Stumbled upon this spot after a trip to the nearby grocery store. It was packed on a weekday evening so thought that seems like a good sign. My husband saw someone eating wings and had a sudden craving so we started there. Y'all... these wings were straight FIRE! We got them hot and they were perfectly crunchy, drenched in delicious hot sauce. Never have I had better wings at a Mexican restaurant. Highly recommend! For my meal I had a combo with a chicken enchilada and a beef soft taco. I liked the beef better than the chicken, but both were good. My husband had the chicken nachos and they were also delicious. This is our new spot for sure! read more

We ordered take out today for lunch. I ordered the low carb burrito bueno and subbed the burrito sauce for cheese dip. I was told there would be an upcharge for cheese dip. I was shocked to see that the upcharge was $2.69 for less than 1 tablespoon of cheese dip. If the upcharge is going to cost that much, there definitely should have been more cheese - extremely disappointed in the cost for this. The burrito itself was good other than it was very dry, no sauce or cheese in the burrito. read more

Great food but the service is lacking. Older gentleman has waited on us multiple times. He was horrible each time. Very disinterested. Brought incorrect food. Items came out at different times. Had to ask for silverware. The food is great. In spite of the horrible service, we keep going back. Go figure. read more

Ordered takeout. Took about 30 minutes for 3 tacos and 1 burrito. They left out half the queso and consommé for birria. Had a drink at the bar while waiting and the "wiper fluid" jug or margarita was about as expected- the bartender was quick at least. read more

Tried this place for takeout for the first time. Online ordering easy and food was promptly ready. Really nothing to complain about. I had the chicken chimichangas. Great flavor, good portion size at a reasonable price. Would definitely recommend that dish to anyone looking for something good. They have a fairly large menu worth exploring, I'm sure they have a lot of other good things as well. Would not hesitate to give this place a shot if your looking for some good quick Mexican food. read more

Well deserving of a four star rating. Excellent and fast service! I had the enchilada plate- cheese, beef, bean, chicken. The chicken, nt usually my favorite, was moist. Most places overcook the chicken so it comes out dry. Not El Agave, they got it right. The food came out fast and hot. Chips were crisp and salsa tased good. The salsa was better than I have had in most Mexican restaurants. If you like Gringo-Mexican come to El Agave! read more

Reasonable price, and big portions! This restaurant is full of so many menu options accommodating everyone. Uniquely enough, this restaurant also has low carb options indicated all along the menu. Never have see that at a Mexican restaurant before. They have 2 for 1 margarita specials that we really enjoyed. I ended up getting the fajita taco salad (not pictured) and it tasted amazing -- 10/10. In addition to the chips and salsa they gave, we also asked if there were any other spicier salsa options. They have habanero salsa if you're looking for a spicier kick! I would definitely recommend checking this place out. read more

They boast the best Mexican in Chattanooga and I have to say, I have NEVER been disappointed there. (And there are a lot of Mexican restaurants in Chattanooga). The street tacos are are my fav. I got the pastor and chicken. Soooo delicious! The verde sauce they serve with them is the best verde sauce I've ever had. The Salsa (and chips) has just enough heat but not too spicy. Came here for a 2 for 1 margarita and some beef tacos. The margarita is good and a good size for a happy hour drink. Ordered the Burrito Grande with Steak. Aye carumba it was HUGE with all the fixin's. Sour cream, guac, onions, beans, shredded lettuce and cheese sauce. I'm a big guy with a strong appetite. I could only handle half of it, though I did have some chips and tasty salsa before digging into the burrito. Highly recommend. read more

We are visiting from Virginia and were looking for a quick lunch and found this place. Due to the location we were cautious but are very happy we came in. I had chicken enchiladas and they were awesome, the chicken was very tender and the cheese sauce was excellent. We were met by a very kind young man who brought us chips and salsa immediately. So glad this restaurant was redone. Previously the prices were high for inconsistent food. Now the food is always yummy, the prices are reasonable for the portions, and the staff is all super friendly. They have 2 for 7.99 margs all the time. On happy hour I believe they are 2.99 a piece. read more

