The Bad Apple has truly turned bad. This used to be my go-to burger spot and overnight their food quality seemed to go down. The unfortunate thing is that when you have expensive food, like The Bad Apple does, the expectation of consistently good food is higher and they haven't been able to deliver. The last few times I've had a burger from here I've been left underwhelmed. My go-to burger is the Da Bears Burger which runs $18 when you order from GrubHub. The last two times I've had the burger (once at the restaurant and once at home) the smoked brisket has been dry. On my last occasion the bottom half of the bun was burnt. It was barely edible without drowning it in sauce. I've reached the point that the price outweighs the food quality. We were out bar hopping for my daughter's birthday and stopped at The Bad Apple for an early dinner. We were surprised by this spot! They've got lots of beers on taps and by the can. Their menu is a good size with tons of options. We started with the cheese curds, and as someone who lived in Minnesota, these were a proper curd! Lightly breaded and perfectly fried with chewy cheese on the inside. For my main, I got the Elvis burger which had peanut butter, pepper jelly and fried plantains. I didn't love the plantains on it, but those were easy to remove. I love peanut butter on a burger and this was excellent. The beef patty itself was substantial and cooked just as I ordered it. It wasn't busy but we were there after 9pm. We waited an hour for a table which is expected since it's a new place. The drink menu was really fun and had a lot of different drink options. We had a bacon old fashioned and a bloody mary. The food was sooooo much. I'd go here if you love giant portion sizes. For me personally, it was all a bit too greasy and too much food. My girlfriend and I came through on Memorial Day and had lunch together. We both ordered the Bad Apple burgers and an order of cheese curds. The cheese curds were good--but the burgers were amazing. What's really going to bring me back here is the house-made ketchup. That stuff is next level. Service was decent--not particularly memorable, but they were there when we needed them, and that's really all you can ask for. Took my friend for her birthday--the cocktails were mediocre (was there any liquor even in them?), the food was cold and missing ingredients, it was like everything had been prepared beforehand and then slapped together (my burger was not edible, ugh). Then all the waitstaff loudly dumped their dishes in a nearby tub geez think of your customers wanting a pleasant night out without all the clamoring. The bartender told us that the owner does it himself because "rising costs and labor costs". Came to Chicago with my wife for a Yelp event. Since we were here, we decided to try some local breweries and restaurants. All the walking made us hungry, so we decided to eat at The Bad Apple. She's been here before, but this was my first time. A lot of the restaurants were busy. When we walked in, there were only a handful of people here. It was extremely quiet. Even the employees were trying to figure out how to occupy their time. We waited 30 minutes for our food. There was nobody else being served food. I had their regular burger. It wasn't greasy (which was good). The fries were decent and crispy. Where they fell short was their service. It got to the point that I was eager to leave. The food was decent. We were staying two blocks from the Bad Apple this time in Chicago, and it seemed like it might be a toned-down, more family-friendly version of Kuma's, a place we've somehow never checked out despite many visits to the city: "gourmet" burgers, heavy rock and roll, etc., but with the volume turned down a bit. My developmentally-disabled brother-in-law joined us on this trip, and for some mysterious reason we acceded to his request to dine indoors on a beautiful 72-degree evening. (This was a couple of months back.) Inside, the decor is mostly a deep red with a strong, cartoonish dragon motif. And for early evening on a Monday, the music was pretty loud, although not overwhelmingly so--mostly guitar-heavy indie and "alternative" rock, much of which I recognized and most of which I liked. (Yeah, I'm old.) The titles of the burgers here don't really reveal much about what's on them---you'll need to peruse the menu closely if you're a first-timer--but the "Figs Is In" was a little more self-explanatory than the rest. It came with a fig & bacon relish, goat cheese, and smoked onion, a combination that clicked nicely and was less messy than I had feared. The burger itself had good flavor, although it leaned more toward medium-well than the medium I ordered. Handcut fries were excellent. Relatively extensive draft beer list with plenty of variety. We requested a small to-go box and our server hadn't come by for several minutes. So we ended up asking another server who then came by at the exact same time as our original server. I heard at least two other tables talking about Kuma's and comparing them. It's similar in fact they serve mostly burgers and fries. Very different . I try to go in without comparison. The fries were overly salty. I'd recommend asking for light salt or no salt at all. The "East Meats West" brisket sandwich was just average. Discovered this place by accident. It was one of those rare Friday nights at home and I was craving a burger. I decided to check this place out. Reviewed the menu and settled on the Jake and Elwood. Everything about it appealed to me: malt vinegar onion jam with buckboard bacon and arugula. The burger itself comes with cambazola triple cream bleu cheese, but I substituted goat cheese instead. That was a winner for me. The Queen got the Just Beyond the Thunderdome (braised short rib, white cheddar, onion rings, horseradish sauce, on a pretzel bun). That looked amazing and I want to try that as well. The fries were lukewarm by the time they showed up but were okay once I nuked them for a bit. I like that they allow you to make substitutions as the J&E snatched my soul with the goat cheese. And that malt vinegar onion jam with buckboard bacon was amazing...it was loaded with bacon, tender and flavorful. The Queen got a salad instead of fries and it looked great. It was a pear/apple one with nuts and the presentation for take out was pretty good. I may do that instead of fries next time. The list of burgers is tantalizing and I do want to try more of them. The food here is always a hit. The service; attentive and friendly. The vibe is fun. During the summer season you can get a table outside and inside is pretty spacious. The burgers here are insane. My boyfriend is a vegetarian and he always orders the Nada Burger (see pic). It's a monster. I love their wings here. The garlic honey is chef's kiss!! Those are my go to... ALWAYS.
