Part of the Chef sushi platter
    Luice T.

I appreciated that we could walk in on a Monday night without reservations and not feel underdressed. (We had been walking around DC all day) My husband and I each got the chef sushi platter, I thought it was plenty of food, but my husband also ordered an extra salmon roll afterwards. Everything that came in the sushi platter was delicious, though I thought the ceviche was a little too sweet. However, the sushi roll that we got at the end had too much rice (The ratio was off) and was kind of a disappointing way to end the night.

Sushi Hachi is a really cozy restaurant nestled in the historic Eastern Market neighborhood. We were able to find parking right in front of the restaurant on a Thursday evening. We were seated quickly at the bar. There weren't too many people so they had plenty of seating. I opted for their Chef's sushi platter. For $30 I felt like you got a lot for what you paid for. Also their regular sushi rolls are super affordable too. Love that! - Edamame was fine nothing special - miso soup was also fine, kind of salty - snapper miso ceviche, loved how colorful it was and the chips that came with it. I do wish it had a little bit of a kick to it. It was a bit too sweet for my liking. - 5 piece nigiri. Tasty. My favorite was the salmon followed by the tuna - Yellowtail cilantro roll. My favorite of the night however it wasn't anything that I would go out of my way for I loved the plates and the small ceramic glasses that they give you with your hot sake. And our waitress was friendly and helpful. Also note that Sushi Hachi was voted one of the best sushi restaurants in DC. Not sure what year this was but congratulations. Thank you!

Soooo good! I'm in DC often for work and I'm always in the lookout for a good spot for lunch or dinner. This restaurant is in the Capitol Hill area and near Navy Yard where I stayed. The restaurant was not busy on a Monday night. The staff was friendly and helpful. They got me and my dinner date sat quickly and got our orders out quickly too. I ordered a couple sushi rolls and edamame. Also ordered the crème brûlée for dessert. If you're looking for delicious, well made sushi for dinner in a modern place!!

This place is such a gem in Capitol Hill! They offer incredible sushi rolls for just $8, along with great specials and platters that are perfect for sharing or sampling a bit of everything. There are also some standout specialty rolls--my favorite was the Capitol Roll. I could've eaten 15 of them--they were that good! The atmosphere strikes a nice balance: it's casual, but with a slightly elevated feel--somewhere between a laid-back sushi spot and a more upscale restaurant. Definitely a go-to for quality sushi at a great price.

I appreciated Sushi Hachi for seating me (with no reservation) and serving me quickly. I visited for the first time yesterday night before attending a show at the Miracle Theater and was in a bit of a rush, but was still able to enjoy my meal because of how quick and efficient the service was. The food was delicious. I ordered the Chef's Special which, as a nigiri lover, allowed me to try a number of different menu items I wanted without having to order so much food. The Yellowtail Cilantro roll was my favorite. The Snapper Miso ceviche was a bit on the sweet side for me with the yuzu, but the presentation made up for it.

Chef's platter. Reminds me of a deconstructed poké bowl.

Clean, enjoyable food. Terrific ambience and attentive service. Colleague and I stopped through here yesterday. Had it bookmarked for a while based on Yelp reviews. The interiors are beautiful. Service was friendly although it started a bit - odd. They redeemed themselves nicely. I had a CHEF'S PLATTER that showed up looking more like a poké bowl - arranged on a plate. Nicer selection of seafood. There was a piece of fried eel and a piece of smoked octopus along with the other sushi. Nice touch. My colleague got a couple of sushi rolls. The drinks were nice, although the menu is limited on the drink side. They only have about five options. We had miso soup, and edamame (nicely salted) and I had a wonderful SNAPPER CEVICHE. I thought that sounded novel and it definitely tasted as good as I expected it would. Probably my favorite on the table. We also had: +Tasting Platter--EDAMAME, Today's Miso Soup, Veggie (sliced zucchini ) Tempura, Chirashi Bowl (Today's Best Sashimi 10 Pieces Over A Bed Of Sushi Rice), + Shrimp Tempura (needed seasoning) Drink: Summer 夏 Brugal Anejo rum / lime juice/ blueberry/ mints/ club soda ^^ I had two of these they were so good. I like this place and will come back.

Came here for lunch and had a great experience! We came during the off hour time so it was pretty empty. We got seated very quickly and the sushi was served quickly as well. Staff were friendly and very attentive and the ambiance is nice. It's like a typical sushi place. Great to come for a date or with friends. In terms of food, we ordered their salmon avocado roll, Alaska roll, and their salmon and yellow tail nigiri. All the fish was very fresh and super tasty. We even ordered an extra roll because the first few rolls were so good. To top it off, the food was priced really well so you'll definitely get the best bang for your buck. Would highly recommend!

I had a wonderful Mother's Day with my adult son, at Sushi Hachi. It was quiet, which is what I enjoy, while eating sushi, and thinking of Japanese culture. The sushi has always been fresh, beautifully presented, the dishes are so graceful, there were fresh tulips on each table, a perfect lunch with my most favorite first born. And, for the most part of it, we had the restaurant all to ourselves, on Mother's Day, who can ask for more? We had lunch at around 3:30, so it was not quite dinner time and a bit past lunch, for those of you who are thinking Oko, why was it empty on such a busy Sunday? I highly recommend this restaurant. Wonderful experience each time we went. Thank You!

