I had Peruvian food for the first time at El Mono with my family. We were very impressed by the flavor and the friendly staff. We ordered yucca fries, lomo saltado, arroz con pollo, and chupe de camarones. The chupe de camarones was our favorite. This is a creamy shrimp chowder that was rich and comforting and it was perfect with the rice. The yucca fries were also delicious I just wish there was more! The restaurant is nice and clean and the staff was very friendly. I can't wait to go back to to try more seafood dishes! read more

First time trying El Mono. Some of the dishes were good, while others were okay. I came with friends and I got to try a few dishes. There is a parking lot at the restaurant which is very convenient. The staff is friendly and attentive. Now for the food: -My favorite dish was the Yuca Frita 5/5: these were delicious! Not oily and just right. The dish came with a delightful chili aioli sauce. -Lomo Saltado 4/5: This was my dish. It came with rice, fries and angus steak cooked in a tomato sauce. The sauce was very flavorful, and the fries were crunchy. However, this dish tasted more like steak with tomatoes; still tasty, just different from what I've had at other places. I could choose between a soup or salad to go with the dish and I chose the soup. It was delicious! -Ceviche 3/5: this was ok. It was a bit bland, and it needed more lemon. -Tallarin Verde con Pollo 4/5: My friend had this dish, and it was good but very dense. The noodles came with a green sauce and chicken, using the same tomato sauce as my dish. It came in a large skillet, so this is perfect for sharing or taking some home. I would order this. It was good! -Drinks: we had a Maracuya 3/5, this would have been delicious if it wasn't too sweet. I had to add a bit of water to dilute the drink. Chicha 3/5, same as the other drink. It has a good flavor but it is too sweet. Overall, I had some good dishes here and tasted some ok ones. If I come back, I would try the tallarines. I wouldn't go out of my way to come here but if I am craving some of the dishes, I would still give it a try. read more

We were visiting from Los Angeles and decided to stop here on our way to the Redwoods. I was especially excited because my boyfriend had never tried Peruvian food before and as someone who loves it, I was really looking forward to introducing him to the flavors. If I'm being honest, the experience didn't quite blow me away. The food was okay, but not something I'd go out of my way to return for. The portion sizes were fair and everything we tried was fine, but it just lacked that "wow" factor I usually associate with Peruvian cuisine. Service was also just okay not bad at all, and I want to acknowledge that the staff were very polite, but it didn't feel particularly warm or memorable either. Definitely not the worst but nothing that stood out. All in all, I'm still glad we stopped by and gave it a try, but for me personally, it wouldn't be a must-stop next time. That said, it might still be a nice option if you're craving something different while passing through. read more

i love lomo saltado so i decided to stop by el mono, and I have no regrets! The lomo saltado was perfectly flavorful and balanced, especially with the addition of the green sauce! El Mono has quickly become not just one of my favorite Peruvian restaurants in the Bay, but one of my favorite restaurants period. I've been back 3 times in a month because it's that delicious. My favorite dishes are the lomo saltado, seafood paella, and tarallin verde de pollo, as well as their ceviche appetizer. The freshness of the ingredients makes every dish so flavorful-- you can tell they put their heart into it. All of the staff are super lovely too-- Christian is a wonderful waiter, and I love that the restaurant is family owned. I'll definitely keep coming back! Let me tell you why: - Easy to find location with lots of parking! - Cute ambiance and cool outside seating area - Classic menu w/ unique specials My wife and I ordered Jalea, mariscos saltado, and Antonio's pescado al achiote. All were portioned well. Jalea was crispyyyyyy and had a great mix of everything. We also really liked the cortido that went with it. The sauces for both the saltado and pescado al achiote were perfectly seasoned and tasty. Service was great too, Matt was very helpful and helped us navigate the menu. Visited El Mono for the first time tonight, and it was some of the best Peruvian food I've ever had. My friends and I had the lomo saltado, trio del mar, paella, and lamb. The meat was so tender and perfectly seasoned. All of the seafood was incredibly satisfying. In addition to the food, the ambience was great. I had driven by El Mono several times on my way to dance class in the morning and wanted to return for dinner. Last night was that night, and it was very nice experience. From the moment we walked in, we were welcomed and greeted by Christian, who was our server. He was attentive and friendly. The food was delicious. We started off with the fried plantains and moved to our entrees- chupe de camarones and the "poor man's steak" for my husband. My creamy shrimp stew was served with rice and perfectly poached egg on top. My husband's steak dish was nicely prepared with rice, fried yucca, and a fried egg. There's plenty of parking, and it's in a quiet neighborhood right off the freeway on Gilman. We will be back again! read more

