the neighbourhood is great, and the venue looks nice. However, I'm just not a fan. I think this is the first restaurant that I have ever been to where you have to order and pay (with tip) online at the table. The server did not clearly explain that so we waited much longer than we had to. What would happen if people were unable to use the online system for whatever reason? Because the servers did not take our order directly there was constant confusion on which plates went where, even though the online orders had names for individual people at the table. The fish did not taste as fresh as could be but that may be because we went on a Monday night when the stock might not have turned over. Another weird thing was that I had a sea bass sashimi order that was supposed to be 3 pieces (vs the 2 piece nigiri) and instead had two pieces that were cut the same size as the fish on the nigiris. Don't know if the kitchen had a braino or just took the slices off some nigiri. I'm never going to another restaurant where I have to order online at the table. The online system glitched a couple of times in ordering because there were sell-outs of items (their house sake!) in real time. The system was not intuitive in redoing your order after being notified of the inventory sellout. I couldn't figure out how to do it without hitting the back button of my browser so I was worried about being charged twice. read more

I have only ordered carry out from here before and I think it was okay. I liked all of the rolls that I got. A friend and I ordered 4 and shared and shared a dessert. Inside it cute and decorated upscale. The rolls cost a couple of dollars above their competitors, which would be Torai down the street. I think the sushi is average and can't really say anything bad about it but my preference is Torai. The hostess was also the server and I will say it was a long time between her seating us and getting our order taken. We wondered if maybe we had to go to a kiosk but then she came back and was pretty attentive after that. read more

For our wedding anniversary we planned to do a small sushi restaurant hop. We made our way back to Sushi Hachi where the sushi is fresh. The ambiance is always so warm and inviting. Jazz was softly played in the background. Our waitress was welcoming and took our order right away. She was attentive and friendly. We ordered the shrimp tempura, edamame, a cream cheese and cucumber roll, a spicy tuna roll, and the Alaska roll. Everything was delicious but the stand out dish was the shrimp tempura! It was light, crispy, and hot. Definitely our favorite. Sushi Hachi is a wonderful place to grab dinner by yourself or with that someone special. read more

We ordered a salmon and avocado sushi roll, tempura udon noodles, the Hachi roll, and the premium beef served on a hotstone. All of the dishes were excellent, with subtle flavors of salt and fragrance behind the fresh ingredients. My favorite was the salmon and avocado sushi roll! The service was extremely fast and polite- I appreciated that they were on top of our waters! Lastly, the lighting and music was perfect.
