I've had their Spicy Hog, steak with mushroom, a few Cubans, but the one that I always come back to is "The Balls" sandwich. First off, this sandwich is massive, so be sure that you come here on an empty stomach. These beef meatballs are seasoned to perfection and bursting with flavor. The balls are covered in their red sauce with provolone and Grana Padano, which gives it that nutty and salty flavor that pairs extremely well with the meatballs and baguette. All the juices and cheese just get soaked up to perfection. The baguette bread they use is supplied by La Farine, which is just a few meters away from each other. Just putting out there that La Farine is hands down one of the best bakeries in Oakland, so it makes sense that this sandwich would be so dang good. I'll be honest that I'm not a big fan of the chips or those chips in general and could be fine with just the sandwich. If you are going to have any sandwich to eat here first, I would highly recommend you try "The Balls" because I promise you will not be disappointed. I will always say that the dozen or so times I've been here, the staff are always so friendly, and the atmosphere is very down to earth. They take the order in front of the register, receive payment, and then step over to the counter to collect the items. The issue is when you (I) order a lot of stuff, they get collected behind the counter and placed into a large shopping bag so you can't see what you are getting (or not getting). They walk around behind the counter grabbing stuff and those that have paid stand in a small corner away from the purchasing line so it's difficult to see what they do (or don't) pick up. The first time I came home to find my order of half loaf (they sell the large ones by halves, if you want) missing. I brushed it off as an accident. I don't live close enough to go back before they close and I wouldn't have proof anyways. This last time I went, they didn't put in a pastry! I remembered that decision as we drove down Claremont on our way to Sweet Maria's. On our way back up, we stopped off at Souvenir Coffee for a couple of sandwiches and one coffee. The ambiance and service were top notch. Also, there's usable WiFi. I ordered a grilled cheese sandwich with bacon as an add-on, and then muttered something about a macchiato. After the person taking my order repeated back my drink as a cortado, I agreed that a cortado would be an even better choice than the macchiato that I had in my mind's eye. The cortado came out first, followed not long afterwards by our sandwiches. Both the drink and the grilled cheese sandwich were excellent; we clearly had a 5-star experience. Souvenir Coffee struck me more as a drink place with a few food items than as a lunch destination. I know the high reputation of the sandwiches at the Star Grocery next door. If Souvenir is be OK with my combining an espresso drink with a Star sandwich, I'll try that next.

The last couple days have seen the worst of the worst. Must be scraping the bottom of the Barista Barrel because the cappuccinos I've had in the last couple days have been the worst ever. They need to go back to Barista School. So please strive for a little more consistency or I will have to venture a little further afield and go back to Blue Bottle which at least is consistent.

The lines here aren't as bad as they used to be so I was able to drop in around 10 AM on a Friday morning with no wait. Today I had a sesame seed bagel toasted with plain cream cheese. It was delicious, with a nice texture and not crazy expensive at $6.25. There's not a ton of seating, but there are four stools inside and two tables out front. Overall, I can highly recommend this place. Boichik Bagels, they're consistently satisfying.
