We came here based on these good reviews but please don't let those reviews mislead you. Just as others mentioned, there was only one waiter serves tables, therefore you got to wait a long time for everything; besides, his attitude was really bad but it might just because he was too busy and exhausted. We were actually disappointed at everything except the bread. The starter bread, honey butter and olive oil were amazingly awesome! However, the customer service, the salad and the entrees were just...hmmm We went there at 6:30, but we didn't get our entrees until 9!!!! We thought we could finish our dinner by 8 since we were there early. It turned out we spent a few hours waiting our food...btw the AC was freezing, while we were waiting, we both felt we are about to get a cold. read more

My boyfriend and I came here for Valentine's Day last night, and were completely blown away. To start the evening, we were presented with several complimentary appetizers as we ordered our wine. The sugared nuts came first, followed by delicious warm bread with oil & vinegar and honey ricotta. The wine was a fruity, citrusy Sauvignon Blanc that paired amazingly with our appetizers of escargot and mushroom cakes. My boyfriend and I are obsessed with escargot, and the portion we received was huge along with out of this world tasty. The mushroom cake was great as well, and I loved the avocado puree that accompanied the dish. We also received a grapefruit sorbet pallet cleanser, which was very well received by a grapefruit lover like me. For our main meals, we shared the lamb, along with the short rib special. The short rib was so tender that you could cut it with a spoon, and the lamb was absolutely the best that I've ever had. Everything was incredibly full of flavor and fresh, which is why we ate every scrap of food on the plate. Unfortunately that made us too full for dessert, but we still indulged on the complimentary dark chocolate before we left. I've never had such a beautifully intimate dinner in New Paltz, and End Cut will certainly be the place that I recommend to anybody who wants some of the same. Well the food is good , but it is extremely overpriced. The menu is reduced to only a very limited selection. The place is tiny . Beautiful atmosphere, but the owner was not very nice . Your pretty much squished into a tiny room . The drinks taste good but can make you puke later . Super sweet !!! And very expensive like your sitting next to the o en and not a highway ??? It can be a nice date night if you call a week in advance and plan to spend over 100 dollars and maybe still be hungry depending if you got lucky on your entree choice . read more

Starting with the warm homemade bread - yes homemade that was served with this delicious ricotta / honey mixture started the meal off on the right note. For appetizers we had the crab cakes and the special fig salad both delicious. The crab cakes had tons of crab meat which you don't find at a lot of places. In between the appetizers and main was a grapefruit sorbet palate cleaner, YUM great touch. For mains we ordered the cod and the salmon. LOVED both dishes especially the salmon.. perfectly cooked and crispy skin. This was served with a parsnip stuffed onion YUM again. Had to try dessert and went with the flourless chocolate cake (made in house) which was also super delicious. I also love the ambiance here, great lighting and decorations. Also worth noting are the bottles of wine are 25 bucks or less which is amaaaaazing in my opinion coming from the city. The food is excellent and would've given 5 stars but it was SO loud inside I couldn't have conversations with people at my table. The was a party of 10 in the room and they were screaming to each other and getting drunk. Felt like I was in a bar but spending hundreds of dollars to eat a beautiful dinner in a lousy bar. Too bad staff didn't ask them to quiet down, and was unable to enjoy the piano player. Went home with a splitting headache. It was supposed to be a special night out for a celebration. Loved the ambiance of the place. We went one cold Saturday night. We sat by the fireplace while a pianist played in the background. For appetizer ordered the stuffed clams. They were delicious. For dinner, my husband had the NY Strip paired with a smooth glass of Montepulciano. The steak had a nice crust on the outside. The herb butter was a nice touch, it melted in your mouth. Definitely a steak cooked to perfection. The mashed potatoes were fresh and creamy. I got the scallop special cooked with spinach and farro. It had an orange citrus to it and was delicious. The dessert was probably the least favorite. We got apple cobbler with gelato. The cobbler tasted like applesauce but the gelato was decent. The check was served with a decadent piece of milk chocolate and a little bag of homemade granola. Overall, I would definitely recommend going here if you are in the mood for a steak, a nice glass of red wine, and relaxing atmosphere! read more

