What a disappointment! Who puts American cheese in a quesadilla? I'll tell you--Amaya's! I remember coming to Amaya's when they were in a strip center and don't have any bad memories, so we decided to check them out at this different location. But starting with that American cheese quesadilla did not bode well for the experience (which, by the way, they do not advertise that the quesadilla comes with American cheese, rather than something every other Tex Mex restaurant would use). The tacos were crazy disappointing too. I can appreciate that they make their own tortillas, but the tortillas on our tacos were so thick they overpowered the tacos and were too much to bite through. I was a loyal customer at your South Austin location and dined there weekly, so I was truly disappointed when it closed. This past weekend, a group of us decided to visit your North location, hoping for the same great experience--but unfortunately, it was extremely disappointing from start to finish. Service was poor throughout the evening. Our server forgot drinks, brought incorrect orders, and never followed up. Two people in our group ordered margaritas that had a strong plastic taste and were undrinkable. She neither offered to replace them nor removed them from the bill. I ordered a Mexican martini, and when I went to pour it, the lid flew off and spilled everywhere. We asked for napkins or a towel, which never came, and we ultimately had to find napkins ourselves. Several non-alcoholic drinks we ordered never arrived, yet they were still included on the check. The food was equally disappointing. It was bland, tasted old, and seemed poorly prepared. The enchilada sauce was watery and flavorless, and the taco meat was cold and tasted as though it had been sitting out. It was surprising and disheartening to see such a drop in quality compared to what I used to experience regularly. The restaurant was nearly empty at 6 p.m. on a Saturday, which in hindsight should have been a warning sign. Most likely you will never have to wait to go here since there is so many space. This restaurant is closing in on 700 reviews and you will find it on the southbound feeder of I35 just before the 38th St. exit. When viewed from the street, the restaurant looks a lot smaller than it actually is. If you come at a busy time, they do have an overflow area to sit at and they will hand you a buzzer to let you know when you are to be seated. There's tons of seating here so they can accommodate large groups. I came here with a group of 18 people for lunch and they were able to seat us all together (we made a reservation). This place is super popular and there can easily be about 100 people inside for lunch. This is a business that has been around for over 40 years and at this location since 2011. One metric I gauge how good Tex-Mex is, is how good or bad or chips and salsa are. I really like their salsa because it is served chilled, but you can feel the heat by the first bite. Chips are good, but pretty average. Our waitress kept the chips and salsa full and dropped off plenty of napkins. The one thing that became apparently obvious when all the entres were being dropped off, was that it is quite clear you get a lot on the plate for your money. Normally, TexMex gets an acceptable three star rating from me and the refried beans and rice here are nothing special. However, the service, price and food bumps it to 4 stars. The wait for our food was on the long side the one person had to wait an additional 3-5 minutes. I had the Deluxe which is an incredible amount of food. The taco shell was not crunchy-more like tough and hard to tear through. The guacamole on the chalupa was acidic and tasteless. I used to come here with friends every Thursday. This was my first visit to Amaya's after asking for a recommendation for Mexican food. I am from South Texas so I'm used to really good Mexican food. The service is quick, with plenty of staff and the decor is what you'd expect. They serve Coke products here and the portions are plentiful on each plate. I had the chicken enchiladas but they weren't the best in flavor. The tortillas are thin. I can see why people would like it here and I'll be coming back to try breakfast and give it another shot. My 1st time here and met up with a friend for lunch. We arrived later than we wanted (noon) and the parking lot was full. I made the loop around twice looking for something closer to the door since handicap were all taken. I have mobility issues and didn't want a long walk. Although I fought it, my colleagues chose to meet here during lunch hours. I was frantic as I've had two previous experiences that were lackluster. First of all, I have to give props to the wait staff who get you in and out very smoothly. I think this type of service is unmatched at a lot of similar establishments in Austin. Our drinks were always refilled and we were checked on periodically in a noninvasive way. More tortillas are offered and so are condiments throughout the dining experience. However, the menu is an absolute mess. The only clarity is on the lunch menu. Not only is it hard to navigate the menu but the pricing of things as benign as a taco plate will run you around fifteen bucks. Forget the affordability of a specialty plate like enchiladas or stuffed poblanos. I got the Wednesday special, a grilled chicken breast covered in ranchero sauce with rice and beans and two tortillas. It was a smidge over thirteen bucks and, while the portion was big, the flavor was lacking and I found it hard to stomach. The salsa was perfectly spicy but the majority of my table of 9 couldn't handle it. The chips were wasted and everyone was irritable until their main dish arrived. Super cute place. It was very lively on a Tuesday for lunch. Our group of 10 was seated pretty quickly. Our waitress was very attentive and caring. Our chips and salsa was refilled very quickly. I have eaten at the place for years and today was not a good day for Amaya's Taco Village. I had three village tacos, and my Mom had the same. The corn tortillas were as tough as shoe leather. It was impossible for my mom to eat them. The waitress took 20% off the bill, but that is not fixing the problem. Your manager needs to check the corn taco shell and it they are not fresher they should be thrown out. I chocked mine down, but they were the most embarrassing taco shells I have ever eaten. What has me not wanting to not return is the service we had and the "tip suggestions" on the iPad you pay your bill on. Shame on you Amayas for boldly suggesting that your customers want to pay a 22%, 25%, 20% tip. In this order. For subpar service. In small letters you can choose a different amount. My wife and I were looking for a place to have a small memorial service for our daughter. She called and spoke to Geronimo, the manager. He was so kind, considerate and very accommodating once he heard of what we needed. He said he would take care of us. We had close to 30 ppl show up, with each party paying for their meals. We only waited 5 min, were seated and from there everything was smooth sailing. We were able to enjoy our family and friends while partaking of some awesome food. Prices have increased across the board so I got their daily special the fish which at $13 wasn't too bad. But other items where at least $15-18 kind of steep for old school Tex-mex food. I think they are kind of light handed in the seasoning so not very mex at all. The fish I got was on a bed of charred corn but it really didn't add to the dish. Since I was trying not to get brain freeze I got a margarita on the rocks, not as strong as their frozen.
