Epic? That's a pretty tall claim, but let's find out. My stomach is on eastern time, so I got here at 4:40 on a Friday. No wait. The girl at the counter could tell I was new here and pleasantly allowed me to take my time and walk through the options. Junior Epic Burger with bacon and fried egg, fries and soda. I have her a hard time about having Pepsi products, not Coke, but she pleasantly ribbed me back and we agreed that I wasn't there for soda anyway. Fries were Fresh cut, and fresh cooked. If you've been to a Penn Station- same thing. Good compliment to the burger. Side salad is also an option. The burger was good- don't know that I'd say "epic" but good. If I had it to do again, I'd get the regular size burger and/or Epic sauce to get the real experience. Shame on me... I'll do better next time. That said, bacon and egg made for a good taste, but not unlike a Steak n Shake. The bun was a step above other burgers. I had wheat, and it was soft and moist like white, but I was really happy with it. That was a lot closer to epic. There is also the feel good factor from their sustainability efforts. White Castle and Burger King cook their vegetarian/vegan burgers on a separate grill, and they are MUCH less expensive than this place.. I had to throw it out after spitting out the one bite i took. I had passed this place a few times since I live in the area, and had consistently giggled at the name. "Epic" is just one of those adjectives that resonates with nerds. Saturday, while on the prowl for some eats, my roommate and I checked in here at my request. The place is big and spacious, and turned out to be very green. Luckily, they weren't off the grid, and were able to enjoy Olympic trampolining on their HDTVs. I got a burger sans egg on a wheat bun with blue cheese. It was real thick and juicy, which describes a lot of my favorite things. My roomie got the chicken sandwich, which was also good. The fries are decent, though I really was surprised by the organic ketchup...I could've sworn it was tangier and tastier than normal ketchup. Hubby and I thoroughly enjoyed Epic. We had to wait a little longer than we expected for our food, but the fod was pretty good. I got a regular burger on a whole wheat bun, with epic sauce and fries the first time I came. The second time, I got the same burger and a vanilla shake. I don't get to downtown Chicago that often, but every once in awhile in the evening or on a Saturday I may go to check things out or perhaps head to the library in search of some good reads. Walked in and the place seemed empty except for a couple of occupied tables...thought fine....its evening so most have gone home from work or the students (this is street level of a dorm shared by the universities in the area) have already eaten. So I went to the ordering area and decided on a classic burger with bacon and Hvarti cheese and most of the fixings with the combo....when I got the total I thought it was bit much (but then found out later that they did charge for the cheese and the bacon) but thought the burger would be something different. Well it was OK....I wasn't overly impressed (although the burger itself tasted good)...as the burger was a tad greasy and the fries (similar to 5 Guys with the skin on the potatoes) could have been a bit warmer. The service wasn't bad and I liked the fact you could get a whole wheat bun besides the white bread bun. I frequent Epic quite often, but this was my first time placing a web order. The order is placed and paid for, so I head over to the restaurant. I arrive and told the clerk at the front counter my name and I had an order for pickup. It was a Beyond Burger. The clerk told me that he had not put my order in yet. Really? I thought he was joking. I expected my order to at least still be on the griddle, even if it was not ready when I arrived, not sitting in the queue. This makes no sense......I thought the objective of offering online ordering is to give the customer a short wait time and skip the line. So, I asked for a refund. He tells me that I will have to receive the refund from ChowNow, the web vendor Epic uses for online orders. Great.. I ask for the manager, who happened to be nearby. I told her that I placed an online order and it was still in the queue. She shrugs her shoulders and tells me "we're busy". What an absurd thing for a manager to say to a customer. If she says that she did not say that to me, she is lying. I leave and go back to my office.. I contact ChowNow for my refund. The rep at ChowNow tells me that they need to confirm the details with Epic. Okay, no problem. I understand needing to make sure I'm not scamming for a $8 dollar burger. Four days later and I have yet to be refunded. So, I contact ChowNow again and I'm told the manager at Epic Burger has not approved the refund. Seriously?? The burger was not cooking when I arrived at the restaurant, so what is the issue with refunding my money??? This looks and feels like theft to me. Epic can choose to not refund me my money. I will never patronize them again and will tell my colleagues and whomever I hear mention Epic Burger how they took my money for an online order I did not receive and refused to return my money. So I ate my first Epic Burger. I got the Double Burger with Aged Cheddar, Blue Cheese, Fried egg and all the free trimmings minus bacon (I don't eat pork) I love the burger. On a scale from 1 to 10..1 being McDonald's and 10 being the Holy Grail which is Fatburger, Epic is a strong 9. The only thing that keeps it from a 10, is the price in comparison to Fatburger (you get a bigger burger for a cheaper price at Fatburger...they need it back in Chicago...Kanye West goofed that up with his franchises that he NEVER put any effort into to promote) The fries were good natural cut with the skins. However, they only have 1 size and it's not a good value for basically a small fry at large fry price. Epic? Burger.... I am not sure if I would say that it was epic persay, but it was a good quality burger. I ordered a junior Epic with a fried egg, bacon, cheddar cheese, grilled onions, epic sauce on a wheat bun. I also ordered a South Beach smoothie (Strawberry, OJ and banana). They really push natural and health driven products. Cage free eggs, Nitrate free bacon and Wisconsin cheese. The patty itself was cooked a little past medium well so it had a good consistency. The bacon was absolutely gorgeous. Crisp, thick, savory. Fried egg is hard to mess up. Overall this was a good quality burger. The fries are natural cut and nothing special to rave about, but they are not bad either. I give them a 6.5 out of 10. I feel if they had a little more crunch to them, they would be a notch higher. If you like soft fries (shame on you!) then they are right up your alley. One gripe I have with the burger is that with the Epic sauce, the bun tends to fall apart by the time you finish. Maybe it was because I had a wheat bun or maybe not, but buns should stay intact till the end. The Smoothie was good and refreshing. Not too sugary, not to heavy. I also had a bite of the chicken breast. The sandwich tasted like, well... chicken. Can't complain! What's an added bonus is the service of them bringing you your meal out to your tables, so you can conveniently check in and see that you've checked in on their tweetdeck monitor. They have a variety of soda beverages they offer and the staff were attentive in cleaning tables or getting you items that you needed to make the experience more enjoyable. They have different toppings you can add to your burger. I liked the fresh cut fries the sweet potato ones my friend got tasted funny. I feel obligated to add that it was a weekend evening and I was accosted outside of the restaurant but an aggressive panhandler, this is no fault of the business. But the sweet potato fries left more to be desired. They weren't quite right... a few were overcooked and others were undercooked. So sad.
