Already one of my favorite restaurants in Chattanooga- today confirmed it - perhaps the best ceviche I've ever had. Instead of the micro pieces of fish amid a sea of onion this ceviche a bold combination of large chunks of fish with a citrus marinade that doesn't destroy the taste or texture - the empanadas are excellent and drinks fantastic. I am reluctant to recommend only for the fact that if this place becomes overpopulated I'll never get a table here. Oh and I like the food as well read more

Our party was extremely excited to celebrate my friends 25th birthday here, but this is not the place to go to celebrate. The layout and design is beautiful and quirky. The food was decent. I wouldn't say it's authentic Cuban. It seems they have severely toned down the spices and flavors. The staff was not welcoming at all. The service killed the experience completely. My husband and I stopped in around 8pm on a Saturday just for drinks and an app, not realizing it would crazy busy. A waiter greeted us at the door and informed us the wait would be king for a table but welcomed us to one of the bar areas. We happily took a seat at the outdoor bar near one if the cozy fires. They had a live band playing kinda bluesy music which added to the eclectic decor. We had really great service for such a busy time and our drinks, the Hemingway and mata dolor were refreshingly unique and super delicious. We also shared the yucca fries which fresh and very yummy. First visit was today. Poor lackluster service. It was hot inside. My mimosa was warm, the food so so and just not like and Cubano restaurant cantina I have ever been to. They need to take a trip to Miami or now Cuba, and see the awesomeness of the Cuban culture or be reminded of it! The waitress was very poor! Doubt this party of 4 will be back! First time trying this place out tonight. Loved the atmosphere, staff was super friendly and did an awesome job taking car of us. I ordered three of their cocktails, the Hemingway, Mojito and the El Revolucionario. The Hemingway was ok, I'm not a huge fan of champagne cocktails, but I thought I would try it out. It's a very small order, and I felt it was a bit overpriced. The mojito was good, but I felt that it could be better. Now the El Revolucionario is probably one of the best drinks I have ever had, it's a coffee tequila cocktail, and went very well with the cigar the bartender helped me pick out. My only suggestion is to change this size of the drinks. I don't mind paying 7-12 dollars for a drink, just thought they were a tad too small. Overall this is a very cool place and is worth checking out, I will for sure be going back again. read more

So happy this is on the North Shore. The food is excellent as well as the prices and portion sizes. The decor and look of the inside of the restaurant really makes you feel like you are in Cuba (or at least what I would imagine Cuba looks like). Drinks are top notch as well. I was happy with my experience here. I have never had Cuban food before but I went here with my Cuban friend who grew up in Miami and whenever they brought out his sandwich he was so happy they had the proper authentic bread on it, I believe she said it came from Miami, he basically inhaled his food. I wasn't all that impressed - could have been the time of day or how busy the place was, but the mojitos seemed watered down...the Cuban egg roll (which is a staple from Ceniza) was awesome but the plantain nachos were much better at Ceniza (which is now sadly closed). Tried this from dinner delivered. The dinner deliverer was great and timely. The food another story. All the meat was fat fat fat. We both ordered black beans as sides which were not delivered. When I called they said I could have the black beans delivered - in an hour- or I could have. Credit for a side... all entrees come with a side. Then the person who answered the phone hung up on me. First and last experience here. The only reason there are any stars is because the meatbthat wasn't fat laden was very flavorful. What a disappointment read more

Tried a number of things and some were hits while others were misses. The atmosphere is fun and laid back. Felt authentic, although if it's really hot out you may be uncomfortably warm. The rum selection is the best I've come across in Chattanooga and the bartender was very knowledgeable and helpful. Our waiter was decent but not very attentive, that's why I went to the bar for help with drinks. Tried a few mixed drinks and they were good but not very big. The ceviche was very good, lots of fish and citrus just the way I like it. Not too much filler. Masitas de Puerco was a fried pork appetizer that nobody at the table liked. The outside was so crispy it made the pieces very chewy and didn't have much flavor. Do not recommend. On the other hand, the marinated braised pork entree (lombo) was delicious. Tostones nachos appetizer was a good mix of flavors. Unfortunately, again the tostones were fried really hard, difficult to cut with a knife, impossible with a fork. Good food overall, just maybe avoid the fried dishes. read more