Be warned: if you go here you will wait a minimum of an hour for your food and will most likely have the worst service too. This is essentially a glorified Apple Bees and even they have better service. We waited 20 minutes for water, 40 minutes for bread, an hour and twenty minutes for the entrees. We almost walked out because it was so long and when we submitted our order there was only two other tables of a couple and a single person. No explanations or apologies. The mustard cod paired with roasted potatoes and green beans ($22) was unbalanced. Also if you're charging $22, there should be asparagus - not frozen green beans. But an 1.33 hr in I would've eaten anything. My boyfriend got the mushroom ravioli which is by far probably your safest bet if someone is ever holding you hostage in this restaurant and force feeding you. To top it off, the waitress is the worst I've ever seen in my life. If I was able to pay by card (which you're not despite the ridiculous prices-it's cash only) I would've wrote Food: B-, Service: Z. They lost tables because no one would be greeting at the door and if she did manage to take her leisurely pace there fast enough, she would act offended if they didn't have a reservation for an almost empty restaurant. read more

This place was incredible. We were in town for a meeting, and called to see if the restaurant was open. The chef, Jordan, said he was there and though he did not usually serve on that night, he would cook for us and to just come. We didn't know what to expect, but we were so welcomed and the food and atmosphere were so relaxed and delightful that we will go back the next time we are in NP. Quite simply...over the top. Occasionally you encounter a place that crushes it the way End Cut did for us two nights ago, but not in every category. From the "thug-appearance" greeting on the front stoop by the chef, sous chef, and waiter (which sealed the deal that we were going in) to the perfectly balanced visits from the waiter and chef during the meal, it was a culinary experience not to be missed. In New Paltz for my daughter's sports event, we left planning the next drive down from Red Hook. From the escargot served unorthodox style loose in a cream, mushroom, and slivered garlic sauce that almost started a fist fight over the soaked crouton in the bottom of the dish, to the fantastic vanilla bean creme brûlée that had us slapping spoons to get the last tidbits, the bookends only highlighted the delicious entrees. Mustard crusted salmon and a bone-in pork chop filled the middle of the meal, and both were hits. While I personally prefer my chop slightly less finished (my fault perhaps for not requesting it "rare"), it was still juicy and easy to cut. The salmon was cooked to perfection and was as fresh as it gets. Both came accompanied by delicious pairings of perfectly prepared vegetables and legumes. To miss End Cut is to shortchange yourself of a culinary experience to rival any Manhatten or Boston establishment. While there are many varied places to eat in New Paltz, this was a gem worth the "A" list. read more

It all started with a call. We wanted to celebrate our friends birthday (a milestone). Seven in the party for dinner Tuesday. And the birthday boy loves duck. I called End Cut and Jordan, the owner, answered. I asked if he had room for us and explained our story. He said he is closed on Tuesday and Wednesday but for 7 people he would open for us. You're kidding? Nope...see you then. We felt honored that he would do this. FF to last night. We showed up 10 minutes early and Jordan was standing on the front porch just hanging out on a beautiful night in New Paltz. We introduced ourselves and started playing food and drink geography. His pedigree is great with a family Catskill history, telling us why it's called End Cut, an old style prime rib way to order. All the Borscht Belt regulars would order an "end cut" because it was the biggest piece of the rib with the most seasoning and most likely well done. Only two to a rib and people would pay off (bribe) their waiters to get one. Our group arrives and we truly are the only ones in the place. It is really closed. Jordan introduces himself to everyone and brings out menus and wine lists. It started to get complicated with vast differences in ages and tastes so I suggested that we all share and order a bunch of dishes. Everyone was up for that but what should order? Jordan Schor, the owner and all around nice guy and the only person other than us in the restaurant, brought out homemade breads and roasted spiced nuts while serving us our celebratory bottle of DP that was at least 15 years old but chilled and still great. So while we were getting toasted he asked what can he get us. I said to him "Don't tell us what we are getting, just make it fun for us as long as you make at least one duck dish." He said "I love it!!!" We continued with the restaurant geography game. As this was all our first time at End Cut in New Paltz and all of us having so much Hudson Valley/Woodstock history. For the next two hours we had a FEAST and each dish he brought out was more fun than the last. It was dark and cozy in the restaurant that seats 35. Hence no pictures but the food was picture perfect. From the appetizers of Meatballs on Polenta with Marinara and Parm/Reg to Escargot out of the shells with mushrooms and the most delicious butter cream reduction or maybe not with freshest local shrooms to Roasted Cauliflower with local Goat Cheese and a Balsamic reduction that played off of all the differences to a Grapefruit Sorbet to cleanse your palate to Grilled Salmon, to Roasted Cod to an Amazing Roasted Duck finished two ways with very Crispy Yummy Skin to Fall Off the Bone Short Ribs to a perfect Filet of Beef to Circles of Vegetables with a Cheese binder to hold it together lightly fried and eye rolling good. I started to feel bad that Jordan brought out a zillion plates and silverware and steak knives but we all tasted everything and were able to take three containers of deliciousness home. We were so sated by this feast that we only had room for his delicious French Pressed locally sourced coffee. There are desserts on the menu but we were too full to even look. A short sidebar. As we were settling our cash only bill and preparing to leave, there was a couple sitting by the door enjoying their meal as much as we did. I asked them if they had been to End Cut before? They said "No". They said "It was a little after 9 pm and they were across the street at a Greek Restaurant that had just refused to seat them. Jordan was in that restaurant getting a soda of some kind, heard the conversation and said to us, "I'm open now. I'll make you dinner!" And there they were. We will return and soon!! Great food in a cozy and conversational setting. The music was as soft as the fresh made bread--two styles (regular and focaccia) with two toppings (honey topped cheese and herbed olive oil). The tiny scoop of blood orange sorbet was a nice little palate cleanser. We had the mushroom cakes and the crab appetizer. The hearty mushroom cakes were my favorite dish of the night. My friend had the scallops on mushroom risotto (I suppose mushrooms were in season) and I had the salmon. The salmon was cooked to a good texture but felt a little lacking in flavor. The veggies beneath it were also a bit bland except for the basil poking through. Next time, I might go for one of the special entrees instead. That said, the rest of the meal was quite distinct, and none of the dishes were bad. Overall, very good for a satisfying, leisurely dinner. read more

