    a plate of mexican food

So obviously Mexican is one of my favorites. This is Ok Mexican food, better than fast food but hey it is a sit down restaurant with great table service and although the food wasn't awesome it was good and even better for price. The colors, designs and furnishings give it that Mexican restaurant flair. Again I'm thing this is a restaurant still trying to serve you a good meal at a great price and maybe the cut backs show a little. It was good, not great but I would try again.

We wanted to find a place to eat off the beaten path of Hamilton Place for lunch after church on Sunday. Church crowds usually take everything over around noon. We found this place and it's conveniently located right next to a Publix. There were maybe three tables occupied when we got there. We were put in an area by ourselves; which is awesome because the silence gave us time to talk. I always order queso, and this was the best I've had in a long time! We ordered off the lunch menu, which is available everyday until 3pm. The lunch fajitas were half the price of dinner fajitas but it was about half the skillet size. Service was slow for not being very busy but overall it was a good experience!

The menu prices on their website are incredibly off... went in thinking that I was spending about 25-28 dollars and come out spending 39.48.... The guy said I'm sorry tho.... I guess that fixed everything... I asked for a half slice of avocado and he didn't tell me it was 3.99.... I guess that's on me, but seems shady af...I'm not sure what's going on here, but as a first timer... I won't be back

What's cool about Altena is that they have a Lunch buffet on the weekends from 11-3, for $8.99 adults. We just happened to find this place after wandering about trying to find a Mexican restaurant to satisfy my craving. Sadly we got here at like 240pm and the buffet was slim picking/dried up. Otherwise we would have most definitely tried that. They have options of fajitas which is awesome, chicken and steak, it looked like maybe burritos and enchiladas, rice, beans, a salad bar and all the fixings. Instead of the buffet we opted for the menu and ordered 2 beef burritos with extra sauce, and i had ordered one chicken and one beef burrito with a side of lettuce, rice and beans. I got 1 chicken enchilada and 1 chicken burrito. It was fine i didn't say anything because my fiancé had 2 beef so we just shared. Overall the food was decent, nothing stood out. The salsa wasn't my favorite but they had several different hot sauces on the table and when i added some to the salsa it made it better :) The salsa just needed more depth for me. I think I'll be back to try the buffet bar one day when the craving hits again bc for $8.99 you can't really beat it :)

We had our two young girls and they were very understanding and accommodating (high chair and coloring sheets). The menu is interesting but to be honest, we enjoyed almost none of our items. The cocktails were very meh. Not awful but not great. The food is really where this place lacks in my opinion. No one was a fan of almost any dish we got. The puffy tacos with redfish were likely the worst. Under seasoned and close to being gross. The catfish dish was so so. The fish itself was good but the grits were hard and the green tomatoes were so sour that they overpowered everything else. The ribs tried but I'd suggest going to a legit BBQ joint for real meats like this. The potatoes were greasy and mostly bland. I'd rank this our least favorite meal in the city. Interestingly enough. We were just at a Michelin star restaurant less than a week before and had the complete opposite experience.

Upon arrival, a friendly host found us comfortable booth seating behind the bar. The waitress not only answered our food allergy related questions pertaining to certain dish prep but the manager came over to our table to assure us that she would be double checking our order to make sure there was no allergen cross contamination. Such a kind, thoughtful gesture! Mom and I ordered the sampler to split - a huge tray filed with delish gluten free chips, a delish bowl salsa verde, a delish bowl of homemade guacamole, and a delish bowl of homemade cheese sauce. For my lunch, I got two of my favorite tacos on their menu still, the California Club ones, large tacos filled with roasted chicken, a tasty like crema, and avocado. Not as hungry as I, Mom got an Oy Vey Taco, another longstanding goodie, a brisket based taco, which she enjoyed. Our later than planned Wednesday lunch was perfect.

It took a while for a server to see us, but then it was fast to get our drinks as well as food once orders were placed. Tacos were alright, Cali club was messy & drippy. Homeboy was good but I don't think I'd get the spicy version again - not overly spice just overly sauced. The appetizer trio was good, but seemed expensive at $14. Overall the place is nice, but a little expensive for tacos.

The bathrooms are always clean, which I appreciate. Paid street parking is usually easy to find, though during busy hours it can take a little more time. The veggie fajitas are an absolute treat and full of flavor. The guacamole is fresh and perfectly seasoned, and the salsa is truly top notch. One of the most delightful surprises is that the churros are vegan, and they are unforgettable. The Papillón dish is especially meaningful. It can be made vegan and comes from the owner's grandmother's recipe in Guatemala. That personal touch really shines through and makes the menu feel inspired and unique. There used to be a young blonde male bartender who was hands down one of the best servers I have ever had. He was personable and somehow remembered both your order and your conversations even months later. That level of hospitality really stood out. Prices are not cheap, and the ingredients are not explicitly organic, but the quality, flavor, and thoughtful menu make it well worth it. Highly recommend if you are looking for consistently great food and a standout dining experience in Chattanooga.
