I actually liked this neighborhood Mexican joint. I quickly looked at other reviews saying it was bland but i beg to differ on that point. I thought the food here was very transparent without being over-seasoned and heavy. I ordered the Thursday lunch special which was perfect as it came with a bowl of chicken tortilla soup and choice of taco. I got the crispy beef taco for my choice of taco which was very delicious. The chicken tortilla soup had a very clear soup and just enough flavoring as not to overpower the chicken and vegetables. I left without feeling heavy but very nourished. Come here to get chilaquiles and online recommdation said everything is house made. But the plate is kinda small. Charge extra for chicken and egg and there were barely any chicken on it. I ordered chilaquiles, not beans and potatoes. Chips and salsa should be main components on the plate. Look at my picture. They make their own tortillas which is nice. It is a little bit chewy like Yemeni bread. But I think the plate should be bigger for $18 read more

5 stars ACROSS THE BOARD!! We called our order in like 10 minutes before they closed and they were so sweet to take our order. The restaurant is so cute and is an old house turned into a restaurant. The main lady who took our order and served us was so nice and even added another order on that we forgot even thought they were 5 minutes from closing. The food was amazing, especially the fish tacos and the shredded chicken tacos. If you add avocado, they are very generous with the amount. The food was absolutely amazing and extremely authentic. Every time I come here I feel like I love it even more. Today I tried the queso fresco enchiladas in ancho chile sauce. These aren't your run of the mill Tex-Mex enchiladas filled with generic cheddar cheese. These are legit enchiladas; hearty corn tortillas filled with queso fresco and simmered/covered in the most unbelievably tasty ancho chile sauce that's deeply flavored. I've yet to have anything like it in Austin. These might be my new favorite thing here, and I haven't even been for breakfast yet. One of my favorite places to eat in town now. Excellent and friendly service. This is a small spot that is refreshing in its homeyness. Stopped in for breakfast. I had the huevos rancheros which is accompanied by beans, potatoes, and your choice of flour or corn tortillas. The eggs and beans were delicious. The potatoes were sliced into sticks and were oddly pale and limp (similar to a boiled potato). I would ask for them to be cooked well and crisped if possible-- other photos show char but mine had none. Not a deal-breaker by any means, as everything else was very tasty. Just an update, they no longer make the very wonderful flan in house, so as it is different and I have not tried it. They are open evenings again! Yay! And want to add the style of Mexican food is not typical Tex Mex, but has elements of interior Mexico, similar to offerings at Fonda San Miguel only in a smaller place and with smaller prices ;). FSM still has their unique dishes, and love to go there, but Consuelo's is more of an affordable choice for family dining and the quality and flavor is excellent! A super value, and of course the warm friendly service with a smile. Also - they do not offer alcoholic beverage, but feel free to bring your own and they will accommodate you with appropriate glasses and bottle openers. Cocina de Consuelo's is still a top favorite in the Rosedale neighborhood. read more

Fantastic neighborhood gem in the Rosedale area. Hands down, some of the most authentic Mexican food in Austin. Delicacies like machacado con huevo and fideo are hard to find in Austin and theirs is delicious. And, the fresh corn tortillas are the best! Love this place. read more

Nice little space, services was good and the food was nothing out of the ordinary/traditional but some downside for me was that the nopalitos salad tasted like caned and the sopita de fideo was made with pasta like angel hair I believed so it give it a different taste than grandmas one on the other side the stake tacos were cooked to perfection very crispy and I'm not a fan of black beans but this do tasted like frijoles de hoya my daughter is very picky with barbacoa and she said this one is on her top list cause is not fatty. The cheese enchiladas are the perfect kind of cheesy. Perfectly melted and mild and almost melts in your mouth. Add a bit of salsa on for that perfect kick. The potato enchiladas are also very good with the chipotle sauce although I wish it had just a little more sauce. The restaurant is very charming like eating at your abuela's casa. No frills just smiles. They don't serve alcohol here so be ready to drink Mexican coke! Update: they are BYOB so the coke is going to be replaced by a six pack! read more

Small place. Cute decor. Super sweet service on 4th of July when my son wanted tacos and this was the only place open near us. Ordered a lunch special- Flautas with Mexican rice and Fideo, Tostada Plate with Mexican rice and refried beans and a Chicken Tortilla Soup and 1 Taco Combo for the kid. Total price with tax and tips was $34 which translates to a little over $11 per person. Food is made fresh so there's a wait and it looked really good. Once we actually dug in, we were surprised by how bland and underwhelming the flavors were. It was really disappointing considering everything else, including the quality of ingredients were top notch. To briefly go through the items: Flautas - super bland and the chicken was kinda stinky Mexican rice - good and flavorful Fideo - first time trying and i really liked this dish Refried beans - basic, not my favorite Chicken Tortilla Soup - kid didn't like it so I had it. It was pretty good Taco - super basic and boring. Can't believe soup and one taco is like 12 dollars. Lowlight of the meal. Tostada - the round fried tortilla was really good. But it needed something to make it stand out as the dish as a whole was super bland. So I'm sad to say, despite the friendly and warm service, the food just didn't do it for us. read more

