Not my first choice, and it looked like it might be blocked off by sidewalk construction (it was still open). The place heavily promoted iconography of El Salvador; I like my Latin American food but the distinctions between the numerous countries still largely elude me. It's clearly important to them though, as some passion went into this place. Starting out with a horchata yielded a nutty beverage (when this is done properly, it has a lot of ground sesame seeds) which was quite rich and not excessive in its sweetness. My vegetarian platter, on the other hand, was heavy on carbs but excellent in variety. Rice, beans, corn, yuca, a bit of plantain, it was all there. I wondered where the hot sauce was, only to find that what they introduced as a mango salsa also had habanero. We were in town for a soccer tournament.... (I feel that's how I start every review lately...travel team) ok, that's just to say this place was in the proximity and I'm not familiar with the area at all. There is street parking only which can be a down sometimes. But we made it work. We wanted some Latin flavor and they deliver. It felt very authentic and the portions were decent for the price. Under new ownership, and unfortunately it shows -- especially when it comes to management. The food itself was flavorful, which makes the rest of this experience even more disappointing. After finishing our meal, we were sitting and chatting when a cockroach appeared at our table. I discreetly informed our waitress, who was clearly mortified and immediately took care of it. I asked to speak with a manager, and what followed was worse than the roach itself. The man who came over was dismissive, blamed the exterminator - and "apologized" because the previous owners left behind their collection of roaches. He acted as though dining in the presence of cockroaches was normal and even suggested we should be thankful it wasn't worse. There was no attempt to make things right, no concern for our comfort, and no accountability. His solution? He promised it would be better "next time" as if we would be brave enough to risk our health on a future visit. Seeing a cockroach in a restaurant is disgusting -- but the manager's attitude was even more so. read more

Terrible. Seriously, this is probably the worst Latin American food I've ever had. My wife had the steak and it was full of gristle and grease. I had the tostones. Although they were edible, they were far from good. The meat was actually cold and tasted like it came from a can. Hardly any spice or flavor. Not only was the food pretty weak, it was pricey and didn't come with chips or much else. Pretty disappointing because we wanted to have a special meal and enjoy a new restaurant. But, Conga sorely was lacking in all respects. The only positive is the food came out quickly (however, that could've been because we got some cold leftovers). Still, that isn't much of a redeeming quality since we could've gotten fast service at Taco Bell and the taste would've been better than this. Avoid. There's so many other good restaurants in Chattanooga. For decent Latin American food, go to Mayan Kitchen on Broad St. MUCH better than Conga. read more

Thank you to Yelp for helping us find this gem of a restaurant when we were visiting Rock City in Chattanooga. The name of the restaurant is what caught my attention. It reminded me of Gloria Estefan and the Miami Sound Machine of the 1980's lol. When we walked in we were immediately greeted and seated. The menu offered a wide range of appetizers and "platters" as well as beverages. Mind you, their platters are huge and can be enjoyed family style. We ordered choripanes which are four mini Argentinian hot dogs that really a toasted baguette filled with chorizo and topped with chimichurri sauce. I had never had these before and they were superb! We also had empanadas (beef), popusas (spinach and cheese), and a platter of nachos (chicken) that was much more than I expected. Everything we ordered left us enchanted as each order was freshly prepared and beautifully presented. The tostones barbacoa we had never heard of so we gave it a try. These are smashed plantains topped with barbacoa and guacamole. They taste much better than they sound! We also ordered their Caribbean, Vegetarian, and Salvadoran platters. The Salvadorean was our favorite because it was such a variety of food; two popusas, grilled choroizo, a chicken tamal, and a few more items. We were a party of six and considering how much food we ordered, together with our beverages, our total bill was more than reasonable. So my intention was to have lunch elsewhere, but they were closed unexpectedly, so two doors down was Conga Latin Food and decided why not? Dinning area is very spaced out, so anyone should feel safe. I am not that familiar with Cuban food, so asked the waiter what he recommended. He showed me two mains that would give me a good intro to the cuisine and I chose the Salvadorean: pork & cheese pupusa, chicken tamal, chorizo sausage, rice & beans, and avocado, crema, slaw, and various sauces on the side. As I write this, it is dawning on me that the sausage was independent of the pupusa...it was on top so I thought it was meant to be eaten line a taco...think I missed the mark on that one. Ah well, c'est la vie! I will say the pupusa by itself was interesting and glad I ate some of it without the sausage. However, my favorite was the Tamal! I've never had one that was so tender! The masa was fluffy and delicate. The tamales I have had previously were dense and more masa then filling. Is the difference because of how Cuban tamales are prepared? Just spectacular! Goodness, I got carried away (insert my best southern drawl). I also had the guacamole and it came with chips and fried, crispy, plantains...it was ok. I would definitely go back for the Tamales! I don't understand why this place isn't packed. The food was incredible and the staff were wonderfully friendly! We split some yucca sticks (can't recommend these enough) and I had the Salvadorian Bandeja (this did not disappoint either). To top it off, the horchata was the most authentic horchata I've had since my time in Arizona. 100% recommend going to Conga! I'll definitely be back when I come through Chattanooga again. read more

Decided to pop in to this little restaurant on a visit to Chattanooga. Was not expecting the food to be so authentically delicious! I had the tostones with shredded pork and Guacamole. The flavors were amazing! They also had several house made hot sauces which were also really yummy! Service was prompt, food came out quickly. Staff were all following social distancing guidance. They did have their menus through ToastTab. So all we did was scan the QR code and were able to pull the menus up on our phones. 10/10 would definitely recommend this place if you're looking to try some new Latin food at a good price! read more

Paired with sweet horchata, you got yourself a full blown meal! There was so much that I had to take it home for lunch the next day! Service was prompt. I was surprised the restaurant was open considering it was Memorial Day. However, I was significantly pleased with our waiter. My family and I tried this place for the first time tonight. We couldn't believe the amazing food and wonderful service. We had empanadas, tostones, the chorizo sliders, pupusas, and we brought home churros. Every single dish was better than the last. For me, the tostones with the pork and guacamole was awe inspiring. For my husband, it was the empanadas. For one daughter, it was the pork and cheese pupusas. For my either daughter, she loved the bean and cheese pupusas. We were all in love with the churros. If you go, don't wear tight pants. The family who owns the restaurant was so kind and excited to share their food with us. I might take up jogging just so I can eat here at least once a week. I do wish they were open a little later. I feel like we barely scratched the surface of the menu! If you love Latin food, you will not be disappointed. read more

Decided to come here on the recommendation of a friend- and I sat outside in the front area. It was absolutely delicious. I ordered chips and queso and the beef empanadas. I was a little taken aback by the salsa she brought out- it's not what I am use to but it was amazing. She brought out two little ramekins- one with chimichurri and one with a mango habanero sauce. I mixed this in with my queso and then put on my beef empanadas. So many delicious flavors going on- I didn't want to leave. The lovely woman that served me was so pleasant. The only thing I would change is to have sodas from a fountain. She did bring out a cup of ice with my bottle of Dr Pepper, but a fountain drink would be preferred. Don't miss this place. read more
