    Califas Bowl with salmon
    Karen W.

My friend and I came here for a quick bite and I decided on the iced coffee which was refreshing as well as the Arugula salad with salmon! The salad was so healthy, tasty and delish! It has arugula, blue cheese, sweet potato, avocado, radish, grapes, apples and crunchy candied walnuts. The dressing is very light and I would come back here for this salad and maybe try some other things on the menu! It's a cozy place to chill and service is friendly and attentive.

Came here on my day off - pretty surprised at the tastiness of this healthy meal. Restaurant was clean and staff was kind. Coffee is quality too. Highly recommend!

Super clean, and inviting eating area. You can smell the delicious food the moment you walk in. They have a a good selection of drinks, food, healthy options, and coffee. I got the breakfast burrito with chorizo and it was AMAZING! The service was kind and friendly and they greet you with a smile. Must try!

First time visiting for lunch with a friend. The arugula salad was 10/10. The Califas green juice was pretty good, but a little hard for me to finish as admittedly I'm used to consuming less healthy and more sweet drinks. I would definitely recommend and be back to try their beets salad and vampire drink.

Really delicious Latin American fresh food at reasonable prices. I had a fantastic sweet plantain combo, and I'll definitely be back when I'm in East Bay. Definitely check it out!

Oh my, what a fantastic find! I'd just finished a run and needed something to cool me down. I headed to Yelp and guess what, Yelpers, you did not disappoint! Califas Greens was located two blocks from where I was staying, so that made it even more ideal. I was able to get a fresh juice that totally hit the spot. I felt SO refreshed and quenched! While I took my drink to go, they have a very inviting interior, so I could have stayed and enjoyed. My only wish is that they were open earlier and later (weekday hours coincided with my typical work hours.) Great find! 2022: 62/100

I come here often. They make everything with love. This is my favorite salad place in the Bay Area. But their sandwiches and breakfast options are tasty too. The service is as close to having family cook for you but in a professional way. They always play good music and it's clean and colorful.

Oh yeah, I remember La Capilla, the stylish Mexican cafe that was here before. It wasn't bad, but their pozole verde was kinda watery so I didn't come back. End of that story but alas, a new chapter begins. Now I didn't know what 'Califas' meant but read later that it's a common nickname for California among the Hispanic community. The menu didn't strike me as remotely south-of-the-border but more Californian, which presumably is where the 'Greens' part kicks in. I just happened to be strolling in the area after a long absence and was in the mood for a cup of joe after partaking a nosh of pan dulce at nearby Casa Latina. I popped in here and noticed it looked pretty much the same as it did before. I browsed the menu as I was sipping my piping hot $3.50 Americano (photo: https://bit.ly/37bIJQF). A couple of weeks later, I was walking on University and decided to come back and try their food for lunch. Even with COVID loosening its grip on us, there was just one customer in the place. That was a bit concerning since it was the lunch hour. Regardless I ordered the $18 Beets Salad Bowl with Grilled Chicken. On a bed of mixed greens were diced beets, both red and gold; pickled onions; chunks of baked sweet potato, carrots, dried cranberries, and hemp tossed in a passion fruit vinaigrette. A healthy amount of warmed chicken was placed on top (photo: https://bit.ly/3pRNIwB). The sum of flavors was quite tasty and definitely motivates me to return, especially now that I have a full appreciation of the name. FOOD - 4 stars...the salad bowl was a winner, will be trying other dishes over time AMBIANCE - 4 stars...still a nice compact spot with Mexican touches SERVICE - 4.5 stars...quite attentive TOTAL - 4 stars...the change in identity is a definite improvement RELATED - Exploring Berkeley? Nachos (with steak and guacamole) and empanadas in the back

Such nice customer service! We were told not to rush despite entering the cafe around closing time. We didn't realize until we sat down! But they didn't rush us at all. My boyfriend and I shared some nachos (fave out of the bunch), empanadas (vegetarian), and papaya agua fresca (very lightly sweet, would have preferred more flavor tbh).

This salad was so good! It had all the yummy ingredients including fruit and nuts. I would definitely try the other varieties next time I go.

On our first 20 mile drive to visit, they blocked us at the inside of the unlocked front door at 3:12pm. Street parking can be difficult but a short drive\walk distance about a block away is a $3 an hour parking garage. The place looks clean and not too busy. We sit and our waitress Yanira M was perfect. Very nice, patient and attentive. We three shared two carne asada dinners with rice and refried red beans, two coffees, a coke and three pupusas. $101.36 before tip. The menu was confusing to us. First, the use of the menu words "red refried beans" confused us as refried beans have never been red in our lifetimes and these were pretty standard brown pinto bean looking and tasting. Maybe less confusion if they were called refried red beans. Then, we thought dinners came with pupusas. No. They came with two each thick tortillas (same as half pupusas with no filling as I could tell.) I enjoyed these thick homemade tortillas. The steak was not bad but I wish it had been served with its sizzle in tact. Salsa and coleslaw came as condiments though they might have been introduced with different names by Yanira. The coleslaw was a nice touch-served in a small jar with serving tongs. The salsa was tasting a bit like the V8 vegetable juice that you had as a kid or teen if you are a boomer. This meal could have really used some homemade spice sauce to add some kick to it. The main negatives today were the high music level at the back where we sat. That, and a busser man dragging some screeching and protesting chairs across the floor - to set up for a large party I believe. Real ear busters. The best part of the meal was the piping hot pupusas and our coffee. I would go back for those.

Picante - Tender pollo asado style tacos are seasoned with achiote paste, and grilled to perfection, and tucked inside handmade corn tortillas.

The Gnocchi dish was entirely vegan made from actual plantains, but would never have known. Topped with vegan sausage, eggplant, and in a hazelnut puree/vegan sage brown butter sauce. So unique! The empanadas had a shredded chicken base and were juicy/plump. We enjoyed the jalapeño-cilantro aioli sauce to dip. And the showstopper dish, the bone-in short rib (Costilla Negra)..yes yes yes. Accompanied with a coconut-yuca puree, it was simply divine. Would go back for this dish alone. Fall-off-the-bone meat in a creamy bed of mash..what foodie dreams are made of!
