I love the idea--"clean" burgers and fries--and the execution is successful at a basic level, but some of the details really bother me. For example, despite all the green aspects of this restaurant, they display their menu board on plasma screen monitors; that has to eat up a lot of juice. The burger was great; I noticed that they don't ask you how to cook it, but it came out just right for me. I asked for easy on the sauce, and it probably was, but between it and the meat juices, the sandwich got a little drippy. However, with cheddar and grilled onions on a whole wheat bun, the whole thing was near perfect. The fries, however, were not. They were cold and hard. Clean or not, fries are bad for you. I would prefer that they taste really good as an offset. The ketchup is Heinz Organic. After squeezing and shaking the plastic bottle for a few moments, I removed the cap and discovered that it was a brand-new bottle with the seal still on. [Sigh] Just one of those details, much like the corn-plastic fork which did not survive the meal. Halfway through, one tine had snapped off; by the end, two others were bent at the tips. All I was doing was jagging the fries. It took them ten minutes to make it, but they serve a pretty good chocolate-malt milkshake. Perhaps a tad bit too much malt and a tad bit too little chocolate. But thick and delicious just the way I like it. The first two songs that I heard were "I Want You" by Elvis Costello and "Ring of Fire," and they were also playing IFC movies. Being a burger fanatic, it was only right and a matter of time that Epic Burger and myself became acquainted. Stopped in today for lunch and noticed there are 7 Epic rules on the wall once you get near the register. I am usually good @ following rules so I read them and proceeded to the register to order. I asked the 2 cool brothers behind the counter what would they recommend and they told me "the Epic Burger combo". They also told me I could add toppings such as a fried egg and bacon. I definitely added the bacon & eggs along with cheddar cheese (other options were blue cheese and something else). I also had the option of wheat and white bread...I chose wheat. The combo came with fries and a drink which came out to $12. The burger itself was pretty good, but because I had everything you can think of on the thing, it was hard to hold it together so I had to take huge bites. Visited this place today after going to the Harold Washington Library, which is a stone's throw down State Street. I thought it was okay, but "epic" might be a slightly overblown descriptor. We (being myself and a friend) were there for a late lunch-early dinner (4-something), and since it was rainy it was pretty quiet. I got a combo with burger with grilled onions (a nice option; you can also get raw) and a side of the "Epic sauce" (which I ended up being glad I got on the side; it was mayo-based and full of relish -- eww), fries, and a peanut butter shake. This ran me roughtly $10. The burger was decently cooked (had a nice crispiness from the grill on the outside), but was lacking in essential seasoning (hello, s&p? where are you?); they also don't ask you how much you want your burger done. The grilled onions were good, though. I don't normally go for squishier fries, which these were, but whatever they were cooked in made them taste good, and leaving the skins on was also a good thing (and I'm not always a fan of that method). The big win of the meal, though, hands down, was the PB shake. It was on the thin side, so you didn't burst a blood vessel in your brain trying to suck it through the straw, with an amazing complexity to the flavor (it didn't just taste like Jif + Haagen Daz + blender). I would definitely go back for this. The girl at the counter was a little pushy when I didn't know what I wanted (I had never been there before, and there was not a line behind me; give me a second!) The place is mod-ly decorated with a predominantly orange-brown-and-beige theme that shoots me straight back to my childhood late '70s-era home. Tables along the walls are smaller, for one or two diners, with larger ones in the middle for groups or communal dining; all have modular orange chairs that squidge weirdly on the probably recycled flooring. Dueling flat screens were showing "The Blue Dahlia" on Turner Classic Movies and some documentary on Isaac Mizrahi. A plus is the organic factor, even down to the "Greenware" cups and cutlery, supposedly somehow made of corn. Would Odysseus have crossed oceans for these burgers? Perhaps not. I decided to stop by Epic Burger for their first day of business. I had heard about them in the Columbia Chronicle back in march, and being a fan of burgers, I just had to try it out. When I got there around 6, there was a small line of ten people or so in front of me. I had to wait a few minutes before I got to the front. The interior is nice; there are around 20 tables or so with half being occupied. This portion of service was great, the employees were helpful and cheery. I ordered my double "epic burger" and a strawberry milkshake without much hassle. At Epic, the order station and the pick up station are separate. If you order in, the employees will bring your order to your table, which is a nice touch. If you order out, you wait by the pick up station, which is also the station where they make the smoothies and shakes. You get to watch your shake/smoothie being made, which is great. They use fresh fruit, although they were out of strawberries after they made my milkshake. They also happened to run out of lids for the cups. I got my milkshake in ten minutes and my burger was ready in 15. You can actually see into the kitchen area where they make the food. It seemed chaotic, which I assume will get better as time progresses. Enough of the preliminaries, let's get to the food. The milkshake was great and I have no complaints. The double Epic burger was truly epic. It's huge. At times I felt as though the burger would fall apart, but the whole wheat bun did a good job of holding it together. The meat was fantastic, and you can actually get an (cage-free organic) egg to go on top of the burger, which I did. They also put "epic sauce" on the burger, but you can get it on the side too. The