La Mancha is a north Austin classic. Been coming here for years and it's awesome. The staff are sooooo great. The booths are super comfy and you always start with chips and salsa followed with a spicy strawberry margarita!!! The restaurant is super well laid out and always clean. The atmosphere is friendly local with an amazing patio for those cool Austin nights. We usually have tacos and black beans followed by some of the best sopapillas. I am a picky eater and always order special tacos and such. I am hoping one day they name my plate "The Mayo". We will see lol!! read more

Tried out La Mancha with the fam (party of 7) on our last visit to Austin. Minimal wait, 10-15min maybe. We ordered an appetizer but unfortunately it kept be forgotten after multiple asks. We finally got it after our entrees were set down. The waiter did rectify it and took it off our bill. My chicken caldo had good flavor and lots of vegetables. A few of larger chunks of squash/zucchini were slightly undercooked, but not a big deal. It's also served with a cup of rice, decent could have used a little more flavor/seasoning. But that's a me thing when you get homemade rice on the reg. Everyone else seemed to like their food. Sopapillas were good but could have used more honey. Decent food, mid service. Good for groups. We came here after the library as it was right across the street, just for some drinks and queso. Give our thoughts on both the library and the recent news of the Yogurt Shop Murders being solved. The staff was very nice and attentive, the manager was even making rounds to see how everyone was and asked about the Mexican Candy Shot we ordered which was good. The staff is the biggest plus here. Now the part that explains the 3 stars. Beyond the Mexican Rock Candy shot the drinks were not great, pretty weak and not flavorful. I got a Frozen Top Shelf margarita and Shana got The Perfect Margarita, and as she puts it, it wasn't perfect! We order the queso with beef which only came in one size, they did let us have the extra stuff on the side which was great and the queso and chips were okay. Not the best but not bad, the chips were pretty solid. All that being said. One appetizer, two shots and two disappointing drinks came out to over $60 bucks. I am glad we didn't eat there as who knows what that would have cost. The best thing was the small shot, I am not against paying more for good food and drinks but paying a full meal price for mediocre drinks and okay queso was a shock. The service and how friendly the staff was gave this some bonus stars but we won't be back. The food we had and the drinks being so underwhelming doesn't make us want to come spend that kind of money on the food. read more