The story of this lovely restaurant, La Cocina de Consuelo, is told in beautiful detail on their website, and today I had the opportunity to talk with Mahali, who told me about her Tia Letty and Tia Connie. "Tia Connie (Rodriguez) founded the restaurant in 2006, and in 2019 she started passing it over to Tia Letty (Garcia). Tia Letty passed away this past February in 2023 so it's just us now. We try to keep the recipes the same to carry on her traditions." The food is excellent, and the hand made tortillas, sheer perfection. Come for the breakfast burrito, and return for the lunch special -- don't miss the mango and jicama salad -- and take some tortillas and salsa home so you don't have to wait till your next visit! Came here on a Sunday around noon with my boyfriend, didn't seem terribly busy which we were happy about. Got in line and ordered at the front (told us next time we can take a seat and they will serve us ) Ordered two tortilla soup and taco combos with the beef tacos. Also ordered the tacos al pastor with fideo. Also lemonade. Oh and the tres leches cake and flan. Everything came out super speedy and everyone working was so nice. Once we began eating the delicious and flavorful food, it started to get a little busy. The employees and Letty! Handled the rush very well and were still attentive to everybody. Good thing we came on a cloudy cooler day bc the soup and fideo slapped! Warmed me from the inside out and made me feel so cozy. The al pastor was well seasoned. The flan (sourced locally from Algo Dulce) was sooo creamy and lightly sweet. The tres leches was moist from the creamy sauce but still fluffy yet dense. I am updating my review from four years ago and adding a star. Cucina de Consuelo has been consistently excellent. Thank goodness it made it through the pandemic. Migas, huevos rancheros, burritos, everything is always solidly good and delicious. It's become a go to place for a couple of friends and myself. The back porch is always nice to sit on. There's a friendly vibe and I'm really glad they've added Horchata to their menu. I'll give it a star just for how happy it makes me to walk in the door. A star for the friendliness? A star for the food. A star for the relaxed ambience. I'll even give it a star for not having Wi-Fi and keeping your attention on the food and present Company. There's parking in the back which makes things a lot easier. I only hope this review doesn't make it so crowded that I can't get in anymore. read more

Some of the best queso in Austin, hands down. * * * La Cocina de Consuelo is in Rosedale. You normally think "real deal" Mexican restaurants have to be on the East Side, or in Del Valle, right? Mexicans are all poor right? And if they are rich, they can't cook because their household staff does all the cooking for them, right? Wrong, wrong and wrong again. * * * La Cocina de Consuelo is an outstanding Mexican restaurant, founded by a rich woman. Her family was well enough connected in Mexico, that when she came to the United States, people were able to introduce her to the Bush family. She adores cooking. She cooked for the Bushes. Her dream was to have a restaurant. Her income was secure enough that she did not have to settle for a trailer by the side of Highway 812. She bought a beautiful cottage on Burnet in Rosedale. She decorated it tastefully and well. The place looks a lot like the way Pasha did before it closed. She put in a team of excellent people to execute her recipes. And that team makes food to die for. * * * La Cocina de Consuelo is small. There are maybe eight tables in there, tops. In its early days, it had no tables and was all take out. Now a handful of people can eat there at a time. Not unlike the fancy omakase restaurants you can find over on the East Side where you sign up a year in advance. At least at La Cocina, you can just walk in. * * * The clientele is about 3/4 Mexican. I and one other professorial looking Rosedale couple were the only Anglo tables in the place. The Mexican clientele ranged from lower upper class to middle class to upper lower class. There were two plumbers from Lago Vista. There were two tables of what looked like office workers or social workers from the nearby State of Texas Government Complex. Another person was wearing sleeveless outdoor gear with absolutely clean unsullied clothes. A site supervisor? There were some business people too. * * * My queso was absolutely memorable ... a destination dish. This was the variety with chorizo. This was firey but not unpleasantly spicy, Savory and complicated with flavors that changed around the bowl, Rich and filling without invoking cheese overkill. I absolutely inhaled my bowl. * * * The menu is small. The house is small. The flavor is big. Check this place out. Why should you let the Bush family have all the fun? read more

Sometimes the simplest things are best. The lunch special was chicken mole, served with a side of rice, beans or a mango jicama salad (I chose the first and last) at this small but very charming spot. Mole is one of those dishes that when done well will have you thinking about it all day. The mole here was just like that. Three juicy hunks of chicken, steam-cooked and slathered in this immensely rich and flavorful sauce. The flavor was closest to poblano than negro, and it was mildly spicy. The companion of the deep red flavor was this thick mole that had all sorts of notes (guajillo, cascabel) -- I felt warm but also nostalgic and thought about the last time I had such a pleasing mole. I had the delicate rice with the fresh fruit salad (which also has this crisp pico de gallo, tiny leaves of finely minced cilantro). Needed a little more acid and seasoning but it really worked well here. The limonada agua fresca hit the spot too, as did their somewhat delicate flour tortillas. I'll only quibble with the inconsistent service. One moment the young server, looking Inexperienced, forgot my tableware as I was being served. Two minutes later I overheard the next table ask for their knife and fork too. read more

Breakfast this morning. Small place right on Burnet -- parking in front is dangerous because you have to back out onto busy Burnet Road. No food aroma in the restaurant. You have to order at the counter -- we aren't a fan of that. I ordered a migas burrito ($6.50); my husband ordered the machacado burrito ($7.00). The food was not even average -- without the salsa (which was tasty), the food was flat. And there was very little machacado in the burrito -- and no cheese. Their homemade tortillas weren't anything special --- big and chewy. Again, no taste. On a positive note, the place seemed clean. But with so many Mexican restaurants in Austin, we won't return here. read more
