El Nuevo is quickly becoming one of my favorite restaurants in Austin. Their service is always quick, i don't think I've ever waited longer than 10 minutes. All their servers are super nice and attentive, refilling drinks and salsa quick. Server Alex is particularly great! Their prices are very fair, i never pay more than $15-20 after tip. Growing up in the Rio Grande Valley spoiled me on Tex-Mex, primarily, brown enchilada gravy. I've eaten in Mexican restaurants in and around Austin for decades, and the only place that prepares proper enchilada gravy is Rosie's in Bee Cave. They also use correct American cheese. I saw a photo of an enchilada plate from El Nuevo Mexico. The gravy looked good and I could tell the cheese was also correct. I told my wife we needed to try it. We weren't disappointed. The enchiladas were great, and so was everything else on my plate. The side of guacamole was good. We will be going back even though it's a 50-minute drive one way. read more

A hidden gem! Came here for margaritas and appetizers and was pleasantly surprised to find it wasn't busy--just what we were looking for. The place is clean with plenty of seating, and we were greeted and seated right away. Our server was friendly and checked in often, which made the experience even better. We tried the mangonada rita and the botana, and both were delicious. The shrimp diablo stood out--it's so good I'd come back just for that. Definitely a go-to spot. I tried El Neuvo Mexico for the first time this weekend and was surprised at how great it was! I hadn't heard much about this restaurant but am glad I found this hidden gem! I'm from south Texas so I'm always looking for some Mexican food that isn't super "Tex Mexy" and actually reminds me of home. This place did not disappoint! I ordered the enchiladas with fajitas and my bf got the burrito with barbacoa and chipotle sauce. The fajitas were a little bit dry, but the overall combination of enchilada sauce, rice, and beans was so nostalgic to what I'd eat growing up that I'm more than okay with it! The service was great! They were friendly, attentive, and always made sure we were stuffed with chips and salsa. Lots of large groups of families were there and there was more than enough space to accommodate their parties. I really enjoyed my meal here and would definitely come back for a warm meal that reminds me of home. I would love to try their breakfast, margaritas, and desserts because it all looks great! read more

This restaurant is in the same plaza as my Buddhist community center, so we often come here to eat after meetings. On New Year's Day, we decided to eat there again. I wasn't feeling well, so I ordered the Tortilla Soup. It was the perfect choice for a soothing and healing meal. The small bowl was enough to satisfy my appetite and it contained a lot of delicious ingredients: corn on the cob (not typically included in tortilla soup, so this was a plus!), ample amounts of chicken, a large avocado wedge, cheese, and of course, tortilla strips. Topped with tasty cilantro, with a side of rice for the soup. The service is always good. They promptly bring drinks and chips and salsa. And they keep refilling the chips, so no one goes hungry! The atmosphere is friendly. A bonus for this trip was the large screen TV, perfect for viewing the UT game while eating. I highly recommend this restaurant. read more

My favorite Mexican restaurant! I love their enchiladas and the charro beans. Very flavorful. The margaritas are reasonably priced and delicious! Their salsa is tasty, but not too hot. The lunch specials are great and Happy Hour is a deal. Service is very prompt and attentive. We've never had to wait. I love the ambiance. It's tastefully done, but not overwhelming. Spacious areas and yet it still feels warm and comfortable. I definitely recommend El Nuevo. read more

I love Tex Mex food. When we go on a long trip without good Mexican food, I crave it when we get home. So it's the first meal we eat when we return home. Just discovered this place and we wanted to try it out and I was so pleased. Their lunch special prices are amazing for what you get. I ended up getting the chili cheese beef enchiladas with refried beans and rice and a chicken fajita Taco. Everything was absolutely delicious. The enchilada sauce was very tasty and well seasoned. Well. The chicken fajita taco was made with their own homemade tortillas and basically had the chicken fajita meat with grilled onions and some other condiments inside that just made it spectacular. This place bubbled up to the top of my Mexican food restaurant list here in Austin. If it wasn't lunch I would have had a margarita but I got a big day ahead of me so we're going to come back for that and some more food. read more

