The food is pretty pricey for what you get and service here was absolutely horrible. We came in and the place was barely packed. It took us almost 20 minutes to get our food. I think everybody who ordered their food after us got their food way before we did. We had to go up and ask us where our food was and it was sitting on the countertop by the grill. I live right down the block from here, so it should be an easy choice for a burger and shake. To be honest, I've never had bad food here. The service from the managers is never very great though. They have peak times and it just is easier for them to be very dismissive of customers to satisfy order completion. I suggest better time management and utilization of staff. They were also out of milkshakes today, as I was told by the manager. Come to find out they just decided to not make any because of the rush. I was able to pull aside a food runner and ask. It would've been preferred to just be transparent with me rather than create a lie and lose revenue for your company. This place has amongst the best burgers in town. The whole wheat bun really adds a different flavor. My favorite is their double epic burger with all free toppings including cheddar cheese. My initial epic visit here was not followed up quite the way I expected. Hurrying in on a very short lunch break I was looking forward to satisfying my hunger with a big, delicious, tasty, sloppy burger. What I got was a sloppy burger, and re-hydration. I appreciate having fresh vegetable toppings over my meat, but the amount of water that sopped out of this burger was ridiculous. I thought that maybe I got an overly juicy combination of lettuce and tomato served between about six ounces of H20. Maybe it was just a fluke. It was after all coming after a particularly rainy time in the summer and maybe, just maybe, the veg on my burger had absorbed all of that water- making it a freak occurrence. Then after heading back to the office, the first two people who asked where I ate for lunch replied (separately) "Oh- I don't like the burgers there. They are just too messy. Too... wet..." Besides this moisture issue, I would also say the meat patty itself was quite bland. This could have been due to the seasoning being washed away in the shower that was the vegetables, but still- that needs to be corrected. Another suggestion- if you are going to continue to serve such wet food between a bun, you might want to serve it on toast in order to try to hold up to all that water. I guess 20 seconds is a long time to peruse the menu and place an order. Petulant. The deal is that you place your order, fill your own fountain drink and then take your number to your table and wait for it to be squired to you. Well, I waited. Then, I waited some more. It took upwards of 10 minutes to get my order. It's almost like going to the drive through at Steak 'N Shake, which is notoriously slow. In the interim, I took in the scene walking by on State. Scary. Just plain scary. I must be getting old. So my food finally arrives: a burger and fries with the accompanying fountain drink I drew myself and was already half finished with. First impression? Far from epic. The burger was dry, crispy (which isn't bad) and downright tasteless. The onions didn't even add any taste. It tasted like bun and air. I would love to give you a review of their Horseradish Havarti cheese, but the assembly engineer in charge of my burger decided to omit that from my order. I think there was a fried egg on my burger as well, but I can't be sure; although I saw it atop the patty, I couldn't taste it no matter how hard I tried. So, wth am I giving them 3 stars for? The place is clean, bright and inviting. You get your food fairly quick and hot. That's why. Does that sound epic to you? Not too many places offer a soy option on their menu. The cashiers are okay, not overly friendly but just enough to make you feel welcomed. I'm not one that craves a burger normally, but ever since we came home from Epic I've been thinking about that burger, and trying to figure out if I can make it there and back in an hour during my lunch break! Girl at the counter, very nice and redid the entire order to give us combos since we didn't know about them. They were out of wheat buns but that's okay! No big deal, but they were apologetic. So so nice for a burger joint. Communal tables I'm not a fan of but we lived. The burger came out piping hot and wonderful. Just flatten it with your hands and go to town! Fresh lettuce, grilled onions (and LOTS of them!), yummy Epic sauce! It was fantastic. And the fries....I just kept eating and eating their great seasoned fries even though I was uncomfortably full already! The bathroom though are horrendous! Not in the dirty way, but the it's too freaking small way! You walk, literally, into the 2 stalls when you open the door. Then while washing your hands the person trying to come in can't get by b/c you're in the way! Make it a one-seater if it needs to be that tiny b/c that was a big ridiculous! The burger is nothing extraordinary but it feeds you which is the most important thing. I would never go out of my way to go here though, if I'm in the area I'll consider stopping by. Keep in mind, it's 6+ for only a burger. $10+ for a meal. Parking is fairly easy, their is meter parking for $4 an hour just south of Harrison street. They have a very large seating area with outdoor seating. the restrooms are fairly clean and you have to get a key from the cashier for it. They offer free wifi, but it's never worked for any of us (but not a big deal, here for your info). What