Service - went on a Friday night without a reservation and got seated at the bar, which is fair. Sat for 20 min and nobody came to take our order. After the order we placed, waited another 30 min for the food to come out. Food - probably the worst peruvian food I've had. Brunch time at El Mono was interesting to say the least. My girlfriend and J were the youngest people in the restaurant by at least 30 years which isn't an issue but for a hip spot it just wasn't expected lol. The side door of the restaurant remained open for the entire time which made it almost unbearable to sit and eat while freezing cold lol I literally had goosebumps. The food however was pretty good. My wife and I celebrated our anniversary yesterday and honestly had a perfect meal at El Mono. Every aspect was superb: the decor, attentiveness of management (Matt rocks!), ease of ordering, and of course, superb food with authentic ingredients. What truly made this visit unforgettable, though, was the kindness from the staff and manager. I noticed a small plant sitting off to the side that caught my attention. It reminded me so much of my mother, who recently passed and was a huge plant lover. Since losing her, caring for plants has become something deeply therapeutic for me. I jokingly offered to buy the plant, and instead, the manager kindly gifted it to me. That simple act of compassion meant more than they will probably ever know. On a day that can feel heavy while grieving a mother, they gave me a little piece of comfort to take home. Beautiful restaurant, beautiful people, and a kindness I won't forget. It has an amazing waterfront/courtside view of the Bay, dock access to a ferry (I think it's Hornblower?), and a lot of natural light and open space. They also have a new chef and friendly staff. My homegirl and I started with the Green Curry Mussels, and they were definitely flexing like Mr Olympia. The curry broth was the star -- 10/10. We dipped everything in it: bread, fries...hell, it would have made tree bark taste good. I had the fish and chips, and the cod was perfectly battered like an amateur boxer in his first pro fight. Crispy, golden, and lightweight. My homegirl's cioppino was a little too tomato-heavy, so the waitress had the chef remix it. He did by adding more garlic, and it went from mid-sauce to perfect. I hope they keep that change! The staff said the new chef is considering updates to the long-stagnant menu -- and clearly, he's listening. They do need to bring the price of everything on the mini down about $5 :-), or else have happy hour specials. The restaurant got quiet after a cruise group hopped on a boat. It was relatively empty, and it totally has to be because of the marketing. If you're thinking of a nice alternative to Skates By The Bay (also very delicious!), It's a nice detour. This spot deserves more love. We'll be back.

Can you send our server so we can get it taken off our bill? The server/ bartender never came back to check on us to see if everything came out until we were almost finished. By that time we had empty drinks for our entire meal. And we asked for refills and our check. We get the check and sure enough the Tuna Poke was on the bill. You know the one that the food runner claimed wasn't on the ticket. This place (due to the standards I have always experienced going to ANY of their locations) my family should have been taken care of and treat like guests instead of burdens or even forgotten in an empty bar seating area.

I understand staffing issues happen. However, customer service is a close second to concept. How an issue is communicated and addressed is what separates good service from bad. What's more frustrating is that these aren't customer problems to absorb. If the kitchen is understaffed, if tables aren't being cleared in a timely manner at a seat-yourself spot, those are management problems. Guests should not have to choose to leave without the food we paid for. There's a lot of competition out there, and concepts alone aren't enough to bring people back. I genuinely wanted that hot dog.