It's kinda a quiet place but the food is very good, expensive tasting fish and hot steak plate is a conversation starter

One of the best sushi spots around! You have a wet towel at each place setting. The rolls are priced well and are delicious. Try one of the drink specials!

Started with the Red Snapper ceviche. It was so good that I reverted to a fork to clear the bowl. I accompanied the meal with the house hot sake that paired well with the fish. It was a nice upgrade to my usual draft beer selection. I had two rolls and both were excellent. The spicy tuna avocado roll was superb and the yellowtail scallion roll was fresh and very tasty. I added a third roll, called the Alaska. It was a great combination and was the perfect way to end a celebratory evening. The service is always the star of the night at Sushi Hachi! My server was attentive and quick while looking calm and zen throughout. The managers/owners each stopped by the table and we talked about the neighborhood and I felt a connection to my Capitol Hill community. All-around it was an outstanding evening. Will return as often as I can!

I went for the buffet brunch at Dear Sushi. I'm not a hugh sushi eater but I loved the cooked stuff. I'm not super adventurous on the raw lol. The buffet is $65 and a 20% gratuity is added. The price was ok with me. There were plenty of food options for me to chose from and the service was good. We sat the bar, Jose and Molly were awesome and mixed up some delicious drinks. The food was delicious. Highlights for me were the fried chicken ( not sure of the correct name), milk bread (had to limit myself, I love bread lol), dumplings ( could have takien the whole tray lol), grilled salmon, and the tempura cauliflower. Another standout was the donuts from the dessert section. These donuts were so lite and airy. Almost guilt free when you bit into them. I would definitely return for brunch or to try out one of the other spots.

I really liked the concept of one "old school" and one "new school" style of the same fish. But, the sushi just didn't live up to the hype. First, the pieces of fish were way too big. The fish was far larger than the rice and very difficult to eat. More like 2-3 bites. Also, some fish had skin on - which I know is a chef's choice - but I found it very unappetizing. Had to choke those down. And the "new school" hand-roll had imitation crab in it. So odd and doesn't feel upscale. We enjoyed the frozen strawberry for dessert. They're super cute and tasty. Just wish we had a better experience with the sushi.

We ordered the Spicy Miso with the spice bomb and egg, along with the veggie ramen with spice bomb. The Spicy Miso was the clear winner--easily one of the most flavorful ramen bowls I've had, with just the right kick and incredible depth. The veggie ramen was also excellent and a great option for vegetarians. We also tried the gyoza, spring rolls, and Sapporo beer. For dessert, we ordered the black sesame ice cream, but the ramen portions were so generous that we were too full to finish it! Service was quick, attentive, and efficient. The atmosphere is exactly what you'd want from a Japanese ramen spot--casual, lively, and unassuming. The food felt authentic and the flavors really stood out. They also have an izakaya upstairs, which we unfortunately didn't get a chance to try. Definitely saving that for the next visit!

Let me start by saying I recently visited Daikaya on Monday, August 3, 2026, and unfortunately the…read moreservice that day was disappointing. I gave that particular visit 1 out of 5 stars. However, I also want to mention that Daikaya is one of my family's favorite ramen spots, so we were genuinely surprised by the experience because it has always been much better in the past. When we arrived, we were told that our entire party had to be present before we could be seated, which we understood. We also know that seating is first come, first served. In the past, we've been able to sit in a booth with two people, but this time we were informed that booths were reserved for parties of three or more. It was a little frustrating because the restaurant was slow at the time, and my wife politely explained that we would likely be finished before the dinner rush. Even so, we respected the policy and waited until a seat became available. I do want to give Terry a shoutout because he was very kind and professional. I explained that I couldn't sit at the bar due to my foot, and he was understanding. However, when he relayed that information to another employee, I immediately noticed a change in the other gentleman's body language and attitude. He seemed irritated about having to seat us. Once we were seated, the interaction only became more uncomfortable. He slammed our cups onto the table, and when I asked for a straw, he didn't hand it to me--he simply placed it down without saying much. There were several other small interactions throughout our meal that made us feel unwelcome. It reached the point where we decided we'd rather leave, so we flagged Terry down, asked for to-go containers, and requested the check. During our visit, I also noticed a party of four seat themselves and grab their own menus while both servers had their backs turned at the bar. When the same gentleman approached them, his demeanor was completely different. He was pleasant, took their order right away, and their food came out promptly. Watching that interaction made our experience feel even more disappointing. The food, thankfully, was excellent as always. That's one thing Daikaya continues to get right. I also noticed that none of the staff members we're used to seeing--who have always been warm, welcoming, and respectful--were working that day. Overall, this visit was a rare disappointment because the customer service simply wasn't up to the standard we've experienced over the years. While this particular experience deserves a low rating, I also want to acknowledge that every previous visit has been excellent. I'm hoping this was just an off day because Daikaya has consistently been one of our favorite places for ramen.