can really kill your experience is the cashier that serviced us. There was no greeting, no smiling, no nothing. I felt like I was at the DMV. It was just give me your order and keep moving along. And she worked super slow, there were about 7-8 customers behind us and she was taking her sweet time punching in the order. I'm not kidding, the guy before us ordered one burger meal but the time to place his order took 3 minutes... Eventually another cashier came and opened up another register. The waiters were awesome though. They bring the food to your table. So the depressed cashier punched in our order wrong and my sister didn't get her fries. And they seem environmentally and morally conscious with biodegradable cups made from corn, organic ketchup (who knew Heniz had organic ketchup?!), and free range meat. The fries were even worse - they were soggy, had some weird seasoning that didn't agree with the ketchup. I think they could have been okay if there was something other than ketchup to dip them in. And am I the only one who finds the humor in the fact that they're trying to be more socially and environmentally conscious, and yet they have Pepsi fountain drinks full of HFCS? This pitch should work well in its South Loop location near the Harold Washington Library and in range of numerous downtown college students. The interior has a bright and cheery look, sort of like an idealized college cafeteria with plastic furniture and TV's giving out bits of information while you eat. After you place your order, grab a table - and don't forget your number on a stick so that one of the young servers will bring your food to your table. The $10 deal (including tax) seems to be the way to go. You get the all-natural Epic Burger with all the fixin's (grilled onions yum), a big sack of fries (cooked in trans fat free oil!) and a fountain drink. The burger is quite a handful, and fortunately the whole wheat bun kept everything together. The juicy burger tastes sort of like what a Wendy's burger used to taste like, although the "Epic sauce" (sort of like a Thousand Island / Big Mac "special sauce") did not bowl me over. Each table had a bottle of Grey Poupon plus organic Heinz ketchup, how about that? The limited menu also features a turkey burger, chicken sandwich, portabella mushroom sandwich, smoothies and shakes. It's similar to Culver's where you place your order and sit down with a number. I was down with the minimalist décor and black & white movie on the tv. Once I picked up my burger, I was scared to put it down. It got messy and a little drippy but it didn't totally fall apart. It was good but I've definitely had better burgers in Chicago. I thought the best part of the meal was the hand-cut fries, followed by the chocolate shake (in a compostable cup). It was a good for a change, especially with the organic beef. As I walked into this place, I immediately grimaced. The only thing that I could think of was that this place was really orange! All of the chairs in this place were a bright orange color that really looked awful and in a way kind of made me uncomfortable before I even sat down. We went up to the counter right away as the place was not really busy at all. I was really under whelmed with the staff here. They were really not all that friendly almost to the point of making me feel uncomfortable. Everyone here seemed to just be going through the motions and not really giving a damn. I was immediately worried about the condition of my food when I received it. We found a table and seemed to wait quite a while for a couple of burgers especially since the place was not all that busy at all. They finally brought out the burgers and they packaged it to go even though were staying there to eat. At this point I was not expecting much from my meal. After consistently disappointing me since I walked through the door I tried the burger and fries and they nearly redeemed themselves!. This truly was an epic burger and fries. It was a very good size and tasted outstanding! All of the toppings were fresh and delicious. The fries were also a good portion size and also tasted outstanding! Perhaps it was the fact that I had been up for 9 hours and had not eaten a morsel yet, but I have to tell you - Epic Burger serves one hell of an all-natural beef burger, hand formed and cooked to order! I had a Jr Epic Burger, white bun, grilled onions, lettuce, pickles, fabulous horseradish Havarti cheese and that mystery Epic sauce. I want to know what that is exactly because it was heavenly! The fries were very good, too. Cooked in transfat free oil and seasoned with pure sea salt, these tatoes are cut and cooked without any processing steps in between. Mighty tasty! Epic also offers malts and shakes and my friend loved hers. The smoothes looked good, but hell, I was not about to ruin my meat/tato/grease/secret sauce inducing food orgasm with fruit, fat free yogurt, nuts and soy. Blasphemy! In a day and age where for some odd reason burger joints are proudly exclaiming, "oh, we only serve our burgers medium" (think The Counter), I love Epic for cooking their juicy, dripping burgers well done. I order my steaks med rare, but my burgers have to be at least med well - no ecoli for me, thanks - and when I told my guy I wanted it med well, he kindly told me "we only cook them well." Touche'! The Epic Burger is nothing short of amazing for a fast food chain burger. Perhaps whether you'll love Epic Burger comes down to whether you like Wendy's. (For my part, Wendy's is my favorite national burger chain.) Like Wendy's, Epic's patties are loosely packed and