There was a group of elementary aged kids that kept coming up to all the tables, blowing out candles and basically just ignoring any sort of personal space boundaries. Not sure where their parents were but there were several interactions. Not sure what the staff should've done, but they didn't do anything (I get they don't want to get yelled at by parents). Something to keep in mind in case they're regulars. The food was great! Perfect Tex Mex. We came here after a disappointing experience at Curra's--and we're so glad we did! Genevieve took care of us and was incredibly friendly, patient, and helpful while we looked over the menu. Her great service truly turned our night around. The portions here are generous, and the food came out quickly. I had the grilled fish tacos, which were fresh and flavorful, and my husband ordered El Número Dos combo--he loved it. The Mexican martini was a highlight: strong, full of olives, and only $6 on Thursdays. It even comes with the shaker, so you're definitely getting your money's worth! Old school Tex-Mex for old school Texan Anglos. The customer base and menu is similar to what you would find at an El Mercado. The kitchen is not wonderful but not terrible. If I am going for Mexican in Rosedale or Allandale, I prefer Cheko's or La Cocina de Consuelo. If I am not going upscale but staying within Austin city limits, El Segredo de Abuela on Airport is my go-to. If I am going farther afield, Guadalajara in Elgin or the string of Mexican food trucks on 812 in Del Valle are completely worth the drive. But La Mancha is pleasant enough for what it is. * * * The two big plusses are the room and the people. The room has industrial quantities of Mexican cut paper hangings and tons of old movie posters. There is a travel poster of a real Mexican bullfight. Even if this is Mexican decoration for Anglos, it still looks cool and is well done. * * * The staff are absolutely positively top notch. This is some of the best service I have gotten in ANY restaurant in Austin including places that charge you a triple-digit-tab. The waitstaff is sweet and friendly and anticipate virtually any need you could possibly have. If this is a place you would go all the time, You could count on having "family" at La Mancha. * * * There are hundreds of wonderful Mexican restaurants in the Austin Metro Area. I am so sad to write this review because my husband and I have come to this restaurant for so long. Our family spends close to $400 per month here brunching over the weekend and today the new male manager and a female co-Manager were so distasteful and unaccommodating that we regret to say we will never be returning business here again. We tried to order a combo plate today that was about $19. Instead of a beef enchilada we tried to order a cheese enchilada instead. The waiter said no substitutions. If we wanted a cheese enchilada we would have to order an extra one a la carte. I'm not one to waste food and it seems silly to pay extra for a small substitutions. The restaurants was barely busy and it seemed absurd and unaccommodating that they declined to fulfill a small request like this especially for long time regulars. The manager pointed to an area on the menu that says no substitutions and said he would not override the policy. I refuse to spend money at places that don't appreciate my business. It should never be a restaurant policy to not allow substitutions. They should be excited to have our business and grateful for it not standing firm on policies for mere convenience. I have finally found Tex-Mex in Texas, sat at the bar and Amriss was extremely helpfully and made recommendations though-out. I had the Corona-Rita with their unreal chips and salsa and ordered the Mexican Street Corn app. I do wish it was on the cob but the flavor was spot on. Amriss made several recommendations and I settled on the El Numero Dos Combo Plate which was exactly what I was looking for. I made sure to save some salsa for my enchiladas to add a kick. What a great neighborhood joint, not my hood but I'm certain we will be back. Right off the bat the chips and salsa were a great surprise. The chips are not your HEB thin chips but solid enough to handle queso and their surprisingly spicy salsa. My eyes spied barbacoa enchiladas on the menu and that was that. This is the real deal, unlike the dried-out non-spiced "barbacoa" you sometimes get at other Tex-Mex joints. Be aware you can order 2 or 3 enchiladas unless you are a big eater or want leftovers two should suffice. The accompanying beans and rice were also a hit. The rice has some spice to it. My dining companions ordered beef tacos and combo plates and we all ate our full and took home a hearty snack for later. Service was excellent from start to finish. We asked for a table to watch the UT hoop game and the host moved us twice so we had primo seats by their big screen TVs. Our server was awesome and we never lacked water or additional chips. There is a large patio that is dog-friendly, a bar area, and a few additional seating sections. There are TVs everywhere if you wish to catch a game and parking in their large lot is a breeze. Having been here twice and married to a Latina, the food is just ok. Where they shine is in the service and with their killer cocktails. The food is a solid 4/5, but I'm also a little picky about anything remotely Mexican. The drinks are not authentic Mexican, but they are certainly tasty, so I can forgive them. The thing that pushed them to 5 stars for me was the service and my below tip, which I didn't know about the first time I visited, and can't imagine going again without it. This is a late review from a couple weeks ago, but no, we haven't forgotten every detail about how awful it was. When we decided to come here, we remembered fondly that it was one of the first places that we had come with our daughter because of its patio and remember it being more of a three-star experience. Um, no, we rightfully clocked it at 2 stars. What this place has going for it is one thing and one thing only: real estate. It's huge. We were immediately sat inside at a booth and were into the retro old Austin Tex Mex vibe, but then our margaritas and queso came out and both were stupendously bad. A cloying mix on the marg, and the Firehouse No. 12 queso was canned beef with a few browned slices of avocado swimming in unappetizing queso. Blegh. The worst part of the meal was one of our dishes, the Caldo de Pollo soup. Never did we think we'd be praising the virtues of our beloved local Julio's culinary prowess, but they look like The French Laundry compared to the bowl of water with random flotsam that we got from La Mancha: it was like a tiny cup of flavorless "broth" with just a bunch of rando unseasoned ingredient poking out from the surface. So, so bad. The El Numero Tres combo plate shined in comparison, but it's not like we have nice things to say about it. Just more packaged soulless slop. Our daughter's quesadilla plate was also the saddest sight ever: microwaved cheese on a tortilla with some rice and that's all, folks! We will try never to return here again if we can help it. What a shame that a place this close with so much potential is so bad. Two stars. Go to Billy's down the block, which is superior in every way possible. read more

Hit La Mancha as a second choice Sunday evening trip when our first choice turned out to be slammed. It's a medium sized venue with okay parking and a weird layout (if you haven't been there before). Service is prompt and very credible. The wait staff were all eager to please and expeditious. The decor, though, is uninspired and somewhat cliche. The menu is as extensive as you'll come to expect from a Central Texas Mexican food restaurant. A plethora of choices. The execution was pretty mundane, however. My al pastor tacos were average and unmemorable. My partner's enchiladas were equally blah. I can't point to any aspect of the food that was worth remarking on. Yummmmmy! We were heading to another restaurant that ended up being closed, so we landed at La Mancha. Boy were we glad. We pulled in and I thought "super cute". Cute doesn't always mean good, but in this situation it was a perfect reflection of the amazing cuisine we walked into. My sister and I were struggling to decide on a dish, so we decided to share two dishes. We ordered the caldo and the breakfast taco plate. I still haven't eaten my taco because I am so full from the DELICIOUS bowl of caldo that we had. It was so full of veggies and chicken that every bite was bursting with flavor.
