This location is closed. It moved to Hixson Pike in the Lake Site area (across from food city). First the good: the rice was good, the beer is cheap and cold, beautiful new restaurant, friendly wait staff, my wife's fajitas were flavorful (dry as a desert, but tasty) Now the bad: EVERYTHING ELSE! the burrito Colorado is quite possibly the worst dish I have ever had at a Mexican restaurant. The beef is a flavorless, mushy chunk beef. The Colorado sauce is more cinnamon than anything. The salsa is grainy and flavorless. The beans are like catfood. The wait staff is incredibly inattentive (my wife never got a water refill). Also if you get more than two baskets of chips and salsa they charge $1.99 for it (not that I want anymore chips and salsa). I'm a Texas girl so I know Mexican food. My Boyfriend and I were driving back to college and pulled over to refuel etc. literally by chance walked in and knew it was amazing. THE SERVICE 10/10. This location closed and reopened on Hixson Pike. Pics don't match what you get. Specifically the refried beans. See my pic. The beans were like a purée of chili beans and water. Like a sauce; Not refried beans at all. Couldn't eat them. I had enchiladas supreme and couldn't eat the bean or cheese enchiladas - terrible taste. The chicken for chimichanga and enchilada was good. There's plenty other Mexican restaurants around but likely not coming back to this one. read more

Wow...over a year ago this place was great. Good food, great service..so, wth happened? The last 3x we've been there in a couple months was absolutely aweful. The food quality has gone way down hill, what used to be fresh, is now tasting like it's been from a can, sitting out. I can go to the grocery store and eat right out of the can much better than that. When I ordered food, it was out in less than 5min which is actually pretty scary...the mixed drinks there too was just full of sugar and not much alcohol. The service is horrible, even when it was extremely slow. Almost walked out. In addition to make it worse I felt so bloated and practically stayed on the toilet all night this last time (and I've gotten the same exact food before). My fiancé and I stopped in for dinner this past Saturday. This was our first time visiting El Maguey. It's located in a small strip of stores off of Middle Valley Rd. The interior was very clean. We were promptly seated in a booth and introduced to what we would discover to be the greatest waiter we've ever encountered at any Mexican restraurant, Gabriel. Gabriel took our drink orders and had some chips and salsa sent our way. We opted for Coke Zero but they had a decent beer selection and bottled margaritas. (Because they're within a certain radius of a school and church in the heart of the Bible Belt, they have having difficulty getting a liquor permit) We were told about a special, Hawaiian Pineapple. It's a hollowed half pineapple filled with chicken, steak, shrimp, grilled onions/tomatoes/peppers, and warm pineapple. It comes with soft tortillas, beans, rice, guacamole, sour cream, and pico. It's enough food for three people, easily. All of that for only $11.99! Not only was the price fantastic, the food was great! The flavor was right there with every other Mexican restaurant you've been too, but when you couple that with the price, and fantastic service, we were quite pleased. Gabriel also told us about a sopapilla, four flat square doughs covered in cinnamon, sugar, and topped with a dollop of whipped cream surrounding a ball of strawberry ice cream topped with whipped cream and chocolate sauce. It was delightful! Overall, it was a great visit! I'd go back again without hesitation. If you don't absolutely have to have a mixed margarita at your meal, please give this place a try. read more

We ordered takeout from them before COVID. I ordered a shrimp dish and there were only 4 overcooked shrimps in the whole entree. My husband and son were not happy with their orders either. As much as I want to like this place the food is so greasy and lacking flavor . The chicken is the consistency of rubber and taste like it too . They chorizo is greasy as can be and has not heat to it . Every time that I have ate here which has been 3 times , mainly because my husband likes it I have gotten very sick to my stomach . This is an update because I'm so happy they've gotten even better since my last review. I visit Hixson often to see my family since my husband and I move around the country a lot. Right now we live in Denver...Denver has EXCELLENT Mexican food btw, so I'm a pretty good judge when it comes to Mexican restaurants. Now this place was great when it opened, but they've remodeled and expanded their menu and bar. Everything my husband and I have eaten has been delicious, plus the staff is both welcoming and attentive. Such a great place to unwind and have a yummy meal. It doesn't look like much from the outside, and the location is a bit discreet, but don't pass them up if you like Mexican food. You won't be disappointed at all. They're wonderful! read more

This is a great Mexican place! It is your typical Tennessee Mexican cuisine so it is definitely not the taqueria style. However, the food is delicious! The service is also great- the server that I have had both times I've been there is super nice and helpful. We were in town to do some shopping and just happened to pick El Maguey, and I'm so glad we did! Our waitress was AMAZING! She was very friendly, and joked with us the whole time. The restaurant was very clean and comfortable. There are tons of items on the menu, so everyone should be able to find something to eat! The food was amazing, I got the special dinner, it's even described on the menu as "a little bit of everything" and you can believe, it's more than enough food! The salsa is very good and if you get the cheese dip, trust me, you only need the small. We ordered the large as there were three of us, and we barely finished it. The price is well worth the food and experience here! As someone in a wheelchair, accessibility is a major thing for me, this restaurant has plenty of room inside for a wheelchair to get around. I highly reccomend this restaurant, and we will definitely be back when we are in Hixson again! read more

Bland BAD food!! Rude Waitress!!! Do not eat here!!! I asked for scrambled eggs for my huevos rancheros and they brought me runny sunny side up. I mentioned it to the waitress and said it wasn't too late to just take the eggs off and we would have to recook the meal. She started griping at me then let out a huge "how dare you" sigh. Then walked up to her manager and aggressively complained and practically shoved the plate into his hands. Then a few minutes later she locked eyes with me and gave me a nasty look. First visit on 3/25/18 was great. We were excited to return, and did so on 3/30. What happened on this visit was perhaps the most bizarre, frustrating, and appalling thing I have ever experienced at a restaurant, let alone as a customer of any business. I ordered Chili Colorado, which I have enjoyed countless times at other area restaurants over the years. It is typically beef in a red sauce, with rice and beans. Here is is offered with choice of chicken or beef, so I specified beef. It came out with pork. I tasted it, as did two other at my table. It was pork. I do not dislike pork, but it isn't what I ordered. I notified my server, who notified a man I assume was a manager, but what happened next was surreal. He stood by me at my table and argued that what I had was not pork, but a "different kind" of beef! He kept smiling and kinda shaking his head in a condescending way as if to say "sorry YOU don't get it"...He even escalated this by going to the kitchen and having a piece of pork cooked up to bring to me and show the difference. He brings this plain, cooked piece of pork out and I take some from my plate, cut both pieces open ad they are identical! I asked if he was still standing by his answer that what I had was beef and he did. I said I'd heard enough. By the way, I'm eating all this time - I was friendly, and told them it was still good and I would eat it but I was personally appalled that he never offered to simply "make it right" but instead argued and acted like I just wasn't getting it. They did take it off the bill, so I guess good there even though I never asked or implied that, I just wanted them to admit the mistake but they held their ground so I'll never be back simply because I can't eat at a place where the cook and/or manager do not know the difference between beef and pork. Not sure if the health department should be concerned about that or not, we'll see... read more