come with a distinct salty flavor. The cooked patties are then surrounded by the sweet, sweet love of an excellent bun. Epic is basically Wendy's turned to 11, and, in terms of regional, upper-scale chains, neither In N Out nor Shake Shack can come close. I don't go out of my way to eat organically because I'm cheap, but I thought I'd give Epic Burger a try since I was in the area and was craving a burger. I was right on it being expensive. My organic burger + organic fried egg + organic fries + diet Pepsi (combo) totaled close to $11. At least the organic Heinz ketchup was free. There's not much selection. As far as burgers, you can either get the regular (comes with lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, raw or grilled onions; fried egg, organic bacon, and choice of cheese are about $0.70 extra) or the BLT (which comes with the egg, bacon, and cheese already!) - both for $5.99. They have 1 chicken sandwich option, 1 turkey burger option, and 1 portabello mushroom sandwich option. That's about the entire menu. They also offer combo meals (burger/sandwich+ fries + drink) that start at $9. I was happy about the whole wheat bun option and was pleased with the smokiness of the meat which really tasted char-grilled. I've tried both versions of the red meat burger, and I highly suggest the BLT! But my friend said she didn't like the overpowering taste of the buttered buns. And the fries are also bland (I usually have to add salt), but they aren't greasy. I don't love it, but the BLT is pretty darn good. read more

And when everything is as organic and fresh as Epic's ingredients, there's nothing truly heavy about it. -Juicy "100% fresh chunk, all natural beef" (not taken out of the freezer and needing the cook to peel off a piece of wax paper off) -Bun that's delivered daily from local bakeries (so soft your fingers leave finger indents) -Local veggies (yep that lettuce, tomato and such don't travel through 8 states before making it here) -The ingredients are organically natural: Wisconsin cheese makers (gotta love our northern neighbors), pure sea salt (for those hand-cut fries), cage-free organic eggs (for me, a burger ain't a burger without a juicy egg on top), trans-fat free oil (it's a given now a days), and nitrate free bacon (what the heck is nitrate anyway?). Now it just seems like I rewrote the "Epic Rules" (except theirs is written better), however, this is for all those Epic newbies to read before their visit. So let's just agree that the burgers ain't solid but truly EPIC. I might as well go all out when stealing ideas and wording. I LOVED the tasteful freshness! No matter if you want a real burger, chicken burger, mushroom burger or turkey burger, you got it! All equally delicious and priced. The french fries were addicting being freshly cut, fried, warm and salted. My one complaint is that I wish I could have decided on how your burger is cooked. I mean you get every other option at the counter. Mine seemed a little too red for my liking. But for the quality, speed and location, you can't ask for much more! read more

Attempting to write an epic to an otherwise stressful, long week, I strolled over to Epic Burger with the office posse, my sights set on a juicy burger and on a mission to sample this renowned Epic sauce. File under: Epic disappointment. Okay, perhaps that's a bit of an exageration, but it was not the stellar experience I had been envisioning - you know, the heavens open, the celestial choir sings, and I munch on the most divine fast food burger available in the South Loop. I opted for the Epic Burger smothered in grilled onions and cheddar, along with the rest of the fixins' and some french fries. For a fast food burger, I was impressed. It was full of flavor, fresh and juicy. Perhaps a bit too juicy. My favorite green shirt will now have a permanent souveneir from our Epic Adventure - a multitude of grease splotches. While this is the signature of a great burger to many, it was a sore spot for me as I tried to hold together my slip n' slide patty and bun. No easy feat. The fries were tasty. I shared them with a friend and was all set to polish off the rest by myself when... Gag... What is this.... A HAIR?!?! Oh no, evidently it was "likely" a piece of burlap, as their potatoes come in burlap sacks. A nappy, reddish piece of "burlap." With a root. Curious, I've never encountered "burlap" that has a root before, nor one that bore such a close resemblance to one of the employee's shade of hair. Curious indeed.... When I brought this to their attention, they offered me a free brownie or cookie. While I appreciate the offer, I was already full and to be honest, the nappy "burlap" had all but ruined what appetite I had left. So instead I got a coupon for $2 off my next combo. Wow. Sorry for the entirely gross experiene you had, here's $2 off your next disgusting hair filled encounter. The owner/manager/authority figure seemed to think that this was just no big deal. Well chief, let's see if you can maintain that same indifferent attitude when YOU'RE the one pulling out the hair from YOUR mouth! If that doesn't entice me to want to do business with them again, I don't know what does! Evidently maintaining a good relationship with their customers is worth a measly $2 off. This burger joint is like that guy (we all know one) who takes his first dates to Taco Bell and then can't figure out why they won't return his calls afterward. Overall, it was tasty and the organic products make all the difference in the world. But I don't know that Epic Burger will become one of my regular lunch haunts.
