I visited this place on 12/13/19 to pick up lunch to-go. Food and First Impressions Convenient (to me) K Street NW location, not too far from Farragut North and Farragut West, and close to me. I got the Combo Platter and chose a combination the Fresh Salmon Rolls (6), Tuna & Avocado Rolls (6 Pieces), and miso Soup (photos below). The Combo (according to the Ritual app anyway) comes with a side of steamed rice. The cost was $10. The sushi was fine, sized well. I thought this was a good price for a combo that included two sushi rolls; I thought they might come out smaller but they were normal. The miso soup was a tasty plain but plain broth. It had approximately 2 small, small pieces of tofu in it. I looked up miso soup photos online to compare, and others had veggies and such. Oh well. The tuna roll wasn't too fishy. Yay. The soy sauce tasted special, like they made their own...just somehow different from the usual packet soy sauce. It was strong, so I used it sparingly. Pick-up Experience As I am doing often these days, I used the Ritual app to schedule pickup, and it was pretty fast, though it didn't have my side of steamed rice. I wasn't in a rush. I let them know and they added it soon after, so no worries in this case. Ambiance The restaurant is inside a larger office building on the upper level (photos below), and it is on the end of a long-ish corridor. Once you enter the building, you take the escalator to get to the level Sushi Express is on. The seating is mostly on the outside of the restaurant. The space itself nice initimate-ish space. There were people seated in the corridor seating area munching. My Conclusion I would come back if I wanted a sushi lunch, or to try another item on the menu. If I really wanted it, I might get the miso broth soup again--but I'd try other places' miso soups first to see if I get a more filling soup. Convenient location for the work day. read more

Finally walked 0.48 miles to eat at this place from work and don't know if I would say it was worth it for what I got. For 6 dollars, I bought a rainbow roll while my friend had teriyaki for 5 dollars. Personally, the fish was not bad, but there wasn't anything special about the sushi. I rather have got a combo with teriyaki as the sushi was just not filling! Huge kudos to the "free" miso or soup with your meal. For 9 dollars, you can order a combo of sushi and other meals (see my picture for pricing) but I am Still not convinced that this is any deal what so ever! I would def want to try out their hot meals as they did give a good amount of my chicken to my friend, but they do need to improve on their flavoring. This place is a great find! It was kind of confusing to find it- as it's inside an office building up the escalator but once you do woo hoo! I sampled the vegetarian rolls- I think there were 3? They were all tasty and fresh. The rice was warm and tender and perfectly cooked. After thinking I'd tried all of the drool and wallet-worthy hole in the walls in this part of town a friend took me here. Looks like I missed one! This place is crazy cheap and the food ain't bad either. I had the rainbow rolls which came with a salad and the shrimp dumplings which came with a hunk of steamed rice and a miso broth soup. In total this massive amount of food only set me back $11. Probably one of the best deals for a weekday lunch downtown. The rainbow rolls were made fresh to order although I wouldn't try the sushi if you're a big germaphobe since this place has seen better days. The shrimp dumplings were fried and really were more like shrimp shumai than dumplings. They tasted great especially for only $4 for a big portion. The side salad wasn't anything special but it's nice they tack it on. Not sure why someone said they don't take credit cards but they do. I ordered Chirashi. It looks OK. The fish and rice is inbalance. Too few fish compared to rice. After my first bite, my impression is, What! They serve Chirashi with bland hot rice in stead of flavourful cold sushi rice. Who does that? That is not even the worst part. The hot rice cooked unevenly. Some part are too wet and therefore mushy. Some part are too dry. If a Sushi restaurant can not even cook the rice right....Well, you draw your own conclusion. The Miso soup is also very diluted. By far their most popular thing is the sushi set where you can pick two rolls, tempura, or sashimi options and add soup or salad for $11 after tax. Their rolls are decent - I usually get the cali, the eel and cucumber or the futomaki. A la carte rolls are 4-5$. Now don't come here if you're expecting perfectly cooked rice (sometimes a little overcooked) or a precise tight wrap, but everything is freshly made because they do so much lunchtime business. What puts it over to four stars is that the sushi maker and the person working the cashier are always really nice. They have a small selection of Japanese snacks and drinks, and they have freshly made onigiri for $2! The value you get from this place is crazy. My chicken teriyaki meal which came with a side salad was only $5.50 and I added a small miso soup for only a dollar. And the portions aren't small at all. As I said, crazy value. The food itself is pretty good, I wouldn't say great but surely a fine lunch option. The miso soup was yummy and the salad was fairly standard. I enjoyed the chicken teriyaki but it clearly felt like a cheaper version of it (as I expected given the price). The chicken didn't have that teriyaki taste to it. The pickled relish on top of the noodles was great, but I really wanted some broccoli and maybe some carrot to give the dish more color and texture. The California rolls took three minutes to make, which I appreciated. However, the crab meat doesn't look fresh and looks instead like it's been sitting out for a while. The only redeeming quality about the California roll was that the rice was perfectly cooked. The sashimi was frozen when I got it. I chewed through stiff fish and ice particles in both the tuna and white fish. I waited quite a bit of time to try the sashimi and it was still things frozen. Absolute charming, cash only, hole in the wall. I've been to Japan and this restaurant recaptured all the feels of a typical "quick eats" sushi joint in Tokyo. Temper your expectations, this is not "fancy" highbrow Americanized sushi. You won't find many crazy rolls here. Instead you'll find much more traditional Japanese lunch offerings sashimi, onigiri, bento boxes. Fish is fresh savory and served at a proper temperature (only slightly cooler than room temperature) rather than the overly chilled, tasteless American way. Rice is likewise perfected in both texture and temperature. Very spartan establishment. No tables inside, just a small counter with stools. This place is to die for. I'm only reviewing it since I'm leaving my job right across the street and no longer have to keep this gem to myself since it's extremely well-hidden in the second floor of an office building. I wish I knew the sushi maker guy's name, but he has to be a member of Mensa. I've never seen someone with such a good memory-- not only does he usually know what the regulars want when they order, but he can remember a stack of 20 orders deep with incredible precision. Beyond that, it's really the prices (paid cash only) that really keep those of us lucky enough to know about this place coming back. The $9 combo platter is a great deal-- one basic roll and one order of varying teryaki or tempura are two of my favorites served that way. Otherwise, I usually go for the $5.50 Rainbow Roll special-- the special being that it comes with miso soup or salad. That roll can go for $12 at some specialty restaurants for the same size and quality, so it really is a true bargain. Some recent reviewers complained about the wait, so I want to address that as well. Typically, you've got the man on sushi, the man in the kitchen, and Hungoro on the counter. Those 3 really had it going on. Since Hungoro has been out on maternity leave, though, the wait has gotten really, really bad. However, I'm convinced this is only temporary and once she's back the Express will come back to Sushi Express. I am tearing up knowing that my at-least-weekly trists over to Sushi Express are soon to come to an end. Sushi Express offers up some very good sushi. I Worked on the same block as this place for about 7 years and would eat here at least once every other week. I have tried every single thing on the menu and have enjoyed it all. My favorite is the DC Roll (tuna, shrimp, avocado, fish roe). They offer some very good combination platters that cover most of the menu items. The items from the kitchen are also good, such as the tempura, teriyaki, or yakisoba. The chef is Japanese and makes everything the way it should be made. He is also a very nice guy and as the other reviewers have posted, his memory is impeccable. There can be a line of people, it can be weeks since your last visit and he will give you a knowing nod when you get close to the counter and then call out your usual order. They also carry some Japanese drinks and snacks. For seating, there is a small counter that seats a few people or you can go find one of the few tables out in the common area in the office building.