Great Tex-Mex in the north Austin area! We tried the shrimp enchiladas, chipotle chicken enchiladas, pollo poblano, and the steak. Everything was so flavorful and portions were large. Was a huge fan of their chips and salsa - couldn't stop eating it! Service was great with waiters constantly refilling our chips, salsa, and water before we even had to ask. Our family loves this place! Very good horchata (haven't had an issue with flavor or consistency) and their food is delicious! We love to come here on Tuesday (kids eat free after 3PM) for small family get togethers and have always had good service and delicious food! We were pleasantly surprised by the nice experience that we had here last night after hunting for a new Tex-Mex place to try out since we're experiencing a bit of burnout from our local haunts. El Nuevo Mexico is located in that nondescript complex where Anderson and Lamar merge, and the first thing that you notice when you come in here is that it's enormous inside. Lots of real estate here! We were quickly sat and provided with some good chips and respectable salsa. The frozen marg was definitely superior to what we were expecting, and the "rita" cocktail was strong and fruity. The queso our daughter took it upon herself to order is the standard gooey kind, but it wasn't runny, so we did appreciate that. Our mains were a bit more ho-hum. The black bean bowl was simply the list of ingredients and could have used a bit of a sauce to bring the whole thing together, but if you're looking for something mildly healthy, it's a good menu find. The barbacoa tacos had dry meat and really needed some acidity, so we ended up having to dump a lot of the salsa on them. Our daughter actually had a kids bean burrito that had a pretty impressive red sauce on it, so we kept stealing some off her plate for our own dishes. Perhaps we could have ordered better because we saw a fish dish come out of the kitchen that looked really good! Service is friendly and we liked the chill vibe, so while we're landing on three satisfied stars, we will say that this restaurant it better than most of its ilk, and we can see ourselves coming back at some point. read more

This is our main Mexican restaurant. The hot sauce is very spicy, very good. Enchiladas are great, though we always ask for the chipotle sauce, rather than chili sauce. Boracho beans, rice are good. I sometimes get the fish tacos; they're very good, with a good portion of fish. read more

Food is great, got the queso to go with my chips, amazingly thick. Then had the mole enchiladas, also very good, sucker for anywhere that has mole. Drinks are cheap especially for happy hour. $5 margaritas coming from LA is god sent. Staff is super attentive and friendly and this is pretty much the ONLY texmex I could find open on a Monday at all, or after 3pm which is insane to me. Definitely recommend it. read more

Clean eating area, music is at a level that you can have a normal conversation. Staff works together by keeping our drinks filled and checking on us. The food was fantastic and we will are definitely coming back even though we live in Georgetown. read more

(Clean bathroom)Not much for decorum but, we're not here for the tchotchkes. Our server was pleasant and attentive.My wife ordered a mixed drink and I had the sweet tea. For lunch she had the beef burrito w/ rice and I had the Beef Enchiladas w/ rice & beans. My enchiladas were good and the beef was flavored well, my refried beans could have been seasoned a little more. I like a little smoky, pork, ancho notes in my beans. This has become our staple Mexican food joint in the north Austin area. Unfortunately there are not many near authentic places beyond the downtown and Lamar areas other than taco food trucks and this restaurant never disappoints us . Our usual is the Chile Relleno, verde enchiladas and tacos. The chips are usually warm and fresh and the salsa hits the spot every time . Their margaritas are good and strong, especially the top shelf ones . The chipotle sauce is smoky, had the right spice and always cooked well. Came here for dinner and enjoyed the food. We ordered cheese enchiladas and ground beef tacos. The tacos are huuuge. I think it hits the spot for trashy tex mex food. The margaritas had a great and balanced flavor. We ordered sopapillas, not sure how traditional they were made but they tasted good. We really liked the salsa, tasted fresh and spicyyyy. The tortillas are apparently homemade, they seemed fresh. Waitress was friendly and checked in on us a couple times. Tables are distanced. It is brightly lit inside, sometimes when you're at a restaurant it feels like you're in a cave. I wouldn't say there is much in the way of atmosphere but that's not a deterrent to me. I had an enchilada combo plate and hubby had enchiladas + tamale. First plate taco was huge! Excellent chili sauce on the enchiladas. Right proper amount of chili powder, cumin and ancho plus spices. I came here for breakfast and had the chilaquiles plate with salsa verde. Chilaquiles are crispy tortilla chips covered in spicy green sauce, topped with queso fresco and sour cream. The plate also came with two eggs (I asked for mine sunny side up), refried beans and breakfast potatoes on the side. The beans had a weird taste, but the chilaquiles were spot on. Love this restaurant. The enchiladas I've had here are amongst the best I've ever had in Austin. Burritos are really good here as well. Chips and salsa included for free which is an added plus.