I have been passing this place for some time, finally decided to try it out...homerun people! From the moment you walk in the staff make you feel like family. My girlfriend had the scallop and lobster over mushrooms, amazing. I started with the onion soup and then the filet, which was cooked to perfection. In between the apps and dinner a small spoon was laid before each of us....what was this for??....hmmm....they bring you a scoop of sorbet to clean your pallet...omg, that felt like dessert. We did get the creme brulee over cheese cake that we inhaled. People, dont just keep driving past this place, stop in for dinner it will not dissapoint. read more

The food and the hospitality were exceptional. Roasted nuts to start, the goat cheese and honey with dipping oil for the roll was delicious. My wife is gluten free she had the coconut shrimp appetizer and I had the beet salad fantastic. Then came the sorbet. Then came our entries, perfectly cooked salmon and the pork chop cooked to perfection. And then there's Chef Jordan, old school guy, he's like it was at Toot Shor's and Elaines in NYC. This place deserves a sixth star. Just wow. First of all, everything was delicious. The braised short ribs were so tender, they melted in your mouth. I would sell my brother into indentured servitude for the recipe for the sauce on the duck. Portions were generous, and the complimentary homemade bread, and sorbet were also delicious. On top of the ridiculous food, the prices are very reasonable. And, they charge $25 for any bottle of wine. Pretty sweet. Highly recommended, in case you needed me to spell it out for you. read more

We made a reservation ahead of time. We get there and stand in the restaurant for 5 full minutes without a single person saying a word to us even though the bartender was 10 feet away. The staff was aware we were there because we could hear them talking about where to put us. Finally we got seated, got our menu and then sat for almost 15 minutes without being able to even order drinks. We ended up leaving without ordering anything which is unfortunate because the food looked great online. I understand it's a difficult time for everyone but it takes zero effort to acknowledge people when they walk in the door. read more

We are in town from Philly, and we had a feeling that this restaurant would be amazing with it's interesting and creative menu and we were 100% correct! We started off with the Escargot appetizer, French onion soup, and Poached pear salad. Everything was delicious! It didn't hurt that we sat across from the classical guitar player who made the meal so relaxing. For dinner we had the braised short ribs and the New York strip special which were cooked perfectly- tender and succulent. The chef is so personable too. I walked out of this place scratching my head, thinking to myself, "what just happened..." you can see from my reviews that I am tough on restaurants. We stumbled on this place, and we were blown away. You don't find kitchens this talented and caring so much about quality, to almost an unreasonable degree. You don't even see this level of culinary precision in most of manhattan's top restaurants. it was a fresh air of hope that there is good food after all, with almost all restaurant falling short. The hardwood floors, the classy music, the attentive service, the warm welcome, the simple menu, the top shelf alcohol selection, and then there is the food. From the starters to the entres, to the concluding desert, it's perfection. Meats are cooked to perfection, moist, seasoned, and savory. Sauces properly reduced and well-balanced; greens are fresh. With table cloth setting and outdoor seating, the only room for improvement is perhaps the service could be professionally elevated a tad bit to match the kitchen's output, but I can not give End Cut anything less than a solid Five Stars. read more

