I found this place because of the high ratings and y'all were not kidding - Califa's Greens is amazing! I think that was the best huevos rancheros I've ever had in my life. (I subbed the plaintains for the potatoes and they were plump and sweet and perfectly seared.) I can't post a photo because I ate it too fast. I really wanted to like this place - a Latin take on healthy/vegetarian food? Yes, please!! I also thought the restaurant had a cute vibe when I arrived. I ordered the Cuban bowl with veggies. It looked amazing in photos, and just as good when it came to my table. However, I found it to be a let-down. First of all, I paid $20 for what felt like mostly rice and beans, which is one of the cheapest foods you can eat. And it was just...bland. The rice tasted like literally that - plain white rice. The black beans tasted like...black beans. There just wasn't any flavor. And when I eat Latin food, I expect the flavor to be flavoring! Where is the spice? The sabor? I ended up heaping on the La Victoria sauce, which ended up being the most punchy part of my plate, sadly. I even added salt to the veggies, because they didn't taste great either. I feel like I pay to eat out so other people can figure out how to make healthy food taste good, because I can cook bland veggies at home just fine. Even the fried sweet plantains, which is one of my all-time favorite foods, just didn't seem that sweet. It wasn't like the food was terrible - I would come back if someone else was paying. Califas Greens was located two blocks from where I was staying, so that made it even more ideal. I was able to get a fresh juice that totally hit the spot. I felt SO refreshed and quenched! While I took my drink to go, they have a very inviting interior, so I could have stayed and enjoyed. Oh yeah, I remember La Capilla, the stylish Mexican cafe that was here before. It wasn't bad, but their pozole verde was kinda watery so I didn't come back. End of that story but alas, a new chapter begins. Now I didn't know what 'Califas' meant but read later that it's a common nickname for California among the Hispanic community. The menu didn't strike me as remotely south-of-the-border but more Californian, which presumably is where the 'Greens' part kicks in. I just happened to be strolling in the area after a long absence and was in the mood for a cup of joe after partaking a nosh of pan dulce at nearby Casa Latina. 4-9-2021 our daughter always surprises us with delivered specialties for occasions to be celebrated. This morning I boosted up my courage and placed one for her. Researched balloons, edible bouquets and based on Yelp reviews and distance, chose this eatery. It is serviced by Grub Hub. I did need to wait due to the time difference to order at their 10 a.m. but was surprised how quickly the food was delivered. Amazing like in less than half an hour. The driver called twice ( I don't pick up calls if the number is unknown to me) then left a message as I requested once the food arrived. I'm super glad that this first experience was successful. Why is it missing a star? Cuz I saw photos of what arrived but didn't get to sample any since I'm a 5 hour flight away. I have been (and gotten delivery) 10 times or so and have mostly have gotten their bowls and salads... and I literally can't ever recall a place making truly healthy stuff taste so amazing. I don't want to stop eating it. They also have apps, sandwiches, comfort foods (mostly Mexican), a variety of juegos fresco, wine and beer, coffee, pastries, and more. The service is great and friendly. I have been able to find seating every time I've gone (on weekdays) which shocks me. No WiFi. Cute little cafe spot decorated cheerfully. Right now I am pregnant and needed iron and protein and veg (despite wanting junk) so I got a spinach salad with chicken. It comes with red cabbage, avocado, quinoa, cheese, peanuts, tomato and some kind of light but delicious dressing. It is just giving me new life!! I'm sad to report my meal was incredibly bland and unsatisfying, and pricey to top it off. I ordered a Califas Bowl with roasted pork ($18): basmati rice, sauteed kale, mushrooms, broccoli & quinoa, guacamole, goat cheese, topped with pumpkin seed cilantro lime sauce. Pork: bland, They said it was marinated and roasted for hours, but absolutely bland, no flavor Sauteed veggies: also bland, no flavor Sauce: unremarkable. I forgot to ask if they had brown rice to sub, but received white rice. So, also flavorless, and poor nutritional value, negating the healthiness of the meal. Blech. Might as well have been eating a bowl of unseasoned tofu. And I was really hungry. Hours later, still feel blech and unsatisfied. The good: very nice staff, and the Mexican Hot Chocolate was yummy (I chose the oat milk option). There might be some good items on the menu, but based on my experience, I'm not going to spend more to try to find out. read more