My first trip to Embargo, I went in with no expectations and ended up being very impressed. We had the Empanadas which were really great (not quite up to Terra Nostra but still fantastic. We also had Ropa Vieja, and Media Noche (sand which) the food was all very good...the service was fantastic but not overwhelming. The drinks were good and Cuban ....not exceptional. The Mojitos were exceptional, and they have a happy hour that has great prices for drinks and apps before 6. I had the Cuban sandwich for dinner and loved every bite. My only complaint was the lack of air conditioner or fans. I loved the open air feel, but when it's 98 outside, the heat and flies were too much. read more

Hey Brittany, if the food is so amazing and authentic Cuban is that why you had to close the Fusion version Cenizas in Ooltewah? The food stunk, the Black beans were nothing but bland and watery and the menu was way over priced. Stop trying to reinvent Cuban food for the Americanos, give them the real ethnic thing from Miami not some watered down version. Real Cuban mojo is not just olive oil and garlic. It includes Lemon, garlic, olive oil, red onions and a little bit of vinegar. I would be happy to visit and teach you all how to make it so your Tostones and boiled Yuca would be a real hit. I'm definitely a fan! Having moved here from Miami, FL, a couple years ago, I have been missing Cuban food in any iteration since I got here. The Environment: It's a throwback to a Cuban style cantina, with many authentic touches that the locals here in TN may not understand. The paint on the walls is weathered. Some of the chairs and tables appear to be mismatched. And there is a big window by the bar area to sit and congregate. Another reviewer complained about this window, but that reviewer is puro gringo. In every little place in Miami, Cuba, and my native Puerto Rico, this window area is a necessity for the locals to walk up, order a quick drink or snack, and chat the day away. This is not a corporate, by the numbers, franchise restaurant, but an authentic family owned Cuban bar/eatery. The Food: So far, I've only had the Cuban sandwich with Plantain chips - which tastes authentic and done correctly. Why? THE BREAD. This is Cuban bread, a.k.a "Pan de Manteca", not French bread or some other knock-off. I ran into a lady that (I thought was a manager but...) turned out to be the one of the owners, and she explained that they're shipping the Cuban bread straight from Miami, FL (where they're from) to Chattanooga. The Staff: I didn't spend that long there, but I plan to go back soon because of the food, the environment, and (especially) the staff. The staff was friendly and my food came quickly. I thought I lost my wallet, so I asked a server to see if I left my wallet back at my vehicle. Handing the valet my only keys, he went around the corner, and came back with both my keys and my wallet. I tipped the bartender/server $20 for my $8 meal for this reason alone. These are great people. The Verdict: I almost took 1 star away because... there's no Cuban coffee on the menu. If you've had Cuban coffee, you know what I mean. But this place is the start of something great in Chattanooga! The limited menu has more to do with the facility size than anything else. The owners are planning to open a larger restaurant in Ooltewah, that they told me would have a larger kitchen and bigger menu. Until that place is up and running, Embargo '62 will be my go-to cantina. I wish them much success, and wholly recommend this restaurant! read more

After being told the wait was 15 minutes we finally got a seat 45 minutes later at the side bar facing the waiting area. We waited 15 more minutes for a waitress to take our drink order and 15 more minutes for our drinks. We placed our order and 45 minutes later after suffering through the discomfort of the seats, the stifling heat and the cigar smoking from the waiting area we got up and left. Cigars and available which have reasonable pricing, with a nice cigar/smoking area with Authentic Miami domino tables setup to have fun. The fried sweet plantains are excellent. Coming from varying cuisine styles from multiple cCntral and South American and Caribbean countries. The food is amazing. Came thru Chattanooga from Miami and checked out Embargo 62. Great experience all around. Waitress was very helpful in explaining the seasonal list of craft cocktail options and began to explain the menu but I stopped her since We grew up on the stuff. My wife ordered the pan con bistec and loved it. I had the Cuban sliders and also was very impressed with each of the three different interpretations. I was surprised to find such authentic Cuban food in Tennessee, but what really blew us away were the yuca fries which are drenched in mojito before being flash fried to perfection. Something I had never seen done, and definitely a must taste! The guava and cheese empanadas were delicious for dessert. Highly recommend this place! read more

We ate lunch there on a weekday, so it wasn't crowded and service was fast. The lechon was tender and flavorful, as was the cuban sandwich. Plenty of food so we took home a meal's worth. We parked about half a block away. Nice ambiance but I'd like to respectfully make one suggestion to cut down on the noise level - pad the chair legs so they don't screech when moved across the floor. With metal legs, a concrete floor, and high open ceiling, my lunch partner was cringing every time someone moved a chair. With padding you might also find that patrons don't raise their voices so they can hear each other. Thanks! read more