Tucked away on a side street and websites and social media that sometimes contradict and confuse it's a minor challenge to get to the table. But persevere as it's well worth it. Stumbled upon this gem (completely by accident) over the weekend and couldn't have been more pleased! I came into town from NYC and was looking for a nice restaurant to have dinner with my parents. After being put on a wait list at a nearby restaurant down the street we were burning time when I spotted this place (NOTE: It's on a side street off the main strip so you need to sort of be wondering around to even find it). Despite being practically empty I was immediately drawn to the words "French-Italian" and the chef who was standing outside. I know this sounds stupid, but I just kind of thought to myself..."that guy looks like he can cook." I quickly did a yelp spot-check and confirmed what I had suspected--this place is NEW. As I walked over to look at the menu I spotted all sorts of interesting things, but mainly, Duck. My father loves Duck and he was being grouchy, so it was a no brainer. As we entered the restaurant we picked the window seat. Christian, our waiter greeted us warmly and talked through a few items on the menu and the wine selection. Let's get down to business. This is what we ordered: Wine -Pinot Grigio. Thought it was very good. As someone mentioned they try to pick the best wines they can and price them all at $25. I think everyone wins here. The customer doesn't break the bank, and the restaurant still probably enjoys good margins. Bread -Warm, a few different types with olive oil--Delicious. Appetizer -Wild mushroom Cakes with avocado pesto and red pepper coulis--This was absolutely fantastic 5/5. I think it's a must order dish. Christian also recommended a side salad with beets which went along with this dish famously. Entrees: -Dad--no surprise--Roasted Duck with cassis berry sauce--Unbelievable 5/5. -Me--Shrimp special--5/5--should be added to the standard menu. -Mom--Braised short ribs--Very good, mom liked it, but I'll give a 4/5. Honestly I just thought the other 2 dishes were better. Dessert: I'm forgetting but I think it was Chocolate Mouse Cake and it was phenomenal. Live in New Paltz now recently lived in Queensbury. Since coming back to my hometown I had to visit restaurants that opened after I left New Paltz 7 yrs ago. I never knew about this establishment until I visited this restaurant tonight. My favorite food has always been chicken parmigiana, so naturally that is what I ordered. This is the BEST I've ever tasted. The restaurant has a cozy atmosphere, and the service was excellent as well as the the welcome we received when we entered the restaurant. Can not say how much we enjoyed the evening. If you are in the area visit this exceptional restaurant--you won't be disappointed! read more

Also the cash only policy is highly inconvenient (taking into account the price of the food) and it seems the restaurant wants to avoid paying extra taxes. While I was dining here, the ATM was not working, even though I called in advance and they said there was an ATM in the premise, thus I had to leave and go find a cash point which is not what I want to do after a dinner. read more

Four of us had a wonderful birthday dinner last evening at the restaurant. Elegant and delicious food in a casual environment. And one of the best chocolate birthday cakes ever! Lovely and intimate setting, quiet enough to hear each other gush over the food (unlike other places in our town where we can barely hear our partners talk).We shared the cauliflower tart and the mushroom cakes, and two of us had the salmon. The duck expert at the table had that dish and our fourth member had the short ribs. Great food for us all. We always can tell whether a restaurant cares about good food by the bread basket. The chef must have graduated from the culinary institute of, bland. Whilst the waiter must have graduated from the waiter institute of, I don't give a fuck about my tip. I'll give it one star because the complimentary blood orange sorbet was actually amazing. It tasted like biting into a fresh juicy blood orange, bursting with flavor. The apple tart de tatin, which we were told was made by a friend of the chef (hence why we got it), was also rather delicious. Besides these culinary triumphs, let's get to the stuff nightmares are made of...The mushroom cakes were bland with a tasteless avocado puree. The scallop with mushroom risotto was just as bland and the risotto itself was too dry to, well...be a risotto. The cauliflower mascarpone ravioli in pistachio pesto sauce was also bland and had no pesto flavor which was odd. I had to ask for salt and pepper which I've never had to do before. The people next to us asked for salt and pepper and so did the couple next to them. I quite frankly don't understand all the good reviews on here? Besides all this, the front of the house was a mess. I waited quite some time between dishes and the waiter kept running away before we could get a word in. Flagging down other waiters during the course of our meal seemed like the only way to go. I really wanted to like you End Cut. I really really did...but I simply cannot. Especially for the $100 price tag that accompanied my poor excuse of a meal.