The food was ok and the service was good. What is most annoying was they brought our tickets, 2 groups, and a 15 percent tip was already added. I noticed this but the other party didn't. We paid with credit cards and the server kept the original receipt and gave us a credit card receipt to sign. On this, there was a place for a tip but nothing noted that a tip was already added. The other person added a tip, and then I asked if he had noticed a tip was already added. He had not. I find this to be deceptive and very unethical. A restaurant that allows this is probably not past other poor business practices and I would not trust to use quality ingredients either. The server would have gotten a larger tip if he had not pre added 15 percent, or at least told us about the pre added tip. I usually tip 20-25 percent, or even more for outstanding service. We will not go back. read more

It's about time we got a good Mexican restaurant! We dine here 2+ times per week. The street tacos are amazing - you won't be disappointed. The service is excellent. It looks just like it did when it was El Monterey but the difference in quality is 180°!!! They offer 2-for-1 margaritas after 3pm and they're quite nice. Try the mango! Overall this place deserves the 5 stars I'm giving because it's obvious from the owner to the server they WANT you to be there and are proud of their food. read more

This is by far the best Mexican food my husband and I have had! My husband grew up with authentic Mexican food and he loves this place! Now every Mexican food restaurant that we try seems to be disappointing...they just are not as good as this place. We have pretty much given up even finding one that is even equal to this one. It just can't be beat! The food the service and the atmosphere. All good! This place is highly recommend! read more

On that note, it is difficult to eat at times because the patty comes apart, I would ask for a fork and I'm sure you will receive. The restaurant has a wonderful ambiance, with plenty of room, music, and hand-painted furniture. We were greeted promptly and received our water, chips & salsa, and menus right away. The main problem that we saw here was that the management has decided that they "check all the boxes" for a general level of acceptable service, and as long as the customer accepts this unquestioningly, there's no need to go above or beyond. Stephen Covey advises: Seek first to understand, then to be understood. Our server seemed completely unprepared to act as an intermediary between the kitchen and management on one hand, and us (the customers) on the other. When we specified what we wanted, she went away for a long time, then came back, only to be told again what we were asking for. Some examples: Drink menu had no prices. We wanted a breakdown because we knew the drinks were oversized, and wanted to share a margarita. It took a couple of requests to get this. We had to reject the 2 oversized pitchers. Then, Instead of bringing us the oversized pitcher with 2 glasses, it was the oversized pitcher with one glass, so one person was drinking out of the pitcher through a straw, waiting for the other person to be ready for a refill of their glass. Awkward. Fortunately, the margarita was superb and (almost) worth the wait. But having to pour from a pitcher with no spout was messy, and of course we had to request extra napkins to clean up the mess. And of course the napkins took awhile to arrive. Might I add, it was a Thursday night and we were virtually the only patrons in the dining room. A good restaurant does not need to have the customers spell out complaints in a Yelp review. Again referencing Stephen Covey, "Be proactive." Anticipate likely requests such as prices on the menu, customers wanting to share a pitcher of drinks, extra salsa, extra napkins, dietary exceptions such as no beans. Chips & salsa: Come ON! Three adults, a modest bowl of chips, and one thimble-sized souffle cup of salsa? After which, when the entrees came, we had to ask for more? We were asking each other jokingly if there were tariffs on salsa that we hadn't heard about. Ordering directly off the menu with no deviations or substitutions was almost guaranteed to get us what we wanted. Still, the portions were heavy on rice, okay on the main dishes, and positively miserly on sauces, dressings, and condiments...the things that most restaurants provide without having to be asked. One member of our party ordered and very explicitly asked for no beans to be included with the carnitas. Sure enough, wall to wall beans, and my friend sent the whole plate back for de-beaning. Again, someone in charge was apparently thinking "Nonsense! Everybody likes beans. There must be some mistake. We'll just give them beans regardless, and they'll thank us for it." No. Give the customer what they asked for, the first time. All in all, we were hungry, and we were fed. But as per the above, there were problems. And when there are problems, communicated to the server, it's vital that the server come back shortly after delivering the food, to ask how everything is, and if there's anything else that might improve the experience. For example, some sour cream would have been nice on the tacos dorados. But the server stayed far away for the remainder of the meal, so there was no opportunity to requvisits. Tellingly, no other senior waitstaff or managers came by to inquire as to our level of satisfaction. They just didn't seem to care. El Meson has occupied their prime site in Chattanooga for many years and can be an enjoyable place to gather. But for smaller parties who know what they want, this restaurant needs to work harder and smarter to earn their respect and return vidits.
