This was a very confusing experience to find! When I came up on the door, I thought I was in the wrong place and was about to step into an insurance office or something. I nearly walked away from the door when it buzzed and I poked my head in. There's quite a variety of goods here--more Brazilian groceries and goodies than I've seen anywhere else. Ok I admit one of the reasons I like this store is because I go in there and the family that owns it starts talking me in Portuguese because they think I'm Brazilian. Yep, every time a new family member starts in the business they see me and start talking to me in Brazilian. They've even taught me some of Brazilian Portuguese which is such a beautiful language- but that's hardly the only reason I go there. they have a little tiny but well stocked grocery store that's a culinary adventure into Brazil. they also have a lot of regular customers for their Cheese Bread and some time of sausage I have yet to try but looks pretty good. Honestly I started going there because they were near one of my then children's Saturday activities and they had ice cream treats that were much more affordable than the local hipster fru fru place. but each time I went back I found something new. Like really good hibiscus tea, or the hollow chocolate easter eggs that I learned are dereguir for gift giving in Brasil. And then of course, there's the community bulletin board, mostly in Portuguese, but also advertising English such things as Brazilian festivals, local Fado concerts and Festa Junina - a very special fun Brazilian holiday that takes place around the summer solstice. It's worth hitting the button and letting them buzz you in. no the store doesn't look like much from inside, but sometimes the best presents are in little packages. Also, the same family runs a tax and insurance business, and if you need to ship stuff to Brazil cheap, they can help with that. Oh and they sell any number of Brazil themed clothing items. I came here strictly for the Guarana..a bit pricy at 12 pack for $13 but I guess it's worth it for being imported. I waited to be checked out..no person in site to run the store. I wonder if they are concerned about theft since they leave the store unattended. I also bought the frozen cheese balls..meh, came out ok. read more

This is a very interesting store. I bought some Brazilian chocolate and cookies as gifts, very strong decaf coffee, some herbal tea that I can't find in the US, and glycerin soap (kind of expensive, but very natural). I will definitely come back to get other typical products. The guy who assisted me was very helpful and friendly. He offers Brazilian coffee and cookies as courtesy service to the customers. Bossa Nova Brasil is a great little store. They've recently (maybe less than a year ago) renovated their grocery section and now have a really impressive selection of groceries including some frozen meats and the infamous pao de queijo! Here are the main reasons why this place deserves a visit from me every other week: 1. They have Guarana and Diet Guarana by the 12-packs as well as 2-litter bottles! Yay! 2. They have a ton of groceries that are not random items but the stuff Brazilian people would love to see around. Some examples are: Coarse sea salt for BBQ (ok, seems like you can get this anywhere but ask a Brazilian about the importance of this ingredient in Brazilian BBQ and they'll talk your ear off. Believe me, it's a big deal. :) ); all types of farinha and farofa, 4 or 5 different coffee brands; doce de leite in a ton of different varieties (including with ameixa. Yumm!); cake mixes; angu; jilo em conserva; Tempero Arisco; Aviacao butter and the list goes on. 3. They have an amazing selection of candies, chocolates and cookies/crackers that really transport me back to my childhood. They have a ton of the "old school" ones as well as some fun new stuff. Special mention to my favorite snack of all times, Brazilian Japanese peanuts, which BTW, are NOT found for sale on any Brazilian online stores in the US.They also have a huge candy display selling individual pieces of a lot of stuff so if you're not familiar with them, you can buy just a couple of pieces and try something new for less than a buck. 4. I probably shouldn't say this, but if I ever forget to bring someone a gift back from Brazil, this place's got me covered! :) They have Havaianas, Boticario and Natura products which are all great sources of gifts. The prices are a tad high but great to have that option. And just a tip for everyone, the Boticario items (perfumes, lipstick, makeup, soaps) and Natura (mostly soaps, lotions, and stuff for the skin) are two amazing brands using a lot of natural ingredients mostly from the Amazon. 5. Someone's already said that, but this is awesome and worth praising again: Around Easter they get a really big variety of Easter eggs and take the time to hang them up, which is a really nice touch. Again, bringing me back some fond childhood memories. I think they also sell phone cards and a few other things but I've never bough that stuff, so can't comment. One small drawback is that they don't sell any Brazilian (or other) alcohol, but then again, BevMo does have a good variety of Cachaca and is just around the corner. Staff is always very helpful and friendly and I was surprised by the other comment here saying not much English spoken. Every time I've been there I've seen at least one staff person speaking to customers in English fairly well. read more

Tiny Brazilian store/travel agency that does taxes, cashes checks and has a small selection of Brazilian cookies, juices, and other groceries. At Easter time, the entire ceiling was covered with the chocolate Easter eggs from Brazil, colorfully strung up like pinatas. Not much English here. The review is for the groceries. What makes this place stand out are the people who work here. They go above and beyond to help you, always. On top of that, they carry mostly anything you could be looking for in Brazilian groceries that you might not find in other "Brazilian" stores. It is truly a one stop shop: you can send money to Brazil, get groceries and they even have an insurance place right next door. They have convenient weekday/ weekend hours and it is always a pleasant experience coming here making the trek out to El Cerrito worth it. They have Brazilian Easter eggs, pacoquinhas (personal favorite) and they carry large Frozen pao de queijo and of course the Brazilian chocolates which I would beg for when I was younger. Bossa Nova Brasil is a great store for brazilian and American People had been to Brasil before. I always found the things I want over there. Bossa Nova Brasil had a awesome costumer service very friendly and very knowledgeable. You also can send money order to Brasil ,do insurance for your car or home, do you income tax etc. They speak enough english to serve everyone get into the store, is funny how some people judge others because they don't have much vocabulary to talk to them . When we going to a chinese store nobody speck english at all and we still buying from them no matter what ....is that right ???!! I go here to get grocery items that can only be found in Brazil. If you are not Brazilian or familiar with Brazil this store wouldn't make much sense to you. The owner is very friendly and offers a variety of other services mostly for his Brazilian clientele. read more