epic sauce kinda tastes like dijon IMO, but can;t really tell for sure. It complemented the burger nicely. Epic Burger prides itself on fresh ingredients every step of the way, and time will tell whether consumers will embrace it and the slightly higher prices that come along with it, but the burger and the shakes are solid, and the minor service issues will be sorted out over time. The problem comes when the food doesn't live up to the title. Not that Epic Burger is bad, it's actually good and the Epic Sauce might even be great but it isn't the best. It's not as good as a Five Guys burger. If I had to compare it to anything it would be a Hardees burger with more options. I looked at all the mixed reviews before coming here and tried not to take too much of it to heart. I wanted to give Epic Burger a fair shake. As it turns out, I actually like it. I loved the bun - nice and soft - and buttered to perfection. (Not like I needed the extra butter!) If you like McDonald's fries, you probably won't like these fries. Me? I liked 'em. Real potatoes. JUICY. That's the one word I would use to describe the burgers at Epic Burger. I wasn't expecting a whole lot, I heard from word of mouth that the burgers were just "okay." But my friend took me here and it was pretty damn good. I ordered the Epic burger with horseradish havarti cheese with grilled onionons, yum. The bun was sweet, not too flimsy where the bun gets all soggy but perfectly snug with the large juicy burger. The tomato/lettuce/pickle were fresh and the fries we ordered were also very fresh, it was like they went in back and cut them from a fresh tapatoes. The burger with cheese, fries and a drink will set you back around $10+. Not bad for what its worth. I'll definitely be back, this time I will order my burger with cheddar cheese and a fried egg on top, I hear that's the way to go. I frequent Epic quite often, but this was my first time placing a web order. The order is placed and paid for, so I head over to the restaurant. I arrive and told the clerk at the front counter my name and I had an order for pickup. It was a Beyond Burger. The clerk told me that he had not put my order in yet. Really? I thought he was joking. I expected my order to at least still be on the griddle, even if it was not ready when I arrived, not sitting in the queue. This makes no sense......I thought the objective of offering online ordering is to give the customer a short wait time and skip the line. So, I asked for a refund. He tells me that I will have to receive the refund from ChowNow, the web vendor Epic uses for online orders. Great.. I ask for the manager, who happened to be nearby. I told her that I placed an online order and it was still in the queue. She shrugs her shoulders and tells me "we're busy". What an absurd thing for a manager to say to a customer. If she says that she did not say that to me, she is lying. I leave and go back to my office.. I contact ChowNow for my refund. The rep at ChowNow tells me that they need to confirm the details with Epic. Okay, no problem. I understand needing to make sure I'm not scamming for a $8 dollar burger. Four days later and I have yet to be refunded. So, I contact ChowNow again and I'm told the manager at Epic Burger has not approved the refund. Seriously?? The burger was not cooking when I arrived at the restaurant, so what is the issue with refunding my money??? This looks and feels like theft to me. Epic can choose to not refund me my money. I will never patronize them again and will tell my colleagues and whomever I hear mention Epic Burger how they took my money for an online order I did not receive and refused to return my money. Unfortunately the epic burger just missed the high mark. This is located near south loop and far away from streeterville. Ordering a burger was painfree with options including egg (+.69), bacon (+.99), and cheese (+.89) with your epic burger. A combo meal is 8.97 before the add ons. The burger unfortunately does not resemble the one pictured on their website. It is a lot thinner but still full of meaty flavor. The wheat bun is unique and balances out the grease. The fries are above average with skin on potato seasoned with sea salt. This is not a cheap burger once you throw on the add-ons but I would recommend the egg on top with epic sauce. Unfortunately for the price you pay you might be off getting a steak house burger at a restaurant... Also our first order came out wrong missing the egg and cheese. When I was recently visiting Chicago for a uber quick trip, I decided Epic Burger was on the list of MUST VISIT when I realized one was less than a mile away from where I was staying. Not like your McDonald assembly line. The burgers ? Yes - Excellent. One of the best burgers that I have had in a long time. A double burger only costs $6.99. Their fries are hand-cut and fresh - Very tasty. This restaurant uses only natural/organic/pasture raised beef. The toppings for the burger( lettuce, tomato, bacon, and cheese is all fresh and organic. You can also get an egg as a topping. Cage free eggs. The buns are either whole wheat or white and baked fresh daily. What a difference that fresh, natural ingredients make. You are only paying a little more but it is well worth it ! The staff was very friendly and helpful. While you are dining, their waitstaff will come to your table and ask if you want anything else. This ever happen to you at any other hamburger place ? The girl at the counter could tell I was new here and pleasantly allowed me to take my time and walk through the options. Junior Epic Burger with bacon and fried egg, fries and soda. I have her a hard time about having Pepsi products, not Coke, but she pleasantly ribbed me back and we agreed that I wasn't there for soda anyway. Fries were Fresh cut, and fresh cooked. If you've been to a Penn Station- same thing. Good compliment to the burger. Side salad is also an option. The burger was good- don't know that I'd say "epic" but good. If I had it to do again, I'd get the regular size burger and/or Epic sauce to get the real experience. Shame on me... I'll do better next time. That said, bacon and egg made for a good taste, but not unlike a Steak n Shake. The bun was a step above other burgers.
