This is one of the best places I have found to eat in Chattanooga. The food and service are consistently excellent, and the experience is reliable every time. The bathrooms are always clean, which I appreciate. Paid street parking is usually easy to find, though during busy hours it can take a little more time. The veggie fajitas are an absolute treat and full of flavor. The guacamole is fresh and perfectly seasoned, and the salsa is truly top notch. One of the most delightful surprises is that the churros are vegan, and they are unforgettable. The Papillón dish is especially meaningful. It can be made vegan and comes from the owner's grandmother's recipe in Guatemala. That personal touch really shines through and makes the menu feel inspired and unique. There used to be a young blonde male bartender who was hands down one of the best servers I have ever had. He was personable and somehow remembered both your order and your conversations even months later. That level of hospitality really stood out. This place was AMAZING! This is the first restaurant while visiting the south that had truly authentic tasting Latin food. I am soo happy we went here. I had lost hope on finding good authentic Latin food out here. I know it exists, just next to impossible to find. I was weary when I saw they put the "cheese sauce" on several items, I've learned to modify orders without it. First place that had a real tomatillo green salsa. I don't normally gush, but this joint ROCKS! Stopped in on a happenstance and it was amazing. The interior is modern Latin-American inspired but not too over the top. It was a cold, quiet Thursday night so we were seated quickly. We ordered 2 "carne asada" dinners, a caldo de res (beef soup) and a tortilla chicken soup. The flank steak was seasoned well, juicy and delicious. My beef soup was the best I've had to date. The sides...rice, beans and such are all prepared very well too. I didn't order a tequila because we were headed to Birmingham. Their selection is quite impressive. We tried the banana rumba and flan for dessert. The Rumba had great flavor but was somewhat mushy and needs a crispy element (maybe that's how it's supposed to be) but the flan was perfect and one of our top 5 ever! I spoke with the manager and told him how much we enjoyed the entire experience. Very nice young man, we spoke Spanish for a bit. I will literally make a trip back just to eat here. This was my second time coming here after visiting Chattanooga a year ago. My wife and I loved it the second time also. In my opion, this hangar steak is one of the best steaks I've ever had under $30. It's really exceptional flavor and tenderness. It's also a good size and very filling. He couldn't tell us why the chicken in the Pollo y Waffles was Guatemalan. (Note: It was the spices in the breading used.) My Pollo y Waffles was not good. The 'chicken tenders' were more scraps then tenders, and they were dry. They also use cheap baking powder in the Waffles, I could taste the aluminum. We stopped at Mayan Kitchen when driving through town before the holidays because I saw mention of its dedicated vegan options. Unfortunately, the TL;DR is that they served me a dish with meat in it. Disturbing because I had several bites before realizing it. I ordered the vegetarian pepian from the "vegan selections" portion of the menu, which appeared promising at first with its hearty portion and plentiful vegetables cooked in a thick stew-like preparation. Several spoonsful in, I noticed there was a chunk of something that looked suspiciously like beef or pork. My husband, who eats meat, confirmed my suspicions. It's easy these days with so many eerily imitation meat substitutes to mistakenly eat something that is real meat. I pointed this out to our server who was really nice and he took it over to his manager and said he'd try to take it off the bill. He came back and told me that it was impossible that there was meat in the dish and that they wouldn't be able to take it off the bill. I don't blame anything on him. I do blame this on the manager who should have come over to me instead. I firmly pointed out that I would not be paying for a meal that I barely touched (and thankfully, I hadn't eaten more of it or I would have been extremely upset as I haven't eaten meat in over 30 years). I just don't get why they'd argue with someone. I don't know nor do I care how the meat got in the bowl. I do think when a restaurant has a vegan portion of the menu, they need to be extra careful with food prep. In the end, they removed it from the bill, thankfully, which a restaurant should do regardless of why a customer might have sent an entree back, no less for violating an expressed dietary restriction. read more

The pazole soup was excellent. It seemed pretty authentic, and it had some great flavors. The broth was savory, and I added lime juice for some sourness and a lot of the chili oil for that heat . The pork was very soft, and I added all the fixings - radish, lettuce, onion, and tortilla shells. I also liked the fact that the tortilla shells came out whole instead of in tiny broken chips or pieces. Starter salad was good too. Great quality and quantity meal for a great price. My only complaint was that they rain out of tres leches cake, but it ended up being good for me because that night, it was tres leches or nothing. read more

The meat is extremely flavorful and has a nice grilled taste. It reminds me of the street tacos in Mexico. The pineapple in the tacos was extremely fresh and very sweet. My Californian mind is legitimately blown by how good these are. The tacos came with a bean soup that was just alright, but still pretty tasty. I would order this again. Though just passing a few days in Chattanooga, I had such a lovely night at Mayan. The atmosphere was elegant with beautiful wall murals, lighting, and good vibes, although most patrons seemed to be wearing shorts and casual clothing. Up front, a band played various music genres, and I thought the singer had an angelic voice, accompanied by a great saxophonist who occasionally roamed the restaurant as he played. If I lived in town, I'd come back repeatedly just for the band. But I can't just focus on the band. My meal was deliciously top notch! I ordered the hanger steak Tikal. Very tender, perfectly seasoned and cooked, and a large portion, but I couldn't stop myself from eating every bite. I saw no seasoning on top of the rosemary potatoes, yet the rosemary flavoring was definitely there. My sautéed veggies were great. The charro beans were a first for me--definitely tasty. The chimichurri tasted homemade. The meal was also supposed to include a queso sauce that was never delivered, though I tried my husband's and preferred the chimichurri. My husband has the churrascco al carbon, loved it -- but said my hanger steak was more tender. His came with Guatemalan salsa, refried beans, sautéed onions, rice and tortillas. After our dinner, we moved up front near the bar and watched the last set of the band. had wine to finish, though I noted some frozen concoction spinning in a machine that looked awfully tempting. read more
